I was in fifth grade when the first Five Nights at Freddy’s game was released in 2014. Within my first day of playing, I was hooked. I watched hundreds of Let’s Plays and theory videos to keep up to date with the story, attempting to unravel the intriguing mystery alongside the rest of the fandom. With time, however, the lore has devolved into one of the most convoluted storylines in gaming history.

The premise of the original game is simple: You work as the night shift security guard at Freddy Fazbear’s Pizza, a family pizzeria filled with animatronic characters. Each night, these characters roam around the pizzeria and you must prevent them from entering the security office. If they see you, they will assume you are an endoskeleton without a suit and thus attempt to stuff you into one of the spare animatronic suits in the back, killing you in the process. You’re armed with only your cameras, doors and limited electric power to help. To beat the game, you must survive five full nights as the characters become progressively harder to evade each night.

One of the keys to

the platform’s success is the ease with which you can invite friends to join you in different virtual worlds or games. They can spawn right next to each other at the click of a button. With open chat channels to friends on their phones, my kids are constantly negotiating which game to join. There are no lengthy downloads or loading screens, plus avatars and basic controls are universal.

Among all of the titles that Quantic Dream worked on, I knew the least about Beyond: Two Souls. It got some buzz around it due to very high profile actors before release, yet after the game was out not a lot of people seemed to care much about it. Even the biggest Quantic Dream fanboys seemed to be more excited about the potential for more Fahrenheit or Heavy Rain, or were raging about how good Detroit is. Heck, even a potential sequel to Omikron seemed more exciting to people then talking about Beyond.
