👨🎨 20 March 1597. Architect (not "Archistar") Antonio Da Ponte passes away in Venice aged 85.
Anyone who designed and built a mastepiece like Rialto Bridge, should well deserve a prominent place in history, don't you agree?
That was not the case for #AntonioDaPonte 🤷♂️, he was selected in a contest held by Venice Doge, who wanted #RialtoBridge rebuilt out of stone. #Rialto was in fact originally a wooden bridge but it kept on burning or being damaged. The best architects of the time were called for projects: #Michelangelo, #Sansovino, #Palladio, #Barozzi, but either were rejected or renounced, for it was impossible to build such a thing in that way!
The words pronounced both by fellow architects and Venetian citizens, which accompanied Da Ponte in 1588 - 1591 (3 years for building the bridge) were: "You're never gonna do it!".
HE DID IT in fact, at the time Rialto was the only bridge that crossed the #GrandCanal... still there today in all its splendour! 🤩 More #VeniceHistory in the Chat Room👇

👨🎨31 May 1594. Jacopo Robusti, worldwide known as Tintoretto, passes away in Venice.
One of the most prominent painters of Venice #Renaissance, #Tintoretto was famous for his phenomenal energy in painting which gained him the nickname Il Furioso ("The Furious"). His works are characterised by muscular figures, dramatic gestures and bold use of perspective: his paintings and portraits are held in all most important museums around the world!
In Venice his paintings and frescoes are in the main Palaces, Churches and Museums (Accademia Galleries, La Salute, San Polo, San Cassiano, Ca D'Oro) but 2 places more than others show Tintoretto's fantastic work:
📸 The stunning Church of Madonna Dell'Orto in Cannaregio where Tintoretto is buried (it's also part of my favorite #WalkingTour !)
📸 The breathtaking Scuola Grande di San Rocco in San Polo, considered the "Sistine Chapel of Venice", entirely decorated by Tintoretto, like #Michelangelo did for the Cappella Sistina in #Rome.
