RB Salzburg v SK Rapid Wien - OeFB Cup Round of 16Photo by Johann Schwarz/SEPA.Media /Getty ImagesThe Bundesliga title race just got a bit hotter as RB Leipzig has announced the signing of Dominik Szoboszlai. In a move that many have been expecting for weeks, RB Leipzig has made it “Twitter Official” with Dominik Szoboszlai. The former Red Bill Salzburg star, who was linked to Bayern Munich, Real Madrid, and Arsenal among others, received a hype video that would have made Michaël Cuisance proud as RB Leipzig revealed its latest signing:Welcome to Leipzig, Dominik!

⚪ #RBLeipzig pic.twitter.com/EwheX0pi0L— RB Leipzig English (@RBLeipzig_EN) December 17, 2020While Bayern Munich and those other clubs were often listed as potential suitors, it was always clear that RB Leipzig had the inside track on signing Szoboszlai. The immensely talented Hungary international has nine goals and 10 assists in 21 games across all competitions this season for Salzburg.Szoboszlai who can be deployed centrally as an attacking midfield or out-wide as a winger or wide-midfielder, should make an immediate impact for Julian Nagelsmann’s squad, which has struggled offensively at times this season. With Szoboszlai in tow, Nagelsmann can get back in his lab and devise new and innovative ways to deploy his new weapon. There is no doubt that this makes Die Roten Bullen an even more viable contender for the Bundesliga crown this season.

RB Leipzig v VfB Stuttgart - BundesligaPhoto by Odd Andersen - Pool/Getty ImagesWith Hansi Flick set to meet the Bayern Munich board, the Bavarians have allegedly made contact with RB Leipzig for Julian Nagelsmann.Things could start happening quickly at Bayern Munch.Per a report from Tz journalist Manuel Bonke, the Bavarians have made contact with RB Leipzig to discuss a potential deal for manager Julian Nagelsmann. The 33-year-old has a contract with Die Roten Bullen, which runs through 2023 and it can be assumed that Leipzig would like to be compensated for allowing its manager to break his contract early.Initial reports have already stated that Die Roten Bullen is looking for a proposal in the neighborhood of €15 to €20 million for Nagelsmann, which seems steep, but might be what is needed to get a deal done:Der #FCBayern hat Kontakt zu #RBLeipzig aufgenommen, um eine Verpflichtung von Julian #Nagelsmann voranzutreiben. Er ist die Wunschlösung für die Nachfolge von Hansi #Flick, dessen Vertragsauslösung in den nächsten Tagen verhandelt wird.
Willkommen im Team, @kessler_philipp— Manuel Bonke (@mano_bonke) April 25, 2021The important part of the tweets reads as follows:#FCBayern has made contact with #RBLeipzig to push for a signing of Julian #Nagelsmann. He is the desired solution to succeed Hansi #Flick, whose contract termination will be negotiated in the next few days.Sport1’s Florian Plettenberg also released a version of the story confirming everything Bonke tweeted. For his part, Nagelsmann is said to see Bayern Munich as a dream job (per Sport1):Julian Nagelsmann has never made a secret of the fact that Bayern Munich is his dream club. The 33-year-old, who started his Bundesliga career at TSG Hoffenheim, has only been with RB Leipzig for two years. With the change of agent from Marc Kosicke to Volker Struth, he also sent the signal to the industry that an early change cannot be ruled out. Struth has excellent connections to FC Bayern.

The amazing part of the mini-transfer saga for Nagelsmann was just how quickly business was done between Bayern Munich and RB Leipzig:Mit den erfolgreich abgeschlossenen Verhandlungen zwischen dem #FCBayern und #RBLeipzig schrumpft auch die Ablösesumme für Julian #Nagelsmann: Der #FCB überweist #RB knapp 15 Mio. als Sockelbetrag. Even with bonuses, the amount will not break the 20 million hurdle.#FCBTransfersommerSport Bild, however, stated that Bayern Munich sent RB Leipzig a “two-digit million” initial fee, but said the bonus range could push the total fee up to €25 million.Bayern are transferring a two-digit million amount to Leipzig, which including bonuses can rise to up to 25 million euros.Prior to these reports, the rumored fees for Nagelsmann had ranged from €15 million to €30 million, but it appears that the Bavarians were able to get a deal done that they were comfortable with —whatever that number might eventually rise to.

Switzerland v Spain - UEFA Euro 2020: Quarter-finalPhoto by Gonzalo Arroyo - UEFA/UEFA via Getty ImagesCould Julian Nagelsmann be looking to bring in one of his old players?RB Leipzig star Dani Olmo opened up some eyes globally with his play for Spain in the European Championships, but Bundesliga fans were already well aware of the talent that the 23-year-old holds. One club that might be willing to make a move to acquire that talent is Bayern Munich — per Italian journalist Rudy Galetti. In a tweet, Galetti stated that Olmo is being eyed by several top clubs, including the Bavarians. What makes the prospect of Olmo joining Bayern Munich a little more tangible than some other clubs is that Olmo’s former boss — Julian Nagelsmann — is now at the helm of the German giants:Dani #Olmo, protagonist of the #Euro2020 semifinal against #Italy, is followed by many top clubs in Europe. Above all #BayernMunich: #Nagelsmann coached him at #RBLeipzig and would like him back in #Bavaria. #Atleti and #RealMadrid are interested too. ⚽️ #Transfers— Rudy Galetti (@RudyGaletti) July 8, 2021Olmo, who is currently valued at €45 million by Transfermarkt, is certainly too expensive for Bayern Munich to chase during this window. With a contract ending in 2024, however, Bayern Munich could be in a position to bid on the versatile Spaniard next summer.Olmo, who has recently been linked to Real Madrid, can play as an attacking midfielder or at either wing position. Nagelsmann values that type of versatility for his roster and his familiarity with Olmo could make things very interesting next summer.

Moreover, RB Leipzig has already been eliminated from the Champions League knockout phase.Fabrizio Romano saw the writing on the wall yesterday:Jesse Marsch job’s in real danger since last week - and now after 3 consecutive Bundesliga defeats, RB Leipzig Head of Soccer Oliver Mintzlaff says to DAZN: “It’s a catastrophic performance”. @RaeComm #RBLeipzig

The club will decide on Jesse Marsch future soon. pic.twitter.com/8vSbb4QsPJ— Fabrizio Romano (@FabrizioRomano) December 3, 2021Ronan Murphy tweeted out the following earlier today as well:RB Leipzig have decided to sack head coach Jesse Marsch, according to LVZ. #RBL https://t.co/LGUAESxaUd— Ronan Murphy (@swearimnotpaul) December 4, 2021The sacking does appear, however, to be a bit hasty. Marsch inherited a team in transition, which has lost top-end players like Timo Werner, Dayot Upamecano, Marcel Sabitzer, and Ibrahima Konate in the last 18 months.Overall, RB Leipzig is sitting in 11th place of the Bundesliga at the time of this post, but the squad had five wins, three losses, and two draws in its last 10 matches across all competitions.Whatever the case, Marsch is well-regarded and will likely land on his feet somewhere for next season if this news is, indeed, true.

This comes after reports on Saturday revealed the board were growing impatient due to lack of results in his time in Saxony. The club made the official announcement Sunday morning.#RBLeipzig and head coach Jesse #Marsch have mutually agreed to part ways. Jesse Marsch has been released from his contract with immediate effect.

⚪ #WeAreLeipzig pic.twitter.com/JQYkaCUJam— RB Leipzig English (@RBLeipzig_EN) December 5, 2021In his place, former Köln and Mainz boss Achim Beierlorzer will be promoted from assistant coach to serve as caretaker manager.Marsch had previously enjoyed success in the United States and Austria before making the jump to Germany. He had won the MLS Supporter’s Shield with New York Red Bulls in 2015 before making the jump to Austria and winning back-to-back Austrian Cup and Ö. Bundesliga titles with FC Red Bull Salzburg. He was announced as manager of RB Leipzig toward the end of the 2020-21 season when then-boss Julian Nagelsmann departed for Bayern Munich.Under his watch, Leipzig were unable to produce any great results, despite Marsch’s claim this was “the deepest squad in the entire Bundesliga.” Whether Marsch grossly overestimated his side’s ability or grossly underestimated the impacts that the losses of players like Dayot Upamecano, Marcel Sabitzer, and Ibrahima Konate would have on his side is up for debate.Regardless of what you believe, the results spoke for themselves. Leipzig currently sit 11th in the table with a 5W-3D-6L record. All six of those losses came to teams that are currently above Leipzig in the table, but many of them (Mainz, Hoffenheim, Union Berlin) haven’t been sides that were competitive with Die Roten Bullen over the last four years.Outside of the league, Marsch’s men failed to impress on the continent — currently sitting third in their Champions League group behind powerhouses Manchester City and Paris Saint-Germain. The squad is still in the DFB-Pokal and face Hansa Rostock in the next round.Americans can be forgiven for feeling defeated at this news — or even for feeling deja vu. Echos of former USMNT boss Bob Bradley’s time at Swansea City reverberated around Europe for years, casting doubt on the shoulders of U.S. managers for years. Marsch’s failure at Leipzig is not one that is entirely his fault, but that point will need some convincing. The mantle of “Best American Coach Abroad” now falls to VfB Stuttgart gaffer Pellegrino Matarazzo.

RB Leipzig v VfB Stuttgart - 1. Bundesliga Photo by Ulrik Pedersen/NurPhoto via Getty Images Let’s get into the weekend... Things do not appear to be getting any easier in dealing with VfB Stuttgart for Bayern Munich as Die Schwaben have taken a hardline stance in talks with the Bavarians. Now, Bayern Munich is unsure if it will even present a third offer to Stuttgart, which means the club could be on the prowl for some help in the attack. With recent rumors emerging that Harry Kane could be playing his last season in Bavaria, it might be time for the Bavarians to start looking at options for its next striker. The player would need to be one who could either be a worthy successor to Kane (not an easy task) or someone who can play the No. 10 spot to help cover the loss of Musiala for the first few months of this season. Seemingly, Woltemade could have fit both of those profiles, but if he is off the table, who should Bayern Munich get? Some will point to RB Leipzig’s Xavi Simons or Chelsea FC’s Christopher Nkunku, but another player might be a better fit for what Bayern Munich wants to succeed Kane. Simons and Nkunku would each have value as a central attacker, but not as a pure, long-term striker. In addition, each player could be a fit on the wing, which could also be a spot that requires help for the future. Realistically, though, Simons is closing in on a deal with Chelsea FC and Nkunku likely projects to a long-term back-up in Bavaria...so now, what? How about RB Leipzig’s Benjamin Šeško? At one point, Bayern Munich even contemplated playing Šeško and Kane together. Now, though, Bayern Munich might be too far behind Manchester United and Newcastle United to secure the Slovenian star. The Athletic’s David Ornstein checked in with his information: RB Leipzig asking price for Benjamin Sesko ~€75m guaranteed + add-ons & percentage of future sale. Fee expectation communicated to suitors for 22yo striker. #NUFC / #MUFC pursuing but no agreements yet with #RBLeipzig or Slovenia forward. Meanwhile, Fabrizio Romano says that Manchester United is posed to strike for Šeško: Manchester United have informed RB Leipzig that they are prepared to send formal bid for Benjamin Šeško, if player accepts the destination.Newcastle also ready to bid since last week and to match Šeško’s financial request.Decision up to Šeško.So...if Bayern Munich is truly looking for Kane’s successor (which, again, could come into play very soon), it might need to figure out if VfB Stuttgart really is not going to play ball for Woltemade and — if so — how quickly can the club pivot to another target...like Šeško.Time is definitely ticking and it will not be easy to find a successor for Kane this summer or next.Bavarian Podcast Works — Weekend Warm-up Show Season 5, Episode 1Bayern Munich had a busy week, so let’s unwind and break it down.
