The Vestal Virgins were priestesses of Vesta in ancient Rome. Girls were usually chosen between the ages of 6 and 10 and served for 30 years: 10 years learning, 10 years performing their duties, and 10 years training new priestesses. They took turns guarding Vesta's sacred fire so it was never left unattended. If the fire went out, the responsible Vestal was whipped. Breaking their vow of chastity was rare. A Vestal found guilty was sentenced to be buried alive, while her sexual partner, if identified, was publicly beaten to death. Most Vestals completed their service, retired with a generous pension and great respect, and were then free to marry, although few did.

Cabbage leaves have natural anti-irritant and antibiotic properties. They may reduce breast swelling, pain, and inflammation during breastfeeding or weaning. Cold cabbage leaves can improve blood flow and help tissue drainage. People with sulfa allergies might react. Overuse can lower breast milk supply. ๐Ÿฅฌโ„๏ธ

Chess is widely believed to have originated in India from the game chaturanga around the 6th century AD. It spread to Persia, where it became known as shatranj, and later reached the Islamic world before arriving in Europe. Between about 1475 and 1500, major rule changes transformed chess into the modern game. The queen became the most powerful piece, and bishops gained their modern movement. The first recorded chess tournament was held in Spain in 1575. The first official World Chess Championship followed in 1886. In 1997, IBM's Deep Blue defeated Garry Kasparov in a match, marking a major milestone in computer chess.

From 1993 to 1997, the Heaven's Gate cult taught that a spacecraft hidden behind the Comet Haleโ€“Bopp would carry its members to a higher existence. On 26 March 1997, authorities discovered the bodies of 39 members in a mansion near San Diego, California, after they died in a coordinated mass suicide directed by cult leader Marshall Applewhite. The incident became one of the most widely known examples of the dangers of destructive cults and extreme belief systems.

Hidden beneath the Guatemalan rainforest is El Mirador, one of the largest ancient Maya cities ever discovered. Its monumental structures were built centuries before famous Maya cities such as Tikal reached their peak. The enormous La Danta pyramid rises about 70 meters above the surrounding landscape, with its base covering an area larger than several city blocks. El Mirador flourished around 2,000 years ago before being gradually abandoned and reclaimed by the jungle.

During Ivan Kupala Night, celebrated in parts of Ukraine, Belarus, Poland, and other Slavic countries, unmarried women traditionally weave flower wreaths with candles and set them afloat on rivers. According to folklore, the way a wreath drifts is believed to predict a woman's romantic future. The festival also features bonfires that people jump over for purification and good fortune, blending ancient Slavic pagan traditions with later Christian influences after the celebration became associated with the feast of St. John the Baptist.

The Denmark Strait is home to Earthโ€™s largest waterfall, but it is completely underwater. It lies between Greenland and Iceland. Cold, dense water cascades roughly 3,500 metres down toward the ocean floor. This drop is more than three times the height of Niagara Falls. The flow happens because cold, salty water is denser than warmer water. As the dense water moves through the Denmark Strait, it sinks and flows downward along the ocean floor. Scientists describe this underwater feature as a cataract rather than a normal waterfall.

Your brain can create a sense of dรฉjร  vu even when you have never experienced the situation before. One theory suggests it happens when the brain's systems for familiarity and memory briefly become out of sync. You may feel that a moment is familiar without being able to recall an actual previous experience. Brain studies suggest that dรฉjร  vu is linked to memory-processing regions, including areas of the temporal lobe.

The Sahara Desert was not always a desert. Thousands of years ago, parts of it were covered by grasslands, lakes, and rivers. Ancient rock art found across the region shows people hunted animals such as giraffes and hippos there when the climate was much wetter.
And, one day it may again be like this..

In 1875, Charles Darwin suspected two Saxifraga species, S. rotundifolia and S. umbrosa, might be carnivorous after seeing sticky hairs trap insects. Scientists could not prove it then. In 2026,on the 4th of August, researchers confirmed a different species, S. candelabrum, is carnivorous. It grows on nutrient-poor mountain rocks in China, where sticky hairs trap insects and digestive enzymes break them down, allowing the plant to absorb nutrients. ๐ŸŒฟ
