Solar overtakes coal in the United States as of May 2026

In May 2026, the United States hit a major turning point: solar power produced more electricity than coal for the first time in history. โ˜€๏ธ

This shift marks a massive change in the national energy landscape. For decades, coal served as a primary backbone of power generation. Now, the rapid construction of solar farms has turned the tables. This decentralized setup creates new headaches, though. Unlike a central, guarded coal plant, solar parks are spread across vast distances and are much harder to protect from theft or vandalism. ๐Ÿšง

This is a sharp reversal from just a few years ago, when coal provided a significantly larger portion of the grid's power compared to the then-developing solar sector. โšก

Protecting these widespread assets is becoming a critical priority for the industry. You might notice more security patrols or camera systems if you happen to pass by these energy sites in the coming months.

The energy map of the country has officially changed.

Big Rooter Power: New 1.2 GW Solar Farm in Bremond

Construction has kicked off for Panamint Capital's massive new solar energy project in Bremond, Texas, which will eventually generate 1.2 GW of power. This installation aims to change how we use industrial land by placing clean energy infrastructure directly alongside active fossil fuel operations.

The project, known as Big Rooter Power, will be built on the site of the Twin Oaks power station. Instead of clearing the land, the developers will install 2,000,000 solar panels around the existing coal mining facilities. This $1.7 billion development is divided into three distinct steps to manage the transition:

๐Ÿ”น The first phase, Big Rooter West, adds 491 MW of capacity by August 2028.
๐Ÿ”น The second phase, Big Rooter East, adds 658 MW, with construction starting in December 2026 and finishing by August 2029.
๐Ÿ”น The entire project will create over 800 construction jobs in the region.

While other energy initiatives like the Gateway Solar & Storage site in Illinois have paved the way for reusing older industrial land, this site is set to become the largest solar array ever built at an active coal mine in North America. It is a practical test of how to squeeze more life and electricity out of land that is already tied to the power grid.

Repurposing old industrial sites is the next logical step for grid growth.

New 15% Tariff on Solar Materials in the US

The White House has officially introduced a 15% tariff on all imported polysilicon used for solar energy. This government action is designed to stop the reliance on foreign supply chains for critical energy hardware. โš ๏ธ

This change follows an investigation conducted under Section 232, a law that allows the government to restrict imports if they threaten national security. The new rules go beyond raw materials. They set strict price floorsโ€”minimum prices that importers cannot undercutโ€”for a wide range of specific components:

๐Ÿ”น Solar ingots and wafers
๐Ÿ”น Solar cells
๐Ÿ”น Solar modules

Previously, manufacturers could source these parts cheaply from global suppliers, which kept installation costs for homeowners and businesses quite low. By forcing importers to meet these minimum price requirements, the US government is intentionally making foreign goods less competitive compared to domestic alternatives.

Domestic manufacturing now comes with a mandatory price tag.

Global solar capacity just hit the 3 terawatt milestone

The world has officially crossed the 3 terawatt (TW) threshold for solar power capacity, marking a clear change in how we generate electricity. This rapid expansion is led by major deployments across China and several emerging markets. ๐Ÿš€

One terawatt is enough energy to power roughly 750 million homes, so reaching three is a significant jump in scale. However, this growth requires more than just installing panels. We now need to upgrade grid infrastructureโ€”the network of power lines and substations that delivers electricity to our homes.

It also means investing in long-duration energy storage, which refers to massive batteries or systems designed to save electricity for days rather than just a few hours. These systems help balance demand when the sun isn't shining. For perspective, the world only hit its first 1 terawatt milestone in 2022. Tripling that capacity in just a few years highlights the fast pace of this transition compared to earlier energy efforts.

We are moving from a world of just making power to a world of smart storage.

Tesla stops sales of its Solar Roof after 8 years

Tesla has officially ended new orders for its Solar Roof, closing the door on the energy-generating tiles that first debuted in 2016.

The product was meant to be a drop-in replacement for traditional roofing, offering power generation without the bulky look you might be used to with standard panels. Despite the ambitious vision, the system faced challenges with installation speed and high project costs. The company has now redirected its official web page for the product to its standard solar panel offerings, signaling a full pivot away from the integrated tile design.

While the Solar Roof disappears, Tesla continues to sell its standard solar panels. These remain the go-to solution for residential customers, as they are significantly easier to mount on existing roof structures and typically come at a more accessible price point than a full-tile replacement.

It is a sober end for a product that aimed to change how homes interact with the grid.

Some big ideas simply run out of runway.

California Assembly clears path for plug-in solar

The California State Assembly has passed SB 868, a bill that could change how you get electricity at home. This legislation aims to simplify the rules for small, "plug-in" solar systems so you can easily install them on your balcony.

Right now, adding even a small amount of solar power involves complex permit applications and utility coordination. It is often too complicated for a regular person to manage. This bill cuts through that bureaucracy. The Senate now needs to review the changes before the law can be finalized.

Traditional rooftop solar projects cost thousands of dollars and require professional installers to set up. In contrast, these balcony kits are designed for easy, personal use. They offer an entry-level way for renters and homeowners to lower their utility bills without a massive, expensive renovation. ๐Ÿš€

Clean energy should be as simple as plugging in a device.

A new 1,600-hour stability record for solar cells

Researchers have successfully applied a protective coating to tin-based perovskite solar cells, allowing them to maintain 95% of their power output even after 1,600 hours of continuous operation. ๐Ÿš€

These perovskite materials are naturally more efficient and cheaper to produce than the silicon panels currently found on most rooftops. They have long struggled with fragility, often breaking down quickly when exposed to air or moisture. This new 'raincoat' layer acts as a shield against that environmental decay.

โž– The coating is molecularly designed to block moisture without hindering light absorption.
โž– It completely eliminates the need for toxic lead, which was a major drawback of earlier prototypes.
โž– The cells maintain consistent output during continuous simulated sunlight tests.
โž– The process is designed for easy integration into existing industrial manufacturing lines.

While traditional silicon panels have dominated the energy sector for decades due to their long lifespan, early versions of perovskite solar cells often failed in just a matter of weeks. This development bridges the stability gap that previously kept this cheaper, more efficient technology from reaching your home.

Clean energy is finally gaining the durability it needs to move from the lab to the real world.

The era of fragile, short-lived solar tech is coming to an end.

AI tool identifies solar panel power loss

An international team of researchers developed an AI-assisted technique that detects energy drops in solar panels with a 0.5% error rate. This system calculates efficiency losses by analyzing a single luminescence image, which records the light energy emitted by solar cells.

Traditional inspections often require bulky equipment or multiple time-consuming electrical measurements at each individual unit. This new method streamlines the maintenance process significantly for large-scale energy projects.

Key details of the testing phase include:

โž– Evaluation using 300 distinct field-retrieved modules.
โž– Successful verification through drone imaging at a 186 kW solar farm.
โž– Automated processing that avoids the need for complex, multi-angle scans.

Previous inspection standards relied on manual checks that were slower and prone to higher margin errors. The model accurately pinpoints localized damage by comparing the visual data against expected power output levels.

Global solar power generation surpasses nuclear

In 2025, global solar power generation surpassed nuclear power for the first time. Solar output jumped by 30%, while installed nuclear capacity remained flat at 399.5 GW.

Back in March 2025, wind power beat nuclear output monthly, and solar followed in April 2025. Operating nuclear capacity dropped to 368.6 GW, supplying just 8.8% of world electricity, down from 17.5% in 1996.

Building a new nuclear reactor takes an average of nearly 11 years with frequent delays. Meanwhile, falling battery storage costs and rapid solar expansion let power grids handle variable clean energy much faster.

Tesla will buy power from a massive new Arizona solar plant

A sprawling 2,000-acre solar farm in the desert will soon power major operations after breaking ground on October 6. ContourGlobal is building the 509-megawatt facility in Mohave County, Arizona, under an agreement to send 90 percent of its electricity output directly to Tesla.

The facility will combine over 760,000 solar panels with more than 300 battery storage containers using lithium iron phosphate batteries. These batteries can store about 1.4 gigawatt-hours of energy and deliver full power for four hours. Once operations begin in 2028, the site will produce more than 1.1 terawatt-hours of clean electricity annually.

That yearly output equals the electricity demand of up to 120,000 average homes. The project also brings about 400 local construction jobs to the area along with a new access road connecting to a historic stretch of Route 66.

The facility connects directly to the transmission network of the Western Area Power Administration.
