π Safety of Indiaβs Critical National Infrastructure (CNI)
π Why in Focus?
β Rapid digitisation through IoT, AI and Operational Technology (OT) has increased vulnerabilities in Indiaβs critical infrastructure, raising concerns over cyber warfare, remote disruptions and national security.
π What is Critical National Infrastructure (CNI)?
β CNI includes essential physical and digital systems whose disruption can severely affect national security, economy, public safety and governance.
β It covers sectors like power grids, transport networks, telecom, BFSI, healthcare, water supply and defence communication systems.
π Key Highlights:
β Indiaβs infrastructure is increasingly dependent on interconnected IT-OT-IoT ecosystems, expanding the attack surface for cyber threats.
β Key sectors under risk include PowerGrid transmission systems, RBI payment networks, airport ATC systems, telecom networks and oil-gas pipelines.
β Around one-third of industrial IoT systems remain vulnerable to legacy credential attacks, while cyberattacks on critical sectors have surged globally.
β India has created institutions like NCIIPC under Section 70A of the IT Act and strengthened CERT-In and Trusted Telecom Portal initiatives.
β Technologies such as AI-driven anomaly detection, Zero-Trust Architecture and advanced STQC verification systems are being promoted for infrastructure protection.
π Challenges / Issues / Implications:
β Convergence of IT, OT and IoT networks makes industrial control systems vulnerable to remote cyber manipulation.
β Dependence on imported or poorly verified hardware raises risks of hidden malware, trojans and foreign surveillance.
β Slow certification and procurement systems delay deployment of secure indigenous technologies.
β State-sponsored cyber warfare and ransomware attacks threaten strategic assets like energy grids, banking systems and transport networks.
β Mains Question:
Explain the concept of Critical Information Infrastructure (CII) and its importance in ensuring national security. Highlight the major threats posed to Indiaβs critical infrastructure in the era of IoT and AI-driven automation. (150 Words)

πSelf-respect marriages
β The Supreme Court observed that there is no blanket ban on advocates solemnising βself-respectβ marriages under Section 7(A) of the Hindu Marriage Act, 1955.
β In 1968, the Hindu Marriage (Tamil Nadu Amendment) Act, 1967, received the Presidentβs approval and became the law.
β This amendment modified the Hindu Marriage Act of 1955, by inserting Section 7-A into it.
β However, it extended only to the state of Tamil Nadu.
β Section 7-A deals with the special provision on βself-respect and secular marriagesβ.
β It legally recognises any marriage between any two Hindus, which can be referred to as βsuyamariyathaiβ or βseerthiruththa marriageβ or by any other name.
β Such marriages are solemnised in the presence of relatives, friends, or other persons, with parties declaring each other to be husband or wife, in a language understood by them.
β Such marriages are also required to be registered as per the law.
βͺοΈAim:
β To radically simplify weddings by shunning the need for mandatory Brahmin priests, holy fire and saptapadi (seven steps).
β This allowed marriages to be declared in the presence of the coupleβs friends or family or any other persons.
β The amendment was made to do away with the need for priests and rituals, which were otherwise required to complete wedding ceremonies.
