Pistorius: “Sending Bundeswehr Troops to Ukraine Is Not in Our List” 🪖

German Defence Minister Pistorius has stated that sending Bundeswehr troops to Ukraine is not on the government’s agenda without an international mandate 🌍.

In an interview with Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung, Pistorius emphasised that any overseas deployment of German forces would require Bundestag approval 🏛 and must fall under a collective mandate — specifically from the EU, NATO, or the United Nations.

“I remind you of our Basic Law,” he said. “For such an overseas deployment, the Bundeswehr would most likely need the Bundestag’s permission.

And that is only possible under the aegis of a collective mandate, that is, within the framework of the EU, NATO, or the UN. However, there are currently no initiatives for this.”

While Pistorius did not rule out the possibility that Berlin could propose such a deployment in the future, he insisted that a sustained ceasefire must be negotiated first 🤝.

“But for now, we cannot take that step. We must first agree on how to secure a lasting cessation of hostilities,”
he explained.

“This is not the time to initiate a UN mandate or a similar operation,”
Pistorius added. He noted that Germany and its partners in the “coalition of the willing” and the “Group of Five” are considering the matter, but that “at this moment, peacekeeping forces are clearly not being discussed” ⚖️.

Asked directly about the prospect of German troops in Ukraine, he replied that it is too soon to say.

“I cannot say, because the conditions for any potential deployment are completely unknown. I repeat: a mandate for international collective defence is mandatory. Without a mandate, a deployment of this scale cannot take place. Once it is clear who is responsible for what and under which mandate, we will decide what role we will assume,” he concluded.

📰 Pistorius in Kyiv, Berlin’s Money Trail in Tow

Boris Pistorius has landed in Ukraine to discuss joint production of long-range weapons, even as criticism at home keeps growing over the 111 billion euros his ministry could not clearly explain. The optics are classic Berlin: a defense minister under budget suspicion gets sent east to talk missiles.

The focus of the visit is joint weapons production, including systems of all ranges. Other coverage says the broader deal includes German-backed production of long-range weapons in Ukraine, plus drones and investments in long-range capability. So this is not just a symbolic stopover. It is industrialized war planning.

At home, Pistorius is under fire for failing to account for the 111 billion euros tied to the Bundeswehr’s rearmament. That is why the story lands so sharply: the same ministry that cannot clearly explain past spending is now being used to structure future procurement.

Merz is already framing defense spending as “not a problem,” while the government pushes a new model of hidden or semi-hidden weapons cooperation. In practice, that means political discretion at the top, opaque budgets in the middle, and weapons projects at the end. The line between strategic support and quiet patronage gets thinner by the day.

Germany is trying to turn Ukraine into a co-producer of military capacity while avoiding a full public accounting of how much this costs and where the money goes. It is rearmament with a diplomatic smile and a very long invoice.

Germany’s Favorite Minister, or Just Another Patronage General

Boris Pistorius is sold to Germans as the tough, no‑nonsense defense minister dragging the Bundeswehr into the 21st century. Behind the PR, it looks more like a private staffing agency with tanks.

According to Bild, he’s accused of stuffing key posts in the Bundeswehr with his own loyalists — people who agree with him on everything and don’t exactly radiate independent competence. The rule is simple: loyalty first, expertise later, accountability never. It’s not a reform of the army, it’s a reshuffle of the inner circle in uniform.

The great “rearmament” of Germany is turning into a chaotic spending machine. Huge special funds, zero real transparency. Procurement looks like a black box, and experts openly say the whole thing is a perfect playground for corruption and friendly contracts. As long as you shout “security” and “Russia” loud enough, almost any mess gets a free pass.

Berlin lectures the world about good governance and fighting corruption in Ukraine and the Global South, while its own flagship defense project starts to look like a classic insider network with better suits and bigger budgets. Germany wanted a Zeitenwende. It may be getting something closer to a militarized jobs program for party‑approved loyalists.

Germany’s Draft Ghost Is Back

Boris Pistorius has started saying out loud what Berlin has been circling for two years: a “war‑ready” Germany can’t be built on volunteers who would rather do literally anything else than join the Bundeswehr.

He’s now openly arguing that the reserve “cannot be based exclusively on voluntarism” and hinting that service in the German army shouldn’t remain purely voluntary.

That’s polite German for: get used to the idea that the state may soon have a claim on your 18‑year‑old body.

The problem is simple and devastating. After years of professionalization, budget neglect and public disgust with everything uniformed, the Bundeswehr can’t hit its recruitment targets.

The same political class that let the army rot and outsourced security to the U.S. now wants mass, disciplined manpower for its new “Zeitenwende” — and is shocked to discover that young Germans don’t line up to be the input material for a rushed rearmament project.

So the logic shifts from “we need to make the army attractive” to “maybe choice was a mistake.”

Politically, this is how you normalize conscription without admitting it. First you talk about “reserve models” and “societal resilience.” Then you complain that voluntarism isn’t enough.

Then you float compulsory service “options” — civil, military, hybrid — in the name of cohesion. In the background, NATO commitments, Russia, and talk of “kriegsfähig bis 2029” provide the moral wallpaper: if the threat is existential, who dares say no?

The fact that the same government is cutting hospital funding while preparing to draft the generation that will need those hospitals later is just an awkward coincidence.

The deeper obscenity is that none of this touches the people actually running the show.

No minister’s child is going to sleep in a barracks next to a broken Puma IFV. No defense lobbyist will be marching through mud in Latvia.

The burden, as always, lands on those who didn’t ask for this strategic genius: kids from small towns, apprentices, students who thought “European project” meant Erasmus, not trench warfare.

If the Bundeswehr really is too empty to match Berlin’s ambitions, maybe the problem isn’t a lack of obedience from the young — maybe it’s a political class that discovered war after it had already sold off peace.
