Medicals galore: Bouna Sarr arrives in Germany for Bayern Munich tests
Olympique de Marseille v RC Strasbourg - Ligue 1 Photo by Guillaume Ruoppolo - OM/Olympique de Marseille via Getty ImagesOlympique Marseille defender Bouna Sarr is in Germany to take his medical exam for Bayern Munich. It looks like Bayern Munich’s deal for Olympique Marseille right-back Bouna Sarr is getting close to completion. The 28-year-old arrived in Munich to undergo his medical exam and was greeted at the airport by Tz journalist Jonas Austermann.Sarr is expected to have a back-up role with the Bavarians behind starter Benjamin Pavard. At 28-years-old, Sarr is expected to provide a veteran presence and stability to Hansi Flick’s bench.Bouna #Sarr ist da! Der neue Rechtsverteidiger des #FCBayern ist soeben in München gelandet. Die @tzmuenchen begrüßte ihn am Flughafen.@BounaSarr_10 @FCBayern @OM_Officiel pic.twitter.com/AOg0NojWWn— Jonas Austermann (@JonasBA90) October 5, 2020Bouna #Sarr is there! The new right-back of the #FCBayern has just landed in Munich. The @tzmuenchen greeted him at the airport.BFW AnalysisAs covered last night, the downside of this move could be what happens with Chris Richards. Richards, who excelled against Hertha Berlin yesterday, has immense potential and at least looks to be ready for a reserve role with first-team.What will Sarr’s arrival in Munich mean for Richards? We should soon find out, but off all of Bayern Munich’s moves this offseason, bringing in Sarr feels the most unnecessary given the presence of Pavard, Richards, and Joshua Kimmich, who was only considered one of the top right-backs in the world when he manned the position on a full-time basis. With Marc Roca also now wearing Bayern red, Flick has the flexibility within his midfield to allow Kimmich to drop to right-back on a whim if needed.Read more...
FC Bayern Muenchen v 1. FSV Mainz 05 - BundesligaPhoto by Guenter Schiffmann - Pool/Getty ImagesAs of now, Bayern Munich manager Hansi Flick is content with his defenders. There has been a bit of an uproar of late over Bayern Munich’s right-back situation. With Benjamin Pavard unable to convince Hansi Flick of his quality lately, many are speculating that the treble-winning manager could be pushing his front office for a move.According to Sport1 journalist Florian Plettenberg, Flick is content with his defenders...at least for now:Update #Transfers: No, #Flick doesn’t force the transfer of another right-back this winter. The club wants to support #Pavard (loss of form). Moreover he has got a positive opinion about #Sarr. Other options: Kimmich, Süle, Richards. @SPORT1 #FCBayern— Florian Plettenberg (@Plettigoal) January 7, 2021After being subbed off early against Mainz 05, Pavard has fallen under the microscope of fans and pundits alike, but as Plettenberg states, Bayern Munich is willing to give him the time and support to work out of his current funk.Even if Pavard cannot recapture his form, Flick is reportedly comfortable with Bouna Sarr, Joshua Kimmich, Niklas Süle, and Chris Richards as alternatives on the right defensive flank. There was a fair amount of speculation yesterday that Flick was going to push for Bayern Munich’s front office to make a move for a defender, but that no longer appears to be the case.

FC Bayern Muenchen v Tigres UANL - FIFA Club World Cup Qatar 2020Photo by M. Donato/Getty Images for FC BayernThe Frenchman wants to give Bayern Munich another chance.Bayern Munich right-back Bouna Sarr has been linked with a move away from the Bavarian club, but it appears that the 29-year-old wants to stay and try to earn his place under Julian Nagelsmann. There has been rampant speculation that Sarr would seek to move on given his lack of field time over the course of this season, but it looks as if Sarr will attempt prove his mettle next season in Germany per Tz’s Philipp Kessler:An den Gerüchten aus Frankreich über eine mögliche Rückkehr von Bouna #Sarr zu #OlympiqueMarseille ist nichts dran. Der Franzose möchte um seinen Platz beim #FCBayern kämpfen und hofft auf einen Neuanfang unter #Nagelsmann. #FCBTransfersommer @mano_bonke— Philipp Kessler (@kessler_philipp) May 4, 2021There is nothing to the rumors from France about a possible return of Bouna #Sarr to #OlympiqueMarseille. The Frenchman wants to fight for his place at #FCBayern and hopes for a fresh start under #Nagelsmann .#FCBTransfersommer @mano_bonkeThe surprising part of the story is that Sarr allegedly has the chance to go back to Olympique Marseille, but will spurn that offer — at least for now.A key aspect of Sarr’s situation is what formation Nagelsmann will opt to run. Should Nagelsmann’s set-up include wing-backs, Sarr’s value could potentially be enhanced — if he can find his form. That is a big “if”, however, as Sarr was not impressive during his time on the field this season with Bayern Munich.

Bremer SV v FC Bayern Muenchen - DFB Cup - First RoundPhoto by Mario Hommes/DeFodi Images via Getty ImagesAccording to Tz journalist Philipp Kessler, there were three clubs pursuing Bayern Munich deep reserve Bouna Sarr during the summer transfer window.Per Kessler, Besiktas, Lille, and Olympiacos FC were all interested in bringing in Sarr, but the Frenchman wanted to stay with Bayern Munich to “fight” for his spot. Previous reports indicated that Sarr did not want to take a pay cut, which led to him staying in Bavaria:#Sarr hatte Anfragen von @Besiktas, @losclive und @olympiacosfc. Der Rechtsverteidiger machte aber schnell deutlich, dass er den #FCBayern nicht verlassen möchte. Er will weiterhin um seinen Platz in München kämpfen. #FCBTransfersommer @mano_bonke— Philipp Kessler (@kessler_philipp) September 1, 2021#Sarr had inquiries from @Besiktas, @losclive and @olympiacosfc. The right-back quickly made it clear that he was the #FCBayern don’t want to leave. He wants to keep fighting for his place in Munich.#FCBTransfersommer @mano_bonkeHow much fighting Sarr does remains to be seen. The 29-year-old is likely the fifth-choice selection at right-back these days behind Benjamin Pavard, Josip Stanisic, Niklas Süle, and Joshua Kimmich.Besiktas, Lille, and Olympiacos could have all offered Sarr more playing time, but it is likely that none of them were willing to take on Sarr’s full salary.

Bremer SV v FC Bayern Muenchen - DFB Cup - First RoundPhoto by Mario Hommes/DeFodi Images via Getty ImagesDespite the latest insult from Lothar Matthäus, Bouna Sarr is focused on proving himself at Bayern Munich. In his weekly column for Sky, Lothar Matthäus wrote that Bayern Munich right back Bouna Sarr was “simply not a Bayern player.” The statement came about as Matthäus was criticizing Julian Nagelsmann for bringing in Marcel Sabitzer late against Eintracht Frankfurt and then deploying him at right-back.Sarr is a recipient of frequent criticism from fans and pundits alike, so this isn’t anything new for the defender. When Sarr was asked for a retort by Sport1’s Florian Plettenberg — the response was, well, no response at all:Update Bouna #Sarr: He doesn't want to react on the criticism of Matthäus. No comment, no interview. He is totally focussed on his performances. He still wants to show his qualities in the club. His future depends on interesting offers for both sides. @SPORT1 #FCBayern— Florian Plettenberg (@Plettigoal) October 5, 2021While criticizing Sarr is an easy thing for fans and pundits to do, it must be said that you never hear complaints through the media from the club, coaching staff, or teammates about Sarr’s attitude or commitment to Bayern. He’s a team player, even if he’s not playing much for the team.Sarr was called into Senegal’s national team for their upcoming CAF World Cup Qualifiers. They will face Namibia in both games. Senegal currently lead Group H with six points over Namibia (4), Congo (1), and Togo (0).

FC Bayern München v Borussia Mönchengladbach - BundesligaPhoto by Roland Krivec/DeFodi Images via Getty ImagesWill Bayern Munich find a trade partner for Bouna Sarr?If there is one player on the Bayern Munich roster completely buried, it is right-back Bouna Sarr.Sarr, who coach Julian Nagelsmann recently said he sees more as a right-wing than a right-back, has little hope of jumping over Benjamin Pavard, Josip Stanišić, and Noussair Mazraoui as an option at right-back. Moreover, trying to squeeze in time as wing in Nagelsmann’s 4-2-2-2 system would require Sarr to jump over the likes of Thomas Müller, Jamal Musiala, Sadio Mané, Leroy Sané, Kingsley Coman, and Serge Gnabry.None of that is likely to happen, so there might be some last minute discussions on a potential move for Sarr, but it could be a longshot. Sky’s Florian Plettenberg reported that there were no offers on the table:News #Sarr: He is likely to stay at #FCBayern at this stage. No offers. @SkySportDE— Florian Plettenberg (@Plettigoal) September 1, 2022Meanwhile, Sport1’s Kerry Hau said there is late interest from clubs in both Turkey and France, but no concrete proposals on the table have been submitted to Bayern Munich:There are clubs from Italy, Turkey and France that would be interested in Bouna Sarr in principle, but Bayern still has no concrete offer on the table. A move on today's deadline day is rather unlikely [@kerry_hau, @Carsten_Arndt] pic.twitter.com/vMqu6JSAN6— Bayern & Germany (@iMiaSanMia) September 1, 2022Could these be Sarr’s final hours in Bavarian? Stay tuned.
