Unshu (雲手), literally “cloud hands”, It contains many intricate hand techniques, such as the Ippon Nukite (one finger strike) in the opening sequence. Unshu was created by Seisho Aragaki sometime around 1860-1870. Aragaki was a Japanese and Chinese language interpreter to the Shuri court, and a master of monk fist and white crane styles. It is somewhat a condensation of other katas (e.g., Bassai, Kosokun, Jion, Wanshu, Jitte, Chinto and Niseishi), hence it is essential to have mastered these before practicing Unshu.

Meoto-de (or Meoto-te 夫婦手) is a concept that refers to the coordinated use of both hands in action simultaneously (Dōji 同時). The term "Meoto" (夫婦) means "husband and wife," symbolizing a complementary relationship, much like how a married couple works together in harmony.

In karate, this means that one hand typically performs an offensive movement (such as a punch or strike, sometimes even in combination with a kick), while the other plays a defensive or supporting role (such as blocking, pulling, or controlling the opponent). Unlike standard techniques where the hands often function independently, Meoto-de 夫婦手 emphasizes simultaneous action, allowing them to work together as a unit to enhance power, balance, and overall effectiveness.

Mixing traditional and modern tools brings depth to your training. Nigirigame exercises build grip, forearm endurance and strength. Power bag workout develops explosive strikes, accuracy, and conditioning. By combining both in your sessions, you train body and mind through contrast: the discipline of old methods with the intensity of modern impact training. This variation keeps practice dynamic and complete.
