๐ Indiaโs Vulnerability
โ 12.6% of Indiaโs land is landslide-prone (ISRO Landslide Atlas 2023).

๐ GREEN PARADOX โ Urban Heat & Tree Plantation
๐ Whatโs the issue?
โ Cities are heating up due to climate change + urban heat islands
โ Tree plantation is promoted as a nature-based cooling solution โ but results vary
๐ Key finding (Global study | Science Advances)
โ Introduces Temperature Regulation Capability (TRC)
โก๏ธ TRC = Vegetated area temperature โ Built-up area temperature
โก๏ธ Negative TRC = cooling, Positive TRC = warming
๐ What did the study find?
โ Vegetation cooled cities in most cases
โ Dry / arid cities showed warming instead of cooling
โ Grasslands cooled built-up areas in 78% cities
โ Trees cooled in 98% cities, but ~25% dry cities saw warming
โ ๏ธ In arid zones, low water โ weak evapotranspiration โ reduced cooling
๐ Why the paradox?
โ Vegetation cools via evapotranspiration
โ In water-scarce cities, this process weakens
โ Vegetation may absorb more sunlight than concrete
โ Extreme heat reduces plant water loss โ less cooling
๐ Core takeaway
โ ๏ธ Planting trees is not a universal solution
โ ๏ธ Misguided greening can worsen urban warming
โ Urban planning must be climate- and water-context specific
๐ Mains Question
๐ โUrban greening is often projected as a solution to rising city temperatures, yet recent studies highlight a โgreen paradoxโ.โ Examine the statement with suitable examples.

๐ Cryo-Hydrological Hazard linked to Deglaciation in Himalayas
๐ Context
โ A study by ISRO scientists found that the 2025 Dharali (Uttarakhand) flash flood was caused by collapse of an exposed ice patch, not by a cloudburst or Glacial Lake Outburst Flood (GLOF).
โ The ice patch was located in the nivation zone of Srikanta Glacier.
๐ Key Concept: Nivation
โ Nivation โ Progressive erosion beneath and around a snowbank due to alternate freeze-thaw cycles.
โ Leads to weakening of underlying ice and slope destabilisation.
๐ Why Himalayan Disasters are Increasing
โ Climate Change Impacts
โข Accelerated glacier thinning & retreat
โข Rising temperatures reduce protective seasonal snow cover
โข Altered precipitation patterns increase instability
โ Thermal & Mechanical Destabilisation
โข Exposed ice responds quickly to temperature variations & minor disturbances
โข Causes rapid melting, fragmentation & gravitational collapse
๐ Effects of Deglaciation
โ Cascading Cryo-Hydrological Hazards
โข Sudden release of ice fragments + meltwater + debris
โข Generates short-duration, high-velocity flash floods
โ Topographic Amplification
โข Steep Himalayan valleys convert small ice collapse into high-energy debris flows
โข Leads to channel erosion & widening
โ Socio-Economic Impacts
โข Destruction of settlements, religious routes & infrastructure
โข Threat to hydropower projects & downstream communities
๐ Important Term: Ice Patch
โ A perennial mass of surface snow, firn and basal ice
โ Unlike glaciers โ No internal deformation or active flow
โ Exposed ice patches in satellite imagery act as early warning signals for flash-flood risk.
๐ Way Forward
โ Strengthen satellite-based glacier monitoring & hazard mapping
โ Integrate early warning systems + climate adaptation planning
โ Regulate infrastructure development in fragile Himalayan zones

๐Self-respect marriages
โ The Supreme Court observed that there is no blanket ban on advocates solemnising โself-respectโ marriages under Section 7(A) of the Hindu Marriage Act, 1955.
โ In 1968, the Hindu Marriage (Tamil Nadu Amendment) Act, 1967, received the Presidentโs approval and became the law.
โ This amendment modified the Hindu Marriage Act of 1955, by inserting Section 7-A into it.
โ However, it extended only to the state of Tamil Nadu.
โ Section 7-A deals with the special provision on โself-respect and secular marriagesโ.
โ It legally recognises any marriage between any two Hindus, which can be referred to as โsuyamariyathaiโ or โseerthiruththa marriageโ or by any other name.
โ Such marriages are solemnised in the presence of relatives, friends, or other persons, with parties declaring each other to be husband or wife, in a language understood by them.
โ Such marriages are also required to be registered as per the law.
โช๏ธAim:
โ To radically simplify weddings by shunning the need for mandatory Brahmin priests, holy fire and saptapadi (seven steps).
โ This allowed marriages to be declared in the presence of the coupleโs friends or family or any other persons.
โ The amendment was made to do away with the need for priests and rituals, which were otherwise required to complete wedding ceremonies.
