🖨 ESP8266 ESC/POS Smart Thermal Printer

[Davide Gironi] has built his own note transcriber from a point-of-sale receipt printer and an ESP8266.

You’ve seen these receipt printers at the order window of restaurants. A server puts in an order from any of the machines throughout the restaurant and a paper summary spits out for the chef line to start in on (and even cuts itself off from the roll). Why shouldn’t we have this convenience in our own lives?

The printer communicates using a variant of the Epson Standard Code for Printers, for which [Davide] has written a library and thankfully shared the code. Adding an ESP8266 using a couple voltage regulators and some passive components makes this wireless, except for power. It has all the fun bells and whistles to set up the Wi-Fi credentials and once running, just push the button on the base and it’ll spit out your data.

📟 Network Traffic Visualizer

At its core, this board design is a simple desk toy that connects an ESP8266 module to a shift register to display data on the 8 blue LEDs. The Arduino sketch measures how many packets are flying around on the ESP's Wi-Fi channel, and displaying the intensity on the LEDs much like a VU meter.

The firmware uses the promiscuous mode of the ESP8266 to allow it to capture any packets present on the selected AP Channel. This means that the board can see all the activity on that channel without connecting to any of the networks itself.

These packets are like the envelopes of the internet activity: containing the data sent between devices and the internet. By counting how many packets the board sees in a given time interval, it can display the intensity of the network activity on the 8 LEDs using a shift register.
