Dietary patterns at just two years of age are associated with cognitive performance at ages six and seven, suggesting that early childhood nutrition—particularly exposure to ultraprocessed foods—may play a meaningful role in shaping brain development Read…
👶 A 2015 study in Pelotas, Brazil, found that toddlers' diets at age two were linked to their cognitive performance at ages six and seven. Children with "unhealthy" dietary patterns, characterized by snacks and processed meats, scored lower on IQ tests.

🍎 The "unhealthy" pattern included snacks, instant noodles, sweet biscuits, candies, soft drinks, sausages, and processed meats. The "healthy" pattern included beans, fruits, vegetables, baby foods, and natural fruit juices. The "healthy" pattern did not show a link to higher IQ scores, as it was common among most children in the study (92% consumed four or more healthy foods).

📈 This negative association was stronger in children who had early-life deficits in weight, height, or head circumference, indicating a cumulative disadvantage where biological vulnerability and poor diet interact.

🌍 The findings, published Feb. 02, 2026, are significant globally, as ultraprocessed foods are common in early childhood diets worldwide and may interfere with neurodevelopment.

People who consume ultra-processed foods have worse muscle health: a diet high in ultra-processed foods is associated with higher amounts of fat stored inside thigh muscles, regardless of calorie or fat intake, physical activity or sociodemographic factors…
• 🦵 A study published in Radiology found that diets high in ultra-processed foods are linked to more fat within thigh muscles, a factor associated with knee osteoarthritis.

• 🍔 Researchers analyzed data from 615 individuals (average age 60, BMI 27) and discovered that higher consumption of ultra-processed foods correlated with increased intramuscular fat, independent of calorie intake or activity levels.

• 💡 The study, led by Zehra Akkaya, MD, from the University of California, San Francisco, suggests that improving diet quality by reducing ultra-processed foods may be crucial for muscle health and managing knee osteoarthritis, beyond just weight loss.

A major European clinical consensus confirms that ultra-processed foods (UPFs) increase the risk of cardiovascular death by up to 65%. Experts are now calling on doctors to treat food processing as a standalone risk factor, separate from nutrient profiles.

Researchers have found that people who ate more ultra-processed foods have worse health outcomes, even after accounting for the overall nutritional quality of the foods. They were also more likely to have conditions such as diabetes, metabolic syndrome, and…
🍎 New Tufts University study in American Journal of Public Health suggests ultra-processed food processing itself, beyond nutrients, may independently contribute to health risks like heart disease, diabetes, and early death.

📊 Research analyzed 1999-2018 NHANES data, finding that for every 10% calorie increase from ultra-processed foods, participants showed worse health markers, including higher body weight, poorer blood sugar control, and increased risk of death, even after adjusting for nutrient content.

🔍 Findings indicate factors like changes in food structure, additives, and packaging chemicals, not just refined grains, sodium, or added sugars, could be driving these negative health outcomes.

🗣️ Senior author Dariush Mozaffarian highlighted that these results can inform policy efforts, such as defining ultra-processed foods and considering warning labels or limits in school meals.

Scientists fed people two 300-calorie meals with nearly identical carbs, fat, protein and salt. One was ultra-processed (deli turkey, instant mash, cookie, cereal), the other wasn't (egg, banana, cheese). The ultra-processed meal spiked insulin much higher…
🔬 A study in Nature Metabolism found ultra-processed foods significantly alter metabolic responses compared to minimally processed foods, even when nutritionally identical.

💉 Participants experienced higher insulin levels and sustained elevated blood sugar for longer after consuming ultra-processed meals, despite similar calorie counts.

🧠 Brain activity monitoring suggested that cues related to food processing might influence how our bodies burn calories and process rewards, beyond just nutrient content.

🍎 91% of Critiques Against Ultraprocessed Food Standards Linked to Food Industry
A new study in the American Journal of Public Health reveals that 91% of academic criticisms of the NOVA classification system, a leading standard for defining ultraprocessed foods, have at least one author with financial ties to the food industry.

📊 Debate Over Ultraprocessed Food Definition Stalls Policy Efforts
Proposed policies to curb ultraprocessed food consumption, such as those by Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr., are facing roadblocks. White House officials are concerned definitions could impact a large portion of the food supply and increase liability for the food industry.

🌍 Global Pushback Against Ultraprocessed Food Classifications Intensifies
Discussions around ultraprocessed foods are escalating globally. While organizations like the Pan American Health Organization embrace the NOVA system, food industry groups are voicing strong opposition, raising technical and fundamental objections to the classification.
