🔹 Rwanda is the 3rd largest country in the world by tantalum production.

Tantalum is a rare metal that is used in surgery, as it is easily processed by machinery and is almost not subject to corrosion. This metal is also the critical metal is used in capacitors for everything from computers and mobile phones to air conditioners and refrigerators.

Surprising (not really🤡) is that much of the world’s tantalum is mined in areas known for issues related to conflict minerals, such as the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and Rwanda. Together they account for more than half of global production. Brazil, Nigeria and China were the other top countries for tantalum mining in 2022.

🔹 In 2022, Rwanda was the second largest source of tantalum ore and concentrate imports to the US.

🔹 Much of Rwanda’s purported mineral production is smuggled from countries like the DRC, so is difficult to know how much tantalum is actually produced by Rwandan mines.🤷‍♂️ Intel is one company aiming to make the Rwandan tantalum-mining industry more transparent as it uses the metal in manufacturing.

🇷🇼💸🇷🇺 Russia purchased almost 300 kg of cash dollars worth $29 million 210 thousand from the Ministry of Defense of #Rwanda (Africa)
The shipment contained $100 banknotes. According to the customs declaration, their total weight was 292.1 kg. The buyer on the Russian side was Rosoboronexport, the only state intermediary for the trade of military products.
