🌿 Misloun Kaj: From Venezuela to Islam

“My father was happy. He had always wished to have a daughter who wore the hijab.”

🔹 My transformation did not happen overnight; it was a gradual process. It began with developing a deeper understanding of Islam and a stronger sense of belonging to it.

🇻🇪 Misloun Kaj was born in Caracas, Venezuela, into a Lebanese-descended family. As a child, she attended a Catholic school and knew very little about religion. Her family was not particularly religious, and she struggled with many questions about Islam.

❓ Why do women have to wear hijab while men don't?
❓ Why do women stand behind men during prayer?
❓ Why can my brothers do things that I cannot?

These questions remained with her for years.

📚 Her journey toward Islam was gradual.
At university, she became increasingly interested in Islam and began researching the experiences of converts. She visited both Shia and Sunni mosques and encountered a Latin American cleric whose approach to Islam deeply impressed her.

“He didn't simply say, ‘You must pray five times a day or you will go to hell.’ Instead, he spoke about spirituality, the meaning of religion in our lives, and what religion adds to our lives.”

🌍 Her interest in Lebanon also grew, particularly during the 2006 Lebanon War. Seeing the media coverage and the response of Lebanese and Venezuelan communities led her to become politically and socially active.

❤️ She later traveled to Lebanon and spent six months there, wanting to understand the country, its people, and the roots of their dignity, resilience, and attachment to the Prophet's family.

She was particularly touched by:

✨ The strength of family relationships
✨ Love for the Ahl al-Bayt
✨ Devotion to Lady Fatima (sa) and Lady Zaynab (sa)
✨ The spirit of resistance and solidarity

🧕 Her religious transformation also changed her relationship with her family.

Her mother was unhappy with the changes and questioned why she prayed so much and had become so serious about religious practices.

But her father was different:

“My father was happy. He had always wished to have a daughter who wore the hijab. He was only somewhat unhappy that I had learned about Islam through the Shia community.”

💭 In the end, Misloun also came to rethink the relationship between religion and politics:

“I used to think that in Venezuela, religion should not become involved in politics. But later I realized that being religious does not necessarily mean that non-Muslims cannot participate, and that a political project does not have to be defined as something exclusively for Muslims.”

🌱 Her story is not one of a single moment of conversion, but of questions, research, experience, and a gradual journey toward faith.

🕌 Islamic Occasion

✍️ The passing of ʿAbd al-Muttalib, the grandfather of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, when the Prophet ﷺ was eight years old, approximately 45 years before the Hijrah.

━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━

🕯️ A History of Threats and Protection

The history of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ begins long before his birth.

The Jews had identified the light of prophethood among the ancestors of the Prophet ﷺ and recognized it through the signs mentioned in the heavenly scriptures. They knew the characteristics of the final Prophet, his parents, and his lineage, and sought to extinguish this light before his birth and emergence.

This struggle began with the Prophet's ﷺ ancestors.

━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━

① 🛡️ The Attempt on Hāshim

Hāshim, the great-grandfather of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, was a prominent Meccan figure. His tomb is in Gaza, Palestine.

He traveled from Makkah toward Syria for trade and stayed in Yathrib with ʿAmr ibn Zayd ibn Lubayd al-Khazrajī, the leader of one of the tribes settled there.

Hāshim married Salmā, the daughter of ʿAmr, and later returned to Syria for trade.

Before leaving, he told his wife:

“It is possible that I will not return from this journey. God will grant you a son. Take very good care of him.”

Hāshim reached Gaza and completed his commercial journey. On his return, he suddenly became ill.

He summoned his companions and instructed them:

“Return to Makkah. When you reach Medina, convey my greetings to my wife and tell her about the child who will be born to her. Tell her that this child is my greatest concern.”

He then asked for pen and paper and wrote his will, much of which concerned protecting his future son and his longing to see him.

Hāshim died in Gaza.

The attack against him came too late. The child who would become ʿAbd al-Muttalib had already been conceived in Medina.

━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━

② 🕊️ The Childhood of ʿAbd al-Muttalib

Hāshim's son was born in Medina and was named Shaybah.

His mother remained responsible for his care, following Hāshim's instructions.

Years later, a man from Banū ʿAbd Manāf traveled to Yathrib for trade. There he saw a young boy who identified himself as the son of Hāshim.

The man informed al-Muṭṭalib, who went to retrieve the child and brought him to Makkah.

When they entered Makkah, people assumed that Shaybah was al-Muṭṭalib's servant. They therefore called him ʿAbd al-Muṭṭalib, and the name remained with him.

During the journey, Jews recognized al-Muṭṭalib and Shaybah and attacked them. The two escaped miraculously.

━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━

③ ⚔️ The Attempts Against ʿAbdullah

The attempt against ʿAbd al-Muṭṭalib failed, and his son ʿAbdullah was born.

ʿAbdullah was a Meccan, although his grave is in Medina, the center of the Jewish community at that time.

The attempts against him were more explicit.

One day, Wahb ibn ʿAbd Manāf, a Meccan merchant, saw 25-year-old ʿAbdullah surrounded by Jews who intended to kill him.

Wahb escaped toward Banū Hāshim and cried:

“Save ʿAbdullah! His enemies have surrounded him!”

ʿAbdullah was miraculously saved.

Wahb, having witnessed his miraculous escape and seeing the light of prophethood in his face, offered his daughter Āminah in marriage to ʿAbdullah.

The blessed marriage took place.

━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━

✨ The Light of Prophethood

Jewish priests sent a woman to marry ʿAbdullah so that the seed of the final Prophet would pass to her.

Every day she would approach ʿAbdullah and propose marriage.

After ʿAbdullah married Āminah, she stopped making the proposal.

ʿAbdullah asked her:

“Why don't you repeat what you used to say?”

She replied:

“The light that was on your forehead is no longer there.”

The light had passed on.

━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━

④ 🌙 The Death of ʿAbdullah

A few months after their marriage, while Āminah was pregnant, ʿAbdullah became ill on his return journey from Syria.

He died in Yathrib.

Muhammad ﷺ was therefore born without his father.
The attempt had once again failed to prevent the birth of the final Prophet ﷺ.

ʿAbdullah died under suspicious circumstances in Yathrib, although the exact chain connecting his death to an assassination attempt cannot be traced with certainty.

━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━

🌟 The Birth of Muhammad ﷺ

One day after the birth of Muhammad ﷺ, a Jewish scholar came to Dār al-Nadwah and asked the Quraysh:

“Was a child born among you tonight?”

They answered no.

He said:

“Then he must have been born in Palestine. A boy named Ahmad has been born, and the destruction of the Jews will be at his hands.”

The Quraysh investigated and discovered that a son had been born to ʿAbdullah ibn ʿAbd al-Muṭṭalib.

They summoned the Jewish scholar.

When he saw the newborn child, he fainted.

After regaining consciousness, he said:

“By God, prophethood has been taken away from the Children of Israel until the Day of Resurrection. This is the one who will destroy the Children of Israel.”

Seeing the joy of Quraysh, he continued:

“By God, he will do something to you that the people of East and West will remember.”

Muhammad ﷺ had been identified from the first day of his life.

━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━

🛡️ Protecting the Prophet ﷺ

The attempts to prevent his birth had failed.

The next objective was to eliminate Muhammad ﷺ.

For this reason, protecting the newborn Prophet became a critical responsibility.

━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━

① 🌿 Keeping Muhammad ﷺ Away from Makkah

ʿAbd al-Muṭṭalib understood the importance of protecting his grandson.

Muhammad ﷺ was deeply loved by his mother, his maternal grandfather, and his paternal grandfather. His father, ʿAbdullah, had already died, and Āminah had become a young widow.

The child was exceptionally beautiful.

Makkah, however, was not a safe environment. Commercial and pilgrimage caravans constantly entered the city, making it easy for strangers to move around and potentially carry out an attack.

The solution was to take Muhammad ﷺ away from Makkah secretly and place him with a wet nurse in a distant region.

He was entrusted to Ḥalīmah al-Saʿdiyyah and raised away from the city.

━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━

📚 Why Was Muhammad ﷺ Sent to a Wet Nurse?

Historians have traditionally mentioned three reasons:

1️⃣ Āminah did not have enough milk for the child.

2️⃣ The climate of Makkah was unsuitable for young children.

3️⃣ It was customary among the Arabs to send children to wet nurses outside the city.

But these explanations leave important questions unanswered.

❓ If Āminah did not have enough milk, why was a wet nurse from a distant region chosen rather than someone from Makkah?

❓ If Makkah's climate was unhealthy, why did the problem supposedly last for five years?

❓ If sending children to wet nurses was simply an Arab custom, why were other children of the same period not necessarily sent away for such a long time?

Muhammad ﷺ remained with Ḥalīmah for approximately five years, far longer than the normal two-year nursing period.

The five-year separation from his mother therefore deserves particular attention.

━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━

⚠️ Why Was Muhammad ﷺ Returned to Makkah?

The famous narration of Shaqq al-Ṣadr — the Splitting of the Chest describes an extraordinary event during Muhammad's ﷺ childhood.

According to the narration, while Muhammad ﷺ was with the children of Ḥalīmah, a man came, opened his chest, removed a clot of blood, washed the place with Zamzam water in a golden basin, and then left.

The children of Ḥalīmah ran to their mother crying:

“Muhammad has been killed! Muhammad has been killed!”

Ḥalīmah then returned Muhammad ﷺ to his grandfather, saying that she could no longer care for him.

But there is another explanation.

Muhammad ﷺ had been identified, and the region was no longer safe.

Ḥalīmah could no longer guarantee his protection.

The weakness of information available to the Jews concerning the Prophet's wet nurse had delayed their discovery of his location. Once the area was no longer secure, Muhammad ﷺ had to return to Makkah.
From that point onward, ʿAbd al-Muṭṭalib personally became his protector.

Allah says:

أَلَمْ يَجِدْكَ يَتِيمًا فَآوَىٰ

“Did He not find you an orphan and give you shelter?”

— Qur'an 93:6

The verse takes on a deeper meaning when the life of this orphan and the dangers surrounding him are considered.

━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━

② 👑 ʿAbd al-Muṭṭalib's Constant Vigilance

ʿAbd al-Muṭṭalib understood the importance of protecting Muhammad ﷺ.

He would even take his grandson to meetings of Dār al-Nadwah and seat him beside himself.

A traditional account also describes a journey in which Āminah took Muhammad ﷺ to Medina.

But this journey raises important questions.

❓ Why would ʿAbd al-Muṭṭalib allow Muhammad ﷺ to travel to Yathrib, a major Jewish center?

❓ What was the true purpose of the journey?

❓ What actually caused Āminah's death?

❓ Why was the child taken with her despite the dangers?

❓ Did Āminah sacrifice herself while protecting her son?

These questions remain worthy of historical investigation.

━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━

🕯️ The Final Will of ʿAbd al-Muṭṭalib

The importance of protecting Muhammad ﷺ is especially clear in the final instructions of ʿAbd al-Muṭṭalib.

Muhammad ﷺ was eight years old when his grandfather died.

Arab custom generally called for responsibility to be entrusted to the eldest son.

Yet ʿAbd al-Muṭṭalib appointed Abū Ṭālib to protect Muhammad ﷺ, even though Abū Ṭālib was not his eldest son and his older brother was still alive.

A major portion of ʿAbd al-Muṭṭalib's final instructions concerned the protection of Muhammad ﷺ.

He told Abū Ṭālib:

“If you do not promise to protect this child, I will not leave this world in peace.”

Abū Ṭālib took his father's hand and promised to protect Muhammad ﷺ with his life and wealth.

━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━

🛡️ Abū Ṭālib Becomes the Protector

After ʿAbd al-Muṭṭalib's death, the protection of Muhammad ﷺ became the responsibility of Abū Ṭālib.

Abū Ṭālib devoted four years to caring for Muhammad ﷺ without engaging in trade.

When famine struck Makkah and circumstances eventually forced him to resume commercial activity, he could not leave Muhammad ﷺ behind.

He therefore took him on the journey.

━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━

✝️ The Encounter with Baḥīrā

When the caravan reached Buṣrā in Syria, a messenger from Baḥīrā, the head of a Christian school, came to invite the travelers to a meal.

Caravans had passed through this route for years, yet this time the travelers were specifically invited.

Abū Ṭālib accepted and brought Muhammad ﷺ with him, although he kept him away from Baḥīrā at first.

Baḥīrā pointed toward Muhammad ﷺ and asked:

“Who is he?”

Abū Ṭālib answered:

“My son.”

Baḥīrā replied:

“He is not your son. His father and mother have died.”

Abū Ṭālib then said:

“You are right. I am his uncle.”

Baḥīrā asked permission to speak with Muhammad ﷺ.

He questioned him and received his answers.

Then Baḥīrā fell at Muhammad's ﷺ hands and feet, kissed him repeatedly, and said:

“If I live to see your time, I will fight before you and strive against your enemies.”

He then warned Abū Ṭālib:

“Take him back to his city. Protect him from the Jews, for there is no person of scripture who does not know that he has been born. If they see him, they will recognize him.”

Abū Ṭālib immediately returned Muhammad ﷺ from the journey.

━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━

⚔️ The Seven Men

The warning of Baḥīrā was followed by another extraordinary event.

Seven Jews came to Baḥīrā seeking Muhammad ﷺ.

Abū Ṭālib understood the danger.

From that point forward, he never again traveled without Muhammad ﷺ.

━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━

🛡️ Abū Ṭālib's Unceasing Protection

Abū Ṭālib remained vigilant throughout Muhammad's ﷺ youth.

He would:

🔹 Eat before Muhammad ﷺ to ensure that the food had not been poisoned.

🔹 Sleep beside Muhammad ﷺ at night.

🔹 Place children around him while they slept so that an attacker could not easily reach him.

🔹 Enter places before Muhammad ﷺ to make sure no enemy was waiting.

🔹 Remain constantly aware of potential threats.
This protection continued until Muhammad ﷺ reached approximately 25 years of age.

At that point, Muhammad ﷺ himself asked to enter the world of trade.

━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━

🌙 A Life Protected for a Greater Mission

From the birth of ʿAbd al-Muṭṭalib to the childhood of Muhammad ﷺ, the story follows a continuous chain:

Hāshim → ʿAbd al-Muṭṭalib → ʿAbdullah → Muhammad ﷺ

The narrative is one of prophetic lineage, recognition, danger, sacrifice, and protection.

ʿAbd al-Muṭṭalib protected his grandson until his final days.

Then Abū Ṭālib inherited that responsibility and devoted himself to safeguarding Muhammad ﷺ through his childhood and youth.

✨ The story of the Prophet's ﷺ early life is therefore also a story of those who stood around him, protected him, and preserved the child who would become the final Messenger of Allah ﷺ.
