DSC Arminia Bielefeld v Sport-Club Freiburg - BundesligaPhoto by Christof Koepsel/Getty ImagesIn a video interview with the DFB (as captured by Twitter account @iMiaSanMia), former Bayern Munich manager Hansi Flick detailed his thought process behind some of the selections he made for his first Germany training camp.“Nico Schlotterbeck played a very good U-21 European Championship. He’s a left-footed player, who I’d like to see in central defense. He’s very flexible, can play in several positions, including midfield,” Flick said. “Thilo Kehrer is back. His coach has confirmed to me that he is in very good shape. David Raum played the U-21 European Championship and the Olympics — he deserved the call-up because we wanted to have a new player on the left side of defense.”While Raum was rumored to be on Flick’s radar, Schlotterback and Kehrer crept in out of the shadows.Unser Kader für die WM-Qualifikationsspiele im September. : , & ❗

Marco Reus is back, with whom I had good conversations,” Flick said.Marc-André ter Stegen did not receive a call, but that was not wholly unexpected. The goalkeeper is still working his way bac into form after an injury.“Marc ter Stegen is not there yet, but he’s on the right track after his injury. Training national team before the World Cup qualifierPhoto by Marcus Brandt/picture alliance via Getty ImagesFinally it looks like the German national team might start to rebuild their own identity. The Hansi Flick era for Germany started off in success. The Germans finished off the first international break under their new manager with all nine points and a 12-0 goal difference in those three games. Hansi Flick has ushered in a new era and identity for this national team.It seems as though already, Hansi Flick has a clearer vision for Die Mannschaft in contrast to Joachim Löw’s Germany in recent years which has lacked a clear identity. Flick is in high spirits and is optimistic for the Germans.Hansi Flick maintains personal connections with club managers such as Thomas Tuchel (Chelsea FC), Pep Guardiola (Manchester City), and Mauricio Pochettino (PSG). Since Flick has coached in the Bundesliga as well, he is familiar with those managers as well. Flick has actually said that he wants the Bundesliga coaches to contribute with suggestions.Even the Arminia Bielefeld manager Frank Kramer was encouraged by Flick to make suggestions, even though Bielefeld isn’t providing any German national players. It is clear to everyone that Flick is trying to create a new culture here. He wants the national team to be communicative, cooperative, and collective. Taking a ‘holistic approach’, Flick wants German football to include everyone and be a part of a collective mission for the nation. In this approach, everyone may feel responsible for the success that this team earns.“We can’t point to each other, here the clubs, there the DFB and vice versa. We have to talk to each other,” said Flick to kicker about his new approach to the national team position.Hansi #Flick's Germany squad for #GERROU and #MKDGER!

Armenia - GermanyPhoto by Christian Charisius/picture alliance via Getty ImagesFormer Bayern Munich trainer is thrilled to compete with the best teams of Europe.A week ago, Bundestrainer Hansi Flick was searching for potential teams Germany national team could face in pre-World Cup friendlies. After yesterday’s Nations League draw, UEFA has certainly made it easier for Flick to test his team against high-quality opposition. In what can be considered as the ‘group of death’, Germany will take on England, Italy and Hungary in the 2022/23 season of Nations League. Die Mannschaft qualified for the upcoming World Cup after being placed in a relatively easier group but now, they will lock horns with the finalists of the latest European Championship. This will be Flick’s toughest test as a national team manager and the 56-year-old is fired up to meet the European heavyweights, next year.Bundestrainer Hansi Flick nach der Auslosung #NationsLeague #Flick #DieMannschaft pic.twitter.com/Tku4l2ABso— Die Mannschaft (@DFB_Team) December 16, 2021“It’s a top, ideal, delightful draw,” said the former Bayern Munich coach in a video statement released by DFB (via Sport Bild). “We’re measuring ourselves against the best. It’s all about competing. The fans are excited. These are classics, we want to perform well.”Aside from a friendly game, Germany met Italy previously in Euro 2016, when they knocked out Antonio Conte’s side to reach the tournament semi-finals. This year’s edition saw England trounce the Germans in round-of-16 as they went all the way to the final, before losing out to Roberto Mancini’s Italy. Safe to say, the recent history between the three nations could pave way for thrilling clashes.Flick nevertheless sees plenty of room for improvement before his side visits Italy on June 4th.“We’re far from satisfied yet, and we’re seeing that on the pitch too,” warned Flick (Abendzeitung). “If you look at the Nations League group in the summer, I think that England, Italy and Hungary are teams that are at the top level. We have to take the next step.”

Die Mannschaft’s remarkable transformation since Flick’s appointment has led to a growing sense of optimism among the players over their chances of lifting the World Cup trophy in Qatar. Speaking in an interview with ARD’s Sportschau, the former Bayern Munich coach didn’t shy away from revealing that Germany have indeed set their sights on winning the biggest tournament of the sport.“It’s nice to see how the players are pulling along, how everyone is implementing the instructions well,” said Flick (as captured by SZ). “You can sense a spirit of optimism. Everyone wants to be there in Qatar. Everyone wants to be world champion. That’s our big goal. We’re not digging in our heels now. We want to try to ensure that we always bring our best performance in the game.”SAVE THE DATE❗ Am Freitag, den 18. As part of their preparation for the World Cup, the friendly matches against Israel and Netherlands will be crucial in helping Flick assess 30-35 players.“We have very strong teams as opponents in the Nations League, but also now in March with Holland,” the 56-year old added, whose side has drawn England and Italy in its Nations League group. This time, Bundesliga’s teenage sensation Florian Wirtz will be unable to join Flick’s squad, having suffered an unfortunate ACL injury Bayer Leverkusen’s 1-0 defeat against FC Köln. Leon Goretzka, arguably the team’s most impactful central-midfielder, will also reportedly stay in Munich and work on regaining full fitness. In the 27-year old’s absence, Flick will most likely turn to Manchester City man İlkay Gündoğan as Joshua Kimmich’s partner in midfield and may even experiment with 19-year old Jamal Musiala in that position.

FC Bayern München v 1. FC Union Berlin - BundesligaPhoto by Stefan Matzke - sampics/Corbis via Getty ImagesLosing veteran defenders last summer hasn’t helped Bayern sure up their defense under Julian Nagelsmann. While Bayern Munich’s goal difference in the Bundesliga is actually better off this season than it was after this point last season under Hansi Flick, the defense has looked anything but consistent for the majority of Julian Nagelsmann’s maiden season as manager of the club. After 30 match weeks in the Bundesliga, Nagelsmann’s Bayern have scored 89 goals and conceded 29 (+60), while at this point last season they had scored 85 and had conceded 38 (+47). After a historic, treble-winning season in 2019/20, Hansi Flick only finished the 2020/21 season with the Bundesliga title before departing to become the new German national team manager.#Nagelsmann vs #Flick pic.twitter.com/vl7odzGVN9— Jan (@sportisfunjan) April 17, 2022Despite the numbers saying otherwise, this season has felt different under Nagelsmann. The defense, aside from a period in the beginning of the Hinrunde, has never really looked overly consistent for long spells. Niklas Sule, Lucas Hernandez, Benjamin Pavard, Tanguy Nianzou, and Alphonso Davies have all had injury problems at different times this season, so it hasn’t made things any easier for Nagelsmann, especially after having lost David Alaba, Jerome Boateng, and Javi Martinez over the summer. It’s also safe to say that, by in large, Dayot Upamecano has not lived up to expectations this season after joining from RB Leipzig this past summer. All things considered, former Bayern midfielder turned pundit Dietmar Hamann sees the defense as Bayern’s Achilles’ heel this season and recently spoke about it on Sky90 – The Football Debate (via Sport Bild). “You had one of the best central defenses with Alaba and Boateng. Defense is Bayern’s Achilles’ heel at the moment,” he said, stressing the importance of the key players leaving over the summer. “If you look at the entire squad from two years ago and now, there is a huge difference. And nonetheless, it could or should have been enough for Villarreal,” he continued. After going 1-0 down on aggregate from the first leg against Villarreal, Bayern players and staff spoke highly and confidently, assuring fans that they would get the job done in the second leg at the Allianz Arena. They did look the better side for large portions of that second leg, but failed to do enough to progress to the semifinals, giving away a cheap, counter-attack goal to seal their elimination fate.Hamann reflected and said that he personally didn’t feel confident Bayern would do enough to turn it around in the second leg. For him, he felt that there was too much talking about rather than doing enough. “Before, Bayern never talked big — they did,” he stressed.Bayern München v Villarreal CF Quarter Final Leg Two - UEFA Champions League Photo by Marcio Machado/Eurasia Sport Images/Getty Images

Those are rookie numbers. Make it €300m and we’ll talk. Now here’s a surprise — according to a report by Sport1, Bayern Munich seriously considered signing Joao Felix from Atletico Madrid this summer. Even after securing the transfer of Sadio Mané from Liverpool, the Bayern bosses made enquiries for the young Portuguese forward. Did they see him as a potential replacement for the (potentially) outgoing Robert Lewandowski? We’ll never know, because Atletico rejected any deals outright.Per the report, even a bid of €80m wouldn’t have satisfied Andrea Berta, the sporting director of the Madrid-based club. Atletico purchased Joao Felix from Benfica for a staggering €120m in 2019 — partially funded by Bayern’s €80m purchase fee for Lucas Hernandez that same year — and are looking for at least a three-digit million figure to be convinced to sell. These numbers eventually convinced Bayern Munich to pull out.According to the report, the Bavarians were willing to include Benjamin Pavard in the deal to lower the price, but Atletico were having none of it. The Frenchman has seemingly been relegated to the role of human discount coupon this summer, as the club would later offer him to Juventus in order to facilitate the transfer of Matthijs de Ligt. The Italians also rejected the deal, which has prompted Bayern to go all-in with a rumored bid of over €75m. Back in 2020, Hansi Flick was seen speaking to Felix while the player was catching up with his former teammate Tiago Dantas following Bayern’s game against Atletico Madrid in the Champions League group stages. Germany v Japan - International Friendly Photo by Marvin Ibo Guengoer - GES Sportfoto/Getty Images If you love someone, let them go. Bayern Munich and Hansi Flick may be finding their ways back to each other. After burning through a laundry list of apparently more preferred options, the German giants have apparently realized that Flick is the best option remaining. After an acrimonious parting of ways in 2021, the parties seem to have reconciled — and it is now getting serious. From Sky Sport journalist Florian Plettenberg: Excl. News Hansi #Flick | His return to FC Bayern is now a concrete topic. Bayern wants him. First talks have started! Flick is fundamentally ready for the return.Bayern is also considering other options, just to be prepared. @SkySportDE How about that less public coaching search, eh?But Flick’s return to Bayern truly seems to be heating up, and the Bayern search to replace Thomas Tuchel winding down. At the least, the Bavarians have gone from zeroing in on candidates (Xabi Alonso, Julian Nagelsmann, Ralf Rangnick), to casting a wide net, to zeroing in again — leaving alternative options such as Manchester United’s Erik ten Hag as just that. From Sky’s Kerry Hau, via @iMiaSanMia:Bayern have informed Erik ten Hag’s management that the Dutchman is only an alternative in case a deal for Hansi Flick fell through [@kerry_hau]Is this a toxic partnership that should not be repeated? Or is Flick, winner of a famous Bavarian sextuple before crashing out as Germany boss, the right — the only — man for the job?Looking for more thoughts and analysis on Bayern Munich’s strategic direction as a club, its next coaching hire, the future of the roster, what players could think about a transfer, and more? FC Bayern Muenchen Training And Press Conference Photo by FC Bayern - Handout/Getty Images Strike that one off the list... According to a report from Sky Sport journalist Florian Plettenberg, former Bayern Munich and German national team head coach Hansi Flick will not be making a jump to Chelsea FC as the 59-year-old is focused on other opportunities: Been told from the coach’s circle that Hansi #Flick will not become the new coach of Chelsea. The 59 y/o is focused on other projects. #CFC @SkySportDEFlick has been loosely linked to the job openings at Bayern Munich and FC Barcelona, while also — allegedly — being a candidate for Manchester United should the Red Devils sack Erik ten Hag. Something, however, has prevented Flick from being a serious contender with Bayern Munich. Is it the hard feelings from Flick stepping away during his last tenure with the club? Is it the fallout from his disastrous flameout at the 2022 World Cup? Is it the perception that he can no longer control a locker room after the German national team’s ill-fated Amazon documentary?Who knows, but it does appear as if Flick has some irons in the fire, it just remains to be seen how hot they really are.

FC Bayern München v 1. FC Köln - Bundesliga Photo by Harry Langer/DeFodi Images via Getty Images The new guy is playing a hunch!. According to a report from Sky Sport journalist Florian Plettenberg, Uli Hoeneß was (surprisingly) a proponent of bringing Hansi Flick back to Bayern Munich, but was talked down on that stance by Max Eberl, who preferred to follow his hunch with Burnley coach Vincent Kompany: Bayern’s big bosses, including Uli Hoeneß, were still in favour of appointing Hansi Flick in the past few days. But Max Eberl said ‘no, trust me, I see something in Vincent Kompany’ - Eberl insisted on Kompany and ultimately prevailed internally. Hoeneß, who was a #TeamBrazzo man, back in the war between Flick, who was the coach, and sporting director Hasan “Brazzo” Salihamidžić seems to have moved on from any ill-will he might once have had toward Flick. Speaking of Flick, his coaching staff at FC Barcelona is starting to take shape as well per Plettenberg: Exclusive News #Flick | Toni Tapalovic and Marcus Sorg will become Flick‘s assistant coaches at @FCBarcelona! All done with Flick, Tapalovic and Sorg! Contracts until 2026, ready to sign ✔️ @SkySportDELooking for more thoughts and analysis of Bayern Munich’s potential hiring of Vincent Kompany, plus the latest transfer rumors involving Bayern and VfB Stuttgart’s Chris Führich, AC Milan’s Theo Hernandez, and...Jamal Musiala? TSG Hoffenheim v FC Bayern München - Bundesliga Photo by Stefan Matzke - sampics/Corbis via Getty Images When the smoke clears from this hiring, Max Eberl will me a marked man. According to a report from Sky Sport journalist Florian Plettenberg, Bayern Munich executive Max Eberl’s tenure with the club could be a short one if Vincent Kompany scuffles as the team’s head coach: Before Vincent #Kompany became a concrete option for FC Bayern, Uli Hoeneß advocated for Hansi #Flick again in the last days.➡️ However, Max Eberl made a clear statement internally. Not everyone liked it, but he prevailed as he trusts his idea with Kompany➡️ If Kompany becomes the new coach, Eberl’s future will already be closely tied to Kompany’s success. The long search for a coach faced internal criticism. Eberl, 100 % confidence in Kompany! @SkySportDEAs Bayern Munich embarked on a circus act of a coaching search with numerous failed attempts (aka rejections), it appears as if the Burnley boss will get the nod. The length of the search, plus the numerous ups and downs during the hiring process seem to have bothered the supervisory board — and that could mean trouble for Eberl. As for Kompany, journalist Sacha Tavolieri is expecting him to be formally announced as Bayern Munich’s next head coach next week with the two clubs finalizing a deal for roughly €15 million: Been told #FCBayern already working on Vincent Kompany’s communication next week. They want to make it official early next week for a presentation to the press a bit later next week. Probably Thursday. Soon an announcement about an agreement between clubs around 13M£ so 15,1M€. Almost there. #mercato #BurnleyFCLooking for more thoughts and analysis of Bayern Munich’s potential hiring of Vincent Kompany, plus the latest transfer rumors involving Bayern and VfB Stuttgart’s Chris Führich, AC Milan’s Theo Hernandez, and...Jamal Musiala? Bournemouth Training Session Photo by Robin Jones - AFC Bournemouth/AFC Bournemouth via Getty Images Will Bayern Munich splurge on a center-back this summer? Huijsen garnering more interest, including from Bayern (@FabrizioRomano)Bournemouth center-back Dean Huijsen is going to be one of the most sought-after players int he transfer market this summer — and Bayern Munich looks to be firmly in the competition to get him. Chelsea FC is also very interested in the Spain international as well: Understand Dean Huijsen has release clause into his contract valid from this summer. Told Chelsea really appreciate Huijsen and he’s high on the list, Bayern called to be informed.Bournemouth are unbeaten since Huijsen entered in the starting XI, with 8 clean sheets.Daily Telegraph journalist Matt Law (via @iMiaSanMia) backed up Romano’s claim and went further to say that Chelsea is leading the race for Huijsen and that Bayern Munich is ready to pay his rumored release clause (allegedly €60 million): Chelsea are leading the race to sign reported Bayern target Dean Huijsen and are believed to be ready to pay his £50m release clause. NUFC to make move for Min-jae? (Football Insider)Newcastle United could be getting very serious on a pursuit of Bayern Munich center-back Kim Min-jae: Min-jae was close to joining the Premier League in 2023 after Football Insider revealed Bayern Munich hijacked Man United’s transfer, and he made the move to Germany. Now, Brown, who has a wealth of experience in top-level player recruitment after over a decade at Man United during their most successful period, has claimed the centre-back is interested in the possibility of a move to England.“Newcastle want to push on from the position they’re in,” he told Football Insider. “They’ve done very well recently, finally won a trophy and look like they’ll get into the Champions League. But Eddie Howe still feels they need to strengthen their options at the back. Sven Botman has been unlucky with injuries, Dan Burn has been fantastic but he’s not a European-level defender, and Fabian Schar isn’t getting any younger.“So it’s an area Newcastle feel they could improve in and they want to do that this summer. Kim Min-jae is a name I’ve heard recently in connection with Newcastle, and he’d be a good option. Man United wanted him before he moved to Bayern, and he’s done well there but I’ve heard whispers he could now be available.“He would bring a lot of know-how and elite-level experience to this Newcastle side which is always a huge asset for any team. Plus, he’s a solid defender and I think he’d be interested in a move to the Premier League, so I think he’s going to be one they look to get over the line.”Bavarian Podcast Works — Weekend Warm-up Show Season 4, Episode 40 (Bavarian Football Works)It has been a wild week for Bayern Munich as the club prepares to try and capture the Meisterschale. That focus has not slowed down the news, however. The Bavarians are embroiled in key contract talks, transfer rumors and even potential heat on the front office. Needless to say, there is much to talk about. Let’s dive into what we have on tap for this edition of the Bavarian Podcast Works — Weekend Warm-up Show: Bayern Munich’s backline is on shaky ground at the moment — Dayot Upamecano’s contract talks have stalled, Kim Min-jae is on the hot seat, and rumors are indicating that the club could make a splurge play for Dean Huijsen. Everyone wants Bayer Leverkusen’s Florian Wirtz — Bayern Munich now has to battle Manchester City, Real Madrid, Arsenal FC, and Liverpool FC for the Germany international. Kingsley Coman might be ready to move on as the Saudis could make him an offer he can’t refuse. A brief Entertainment Rundown.
