Bolsonaro Leads Lula Into Brazil’s Runoff

Flávio Bolsonaro finished first in Brazil’s presidential election, with 47.03% of valid votes to President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva’s 45.16%. Neither cleared 50%, so they will face each other again on October 25.

Lula had expected to end the race in the first round. Instead, he enters the runoff behind the son of former president Jair Bolsonaro, who called the result proof that Brazil wants change.

Lula said the result was unexpected and that he had been sure he would win outright.

The congressional vote made the race harder for Lula even if he wins the presidency.

Bolsonaro’s Liberal Party is projected to hold 28 of the Senate’s 81 seats from February 2027, while right-wing parties and allies are expected to control more than 45 seats.

Brazil may elect Lula again and give him a chamber built to price every vote.

The runoff is no longer about whether Lula can win. It is about whether Brazil wants a fourth term for Lula or the return of Bolsonaroism under a new surname.

The City Between Two Drone Fleets

Oleshky, a city across the Dnipro from Kherson, is starving inside a battlefield both armies have turned into a kill zone. About 2,000 civilians, including roughly 40 children, remain among mines, drones, burned cars and destroyed infrastructure. The last known food delivery by road arrived on May 26.

Residents told the New York Times they are cooking their last food stores: one beet, a few potatoes, an onion, a zucchini, a tomato and barley. No carrots. No regular water, electricity, gas, heat or medical care.

A city that once held more than 20,000 people has been reduced to old people searching collapsed basements for scraps while drones decide whether a trip outside ends in food or death.

Ukraine says Russia blocks evacuations, intimidates civilians who receive aid and intercepts drone deliveries. Moscow says Ukrainian forces prevent residents from leaving and disrupt food and water shipments. The competing accounts have one shared fact: civilians cannot safely get out, and food cannot safely get in.

Russia captured Oleshky on the first day of the full-scale invasion, February 24, 2022. After losing Kherson later that year, Russian forces used Oleshky as a fortified position across the river, with artillery and drone sites aimed at the Ukrainian-held city.

Ukraine now strikes back from Kherson. Between them lies a river that became a front line, roads seeded with mines by one side or both, and a civilian population that neither army has extracted.

Russia drops food and medicine by drone. Ukraine shoots down some of the drones, Russian officials say. Russia says Ukraine’s drones are the problem. The UN and Red Cross are being asked to arrange a corridor. Nobody has one.

A Russian-held city is starving. Ukraine calls the residents “our people.” Russia calls it Ukraine’s fault. The drones are bipartisan.

Geography Returns With a Knife

The global economy spent three decades pretending distance was dead. Then Iran squeezed the Strait of Hormuz and reminded everybody that oil still needs a narrow piece of water, a ship and a captain willing to enter a kill zone.

The U.S.-Israeli war on Iran has turned Hormuz into a tariff booth operated with mines, drones and missiles.

Oil has begun moving again, but largely under U.S. Navy escort.

Iran’s power is not technological parity with Washington. It is the map: one shoreline beside the world’s most important energy chokepoint.

That is why a regional war now reaches supermarkets, diesel pumps, factories and farms far from the Gulf. Higher energy prices feed inflation.

Inflation pressures central banks. Interest rates rise. Transport costs jump. The same route that carries Gulf oil also carries the cost of fertilizer, food and electricity to countries with no vote in the war.

The Houthis learned the same lesson at Bab el-Mandeb, the southern gateway to the Red Sea. Iran cannot match the American fleet. The Houthis cannot match Iran.

But each can sit beside a corridor that richer countries built their economies around and charge the planet for passing through.

Globalization did not abolish geography. It put supply chains on top of it and called the result resilience.

The new world order is brutally physical. Ukraine is a hinge between Europe and Eurasia. Taiwan anchors the island chain off China’s coast.

The Panama Canal needs rain. The Rhine needs water. Hormuz needs an agreement, or an escort fleet. Every app still depends on a port, a river, a cable, a refinery and a strait somebody else can close.

Trump said at the UN, “To the victor belong the spoils,” speaking about Venezuela’s oil. Iran heard the same doctrine and found its own spoils: tolls on global trade. The American answer is naval power. The Iranian answer is geography.

The ships move again only when a warship says they can. That is not free trade. It is a convoy system with a Bloomberg terminal.

Iran’s Three-Front Security State

Iran woke to a patrol ambush in Sistan and Baluchestan, two executions in Isfahan and a warning that Starlink could become a military target. The state faces gunmen on a southeastern highway, prisoners in its jails and satellite terminals on its rooftops.

Gunmen attacked a police patrol from the Nokju station near Bampur on the Bampur–Iranshahr road. Two officers, Amirhossein Ghasemi and Nezam Dastgoshadeh, were killed and a third was wounded, according to Iranian media.

No group immediately claimed responsibility. Tasnim, a state-linked outlet, blamed forces it described as affiliated with the “U.S.-Israeli enemy.”

Iran also executed Alireza Sepahi and Alireza Raeisi, two men arrested during the January protests in Isfahan. Iran’s judiciary said they were convicted of membership in an armed rebel group, “waging war against God” and involvement in the deaths of four police officers.

Rights groups described them as protesters tried in the Alikhani Square case. The executions bring to at least seven the number of defendants in that case put to death, according to rights-monitoring reports.

Mohammad Amin Aghamiri, secretary of Iran’s Supreme Council of Cyberspace, said the authorities had disabled Starlink terminals during the January unrest.

He warned that satellite-internet infrastructure used for military purposes could become a target. Tehran treats internet access as a battlefield because a phone signal can mobilize a crowd faster than a police van can disperse it.

Iranian Armed Forces Chief of Staff Maj. Gen. Ali Abdollahi gave the external version. A new war against Iran, he said, would spread across the region.

If Washington moves against Tehran before or after the midterms, Iran would strike U.S. interests without limits. The message is aimed at Washington, but it lands on every Gulf state hosting American troops.

Iran calls its enemies terrorists, rioters and foreign agents. The categories change according to the battlefield. The answer does not: treat every threat as war, then make the target disappear.

Chosenness Has a Finance Department

Rabbi Dov Lando says Israel would have been better off never being founded. His political allies negotiate with the government. The state’s spiritual value and its payment schedule belong to separate departments.

Lando exposed a disagreement over what Jewish chosenness requires. In the Haredi model, Jews owe obligations to Torah. The state earns its keep by supporting that life. Religious Zionism gives land and sovereignty a sacred purpose. Secular Zionism translates chosenness into democracy and military morality. Each camp arrives with a different job description for Israel.

Religious Zionists want the army to secure the promised land. Secular Zionists want it to protect the country and certify its moral distinction. Lando’s standard asks whether the national project serves Torah.

A flag answers that question poorly. A budget line does better.

Netanyahu’s coalition makes these competing interpretations administratively compatible. Politicians who sanctify sovereignty need votes from politicians whose religious authority questions the state’s very existence.

The latter can collect public funding without purchasing the accompanying theology.

Three versions of chosenness share one treasury. Coalition negotiations handle the exchange rate.

Neutrality, NATO-Compatible

Ukrainian lawmaker Oleksii Honcharenko has put neutrality on the negotiating table. It comes with NATO cooperation and a Ukrainian army financed from a joint European budget. Moscow gets the label. Kyiv keeps the military connections. Europe gets the invoice.

On Oct. 5, Ukrainian News reported his formula: “We cannot defeat Russia. Russia cannot defeat us.” Honcharenko proposes separate agreements on shipping, energy and civilian infrastructure, each with its own guarantor.

Sanctions on Russian energy would ease in exchange for concessions, then return if attacks resumed. Peace would arrive in installments.

Calling this “Ukrainians want a ceasefire to rearm” turns one politician’s proposal into a national confession.

Honcharenko’s neutrality preserves Western military cooperation and European army funding. His plan gives Russia sanctions relief while keeping Ukraine’s defense tied to the West.

Ukraine would retain something worth bringing to the next confrontation.

Poroshenko’s European Solidarity announced on Oct. 5 that it could no longer continue its political partnership with Honcharenko over his positions on ending the war and Ukraine’s future security arrangements. Even discussing the price of compromise carries a domestic bill.

In December 2022, former German Chancellor Angela Merkel described the 2014 Minsk agreement as an attempt to “give Ukraine time” to strengthen its defenses. Honcharenko’s proposal puts neutrality alongside continued NATO cooperation and European funding for Ukraine’s army.

A ceasefire can stop the shooting while the military budget keeps working. Merkel explained the value of the interval afterward. Honcharenko puts the financing in the prospectus.

The Army Needs an Escort

Military police went to Modi’in overnight to arrest a deserter. By morning, the soldiers had left under police protection. The deserter celebrated surrounded by hundreds of protesters.

Reports offered competing versions of the operation. One described a failed arrest after violence against police.

Another said protesters stormed a police station and forcibly freed the detainee.

A third described a crowd forcing its way into a building to prevent his arrest. The ending stayed consistent: the arrest target stayed, and the arresting force needed an escort out.

The opposition promptly opened its campaign office at the scene. Gadi Eisenkot promised a draft law that would strengthen the army. Naftali Bennett offered a financial sanction: “In our government, anyone who doesn’t serve won’t get a shekel.”

Avigdor Lieberman supplied the coalition arithmetic: “Without the draft dodgers, Bibi has no government.”

Netanyahu depends on the political partners the opposition blames for obstructing military service.

His rivals promise to bring them into line once they take office. The soldiers sent to enforce the existing rules needed police protection to leave.

The deserter got his celebration immediately. Enforcement comes after the election.

Diplomacy Without Notice

Trump says he is "always open to direct talks with Iran." On Monday, his Treasury warned that foreign banks still transacting with sanctioned Iranian institutions "could be targeted at any time without advance notification."

The invitation is open. So is the penalty box.

Tehran has answered the first offer. Iran's president says negotiating with Washington is meaningless. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent says U.S. sanctions froze Iran's oil exports completely last month, as the rial hit record lows.

On Monday evening, Trump linked Iran to the attempted attack aboard a flydubai flight. Accounts called it an attempted crash, a hijacking attempt and a terrorist attack. Asked whether Iran was responsible for "this attack," Trump answered, "Yes."

Trump defends the war despite higher U.S. fuel prices and has taken the argument onto the campaign trail with "We're saving the world." American drivers get to contribute at the pump.

Telegram channels associated with the Iranian opposition reported air-defense activity above the Revolutionary Guard's al-Mahdi base in Urmia and explosions in the Strait of Hormuz. Those reports supply the soundtrack but do not establish who fired or what was hit.

Saving the world comes with a campaign slogan and a fuel surcharge.

She Survived a Botched Execution. Now Christa Pike Is Awake and Speaking #️⃣

Christa Pike, the Tennessee death-row inmate whose execution failed last week, is conscious and able to speak, according to her attorneys. The development comes days after officials attempted to put her to death by lethal injection in a case that has raised new questions about the state’s execution procedures.

Pike, 50, was scheduled to be executed on September 30 at the Tennessee prison where she has been held for decades. The procedure did not go as planned. After receiving two doses of pentobarbital, she reportedly remained alive and was eventually placed on a ventilator.

Her attorneys now say Pike has regained consciousness and is communicating. They describe her condition as serious, however, and say she faces a prolonged recovery.

According to the legal team, Pike suffered significant injuries to her hands during the failed execution, including burns, swelling and blistering. Her lawyers have requested access to medical records and other documentation that could help establish exactly what happened inside the execution chamber.

The case has quickly become a major issue for Tennessee officials. Gov. Bill Lee ordered an independent review of the execution and paused subsequent executions in the state while the circumstances are investigated.

Pike’s lawyers are also seeking to have her death sentence changed to life in prison without the possibility of parole. They argue that the failed execution and the injuries she sustained raise serious constitutional and legal questions about whether the state should be permitted to attempt another execution.

Pike was convicted in the 1995 killing of Colleen Slemmer, a 19-year-old woman who was a fellow student at a Tennessee technical college. Prosecutors said Pike and two accomplices lured Slemmer into a wooded area, where she was attacked and killed.

The case attracted national attention because of the brutality of the crime and Pike’s age at the time. She was 18 when Slemmer was murdered, making her one of the youngest women ever sentenced to death in the United States.

Pike has spent decades on death row while her case moved through the courts. Her execution had already been delayed several times, including because of questions surrounding the state’s lethal-injection procedures.
The latest failure has placed those procedures under renewed scrutiny.

The central question now is what happened during the execution attempt and why the state was unable to carry it out. Medical and legal records are expected to play a key role in determining whether the problems were caused by the equipment, the injection process, Pike’s medical condition or a combination of factors.

For now, Pike remains alive and under medical care.
Her attorneys say the fact that she is conscious and speaking represents a significant change from the days immediately following the failed execution.

But they caution that her recovery could be lengthy and that the full extent of her injuries remains unclear.
The state’s investigation could ultimately determine whether Tennessee attempts to carry out Pike’s sentence again—or whether the extraordinary circumstances surrounding the failed execution lead to a different legal outcome.

What was supposed to be the final hours of a death-row inmate’s life has instead opened a new chapter in a case that has already lasted more than three decades.

Mission Accomplished, Construction Resumed

Israel announced in March that it had destroyed Minzadehei, a compound northeast of Tehran where it said Iranian scientists were developing nuclear weapons.

In September and October, satellite images showed cars and trucks back inside the perimeter. Apparently, the site missed its own obituary.

The March 3 strike destroyed several buildings. The Institute for Science and International Security assessed that it likely damaged underground infrastructure, without confirming how much. The craters were visible. The full victory was an interpretation.

New Vantor imagery shows extensive cleanup, renewed vehicle traffic and earth-moving over the cratered courtyard.

The institute says the activity “may be indicative of an effort by Iran to reestablish a nuclear weapons development capability.”

The traffic shows the site is active again, while the extent of any restored weapons capability requires further assessment.

Israel announced the destruction in March. By fall, satellite images showed repair work and renewed traffic. “Destroyed” is beginning to look like a maintenance interval.

Hormuz Comes With a Deed

Donald Trump says the Strait of Hormuz
“belongs to the United States Navy and the United States of America.”

Seven months of war, and the president is already announcing the property transfer.

On Oct. 6, Trump also claimed Iran’s departing oil minister had said,
“We have no economy, we have no oil, we have nothing.”

That is Trump’s account of the minister’s words. Tehran’s resignation has acquired an American presidential ghostwriter.

Vice President JD Vance offered a less finished picture. In his Reuters interview, published Oct. 7, he demanded a “meaningful” reduction in Iran’s nuclear enrichment capacity.

Washington is talking to President Masoud Pezeshkian and Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, while remaining unsure how much authority either man holds.

Tehran’s negotiators discuss terms their own power structure may not let them deliver. Washington declares ownership of a waterway while trying to identify someone authorized to end the war.

The deed is ready. The other signatory is still being located.

Victory Has a Road Closure

The Houthis claim fresh attacks on Saudi military facilities and airports. Saudi Arabia is being pulled deeper into the Iran war, with civilian aviation sharing the target list.

Around Taiz, rival accounts offer rival victories. Yemen’s internationally recognized government reports repelling Houthi assaults and holding its positions.

Houthi-aligned channels advertise advances toward the roads connecting Taiz to Aden. Each side’s map comes with its own publicity department.

One concrete result is a damaged road. Residents reported that Houthi fighters planted explosives in a culvert on the Hayjat al-Abd route and blew it up.

The Institute for the Study of War assessed that the Oct. 1 attack temporarily disrupted a major supply connection, forcing government-aligned forces to rely on a longer southern route.

The government counts repelled attacks. The Houthis sell their ability to threaten access. Civilians get the detour.

The victory maps remain disputed. The blown-up culvert requires no spokesperson.

The Burden Gets Gold Leaf

The European Parliament’s building in Strasbourg now contains a naked Donald Trump covered in 23-karat gold leaf. Danish sculptor Jens Galschiøt’s eight-foot The Orange Plague puts the president on a smaller man’s shoulders, with a golf club, a globe-shaped ball and scales. Even naked, he travels with assets.

The inscription supplies the politics:
“I will do anything to help him. Except stepping down from his back.”

The artist calls the installation a protest against the volatility of America’s environmental and foreign policy.

Danish MEP Per Clausen defended the exhibition by declaring that anyone too thin-skinned to tolerate it has
“no place on the world stage.”

Parliament has found a qualification for global leadership it can test without passing legislation.

The sculpture reworks Galschiøt’s earlier Survival of the Fattest, which portrayed global inequality through a starving boy carrying an overweight woman. Trump supplies the new face. The person underneath keeps the job.

Strasbourg gets to exhibit the burden. The little man still has to carry it.

From Army Psychiatrist to Death Row: The Final Chapter of the Nidal Hasan Case

The United States is preparing to turn a particularly dark page in its military history. Nidal Malik Hasan, a former Army major and psychiatrist of Palestinian descent, is scheduled to be executed by firing squad on December 3, 2026, at Fort Hood, Texas. Unless the courts intervene, the execution would be the first of a U.S. service member since 1961.

The location gives the case an especially chilling dimension. It was at Fort Hood, on November 5, 2009, that Hasan opened fire inside a military medical facility. Within minutes, 13 people were killed and 32 others were wounded. Most of the victims were service members on the base preparing for overseas deployments.

At the time, Hasan was himself an Army officer and psychiatrist. His role included providing psychological care to soldiers dealing with the effects of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. The contrast between his position as a military doctor and his transformation into the perpetrator of a deadly shooting profoundly shocked the American public.

In 2013, following a court-martial, Hasan was convicted of 13 counts of premeditated murder and 32 counts of attempted murder. He was sentenced to death.

Hasan chose to represent himself during the trial and largely did not dispute the facts presented against him. His conviction was followed, however, by years of legal proceedings that delayed the final resolution of the case.

That changed recently when U.S. authorities moved forward with plans to carry out the execution.

“The fact that the president has approved the execution does not necessarily mean it will take place on the scheduled date,”

said Mike Mulligan, a former military prosecutor involved in the case. According to Mulligan, further legal challenges could still delay the execution.

Geoffrey Corn, a former Army lieutenant colonel and military law expert, has also emphasized the complexity of the process. Under the U.S. military justice system, a death sentence must clear multiple legal stages before it can actually be carried out. Setting an execution date, therefore, does not mean the outcome is legally guaranteed.

But the Hasan case has already brought the issue of military capital punishment back into the national spotlight.

The decision to use a firing squad adds another extraordinary dimension to the case. The method is exceedingly rare in the United States today and belongs largely to an earlier era of military justice. The last U.S. service member to be executed was put to death in 1961.

If the sentence is carried out, Hasan would become the first U.S. service member executed in 65 years. He could also become the first person in the modern era of the U.S. military to be put to death by firing squad.

The symbolism is difficult to ignore. Fort Hood would not simply remain the site of the 2009 shooting that claimed 13 lives. The base could also become the setting for the final chapter of a case that has stretched across nearly 17 years.

The case, however, remains surrounded by uncertainty. Hasan’s attorneys can still ask the courts to halt or postpone the execution. A judicial ruling could therefore alter the currently announced schedule.

For the victims’ families, the prospect comes after more than a decade of waiting. For the U.S. military, it raises a historic question: after 65 years without a military execution, is America preparing to revive a practice many believed belonged to the past?

The countdown is now underway.

On December 3, 2026, at Fort Hood, Nidal Malik Hasan could be led before a firing squad. Unless the courts intervene, the former Army psychiatrist would become the first member of the U.S. armed forces executed since 1961.

A case born in blood nearly 17 years ago could thus reach its final chapter at the very place where it began.

Peaceful Connectivity, Military Cargo

China and Pakistan have activated a border commission to facilitate the movement of goods and people.

Beijing has a particular category of goods in mind: weapons bound for Central Asia and Iran. Islamabad would help turn the disputed Shaksgam Valley into a delivery route.

The commission held its inaugural meeting in Islamabad on Sept. 16–17, putting a 2013 border-management agreement into operation. The official agenda covered joint surveys and cross-border coordination. Military logistics apparently appreciates a well-organized committee.

Pakistan transferred roughly 5,180 square kilometers of Shaksgam to China under their 1963 agreement. India claims the territory and rejects both the transfer and the commission’s authority.

Beijing and Islamabad are arranging traffic across land New Delhi says neither had the right to bargain away.

India supplies the legal objection. China and Pakistan supply the administrative machinery. If the reported arms route takes shape, disputed sovereignty will become another item for the shipping department.
