🗜 3D-printed Multi-Turn Potentiometer (Using Worm Gear Mechanism)

We, tinkerers, have used potentiometers whether it is of a buck-boost converter or simple audio amplifier, and at some point, we struggled with controlling it precisely.

We can get trim pots but setting those regularly is not so easy. Also, there are multi-turn potentiometers available in the market but they are generally expensive and only available in a limited range of values.

You will learn how to make a simple mechanism that can be used to turn any potentiometer into a multi-turn potentiometer.

💻 3D Printing Process Creates Objects Made of Both Liquid and Solid Materials

Typical plastic 3D printing processes turn liquids into solids. Now researchers have invented a way to integrate materials directly into the process to fabricate an object with both solid and liquid elements.

The method, invented by chemists at Martin Luther University (MLU), in Germany, paves the way for applications such as the incorporation of active medical agents in pharmaceutical products or the integration of luminous liquids in materials to provide damage monitoring, researchers said.

In addition to the examples they demonstrated, the team envisions other uses for the process. One could be to print battery parts, which tend to use combinations of both liquid and solid materials that are typically produced separately.

🔭 OpenAstroTracker

OpenAstroTracker is an open-source DIY star tracker which can be build from simple, affordable and 3D printed parts. The main intention behind this device is to provide an affordable possibility to enter the world of astrophotography.

OpenAstroTracker is an equatorial mount which "compensates for Earth's rotation by having one rotational axis parallel to the Earth's axis of rotation". You can mount a camera (mostly a DLSR or DSLM) on top of it and it rotates with the same speed as our earth rotation in order to remove stars movement relatively to the camera and allow longer exposures this way.

The mount is being controlled by an Arduino. The Arduino is controlling multiple stepper motors which in turn rotate the camera mount. The mount provides multiple options for control: LCD Keypad, USB Serial connection, Wi-Fi.

📟 Measuring Wheel

A 3D printed measuring wheel displaying both metric and imperial measurements

The circuit is designed around a ATtiny1614 microprocessor. It uses very little power when in sleep mode. The rotary encoder contains two sets of contacts which can become quite noisy resulting in incorrect readings.

I added a RC network and Schmitt trigger between each contact and microprocessor. This removes any noise generated by the contacts and provides clean switch change signals to the microprocessor. The result is precise and accurate readings. The circuit is powered by a 3.7V 120mA LIPO battery.

💻 The Lisperati1000 Is a Cyberdeck Terminal Dedicated to Lisp Programming

If you’re new to coding and want something easy to use, Python is great. For performance and capability, it’s hard to beat programming in C. But if you need some complex algorithms — particularly algorithms that do a lot of heavy mathematical lifting — then Lisp is the ideal choice.

Dr. Conrad Barski has a long history of a using Lisp to program enterprise medical software and has even authored books on the language. He wanted a small, portable device for coding Lisp on the go and built the Lisperati1000 cyberdeck terminal for the job.

The Lisperati1000 is a very compact device based on the Raspberry Pi Zero W single-board computer. Its most striking feature is the 8.8” LCD display, which has an ultra-wide aspect ratio with a resolution of 1920x480.

📟 Raspberry Pi Matrix Cube Takes LEDs to a New Dimension

Matrix panels are awesome to play with using a Raspberry Pi but why limit yourself to a 2-dimensional plane? This maker, known as M4ngolicious online, is using six panels of 64 x 64 pixels, 24,576 pixels in total, to create a portable, wireless matrix cube.

M4ngolicious designed and 3D printed custom frames for each panel along with internal structures for mounting the hardware inside. The top panel even has magnets glued into place so it can be removed to access the internal components.

In the project, M4ngolicious is using 2200mah 3S 30C LiPo battery and two YPG 20A SBEC step down converters. The battery can last between 15 and 30 minutes but will vary depending on how bright the output is while in use.

📟 3dasd - open-source DIY room-scale 3D scanner

The goal is to make this as accessible as possible! However, at this point you need to have access to a 3D printer, do some very basic soldering and assemble a few cables (JST connectors).

This is not a production-grade scanner, it’s way too slow, loud and just not accurate enough for most real-world applications. It could be a great entry into the world of 3D scanning though.

A very-very rough estimate would be around 350 USD with the bulk of it being the LIDAR sensor.

💻 Mini Raspberry Pi Server With Built In UPS

Cool project of a mini Raspberry Pi server with a built-in UPS and OLED stats display. A Raspberry Pi makes a great server for a NAS or for media streaming, home automation, or even a home security hub for your cameras. All of these projects would benefit from having a built-in UPS to ensure that the Pi is kept running in the event of a power interruption.

The mini server could last around one hour and a half with one 2,500 mAh. The UPS and associated battery could also power an additional portable display, so you could potentially make it a portable mini PC with two batteries of greater capacity.

🎛 Designing Potentiometer Knobs

Rotary potentiometers, switches, and encoders all share a basic design: adjustment is done via a shaft onto which a knob is attached, and knobs are sold separately. That doesn’t mean one knob fits all; there are actually a few different standards. But just because knobs are inexpensive and easily obtained doesn’t mean it’s not worth making your own.

Why bother 3D printing your own knobs instead of buying them? For one thing, making them means one can rest assured that every knob matches aesthetically. The ability to add custom or nonstandard markings are another bonus. Finally, there’s no need to re-invent the wheel, because author's guide to making your own knobs has it all figured out, with the OpenSCAD script to match.

Who needs to buy new potentiometer knobs when you can make your own? Armed with patience, calipers, and a 3D printer, this is quite doable.

🤖 One-piece tank chassis pushes print-in-place to new height

What’s better than 3D printing a tank chassis with working tracks? How about 3D printing the entire thing, moving parts and all, as a single piece?

The author has been sharing progress pictures and videos on his Twitter account, and just recently released the first version of his design. Version 1.0 is just the mechanics, but he’s already at work on version 2.0 which includes the ability to attach servos to drive the treads. At this writing, the design is currently downloadable directly from his site and includes CAD files, which is great to see.

One part of the design we’d like to draw your attention to is the chunky hinge that doubles as a kind of axial structure making up the body. This allows the tank to print in an unfolded state with the treads and wheels flat on the print bed. After printing, the tank gets folded up a bit like a taco to attain its final form.
