UK dinosaur fossil identified as new long-clawed predator | Natural History Museum Read Full Article #DinosaurDiscovery #Paleontology #NaturalHistoryMuseum
🦖 A new dinosaur species, Invictibellatrix amberina, has been identified from a fossil collected on the Isle of Wight. This agile, two-legged carnivore, the size of a large tiger, is the first of its kind (megaraptoran) discovered in Europe, dating back to about 120 million years ago during the Early Cretaceous period.

🦴 The Invictibellatrix fossil, a piece of a skull, was acquired by the Natural History Museum in 1924 but remained unstudied until now. Researchers estimate it was three to four meters long, about 1.5 meters tall, and potentially feathered, with claws measuring 10-20cm. It preyed on smaller animals and would have been a significant threat to humans.

🌍 This discovery provides the first evidence that megaraptorans were present in Europe, supporting theories that they migrated from Asia and then spread to the southern landmass of Gondwana, rather than island-hopping.

🔬 The identification involved CT scanning the fossil to create a 3D model of the skull and braincase, comparing its unique features to those of other theropod dinosaurs.

🔬 New research suggests ovaries undergo a "career change" after menopause, not complete retirement, showing significant protein shifts with age.

🥚 A study of 28 postmenopausal women's ovaries, aged 50-70+, revealed distinct protein profiles linked to age-related functions like RNA/DNA regulation in younger ovaries and lipid metabolism/inflammation in older ones.

🧠 These aging changes in ovarian tissue and immune cells may create an environment that increases ovarian cancer risk by promoting inflammation and collagen buildup.

🧠 New Northwestern University research using child-friendly EEG shows that interactive play and reading with toddlers, not screen time, significantly increases brain activity linked to attention, learning, and social processing.

👶 The study, involving 49 toddlers aged 24-44 months, found lower alpha brain waves (associated with attention) and higher theta brain waves (associated with social engagement) during natural parent-child interactions compared to movie watching.

🌟 These brain patterns of engagement were consistent across children with varying language abilities and those with autism, highlighting the importance of quality interaction for all toddlers.

New Study Finds Gendered Messaging Can Backfire: Messages that reference gender when highlighting women's success in an activity actually made kids and adults of both genders see girls and women as less capable, and also made everyone less interested in trying the activity themselves.

☀️ Princeton Engineering researchers have fixed internal defects in perovskite solar cells by adding a novel combination of zinc bromide and methyl ammonium chloride during fabrication.

⚡ This technique could boost power generation by 1% in advanced perovskite cells by allowing electrons to retain solar energy 10 times longer.

🔬 The breakthrough, published in Science on Oct. 8, stems from a new class of chemical mixtures that improve perovskite performance.

Dogs seem to associate ‘bouba’ with round shapes and ‘kiki’ with spiky shapes, study of 70 dogs finds Read Full Article #DogScience #BoubaKiki #ShapePerception
🐶 A new study published in Proceedings of the Royal Society B: Biological Sciences suggests dogs, like humans, may associate the made-up word 'Kiki' with spiky shapes and 'Bouba' with rounded shapes.

🧠 Researchers at the University of Parma in Italy conducted experiments with 70 domestic dogs, using an AI to track their gaze patterns when exposed to the sounds and corresponding shapes.

🎧 In one experiment, dogs showed a bias towards spiky shapes when 'Kiki' was played, but this bias disappeared when owners wore headphones, suggesting dogs weren't simply following owner cues.

14-year study of 3,093 adults using Fitbit data, finds that those averaging 8,875–14,161 daily steps performed better on tests of attention, cognitive control and decision-making than those averaging 5,108 steps. Higher systolic blood pressure was also linked to poorer cognitive performance

We’re surprisingly close to conserving 30% of the world’s land. Almost every country has agreed to conserve 30% of the land and sea by 2030. Study shows 27% of land may already be conserved for biodiversity, if you also count areas that aren’t globally recognised. But more work needs to be done.

Pensions save lives – Researchers analyzed the introduction of public pensions in the UK in 1909, finding that they substantially reduced elderly mortality. Read Full Article #PublicPensions #ElderlyCare #PublicHealthImpact
* 🏠 **UK Pension Act of 1908 Linked to Significant Elderly Mortality Decline:** A study using data from England and Wales (1901-1913) suggests the introduction of means-tested public pensions for those aged 70+ led to a 2.7% to 12.5% drop in elderly mortality (75+).

* 🏘️ **Reduced Crowding and Safer Retirement Key Factors:** The pension appears to have lowered mortality by decreasing residential crowding, particularly by reducing reliance on crowded poorhouses, and by enabling retirement from high-risk occupations.

* 📈 **Urban Areas Saw Greater Impact, Gender Differences Explained:** Mortality declines were more pronounced in urban areas. While women had higher pension reception rates, men showed stronger behavioral responses in reduced crowding and labor supply, offsetting the difference and leading to similar mortality reductions.

📊 **CGMs Show Big Win for Type 2 Diabetes Management**
New research in the New England Journal of Medicine reveals continuous glucose monitors (CGMs) significantly improve blood sugar control for adults with type 2 diabetes who don't use insulin.

📈 **Key Study Findings:**
* Users spent an **additional 5 hours daily** within their target blood sugar range.
* Nearly **twice as many CGM users** achieved an A1c below 7%.
* CGM users saw **0.9 percentage point greater improvement** in A1c averages.

🧑‍⚕️ **Largest Trial of its Kind:**
This 26-week study involved 283 adults across 22 U.S. primary care practices, providing strong evidence for CGMs in routine care for this population, previously under-researched.

💡 **Future of Diabetes Care:**
The findings aim to strengthen national guidelines and expand insurance coverage for CGMs, making this technology more accessible. Discuss CGMs with your primary care provider.
