Bayern Munich opt for very little rotation against Mainz
MediaThis is a bit of a head-scratcher. Carlo Ancelotti has named his lineup for Bayern Munich’s home match against Mainz in the Bundesliga. While we’ve discussed this week about the likelihood of Ancelotti going for a big rotation against Mainz in order to prep for a bigger match midweek, it appears as though Ancelotti has decided that his wasn’t the course of action to take.STARTING XI and SUBS vs. @Mainz05en!#FCBM05 http://pic.twitter.com/ht6739knLk— FC Bayern US (@FCBayernUS) April 22, 2017David Alaba has to shift to centerback due to injuries to Jerome Boateng and Javi Martinez, meaning that Juan Bernat is in at left back. Rafinha is in at right back for Philipp Lahm.Otherwise, there’s no rotation. Ancelotti is intent to run out both Franck Ribery and Arjen Robben again. With Tuesday’s huge match against Borussia Dortmund looming, this is an odd decision at-best.The lineup is a rather simple 4-2-3-1 to start but will ebb toward a far more attacking formation when in possession. MediaThe lineup is questionable due to the lack of rotation, but Bayern will hopefully get a few early goals and sub Ribery and Robben out of the match before the hour mark.Mainz has also revealed their lineup.Today's #Mainz05 line-up in Munich. Bundesliga side sign Galatasaray star
Mainz have completed a move for Nigel de Jong after the 81-time Netherlands midfielder opted to call time on his stay at Galatasaray. The 33-year-old was released from his deal with the Turkish club by mutual consent on Friday, with his switch to the Bundesliga confirmed soon after.Mainz sit 15th in the table and two points clear of the bottom three at the halfway point of the season but De Jong, formerly of Ajax, Manchester City and AC Milan, is relishing a new challenge after signing until the end of the campaign.“I like Mainz’s story, the club has established itself in the Bundesliga off its own back,” De Jong, who had a spell in Germany with Hamburg, told the club’s official website.“I want to help the team and the club achieve its aims this season. Jonathan Meier leaves Bayern Munich for Mainz
Media The U-19 player makes the move to the Bundesliga side. Bayern Munich and Mainz have announced the completed transfer of Jonathan Meier. The Bayern U-19 defender will join Mainz on a three year deal that will keep him with the club through 2022. Bild reports that the fee is for €1.2 million.Meier featured 19 times for Bayern Munich II in their promotion journey, but he spent the majority of the season with the U-19 team. He also played three matches in the UEFA Youth League this past season.“Jonathan Meier was able to receive exceptional training during his time in the youth academies at both 1860 Munich and Bayern,” Mainz sporting director Rouven Schroder said. “He is a fast and dynamic player; the epitome of the modern left-back.”Hopefully, Meier manages to break into the Mainz first team sooner rather than later. If he spends time with the Mainz reserves, he’ll be down playing in the Regionalliga Sudwest. Would that be a better move than playing with Bayern’s reserves in the 3.Liga next season?Who knows what the future holds for Meier; however, we here at Bavarian Football Works would like to wish him all the luck in the world (except against Bayern) moving forward. #Mainz05 hat Jonathan Meier aus dem Nachwuchsleistungszentrum des @FCBayern verpflichtet. In an interview with Bild, Salihamidzic discussed his erstwhile critics and image.Asked whether he felt vindicated after his third championship in his three years as sporting director, Salihamidzic said, “I don’t concern myself with what others believe they can judge. I work for Bayern Munich. I have a plan. We have success. We are building something. There’s nothing better.”Salihamidzic said he never doubted on the Bundesliga championship, even in early November when coach Niko Kovac resigned. “Of course (I believed). I know how much quality our team has. The boys showed a really good mentality and came back. I telephoned with Niko by the way: he was very happy about the championship.”To those who claim Bayern Munich wins the league only because of weak competition, Salihamidzic insists on the work that the club and players put into their profession:“It may seem easy from the outside,” Salihamidzic said, “but it is work and sacrifice every day. Trying every day to improve and reach the limits of your capabilities. The boys accomplish great things day by day. That is a strength, and that’s why won the championship.”Salihamidzic also fielded a question about a mocking song the Bayern players sang on their bus after clinching the league — “Only BVB will be German champion!” Salihamidzic said, “We treat everyone with due respect.
