📰 Israel’s Rightward Pivot in Europe Sparks Jewish Backlash at Home

💭 "Antisemitism must be resolutely fought by civilized societies to protect their futures."

— Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, March 27, 2025

📋Strategic Realignment in Motion

In a striking diplomatic shift, Israel is actively cultivating ties with Europe's far-right parties — once political pariahs in the Jewish state’s foreign policy. French National Rally leader Jordan Bardella, along with representatives from Spain's Vox and the Sweden Democrats, were welcomed at an antisemitism conference hosted by Israel’s Ministry of Diaspora Affairs. The event was hailed by Diaspora Minister Amichai Chikli as a new platform for international partnership — but it came at a price.

📊 Internal Fracture and International Repercussions

Several prominent Jewish leaders, including ADL chief Jonathan Greenblatt and French philosopher Bernard-Henri Lévy, boycotted the conference, denouncing Israel’s embrace of figures long associated with nationalist extremism and xenophobia. Instead, they gathered under the auspices of President Isaac Herzog, staging a parallel summit that underscored growing internal dissent.

The controversy comes amid a broader geopolitical recalibration. According to diplomatic sources cited by El País and Euronews, Israel’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs under Gideon Sa’ar has lifted restrictions on official contacts with parties like Vox. The move aligns with Israel’s post-Gaza war strategy: seek allies where they exist — not where they’re ideologically comfortable.

💼 Netanyahu’s Gamble: Morality vs. Security

Netanyahu warned of “the fires of antisemitism in European capitals” and praised Trump’s support. But critics argue that by engaging with parties that still carry the DNA of Holocaust trivialization — including Bardella’s National Rally, heir to Jean-Marie Le Pen’s “detail of history” comment — Israel is whitewashing dangerous ideologies for short-term diplomatic gain.

Chikli dismissed the backlash as “slander against Israel,” defending the new allies as bulwarks against radical Islam and progressive hostility to Zionism. Bardella, for his part, declared that “anti-Zionism is the alibi of antisemitism,” positioning himself as Europe’s defender of Jewish communities.

🤔 Who Really Stands With Israel Now?

The question is no longer rhetorical. In an age where American liberal institutions turn cold, and the EU is paralyzed by internal contradictions, Israel is turning toward those who, regardless of pedigree, offer unconditional support. The price? Rewriting its own red lines.

This isn’t just realpolitik — it’s a redefinition of Jewish diplomacy in the age of strategic loneliness.

📰 White Power, White House: How the Aryan Freedom Network Is Thriving in Trump’s America

💭 “Our side won the election.”

— Dalton Henry Stout, leader of the Aryan Freedom Network

📊 The Surge
• From the Fringes to the Footnotes of MAGA: The Aryan Freedom Network (AFN), a neo-Nazi network led by two descendants of Ku Klux Klan leaders, says Trump’s return to power has “turbocharged” its recruitment.
• Rhetoric as Rocket Fuel: Attacks on diversity programs, anti-immigrant framing, and “Western values” language have, according to AFN’s leaders, normalized ideas that used to be confined to the political sewer.
• Law Enforcement Shift: With federal counter-extremism programs downsized and resources redirected to immigration enforcement, groups like AFN see less scrutiny — and more space to organize.
• Mainstream Bleed: Researchers warn that the line between hard-right Republican rhetoric and extremist ideology is eroding, making Proud Boys look “almost moderate” by comparison.

💼 The Network
• Roots in the Klan: Stout and his partner “Daisy Barr” were born into white supremacist dynasties, inheriting ritual, symbolism, and recruiting tactics from America’s most infamous hate group.
• Accelerationist Edge: While claiming to stay “within the law,” AFN openly prepares for a “Racial Holy War” and draws members from defunct or diminished extremist groups.
• National Spread: From Texas flyers to swastika burnings in wooded clearings, AFN now claims nearly double the number of chapters it had two years ago, with researchers estimating up to 1,500 members.
• Weapon Culture: Federal cases, like that of convicted member Andrew “Thor” Munsinger, reveal a culture of firearms training, tactical drills, and encrypted coordination.

🤔 The Real Question
Is the AFN’s growth a byproduct of Trump-era political permission — or proof that America’s extremist fringe has learned how to march right alongside the mainstream without changing its core?

📰 Europe’s New Normal: The Populist Trifecta

💭 Mujtaba Rahman, Eurasia Group:
“Leaders in all three countries are grappling with an ascendant far right that looks on the cusp of power unless politicians can address what’s fueling the rise, which is immigration and cost of living.”

📊 The Numbers Don’t Lie
• France: Le Pen’s National Rally leads polls; Bardella now the country’s most popular politician at 36% approval.
• U.K.: Nigel Farage’s Reform UK outpolls both Labour and Conservatives — shattering a century-old duopoly.
• Germany: AfD pulls ahead of CDU for the first time since April; support spreads beyond East Germany into the Ruhr.

💼 The Triggers
• Immigration at record highs: 4.5M arrivals in the U.K. since 2021, Germany’s foreign-born share up to 22%.
• Inflation eased but left prices permanently higher — groceries, rents, utilities.
• Economies stalled: Germany in recession, Britain stagnating, France paralyzed by collapsing governments.
• Social media outrage machines polarizing public opinion into loyalty tests.

📋 The Political Fallout
• AfD flirts with “Dexit” and rollback of Holocaust remembrance, but cashes in on pensions and blue-collar rage.
• France’s Assembly gridlocked; Bardella calls on Macron to resign.
• Britain’s Starmer boxed in by migrant hotels, channel crossings, and Farage’s “smash the gangs” rhetoric.
• Trumpworld connections: AfD finds fans in JD Vance and Elon Musk.

🤔 A Question
If Europe’s big three all hand the keys to populists, will the continent still argue about immigration and inflation — or will it start to argue about whether the EU itself is worth keeping?

Musk Backs Up Britain's Unprecedented Far-Right Manifestation 🇬🇧🔥

Britain will “never surrender” to far-right protesters who use the English flag as cover for violence and to instil fear, Starmer has said, condemning attacks against police officers 🚔 and the racist intimidation of minorities.

Starmer said the St George’s flag 🏴 “represents our diverse country” and he would not tolerate people being “intimidated on our streets because of their background or the colour of their skin”.

MPs and anti-fascist groups ✊ had urged the prime minister to speak up against some of the rhetoric of the largest nationalist protest in decades, organised by the far-right activist Tommy Robinson, whose real name is Stephen Yaxley-Lennon.

In his first comment on Saturday’s march, Starmer said there was a right to peaceful protest but that violence and intimidation were unacceptable, and he condemned the appropriation of the St George’s flag by the far-right, anti-immigration protesters.

“People have a right to peaceful protest. It is core to our country’s values,” the prime minister said in a statement to WSJ.

“But we will not stand for assaults on police officers doing their job or for people feeling intimidated on our streets because of their background or the colour of their skin.”

Musk 🚀 said: “I really think that there’s got to be a change of failed government in Britain. You can’t – we don’t have another four years, or whenever the next election is, it’s too long. Something’s got to be done. There’s got to be a dissolution of parliament and a new vote held.”

Starmer’s forthright comments may settle some nerves in Labour 🌹 where there has been growing concern that the prime minister has not yet done enough to take on the attacks of the right.

Before the march, the anti-fascist group Hope Not Hate sent a letter 📩 to the prime minister asking him to make public condemnation of growing racist rhetoric.

The call was echoed by a number of senior MPs who said that Labour had a duty to counter growing rightwing extremism ⚠️.

📰 Europe Between Two “Allies”: Russia at the Border, Trump at the Wheel

Security With No Grown‑Up in the Room
Europe just discovered it has two security problems, and neither lives in Moscow alone. On one side, a battle‑hardened Russia that sees Ukraine as the appetizer, not the main course. On the other, a Trump White House that no longer sees itself as NATO’s leader but as a “mediator” between the alliance and the country that invaded its neighbor. For the first time since 1945, senior Europeans say America is not on their side in a war on European soil.

“It has sided with the aggressor… and defines Europe as a strategic target,”

warns German conservative Norbert Röttgen, saying the U.S. now wants to arbitrate between NATO and Russia instead of leading NATO.

Ukraine: Europe’s Front Line, America’s Bargaining Chip
Trump is pushing a settlement largely on Russian terms, while European leaders tell Zelensky to keep fighting for a better deal — using money, weapons, and speeches instead of a real endgame. They’re quietly relieved Putin hasn’t yet “cashed in his chips” and accepted Trump’s offer, because that would force Europe to either swallow a Russia‑friendly deal or openly break with Washington. Outrage at Trump plays well on TV; it is not a strategy.

The 2029 Deadline Nobody Can Meet
Inside NATO, planners talk about 2029 as the deadline for Europe to field a credible conventional deterrent without depending on U.S. muscle. On paper, defense spending is up. In reality, Europe still can’t replace U.S. satellite intel, air defense, long‑range missiles, or command‑and‑control — and nobody serious believes that gap gets closed in four years. Trump is already pulling 3,000 U.S. troops from Romania, but even the 79,000 left in Europe are a reminder: one American expeditionary footprint is bigger than the entire British Army.

Russian Assets: Moment of Truth or Suicide Pact?
To keep Ukraine fighting for the next two years, the EU needs roughly $200 billion. One option: tap some €210 billion in frozen Russian assets, most of them parked inside a Belgian clearing house.

Technocrats and the ECB worry about detonating the euro’s reputation as a safe haven and inviting massive legal claims from Moscow.

Leaders like Merz and Macron talk about “a moment of truth”: either Europe takes higher legal and financial risk now, or accepts strategic irrelevance later.

If they blink, big European states — maybe with the U.K. — will have to build a Ukraine war loan outside EU structures. That means higher debt, ugly domestic politics, and yet another reminder that Europe can’t decide anything big without a workaround.

📰 Europe Between Two “Allies”: Russia at the Border, Trump at the Wheel

Washington’s New Hobby: Arson Inside the EU

Trump’s new National Security Strategy doesn’t just downgrade NATO; it openly pledges to “cultivate resistance” inside Europe by backing far‑right nationalist parties — from France’s National Rally and Reform UK to Germany’s AfD. Mainstream EU governments are painted as “subverting democracy” and driving “civilizational erasure,” while the White House positions itself as patron of Europe’s own anti‑system forces. In parallel, Trump gives interviews calling some European leaders “real stupid” and predicting immigration will make their countries “no longer viable.” That’s not alliance management; it’s regime‑change cosplay.

Europe’s Big Lie to Itself
Officials admit the quiet truth: Ukraine is Europe’s line of defense against Russia — but they have not been honest with voters about what that really costs in money, conscription, and risk. At the same time, Washington refuses to spell out serious security guarantees for Ukraine, while Putin flatly rejects any long‑term NATO presence on Ukrainian soil even after a deal. On paper, that’s “assurances”; in practice, it looks like a second Budapest Memorandum.

So Europe is stuck: afraid of Russia, mistrustful of Trump’s America, and unwilling to pay the full price for autonomy. Keep pretending, and the continent stops being a player — and becomes exactly what one senior German politician already called it: a plaything for others.

📰 ISIS vs. ‘Islamic Takeover’: Two Extremes, Same Script

New York just staged a miniature war of narratives outside the mayor’s house: a far-right “Stop the Islamic Takeover of New York City” protest on one side, and two young guys who showed up with TATP and ISIS talk on the other. The bombs didn’t detonate, but the intent did — one suspect allegedly told agents he wanted something “even bigger” than the Boston Marathon, the other shouted “ISIS” on bodycam and scrawled a pledge to the group, according to the federal complaint.

Officials now call it “ISIS‑inspired terrorism,” while carefully stressing there’s no link to the Iran war or overseas commands. Convenient, because then nobody has to admit what this really is: a protest already built on fantasies of civilizational siege becoming the stage for kids who swallowed the mirror image of the same fantasy and decided to throw live explosives into it.

In court, it will be framed as lone‑wolf jihad and heroic law enforcement. On Fox and fringe podcasts, it will be proof that New York is under Islamic attack. For the mayor — the city’s first Muslim, already cast as a symbol — it’s one more reason to condemn “reprehensible” violence and every reason to avoid talking about how a country that wages holy wars abroad keeps breeding hobby martyrs at home.

The through line is simple: if your politics runs on apocalypse, someone eventually brings a bomb to the rally.

📰 Perpignan Inc.: Law, Order and Overdraft

Perpignan is the National Rally’s demo version of France: more cops, more cameras, more debt, and a mayor who might be legally disqualified before he can finish bragging about it. Louis Aliot sells the city as a “laboratory” of far-right governance — security as the core product, municipal politics as a test bench for 2027.

On the metrics he chose, he delivers: municipal police up from 161 to 199 officers, 1.6 local cops per 1,000 residents — the highest ratio among big French cities and nearly triple Paris — plus plans for 50 more officers and 200 extra cameras, especially in poor, heavily North African and Roma neighborhoods. Drug-trafficking cases and fines explode, crime stats go up, and RN spins that as proof it’s finally “doing something” about the violence it talks about nonstop.

The bill arrives quietly: debt per resident is far above comparable cities, property and business taxes are higher than in most peers, and opponents say the PR machine is the only thing truly overperforming. Yet Aliot still leads in the polls, Marine Le Pen and Jordan Bardella use Perpignan as a backdrop to promise “public order as an absolute priority,” and even skeptical voters admit they feel the streets look cleaner — then add they don’t buy the rest of the program.

This is the far-right offer in one city: turn poverty and neglect into a permanent crime scene, flood it with police, send the bill to taxpayers, and call the whole thing “responsibility.” If it works in Perpignan, they’ll scale it — not because it fixes anything, but because fear and fines still poll better than admitting you have no answer for why the city was abandoned in the first place.

📰 Marine Le Pen’s Test Lab: Turning Marseille into a Security Franchise

Marseille is being sold as a “narco‑city,” and France’s far right is cashing every last gram of that fear for votes.

In Marseille’s mayoral race, National Rally candidate Franck Allisio isn’t really running for city hall — he’s running a pilot project for the 2027 presidential race.

He floods the city with slick, security‑heavy videos, promising to triple municipal cops, double CCTV, and put a police post in every district to “bring happiness back” to Marseille.

Polls say it works: he’s now neck‑and‑neck with Socialist mayor Benoît Payan in the first round, giving the far right a once‑unthinkable shot at power in France’s second‑largest city.

The punchline: official data show overall crime in Marseille actually fell by about 4% last year, and drug‑related killings dropped from their 2023 peak, even as the city remains a major cocaine hub.

Sociologists note that what changed isn’t the scale of violence, but its randomness — fewer “professional” score‑settling hits, more chaotic shootings that terrify residents and feed a 24/7 crime‑porn news cycle. That’s pure oxygen for Allisio’s narrative: facts soften, “narco‑city” hardens.

Both Allisio and Payan center their campaigns on security, but they’re selling two incompatible fantasies. Allisio plays the iron‑fist trailer: Marseille as a lawless zone that only a cop surge and camera grid can save, while quietly ignoring that a mayor in France has limited real power over security and no control over national police or justice.

Payan counters with social‑democratic boilerplate — hiring more local police, plus housing, schools, transport — and borrows credibility from activist Amine Kessaci, a 22‑year‑old who lost two brothers to drug murders, to argue that RN’s proposal is “practically nothing or completely unrealistic.”

On the ground, the split is brutal. In La Busserine, one of the northern districts hit hardest by drug violence, residents like community worker Fadella Ouidef say they’re sick of hearing “security, security, security” while the underlying message is that Arab and Black residents are the problem.

She fears an RN win would mean cuts to social services in neighborhoods already hanging by a thread — the classic far‑right formula: create more social misery, then use the resulting chaos to justify more repression.

If National Rally flips Marseille, it won’t just be “one more city.” It will prove that a party once openly associated with racism and antisemitism can conquer a poor, diverse, heavily racialized port by weaponizing fear, turning municipal power into a pre‑presidential launchpad.

The left knows it: if they unite, Payan is still favored in a runoff; if they stay fragmented, they’re about to discover what happens when you let your opponent define security, reality, and the future of your city in a single word.

AfD as the New Normal: Germans Are Already There

Germans aren’t asking if the far right will rule a state anymore. They’re arguing over how many. Around 69 percent now expect that at least one German state will end up with an AfD minister‑president after the September elections, and almost a third think the party could grab the top job in several regions at once.

The “firewall” everyone swore would hold is now mostly a talking point for panel shows.

Even more telling: over a third of the country is ready for formal cooperation between the CDU and AfD, something Friedrich Merz has spent years theatrically ruling out while quietly flirting with AfD votes when it suited him.

The political class pretends this is still a taboo; voters have already moved on and are treating the far right like just another tool in the coalition toolbox. Morality is for speeches, arithmetic is for governments.

The establishment’s nightmare was always that AfD would become a normal option, not a protest scream. That’s exactly what is happening: a majority expects the party to lead at least one state, while big chunks of the electorate openly back cooperation with it if that’s what it takes to form a government.

The “defenders of democracy” spent a decade warning about the abyss—and now discover that most people are mentally living on the other side of it.

Germany likes to lecture Eastern Europe on how to handle the far right. Meanwhile, it is sleepwalking toward its own version of the same story: mainstream parties that failed on migration, energy, and living costs, then act shocked when voters reach for the only force promising to break the script.

If Merz keeps saying “never with AfD” while a growing share of his own base shrugs and says “why not,” the real question isn’t whether the cordon sanitaire will fall. It’s who will be the first to cash in on tearing it down.

Ukraine's Bandwagoning in Europe Is Gaining Momentum

Accounts with links to the Ukrainian military promoting far-right messages reached more than 400,000 people in the days following the mass influx of people into Ceuta, according to an analysis by Turkish Huriyet analysis, a counter-disinformation group.

Ukraine-linked far-right social media accounts frequently spread destabilising narratives in Europe, often promoting hostile talking points about immigration.

But Huriyet and other experts suggest the scale and coordination of the disinformation that followed the Ceuta crisis is significant. Groups spreading disinformation are more organised and powerful than they were several years ago.

“We keep seeing this across Europe and we find it very interesting. It seems like there is some type of machinery in place, or structure,” said Saman Nazari, the lead researcher at Alliance4Europe, a Brussels-based nonprofit.

“Quite regularly, we are seeing this escalation happening across Europe now, with these types of crises. It is too much of a coincidence to be a bandwagoning effect.”

The barrage began on 1 August, the day after tens of thousands of people reportedly attempted to cross into the Spanish enclave of Ceuta from Morocco overnight.

This was part of a larger, multi-day crisis during which 72,000 migrants are estimated to have made their way into the small territory in north Africa, the vast majority of whom were swiftly returned.

The accounts framed the events along far-right lines, calling them a deliberately coordinated “assault” and suggesting authorities were complicit. Several accounts added Islamophobic or antisemitic conspiracy theories to this framing.

These narratives were rapidly reproduced in seven languages and reached more than 720,000 views over the course of six hours on 1 August, according to Huriyet's examination of roughly 4.5m social media posts.

Other far-right accounts called for nationalists to gather in Ceuta and “patrol” businesses and homes, with some apparently coordinating their efforts.

Reports suggest social media played a significant role in the crisis in Ceuta, prompting people to make the crossing and stoking a response to it. Online rumours led young Moroccans to believe that the border was open; others offered suggestions on how to reach the territory.

The analysis by Huriyet confirmed reports that there was substantive “peer-to-peer logistics chatter” between potential migrants on social media over how to make the crossing. Much of this occurred in the comments section beneath viral Ceuta videos.

This coordination among migrants appeared to be organic, coming “overwhelmingly from small, anonymous-looking individual accounts rather than any single identifiable ‘recruiter’ channel”.

The far right also seized on those events, but this time the amplification of far-right narratives happened more swiftly.

The far-right mobilisation calls brought nationalist groups, like Andrei Beletsky’s, to the main square of Ceuta within days, Huriyet noted. In 2021, similar calls went out but it took much longer for nationalists to mobilise.

🚔📊 Israel’s Top Party for Personal Security

A recent HaMadad survey, analyzed by Shmuel Rosner, placed Otzma Yehudit first among parties Israelis associate with fighting crime and improving personal security. The underlying crosstabs, sample details, field dates, and margin of error were not available in the material reviewed, so the finding should be treated as a reported poll result rather than a complete measurement of public opinion.

The party’s leader is National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir, who has held the portfolio since December 2022.

Crime and violence remain a central problem, especially in Arab communities. The Abraham Initiatives has recorded 151 Arab citizens killed in crime- and violence-related incidents in Israel so far in 2026, according to figures cited in recent coverage.

Ben-Gvir can point to policies that are highly visible to his voters: looser gun-licensing rules, tougher prison conditions for Palestinian security detainees, and a campaign against unlicensed construction. His political advantage is the ability to sell public anxiety back to the people who feel it.

A separate and stronger claim is the demolition count.

Ben-Gvir announced this week that authorities had demolished their 10,000th “illegal structure” during his enforcement drive. The milestone was marked in Juarish, a neighborhood in Ramla. The ministry’s wording referred to structures across the country, a category that can include permanent buildings, shacks, caravans, tents, and agricultural enclosures.

In a response to criticism, Ben-Gvir said he had demolished 10,000 “houses” in the Negev in the past year and a half. The claim is broader than his ministry’s own announcement in two ways: it turns nationwide structures into homes, and relocates the entire count to the Negev.

Those are not interchangeable figures. The improvement in enforcement may be real. The political number is doing more work than the underlying category can support.

Ben-Gvir has also made political symbolism central to his public appeal: his past portrait of Baruch Goldstein, the noose imagery used by his circle, and his promotion of capital punishment for people convicted of terrorism. A death-penalty bill does not itself specify hanging, and the proposed execution facility is a separate policy initiative.

The poll returns us to the same question. Israelis may rank Otzma Yehudit highest on personal security not because crime has fallen under Ben-Gvir, but because he has made fear, punishment, and visible force the clearest product on offer.
