π¨βπ¨ 20 March 1597. Architect (not "Archistar") Antonio Da Ponte passes away in Venice aged 85.
Anyone who designed and built a mastepiece like Rialto Bridge, should well deserve a prominent place in history, don't you agree?
That was not the case for #AntonioDaPonte π€·ββοΈ, he was selected in a contest held by Venice Doge, who wanted #RialtoBridge rebuilt out of stone. #Rialto was in fact originally a wooden bridge but it kept on burning or being damaged. The best architects of the time were called for projects: #Michelangelo, #Sansovino, #Palladio, #Barozzi, but either were rejected or renounced, for it was impossible to build such a thing in that way!
The words pronounced both by fellow architects and Venetian citizens, which accompanied Da Ponte in 1588 - 1591 (3 years for building the bridge) were: "You're never gonna do it!".
HE DID IT in fact, at the time Rialto was the only bridge that crossed the #GrandCanal... still there today in all its splendour! π€© More #VeniceHistory in the Chat Roomπ

ππΈVenice Celebrations Series. Festa del Redentore
This weekend in Venice is dedicated to the ancient Festa del Redentore (Redeemer). This comes every third Sunday of July!
On the Saturday's eve there are fantastic night fireworks and Saint Mark's basin begins to fill up with Venetian boats of all kinds, festooned with balloons and garlands.
The #Redentore is a traditional feast to give thanks for the end of the terrible plague of 1576, which killed 50,000 people in Venice including the great painter #Tiziano Vecellio (Titian). The Doge Alvise I Mocenigo promised to build a magnificent church if the plague ended.
Andrea #Palladio was commissioned, assisted by #AntonioDaPonte, and built a majestic church (πΈβοΈ) on the Island of Giudecca, which today is one of the most important examples of Palladian religious architecture.
On the Redentore Sunday, there's the traditional pilgrimage to the Church which is reachable on a bridge made of boats (πΈβοΈ) across the #Giudecca Canal.

Andrea Palladio, widely considered one of the most influential architects in history, was born in #Padua, at the time under the Republic Of Venice.
The city of #Vicenza, with its 23 buildings designed by #Palladio, and the 24 Palladian Villas of the #Veneto region are listed by UNESCO as World Heritage Sites.
In particular the influence of #PalladianVillas design and style can be found all over the world in public buildings and constructions, the most famous example is the US CapitolπΊπΈ
Here in Venice we can admire several churches designed and built by #AndreaPalladio, most notably the Church and Refectory of San Giorgio Maggiore island, the Church of Redentore, the Church of Le Zitelle, the faΓ§ade for the Church of San Francesco della Vigna, the faΓ§ade for the Basilica of San Pietro di Castello (see πΈβοΈ).
