Lady from the lineage of Arab heroes
History testifies that the fathers and uncles of Lady Umm al-Banin were heroes of the Arabs before Islam. It is narrated that during battles, they displayed numerous acts of valor, combining great courage with leadership qualities that made them formidable leaders among their people. So much so that the rulers of their time would surrender in front of them. These were the individuals whom Aqeel, a renowned Arab genealogist and the brother of Ali (AS), described to Imam Ali (AS), saying, "Among the Arabs, one cannot find braver and more heroic ancestors."
The selection of Umm al-Banin (AS) as a wife for Ali (AS)
After the martyrdom of Fatimah Zahra (AS), Ali ibn Abi Talib (AS) summoned his brother Aqeel, who was well-versed in Arab genealogy, and asked him to choose a wife from the lineage of heroes who would bear a brave son for the Master.
Aqeel selected Fatimah Kilabiyyah for the Imam, as her tribe and lineage, Banu Kilab, were known for unparalleled bravery. Imam Ali (AS) approved of this choice.
Seeking the hand of Umm al-Banin (AS)
After Aqeel examined the family trees of the Arabs and chose Umm al-Banin, Imam Ali (AS) sent him to propose on his behalf. Umm al-Banin's father, pleased with this blessed union, hurried to his daughter, and the matter was discussed. Umm al-Banin, with pride and honor, gave a positive response, and a lasting bond was established between her and the Master of the Pious.
Imam Ali (AS) observed in his spouse a strong faith, noble manners, and good qualities. He respected her deeply and wholeheartedly endeavored to preserve her dignity.
Name change
After some time of shared life with Ali (AS), Fatimah Kilabiyyah suggested to the Commander of the Faithful that instead of "Fatimah," her original and given name, she be called Umm al-Banin. This way, the children of Fatimah Zahra (AS) would not be reminded of their mother when their father mentioned her name, sparing them the pain of her absence and the hardship of motherlessness.
Unconditional love of Umm al-Banin (AS) for the children of Zahra (AS)
Umm al-Banin was determined to fill the void left by Lady Fatimah Zahra (AS) in the lives of her children, becoming a mother who, despite reaching the pinnacle of maturity, sacrificed herself for the young souls. The children of Fatimah Zahra (AS) saw their beloved mother in this virtuous lady, alleviating the pain of maternal loss.
Umm al-Banin (AS) prioritized the noble offspring of the Prophet Muhammad (SAW) over her own children, considering it a religious duty. Indeed, Allah Almighty, in His Book, commands everyone to love them.

π€ After the tragic events of Ashura, the captives were taken to Kufa, where they were paraded in a heart-wrenching manner. Upon entering Kufa, Hazrat Zainab (SA), in the presence of Yazid, delivered a powerful sermon that left everyone in awe and deeply moved. (Tabarsi, Al-Ihtijaj, Vol.2, p.113)
This oration is considered one of the most important and impactful speeches in defense of the righteousness of Imam Hussain (AS).
Hazeem bin Shareek Al-Asadi remarked about Hazrat Zainab's (SA) sermon:
π£οΈ "By God! I have not seen anyone as eloquent in speech as Zainab, as if she speaks from the tongue of Amir al-Mu'minin Ali (AS). She thundered upon the people, 'Be silent!' With this command, not only did the multitude fall silent, but even the bells of the camels ceased to make a sound!" (Tabarsi, Al-Ihtijaj, Vol.2, p.109-110)
Hazrat Zainab's (SA) Sermon:
She commenced her speech with praise for Allah and salutations upon the Prophet (PBUH), citing a verse from the Quran about evildoers. She then, with reference to a divine tradition about giving respite to oppressors, rebuked Yazid for the injustice against the household of Imam Hussain (AS) and their humiliation in various cities. She attributed Yazid's heinous actions to his animosity stemming from the Battle of Badr.
Continuing, she reminded Yazid of his ultimate fate, cursed the murderers and oppressors of the tragedy of Karbala, and concluded by highlighting the futile attempts of Yazid to erase the memory of the Prophet's family. (Sayyid ibn Tawus, Al-Luhuf 'ala Qatli at-Tufuf, p.214-220)
Consequences of Zainab's (SA) Speech:
β’ Praise for the Lord and blessings upon the Prophet of Islam (PBUH)
β’ Condemnation of the disgraceful acts of Yazid and his followers
β’ Reference to the divine tradition of giving respite to disbelievers
β’ Cursing Yazidi forces and alluding to the fate of oppressors
β’ Documentation of the history of Ashura
β’ Eternal legacy of the Ahl al-Bayt
β’ Conveyance of the message of the martyrs of Karbala
