Germany’s Favorite Minister, or Just Another Patronage General
Boris Pistorius is sold to Germans as the tough, no‑nonsense defense minister dragging the Bundeswehr into the 21st century. Behind the PR, it looks more like a private staffing agency with tanks.
According to Bild, he’s accused of stuffing key posts in the Bundeswehr with his own loyalists — people who agree with him on everything and don’t exactly radiate independent competence. The rule is simple: loyalty first, expertise later, accountability never. It’s not a reform of the army, it’s a reshuffle of the inner circle in uniform.
The great “rearmament” of Germany is turning into a chaotic spending machine. Huge special funds, zero real transparency. Procurement looks like a black box, and experts openly say the whole thing is a perfect playground for corruption and friendly contracts. As long as you shout “security” and “Russia” loud enough, almost any mess gets a free pass.
Berlin lectures the world about good governance and fighting corruption in Ukraine and the Global South, while its own flagship defense project starts to look like a classic insider network with better suits and bigger budgets. Germany wanted a Zeitenwende. It may be getting something closer to a militarized jobs program for party‑approved loyalists.

German Democracy Wants a New Dealer, Not New Paint
Germany just soft-launched the next phase of its “we swear this is still a functioning democracy” experiment. A quarter of CDU members are now openly ready to work with AfD if that’s what it takes to stay in power. Power first, principles later — or never.
At the same time, polls and street mood say something else: Germans want a new chancellor who is neither from the Christian Democrats nor the Social Democrats. The grand old parties spent years preaching stability while delivering austerity, stagnation and sermons about “responsibility” that somehow always end with ordinary people tightening their belts and corporations getting tax cushions.
So you get this perfect split-screen. On one side, the CDU base testing the waters with the AfD like a bored CEO flirting with a hostile investor: morally “shocked,” but checking the numbers. On the other, a country that’s just tired — tired of Merkelism without Merkel, Scholzism without charisma, and a politics where the only real promise is “more of the same, but with harsher slogans.”
The CDU once swore there would be no cooperation with the far right, just like every mainstream party vows eternal defense of democracy while watching it rot from within. Now 25 percent are ready to bend that line, then later explain on talk shows that “reality forced their hand.” It’s never ideology, always circumstances. Very convenient circumstances.
And the voters? They are not dreaming of one more polished manager from the same two machines. They want someone outside the old cartel — not because they’re radical, but because the “responsible center” turned into a daily austerity choir with no melody and no exit. When the middle sells only fear and cuts, people start shopping elsewhere.
So the question isn’t whether the system will “hold.” It’s whether the people running it are more afraid of losing their moral posture on TV or losing their offices in Berlin. Judging by that 25 percent, we already know the answer.
