Note the pilot/weapons officer uploading targeting information from a laptop into the pylon and/or JDAM externally meaning it has one target and one target only. This is an artifact of the weapon being used on a Soviet-era aircraft which does not have the integrated electronics for real-time weapons management and targeting systems (AN/AAQ-28 Litening for example) that are in aircraft that were designed to deploy the JDAM (F-16 for example).
Opinion: The following will be my only comment on the loss of the Ukrainian F-16 and pilot this week (the latter being the greatest loss of all).
Friendly fire is a risk of war that, just based on statistics and probability alone, is unavoidable. But that does not mean the likelihood of these tragedies cannot be mitigated. Because of this, the prevention of friendly fire incidents should be one of the highest-priority and permanently active risk management programs within any military organization. This allows for a structured, honest and objective approach to post-incident investigations and the timely dissemination of accurate (honest) information on these tragedies to political leaders, the press and the public. The political leaders, on their part, have to support their military in these efforts and be prepared to respond to friendly fire incidents in the same manner.
Having said that, The AFU and Ukraine's political leadership continue to demonstrate they have some work to do on shedding their post-Soviet/Russian autocratic instincts to hide or provide misleading information about the conduct of the war except when necessary to maintain OPSEC and/or protect classified information.
