Market Insights with Gary Thomson: GBP, USD, and JPY Poised for Volatility
In this video, we’ll explore the key economic events and market trends, shaping the financial landscape. Get ready for insights into financial markets to help you navigate the week ahead. Let’s dive in!
In this episode of Market Insights, Gary Thomson unpacks the strategic implications of the week’s most critical events driving global markets.
👉 Key topics covered in this episode:
🔸 What Happened in the Markets Last Week
Japan’s election result reinforced political stability, lifting the Nikkei to record highs, while the yen unexpectedly strengthened due to positioning shifts and changing monetary policy expectations. Although the currency is supported for now, a sustained reversal in USD/JPY and EUR/JPY is not yet confirmed.
🔸 UK
Sterling has been supported by dollar weakness and relatively firm UK data, while EUR/GBP remains in correction mode. Upcoming UK unemployment data on 17 February and UK inflation on 18 February could trigger sharp moves, especially if inflation continues to exceed expectations and challenges rate-cut pricing. Would persistently high inflation force a major repricing of the Bank of England’s rate outlook and boost GBP further?
🔸 United States
The US dollar remains under pressure after its late-January sell-off, with limited fundamental support for a sustained recovery. However, the PCE Price Index on 20 February could spark short-term volatility. With markets expecting the Fed to hold rates until at least June, any inflation surprise may quickly reprice policy expectations and move FX and equity markets. Could an upside surprise in PCE inflation revive dollar strength by shifting expectations for the Fed’s first rate cut?

Dollar Index (DXY) Stabilises After CPI Release
Late January proved exceptionally volatile in the currency markets, as reflected by the ATR indicator. However, following the rebound from the four-year low (B), price swings on the DXY chart have narrowed, suggesting a degree of market stabilisation.
Friday’s CPI release had the potential to trigger sharp moves in the US dollar index, yet no major surprises emerged. According to Forex Factory data, the actual figures were broadly in line with analysts’ forecasts (inflation eased slightly as expected), and market participants headed into the long weekend, with US financial markets closed on Monday for Presidents’ Day.
Technical Analysis of the DXY Chart
On 27 January, when analysing the Dollar Index (DXY) chart, we:
→ updated the descending channel (marked in red);
→ noted that DXY was trading near a long-term support zone from which price had rebounded twice in the second half of 2025;
→ suggested that the downward momentum could be losing strength.
However, the market had other plans. Although the rally towards peak C (the former support level) is a clear sign that bearish pressure is fading, it was preceded by a false downside breakout of the aforementioned support area.
Swing analysis also points to stabilisation, based on the proportional structure:
→ peak C formed within the 50%–61.8% retracement of the A→B impulse;
→ trough D developed within the 50%–61.8% retracement of the B→C move;
→ peak E emerged within the 50%–61.8% retracement of the C→D impulse.
The previously highlighted support zone is now acting as a range where supply and demand appear balanced.
While the descending channel remains technically valid, the confident trajectory (indicated by the arrow) from the B low suggests that bears may struggle to maintain the prevailing trend of recent months.

Apple (AAPL) Shares Fall 7% In Two Days
As the chart indicates, AAPL shares declined from roughly $275 to $256 over Thursday and Friday — a drop of about 7%. This move has effectively erased the gains that followed the strong earnings report released on 29 January.
Why Is AAPL Falling?
According to media reports, negative sentiment has been driven by:
→ Data pointing to rising memory chip costs, which could weigh on profit margins.
→ Reports that the long-anticipated Siri upgrade featuring advanced AI capabilities has been delayed again.
→ Increased scrutiny of the company’s operations by the US Federal Trade Commission (FTC).
Technical Analysis of Apple (AAPL) Shares
At the start of 2026, AAPL shares broke below an ascending channel (shown in black) near the $272 level. Price and volume dynamics suggest this area has become a zone where bears are active and gaining the upper hand.
Note the following (as highlighted by the arrows):
→ On 4 February, the price edged higher slightly, but trading volumes were elevated — signalling difficulty for bulls in sustaining upward momentum.
→ The 11 February candle shows a long upper shadow, displaying the characteristics of an Upthrust After Distribution (UTAD) in Wyckoff methodology terms.
Taken together, this suggests that initiative currently lies with the bears. Price action may continue to develop within the descending channel (shown in red), with the potential to set a new low for the year.

Gold Price Falls to a 10-Day Low
As today’s XAU/USD chart shows, the price of gold has dropped below the lows of 12 February, marking its weakest level in ten days. According to media reports, several factors are weighing on bullion:
→ Easing geopolitical tensions. Safe-haven demand has diminished amid US–Iran and Russia–Ukraine negotiations.
→ Slowing US inflation. This may be prompting traders to reassess expectations for Federal Reserve policy in 2026.
→ The holiday effect. With Presidents’ Day in the US and Lunar New Year celebrations in Asia, trading volumes have declined. In such thin market conditions, prices can become more vulnerable to speculation and abrupt moves.
On 9 February, when analysing gold price movements, we:
→ confirmed the validity of the long-term ascending channel;
→ noted that following a spike in extreme volatility at the turn of the month, the market could begin seeking a new equilibrium;
→ suggested a scenario involving a contraction in price swings on the XAU/USD chart, with the potential formation of temporary balance between supply and demand around the psychological $5k mark.
Indeed, from 9 to 12 February the market formed a consolidation zone slightly above $5k — more precisely, between resistance R1 and local support S1.
Technical Analysis of the XAU/USD Chart
A false bullish breakout (indicated by the arrow) highlighted the bulls’ inability to sustain momentum and effectively became a trap for buyers.
This, in turn, allowed bears to attempt to seize the initiative, resulting in a successful break below the S1 level. Subsequently, the breached level acted as resistance (R2).
Today’s decline on the XAU/USD chart suggests that:
→ bears remain in control, as evidenced by the break of local support S2;
→ a key argument in favour of the bulls may come from the major support at the lower boundary of the long-term channel.
In February, the market has already twice returned within the boundaries of the long-term upward channel. It cannot be ruled out that the price will remain inside it. Notably, if a decisive break above the resistance line (shown in red) occurs, this could reasonably be interpreted as a breakout of a bullish flag pattern.

GBP/JPY Falls to a Year-to-Date Low
As the GBP/JPY chart shows, the pound has dropped below the 12 February low against the Japanese yen, marking its weakest level since the beginning of 2026. The pair last traded beneath the 207.500 mark in mid-December 2025.
→ The yen’s strength is supported by expectations that economic stimulus measures introduced by Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi, in coordination with the Bank of Japan, will underpin the national currency. Barclays forecasts further appreciation of the yen.
→ Sterling weakened today following reports that UK unemployment reached a five-year high in December, while wage growth slowed. This may reinforce arguments in favour of additional interest rate cuts by the Bank of England.
Technical Analysis of GBP/JPY
Long-term moving averages are turning lower, signalling potential structural shifts and possible capital reallocation after five years of an overall uptrend in GBP/JPY.
Price action is forming a well-defined descending channel. In this context:
→ the median line has switched from acting as support to serving as resistance (as highlighted by the thicker lines);
→ today, GBP/JPY is trading in the lower quarter of the channel, indicating continued bearish dominance.
It is worth noting that yesterday’s breakout above local resistance (marked by an arrow) proved to be false, triggering renewed downward momentum.
On the other hand, after dipping below the 12 February low near 207.560, the pair has started to rebound, raising the possibility of a mirrored move and a false bearish breakout.
Nevertheless, the outlook for bulls remains challenging. Even if they manage to push prices slightly higher, they may encounter resistance around 208.315 — a level where sellers previously demonstrated strength when breaking local support (shown in purple).

#NZD #forextrading #tradingtips #marketanalysis #MarketNews
New Zealand Dollar Weakens After Central Bank Decision
The New Zealand dollar weakened today after the Reserve Bank of New Zealand (RBNZ) announced its decision to keep interest rates unchanged.
While the decision itself was widely expected, the accompanying forecasts drew attention due to their dovish tone. According to the official statement:
→ monetary policy is likely to remain accommodative for some time, although the possibility of a rate hike in the fourth quarter was not ruled out;
→ inflation is returning to the target range.
The currency market reacted by pushing the NZD lower against major counterparts. NZD/USD, for example, fell to its lowest level in nearly two weeks.
Technical Analysis of NZD/USD
The New Zealand dollar had been showing bullish momentum since late autumn 2025, resulting in the formation of an ascending channel. Notably, the channel’s median line shifted from acting as resistance to serving as support (highlighted by the thicker lines).
It is worth noting that the reversal from the 21 January peak — where price touched the upper boundary — occurred in a sharp manner. Near the 2025 high, bears appear to have regained confidence and seized the initiative.
→ From a bullish perspective, the aforementioned median line may provide support.
→ From a bearish standpoint, a descending trend line drawn through the lower high of 12 February may act as resistance.
Against this backdrop, it is reasonable to assume that the market could enter a consolidation phase over the coming weeks.

FTSE 100 Index Climbs to a Record High
The UK Consumer Price Index (CPI) report released today showed a slowdown in inflation. According to Forex Factory, the annual figure came in at 3.0%, compared with 3.4% the previous month.
Media reports note that:
→ this marks the lowest level since March 2025;
→ the easing in inflation was driven by lower prices for petrol, air fares, food and education.
As a result, optimism prevails in the equity market, with expectations of monetary policy easing gaining traction. According to Trading Economics, the bullish trend is particularly evident in defence and mining stocks.
The chart of the UK’s FTSE 100 index (UK 100 on FXOpen) shows the market in a clear uptrend, with a sequence of higher highs and higher lows allowing an ascending channel to be drawn.
Technical Analysis of the FTSE 100 Chart
Bullish strength is highlighted by:
→ the price’s decisive break above the 10,600 level and its ability to hold above it this week;
→ the behaviour of the line dividing the upper half of the channel into two quarters. This line acted as resistance throughout February but was broken to the upside today — and may now serve as support.
The RSI indicator has moved into overbought territory. However, given the strength of the fundamental driver, any pullbacks are unlikely to be deep.
It is reasonable to assume that bullish sentiment will continue to dominate the FTSE 100, with 10,750 — near the upper boundary of the long-term channel — potentially serving as a target for profit-taking.

WTI Crude Reaches February High
As the XTI/USD chart shows, the price of a barrel has today moved above the highs of 4 and 11 February, rising beyond the $66 level and marking its highest point since the start of the month. Bullish sentiment is being driven by escalating geopolitical tensions, primarily linked to Iran. According to media reports:
→ Negotiations between the parties remain inconclusive. Although Tehran stated that a “general agreement” had been reached with Washington on the framework of a potential nuclear deal, US Vice-President JD Vance indicated that Iran had failed to meet US demands.
→ President Donald Trump, in turn, maintains that the use of military force remains an option.
This raises the prospect of Iran attempting to block the Strait of Hormuz — a key route for global oil and gas shipments. Any US military action could evolve into a prolonged campaign, unlike the short-lived operation in Venezuela.
Heightened geopolitical risk is therefore pushing oil prices towards fresh yearly highs.
Technical Analysis of the XTI/USD Chart
When analysing the oil price chart on 12 February, we:
→ used WTI price swings to construct a broad ascending channel (shown in purple);
→ identified patterns suggesting that initiative was shifting to the bears.
Since then, oil prices not only retreated to the lower boundary of the channel but also broke below it on the same day. The breakout level later acted as local resistance on 17 February.
Subsequently, a false bearish breakout (indicated by the arrow) signalled that selling pressure had been exhausted. Bulls then capitalised on the tense news backdrop to push prices higher.
It is possible that the 65.20 level will now act as support, with scope for a fresh yearly high in the near term. Should signs of military action emerge, traders should be prepared for a scenario in which WTI prices move well above $66.20.

EUR/USD Chart Analysis: Volatility May Return to the Market
As indicated by the Bollinger Bands width indicator, the EUR/USD market remained relatively subdued in February, with the indicator twice retreating towards its lower boundary.
However, price action over the past two sessions suggests renewed activity — the range formed between 11 and 17 February has been broken to the downside by sellers.
From a fundamental perspective, this move reflects a combination of factors, including:
→ Reports that European Central Bank President Christine Lagarde is planning to step down before the end of her term in October next year. This development is viewed as a bearish factor for the euro.
→ Minutes from the FOMC meeting showing that policymakers are in no rush to cut interest rates. Opinions were divided, with some members even open to raising the Fed rate if inflation proves persistent. The prospect of a tighter Federal Reserve stance is supportive for the US dollar.
Technical Analysis of the EUR/USD Chart
The recent bearish pressure has pushed EUR/USD back towards a key support level around 1.1777. Bears attempted to break below this level on 6 February but failed, resulting in a false breakout at point B.
While bulls may attempt a rebound from this support, the broader picture suggests that sellers currently hold a slight advantage in February, reflected in the following:
→ Price action has been forming a descending channel since 11 February (shown in red).
→ High C sits roughly halfway along the A→B bearish impulse. According to Fibonacci proportions, this is consistent with a bearish market structure.
→ Bulls have been unable to secure a foothold above key psychological levels — first above 1.2000 and subsequently above 1.1900.
If selling pressure persists, a decisive break below 1.1777 cannot be ruled out, which could in turn trigger a fresh surge in volatility.

Silver Price Breaks February Resistance Line
As seen on the XAG/USD chart, silver has today breached the upper boundary of the descending channel formed by February’s lower highs and lows.
Bullish sentiment is supported by heightened geopolitical tensions and rising demand for safe-haven assets. According to media reports:
→ On Thursday, US President Donald Trump warned Iran that it must reach an agreement on its nuclear programme, or “really bad things” would happen, setting a 10–15 day deadline.
→ In response, Tehran threatened retaliatory strikes on US bases in the region if attacked.
On 11 February, analysing the XAG/USD chart, we noted that silver was consolidating between two key levels:
→ resistance around $87.5–95
→ support near $70
Today’s bullish breakout of the channel’s upper boundary – which acted as resistance in February – can be interpreted as a move towards the $87.5–95 zone.
Confidence for bulls is further reinforced by an inverted head and shoulders (SHS) pattern. If buyers are determined, this should be confirmed by XAG/USD holding above:
→ the channel breakout level near $79
→ the psychological $80 mark.

USD/CAD Analysis Following Changes in US Tariff Policy
Currency markets opened on Monday with the US dollar under pressure, as traders assessed weekend developments related to US tariff policy. According to Reuters:
→ On Friday, the Supreme Court ruled that President Trump’s sweeping tariffs exceeded his authority.
→ In response, the US president criticised the court and introduced a blanket 15% import levy. Trump also insisted that higher-tariff agreements with trade partners should remain in force.
Against this backdrop, USD/CAD slipped below the 1.3660 level today. This comes despite the upward move observed since 11 February (marked by purple lines), which developed after Canadian inflation slowed from 2.7% to 2.4%. The weaker inflation data weighed on the Canadian dollar, as markets began pricing in the possibility of future interest rate cuts by the Bank of Canada.
Technical Analysis of the USD/CAD Chart
When analysing USD/CAD on 29 January (with the market trading near the psychological 1.3500 level), we:
→ highlighted the presence of a long-term descending channel;
→ noted that price was close to its lower boundary, which could act as support;
→ considered a rebound scenario.
Since then, USD/CAD has formed two bullish reversals near the 1.3500 area. However, on both occasions bullish momentum appeared to fade around 1.3700.
The current price action resembles a rounding top pattern, suggesting that sellers may soon attempt to regain control and push towards the lower purple boundary in an effort to resume the broader long-term downtrend.

Gold Price Rises to Highest Level Since Early February
As shown on the XAU/USD chart today, gold climbed above $5,170, reaching its highest level so far this month. The main bullish factors are:
→ US tariff uncertainty – after the Supreme Court struck down Trump’s tariffs on Friday, the US president reinstated them, initially at 10% and then announcing an increase to 15% on Saturday.
→ Heightened geopolitical tensions – media reports indicate that the US is prepared not only for targeted strikes against Iran but also for a longer military operation. The presence of two aircraft carrier groups in the region raises the risk of direct confrontation, traditionally boosting gold demand.
→ End of the Chinese holiday season – the People’s Bank of China, pursuing a reserve diversification strategy away from the US dollar, may continue purchasing physical gold.
Technical Analysis of XAU/USD
On 17 February, analysis of gold price movements confirmed the long-term ascending channel and highlighted:
→ Bearish activity visible through the descending resistance line (R);
→ Bulls could rely on the channel’s lower boundary as support.
Indeed (as the arrow shows), the market remained within the channel. Moreover, bulls broke above the resistance line (R), which then acted as support around $4,960.
This formed an upward trajectory (black lines). Bullish behaviour is notable around $5,100, where price:
→ Gapped higher at the open;
→ Rose above the line dividing the lower half of the channel into two quarters.
Considering the chart, it is reasonable to suggest bulls currently hold the initiative, supported by fundamentals. They may aim for the channel’s median, with $5,100 providing support in case of a pullback.

#IBM #stockmarket #stocktrading #marketanalysis #MarketNews
Why IBM Shares Plunged by More Than 13%
Yesterday, shares in IBM Corporation opened above $254 but closed below $224. By some estimates, this marked the company’s largest single-day decline in the past 25 years. Since the start of February, the stock has fallen by roughly 27%, its worst monthly performance since 1968.
Why Did IBM’s Share Price Drop?
The main trigger was an announcement by Anthropic about the launch of a new AI tool, Claude Code, designed to modernise legacy COBOL code.
This is particularly significant for IBM, as much of “Big Blue’s” business is tied to mainframes processing transactions for banks and government institutions in COBOL. Traditionally, upgrading such systems required “armies of consultants” and multi-billion-dollar budgets.
The new AI solution promises to automate this process, making it faster and more cost-effective. This not only poses a direct threat to IBM’s services and support revenues, but also reignites concerns that AI could reshape the entire technology sector, rendering established business models less sustainable.
Technical Analysis of IBM Shares
Throughout 2025, IBM stock traded within an ascending channel, but the psychological $300 level proved to be strong resistance. The price attempted to secure a foothold above it for several months, without success. The earnings release on 28 January turned into a bull trap and marked the beginning of an extraordinary sell-off, accompanied by rising volume on bearish candles — a sign of market weakness.
At the same time, several major analysts (including those at Goldman Sachs and Jefferies) have maintained or reiterated their “Buy” ratings. Their optimism is based on the view that panic surrounding Anthropic’s tool may be overstated, while IBM’s financial fundamentals remain solid.
Although the sharp downward momentum may continue in the near term, a support zone could emerge where several technical levels converge:
→ the psychological $200 mark;
→ the 2025 low around $215;
→ the lower boundary of an increasingly clear channel (shown in red).

Analysis of AUD/USD Ahead of Key Data Release
As the AUD/USD chart shows, the Australian dollar posted strong performance in January and February. Since the start of the year, the “Aussie” has gained nearly 6% against the US dollar.
Among the bullish drivers:
→ The policy stance of the Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA), which raised its cash rate to 3.85% in February 2026, while many other central banks are considering rate cuts.
→ A resilient labour market. Australia’s unemployment rate remains at 4.1%, giving the RBA room to keep interest rates elevated.
→ Commodity markets. High prices for gold, iron ore and energy exports continue to support Australia’s trade balance.
However, an important CPI report is due tomorrow. Inflation data could inject additional volatility into the market and test the strength of the Australian dollar.
Technical Analysis of the AUD/USD Chart
In early January, we identified an ascending channel that remained valid through February 2026, as bulls managed to break above resistance line R. Note that:
→ The upper boundary of the channel acted as resistance (resulting in the formation of peaks A–B).
→ The median line served as support.
An important observation is that after forming peak B, the market quickly fell back below the level of peak A. This suggests insufficient buying pressure to sustain the advance.
At the same time, the recent candlestick with a long upper wick — a potential bull trap and a bearish signal — may indicate that the AUD/USD reaction to the CPI report could be negative.
In that case, a break below the channel’s median line cannot be ruled out, opening the way for a test of the psychological 0.7000 level.

The Dollar Index (DXY) May Close February Higher
The second half of February has seen the dollar index strengthen, driven by a combination of bullish factors:
→ A hawkish Fed stance. Minutes from the latest FOMC meeting revealed differing views on rate cuts. With inflation remaining resilient, some members even left the door open to further tightening.
→ Rising tensions between the US and Iran, along with uncertainty surrounding trade tariffs, have boosted demand for the dollar as a safe-haven asset.
→ Recent data pointing to solid industrial output and labour market resilience have reinforced confidence in the strength of the US economy.
As a result, an upward trend line (shown in blue) has formed on the DXY chart, increasing the likelihood that the index will finish February in positive territory after three consecutive months of decline.
Technical Analysis of the DXY Chart
On 16 February, when analysing the dollar index (DXY), we:
→ Updated the descending channel (marked in red), originating in November 2025.
→ Highlighted strong demand, reflected in the confident upward trajectory (shown by the arrow) following the brief break below the multi-month low of 96.50 in late January.
Lower highs at points A and B suggest that the upper boundary of the channel continues to act as resistance, while the hesitant price action after breaking the 5 February high indicates waning bullish momentum. This raises the possibility that the blue uptrend line could soon come under pressure from renewed bearish attempts.
On the other hand, there are clear signs of active demand near the key 96.50 level. Therefore, in the longer term, bulls may regain strength and attempt to overturn the broader downtrend.
