Chronic pain worsened by harsh self-criticism 🩹🧠, study finds. People living with chronic pain tend to be more perfectionistic, less self-compassionate and – depending on the measure – less confident in their ability to cope. These psychological traits may intensify suffering.

Study Links Chronic Pain Severity to Anger 😠 and Sense of Injustice ⚖️. Research found people who feel wronged or unfairly treated by their condition are more likely to experience severe, long-lasting pain, suggesting that emotional factors could be just as important as biology in predicting outcomes.

Psilocybin shown to markedly reduce chronic pain and neuroinflammation 🌿💊. In animals this is firmly established with durable antinociception, and limited human studies showing the same outcome via synaptogenesis, 5-HT2A receptor modulation, and affective pain processing in a peer reviewed review.

A new study published in the Annals of Neurology is among the first to link sound sensitivity in people with chronic back pain to measurable changes in the brain - and to show those changes can improve with therapy. Read Full Article #ChronicPain #SoundSensitivity…
🔊 New research from the University of Colorado Anschutz, published today in Annals of Neurology, reveals that individuals with chronic back pain process everyday sounds more intensely due to measurable brain changes. They react more strongly than 84% of people without pain, with heightened responses in brain regions processing sound and emotional impact, and lower activity in regions that regulate reactions.

🧠 A study of 142 adults with chronic back pain and 51 pain-free controls used brain imaging. Findings show changes in the insula and auditory cortex, indicating broader sensory amplification in the brain, not just limited to the back.

✅ Pain Reprocessing Therapy (PRT) emerged as the most effective treatment, not only reducing heightened brain responses to sound but also increasing activity in brain regions that regulate unpleasant experiences, suggesting this sensitivity is treatable with psychological intervention.

A single dose of psilocybin - the active compound in magic mushrooms - reduces nerve pain for up to a month and makes a widely used painkiller work more effectively, finds a new study in mice. Psilocybin appears to restructure the way the brain’s pain-processing…
🍄 A single dose of psilocybin, found in magic mushrooms, has been shown in University of Reading research to reduce nerve pain for up to a month in mice. It works by restructuring brain pain-processing networks.

💉 Psilocybin also significantly enhances the effectiveness of gabapentin, a common nerve pain medication. When given after psilocybin's initial effect, gabapentin provided pain relief lasting up to four days, compared to weaker effects in mice not treated with psilocybin.

💡 This research, published in Communications Biology on 25 May 2026, offers a potential transformative approach for the 30-50% of people with nerve pain who don't find relief with gabapentin alone, addressing limitations of current treatments like side effects and addiction potential.

Antidepressants and antipsychotics could serve as alternatives to opioids, study finds Read Full Article #MentalHealth #OpioidAlternative #PsychiatryResearch
* ⚕️ New study from UCSF highlights non-opioid pain relief alternatives for emergency departments, aiming to reduce opioid reliance by providing physicians with a targeted list for common pain types like abdominal, back, chest, fracture, and headache.

* 💊 Common pain relievers like acetaminophen and ibuprofen show effectiveness across all examined pain types. Ketamine shows promise for chest pain, SNRIs for back pain, and antipsychotics for headache and abdominal pain.

* 🧠 Certain psychotropic medications, like gabapentin, antidepressants, and antipsychotics, can manage pain by influencing neural circuits and neurotransmitter activity, potentially reducing heightened sensitivity in the nervous system.

The Brain’s Immune Cells Keep Pain, Insomnia, and Depression Feeding Each Other: Chronic pain, broken sleep, and depression share one biological circuit, so each can start and sustain the others. Read Full Article #Neuroscience #ChronicPain #MentalHealth…
* 😴 A night of lost sleep can lower pain thresholds and increase sensitivity, as observed in studies with healthy volunteers.

* 🧠 Chronic pain, depression, and anxiety share underlying mechanisms, often involving the brain's immune cells (microglia and astrocytes) and a self-perpetuating inflammatory feedback loop.

* 💊 While behavioral therapies like CBT for insomnia show promise in improving sleep, anxiety, and depression together, direct treatments for the underlying neuroinflammation are still largely in animal studies or early trials.
