Eid al-Adha is an Islamic festival that marks the story of Prophet Ibrahimโ€™s willingness to sacrifice his son in obedience to God. In 2026, it is expected to begin around 27 May, depending on moon sighting. Muslims perform qurbani, the ritual sacrifice of animals like sheep, goats, or cows. The meat is distributed to people in need.

In 1945, a Japanese soldier named Hiroo Onoda continued hiding in the Philippines and refused to believe World War II had ended. He stayed in the jungle for nearly 29 years, surviving on stolen food and guerrilla tactics because he thought surrender orders were enemy propaganda. Onoda finally surrendered in 1974 after his former commanding officer traveled to the island and personally ordered him to stand down.

In Iceland, baby names were once controlled by strict language laws. A government naming committee checked whether names matched Icelandic grammar, spelling, and pronunciation rules. Traditional Icelandic names like โ€œJรณn,โ€ โ€œGuรฐrรบn,โ€ and โ€œEinarโ€ were commonly approved because they fit the language system. Some foreign names like โ€œHarriet,โ€ โ€œDuncan,โ€ and โ€œEnriqueโ€ were rejected for years. Parents could not officially register unapproved names on legal documents. Iceland later relaxed some of these rules, but naming laws still exist today.

By observing shadows in two cities, he calculated the Earth was about 40,000 km around.

The Tuskegee Study was a USA government experiment from 1932 to 1972. It involved Black men with syphilis who were told they were getting free health care. But doctors did not give them medicine to cure the disease. They just watched the sickness get worse. The men did not know the truth and were not allowed to leave the study. This caused a lot of harm and suffering.

In Victorian England, people sometimes photographed their dead relatives as a final memory. This practice was called post-mortem photography and became common after cameras became more affordable in the 1800s. Families would dress the deceased, pose them naturally, and keep the photos as cherished keepsakes. Since photography was expensive at the time, these images were often the only photograph a family ever had of that person.
In this picture the youngest child has died. See source.
