Nearly three-quarters of U.S. baby foods are ultra-processed, new study finds. Most baby food sold in U.S. grocery stores is ultra-processed, a new study finds, raising fresh concerns about what many infants and toddlers are eating during a critical window…
🍼 A new study published in the journal Nutrients found that 71% of baby food products sold in U.S. grocery stores are ultra-processed (UPF). Researchers analyzed 651 infant and toddler food products, identifying UPF as foods made in industrial settings with artificial colors, flavors, sweeteners, or additives.
🔍 Nearly three-quarters of baby food products contained additives, such as flavor enhancers, thickeners, emulsifiers, and colors. Some additives have been linked to potential health concerns, and many new food chemicals enter the market without FDA safety review.
🍬 Ultra-processed baby foods contained nearly twice as much sugar and significantly more sodium than less-processed alternatives. High intake of sugary, calorie-dense foods in early childhood is linked to heart and metabolic conditions.
⚖️ In response to these findings, states like California are enacting laws to define UPF and phase out harmful ingredients. However, federal labeling requirements for UPF are absent, leaving parents to navigate food choices independently.

Ultra-processed foods linked to lower memory and concentration in young adults
Eating a diet heavily reliant on ultra-processed foods is associated with lower memory and concentration scores in young adults. Researchers warn that these industrially processed snacks could be affecting daily brain function.
An analysis of 51 studies involving 8.8 million participants aged 23 to 77 finds that each additional 100 g/day of ultra-processed foods is associated with a 14% higher cardiovascular risk, 4% higher cancer risk, 3% higher all-cause mortality risk and 2% higher metabolic syndrome/diabetes risk

📈 A large-scale analysis of 51 studies involving over 8.8 million adults reveals a strong link between consuming ultra-processed foods (UPFs) and increased risks of major chronic diseases, including high blood pressure, metabolic syndrome/diabetes, cardiovascular events, cancer, obesity, depression/anxiety, digestive diseases, and death.
📉 For every additional 100g of UPFs consumed daily, risks for cardiovascular events rose by 14%, cancer by 4%, death from any cause by 3%, and metabolic syndrome/diabetes by 2%. A 10% increase in UPF intake by weight/energy correlated with a 16% higher risk of metabolic syndrome/diabetes.
🍎 Researchers suggest UPFs, characterized by additives and extensive industrial processing, may contribute to health issues through a "cocktail effect" of additives, altered physical composition impacting the gut microbiome, and promoting inflammation and insulin resistance.

Brain scans of 8,783 healthy Canadians aged 35-69 found people eating the most ultra-processed food (chips, soda, sugary cereal, ready meals) were about 40% more likely to have hidden brain damage like silent mini-strokes, even though their memory scores were…
🧠 A new study in JAMA Network Open links high consumption of ultra-processed foods (packaged snacks, sugary cereal, soft drinks, ready meals) to a 40% increased likelihood of small brain tissue damage in healthy adults aged 35-69, even before symptoms appear.
🧠 Researchers from the Population Health Research Institute analyzed brain scans and diet records from 8,783 Canadians. The heaviest eaters of ultra-processed foods, who consumed these items as 45% of their diet, showed more white matter damage and silent strokes compared to those who ate them as 16.5% of their diet.
🧠 The link between ultra-processed food and brain damage was notably stronger in women, who had 1.8 times the odds of silent brain damage compared to women consuming the least amount.
