NO.78.
Outdoor Altar in the Prayer Area of Fatima / Paula Santos
• Architects: Paula Santos
• Location: Fátima, 2495 Fátima, Portugal
• Project Year: 2016
client: Santuário de Fátima
The Centenary of the Apparitions of Fatima and the visit of the Pope Francisco on the 13th of May 2017, justified the project and the construction of the new Outdoor Altar in the Prayer Area of Fatima, a permanent work for outdoor ceremonies.
The exterior Outdoor Altar includes in the lower floor a Sacristy, a Chapel of the Sacred Reserve and support areas for the priests.
The project also allowed the mobility for the disabled to the old Basilica, the improvement of the existing colonnades and the redesign of the staircase to access all religious structures.
A fiberglass cover coated on both sides was studied by the team project with INEGI. The cover has 600 m2 of suspended area, supported only by a block of white concrete within which are all technical and vertical accesses.
The building's architecture has the intervention of Filip Moroder for the Image of Christ, João Mendes Ribeiro for the liturgical places and Fernanda Fragateiro for the sculpture Matéria Espiritual.
The architectural intervention has a grand scenographic importance in a sacred place and we intended it to result sublime and harmonious in the vast praying square.
Prayer Area
The Prayer Area is a large square, bordered by leafy trees in northern and southern sides and outlined in eastern and western sides by the Basilica of Our Lady of the Rosary of Fatima and the Basilica of the Holy Trinity, respectively. It is a place that invites us to interiority and prayer and brings together large assemblies during celebrations.
The new presbytery, dedicated on May 2016, can be used by a total of 120 concelebrants and is the project of the greek architect Alexandros Tombazis, the very same designer of the Basilica of the Most Holy Trinity.
Its construction, which lasted for more than one year, included the building of a second underground floor, mainly intended to support services, Tabernacle and Sacristy. It has direct access to the presbytery floor by stairways and by lift.
The new presbytery is now closer to the Prayer Area, which meant a reformulation of the staircases, keeping the same time of limestone used in the Shrine.

Small-scale architecture : Atyp truhlářství, Zámečnictví Pospíšil
Lighting : Etna s.r.o. (iGuzzini)
Architectural competition : 2002
Project : 2004
Text description provided by the architects. The main idea behind the design of the reconstructed square in Frýdlant was to create an open, unobstructed public space – a square that allows residents and visitors to enjoy all types of activities.
The use of three types of paving tiles, two types of stone and the patterns in which these were laid differentiates various types of spaces on the square. With the exception of the parking lot, the square was realized as a barrier-free space.
The central part of the square is entirely open for the reasons stated above. This rectangular space and, in fact, the entire square, is dominated by a fountain featuring a statue of Albrecht von Wallenstein. The silhouette of the Wallenstein statue standing on a separate granite pedestal installed several metres away is reflected on the surface of the fountain’s water, which flows into the granite pool. The bronze statue from the original Wallenstein fountain from 1914 and the new fountain form an integral, illuminated composition. This dominant feature of the square is situated along its north side on an axis with Kostelní Street and divides the central part of the square into two halves. The divided square can be used for various purposes such as fairs, concerts and theatrical performances. The central part of the square is clearly defined by a distinct type of dark basalt tiles, new public lighting and town installations such as information panels, benches, waste bins, bike stands, a drinking fountain, etc. placed around its perimeter. The uniform basalt surface also features the outline of the former town hall made from the original basalt cobblestones. The foundations of the Renaissance town hall were discovered by an archaeological excavation during the reconstruction of the square.
The space in front of the current town hall in the northwest part of the square is a representative area for the gathering of citizens. A mobile stage can be installed in the open space next to four wooden flag pole stands featuring the town crest.
Located on the opposite, southeast side of the square with sycamore trees and benches are cafes and restaurants with outdoor summer seating. The two opposite ends of the square are both paved with the same large granite paving tiles.
The historical parcelisation of the square is reflected in an abstract manner in the small granite tiles of the pavements around the central part of the square. Paths for car traffic and parking spaces on the northeast and southwest sides of the square are differentiated from pedestrian paths by a distinct granite tile pattern.

A special challenge with the task has been that ancient monuments have been found on the building site that give a story about Denmark's history through a thousand years. Most visible is a protected brick ruin of the canons' monastery from the 12th century, which is integrated into an exhibition space to convey the site's many cultural-historical layers.
The building consists of a single, elongated volume with a saddle roof that stands on pillars above the protected archaeological finds. The length of the building is along the square with a scale and roof slope that follows the neighboring buildings on the square. The archetypal building form has a sculptural skew to the south, to create more light and air towards the neighboring buildings in the courtyard.
To the south is an intimate courtyard, bounded by a wall that frames the street spaces along Sønderportsgade and Rykind.
The upper part of the building is clad with specially developed brick shells in reddish-brown hues, related to the town and the area's typical, brick houses, but by virtue of the larger format of the shells in a contemporary interpretation. The lower part has glass facades, which protect the ruin and at the same time expose the unique finds.

• Type: square renovation
Client: CONSEIL GÉNÉRAL DE L’AVEYRON
Cost: 924 000 € HT
Fontainiste : FC URBAN DESIGNER
Paysagiste : FRANÇOISE PERSOUYRE
Ratio : 1 562 €/m2
•
--Classified as a historical monument as a whole and surrounded by arcades surmounted by flamboyant Gothic or Renaissance style residences, it has hosted every Thursday morning for almost 8 centuries one of the most picturesque markets in the Southwest.
Activities of the central fountain: its water jets tell the time; and unique in France, they dance to the rhythm of the 48 carillon bells, one of the most remarkable in the region.--
From April 2 to November 31, 2013, Eurovia Rodez carried out the renovation of Place Notre-Dame in Villefranche-de-Rouergue (12), a site classified "Bâtiment de France".
This site presented technical and town planning constraints that the agency was able to face.
The particularities of this project:
• Earthworks of the existing
• Layout of the square in paving stones according to the techniques used in the Middle Ages
• Pavement structure in gravel cement
• Stormwater systems and slotted gutters in Corten steel
• Laying of 10x25x20 limestone paving stones; recovery from old streets of the city according to cal-pinage architect
• Maximum required joint 1 cm treated by mineralization (55,000 pavers cleaned and re-calibrated before laying)
• Installation of visible bronze joint following a particular pattern
• Installation of Roman bronze numeral for luminous clock
• Jet fountain (except lot)
Were also carried out in the same spirit of limestone paving, 3 lanes located under the peripheral arcades in 2010, 2011 and 2012. Thus, the whole of the place and the arcades are renovated in paving. The collegiate church is then highlighted.
