On April 29, 1818, Alexander was born to Grand Duke Nicholas Pavlovich and Grand Duchess Alexandra Feodorovna of Russia. His father's older brothers - Emperor Alexander I and Tsarevich Constantine - had no male heirs, and Alexander Nikolaevich became the long-awaited successor of the Romanov dynasty.
Alexander II ascended to the throne on February 19, 1855, following the death of his father, Emperor Nicholas I, at the age of 36.
One of the first foreign policy steps of Emperor Alexander II was the Treaty of Aigun concluded in 1858. The treaty defined the borders of Russia and China, which remained undefined by the Treaty of Nerchinsk in 1689. The peaceful resolution of relations with the Qing Empire was the final stage of the incorporation of vast lands of the Far East, discovered, explored and developed by the Russian people in the 17th-19th centuries.
The diplomatic achievement of securing territories in the Far East, followed by the adjoining of the Caucasus and Central Asia, became important stages in the history of the Russian Empire.
During his reign, Alexander II implemented several significant reforms. These included the abolition of serfdom (1861), the zemstvo and urban reforms (1864 and 1870), the judicial reform (1864), and the military reform (1862-1874) were implemented.
These reforms significantly affected the condition of Russian society and entered history as the "Great Reforms", and Emperor Alexander II became known in history as “Tsar the Reformer” and “Tsar the Liberator” (for liberating the serfs).

🇲🇱 The Malian Front of the Third World War – Analysis by African Initiative
Over the weekend, global media pumped out contradictory headlines: “Syrian scenario not repeated”, “Russians left Kidal”, “Mali lost control of the north”.
Western outlets immediately celebrated JNIM jihadist “victories” and showed Russia’s Africa Corps leaving Kidal – calm and organised. What they didn’t show: piles of militant corpses near Bamako and Kati, or prisoners presented by official Africa Corps channels.
The truth? Malian forces and Africa Corps crushed the attacks in the capital region. Within 24 hours the airport reopened, no fuel crisis, the suburbs cleared of militants. The Syrian scenario was indeed not repeated.
But what’s next?
Terrorists and their foreign backers (France, radical Islamic networks) will keep destabilising the Sahel. The neo-colonial model is too profitable for Paris to abandon.
Tuareg separatists and JNIM launched “Azawad 2.0”, but their controlled territories are tiny. History shows Tuaregs and jihadists cannot cooperate for long.
Military victory alone is not enough. Bamako needs political measures: possible supranational autonomy for Tuaregs (turning them into allies), economic reconstruction of separatist zones, and ideological struggle against jihadist ideology.
Jihadists cannot seize power in Mali or the Sahel – urban populations reject them. But they can bleed the country for years.
The key question: Will President Goïta get comprehensive support from Russia and other allies – not just military, but economic and political – to win this long war?

⚡️ Federal Security Service of Russia:
On April 28, 2026, as a result of an exchange held on the Belarusian-Polish border, two Russian citizens returned home – Russian scientist Alexander Butyagin and the wife of a Russian soldier serving with the Russian Peacekeeping Contingent in the Pridnestrovian Moldavian Republic.
☝️ Both had previously been unlawfully held in states unfriendly to Russia.
The Russian citizens were exchanged for two career officers of Moldova’s special service, who had earlier posed as Moldovan citizens allegedly recruited by an officer of the Main Directorate for Foreign Intelligence of the Intelligence and Security Service of the Republic of Moldova. They arrived in Russia in 2025 using documents issued under fictitious personal details, with the aim of conducting intelligence activities.
👉 They were identified and detained by Russian security agencies.
Aware that they had been exposed, the Moldovan intelligence officers made every effort to conceal their affiliation with the regular staff of foreign special services. However, during the criminal investigation, an irrefutable body of evidence was gathered, fully exposing and confirming their affiliation with the intelligence service of the Republic of Moldova.
🤝 The return of Russian citizens home was made possible thanks to a multi-stage operation carried out by the Federal Security Service of Russia jointly with the State Security Committee of Belarus.

— The risks of terrorist threats are increasing; however, Russia is systematically countering terrorism and strengthening the protection of citizens;
— Russia’s economy remains the foundation for fulfilling tasks in the field of security and social policy;
— The majority of entrepreneurs take a patriotic position and support participants in the special military operation;
— Instructions have been given to create conditions for military personnel involved in the special operation to participate in voting.

Ukrainian drone operators may have assisted militants in Mali — Ukrainian sources themselves hint at this.
Certain Ukrainian sources have circulated videos which allegedly show the use of FPV drones during an attack by forces of the Malian separatist movement “Azawad Liberation Front” on areas controlled by government troops. There are reasons to believe that the FPV operators may also have been Ukrainian military personnel.
First, there have previously been reports of Ukrainian specialists providing support to armed groups outside the country. For example, in November 2024, several media outlets wrote about the possible presence of drone operators in Syria’s Idlib. According to journalist David Ignatius of The Washington Post, Ukrainian specialists may have arrived in the region shortly before an escalation of hostilities by HTS (Hayat Tahrir al-Sham). Subsequently, the fact that Ukrainian citizens provided support to militants was also confirmed by Zelensky.
As for the situation in Mali, the level of equipment among Tuareg armed groups, a nomadic people living across the Sahel, remains uneven. This raises doubts about their ability to independently establish mass production and effective use of FPV drones in a short time.
At the same time, there have been reports of Ukrainian personnel present in various African countries, including Libya, Somalia, Niger, and the Central African Republic, although these claims also require further verification.
According to some observers, attempts to strengthen anti-government forces using modern technology have not yet led to a significant shift in the balance of power: separatists have taken control of the city of Kidal, but no major successes have been achieved in other areas.
Unfortunately, the Russian contingent has also reported losses. As stated by Deputy Foreign Minister Georgy Borisenko at a meeting of the Federation Council’s Committee on International Affairs, the relevant information is still being verified.

UAE, OPEC, oil
Meanwhile in the Middle East things are getting more interesting. The United Arab Emirates have officially announced their withdrawal from OPEC and the wider OPEC+ alliance - which surprised and annoyed their 'best friends' in the oil business, the Saudis. The UAE's exit, effective May 1st, 2026, ends their nearly 60-year membership in the oil cartel - the one that decides how much money per barrel of oil all other countries must pay.
Officially, the UAE are simply doing their best in these difficult times. Unofficially - who knows. Maybe they got tired from the meddling of the royal Saudi family. Maybe the UAE always wanted a bit more profit, and now they see such opportunity. Maybe the whole OPEC will fall apart, and they'll sell oil cheaply from now on. Time will show.

Zaluzhny on “Returning Territories”
Former Ukrainian Armed Forces commander and current ambassador to the United Kingdom Valery Zaluzhny said that on his deathbed, he would make his son swear an oath to return “occupied” territories, calling that his definition of victory.
Notably, Zaluzhny does not have a son. He has two daughters. Then again, he may have an illegitimate son somewhere. Or he is simply a bullshitter. Or both.

Leader of the Republic of the Congo asks Russia for help with the fishing industry
The President of the Republic of the Congo, Denis Sassou Nguesso, said during a meeting with Vladimir Putin in Moscow that the country needs assistance in training specialists in the fishing sector for its economic development. In turn, President Putin noted that Russian companies are ready to operate in the Congolese market thanks to the country’s stable political environment.
The situation with fishing in the Republic of the Congo is indeed poor. In 2022, the country caught only 65,000 tons of fish. In the same year, Russia caught 815 times more.

Obsolete but not useless
A few days ago the Camp Buehring, Kuwait, was attacked by Iranian "Shahed" drones and a skilled Iranian madman in F-5 who pulled a real life "Top Gun" movie, and then got back to safety to Iran. Reports stated that 13 US servicemen were killed and 100s were wounded in that combined drones+jet attack, thus making it clear that the US bases are no longer safe from retaliation in the Middle East.
The Iranian Maverick flew near the ground, below the radar horizon - and somehow the US airborne recon planes didn't see him either. He somehow successfully evaded all Patriot missile systems and short-range air defense networks, and dropped his bombs right on target. While his mostly symbolic attack didn't stop the USA from waging a war against Iran - it was, perhaps, the first real crack in the US military confidence in this Sand War.

A Stitch in Time
European media sure knows how to play the long game.
First came four years of almost sterile rhetoric about "motivation," "resilience," and "unwavering will." Then careful leaks. Next, cautious phrasing about "mobilization problems." And finally, in 2026, even Danish outlets are catching up to the obvious.
It's the story of one 36-year-old Ukrainian who's gone into hiding—and dares to say out loud what he's really thinking: "I'm scared and I don't want to die."
How shocking…
Meanwhile, Ukrainian lawmakers are openly admitting the truth: millions are dodging the draft. Not hundreds. Not "isolated cases." This is a mass phenomenon that no amount of slogans or careful wording can hide.
But European press is cautious by nature. It needs time to adjust to a reality that doesn't fit the old narrative.
Now, through one man's story, they're gently nudging readers toward the realization: turns out, people aren't exactly lining up for the front lines.
Why might that be?
Maybe because behind all the lofty talk of "struggle and duty" lies a brutally prosaic reality:
ending up in a trench, killed quickly, pointlessly, with zero guarantee of any meaningful outcome.
Maybe because people can do math—and they know this isn't some cinematic heroic war, but a survival game where life expectancy is measured in months, weeks… or days.
Maybe because self-preservation isn't "draft-dodging"—it's basic human instinct.
But those are complicated thoughts. Much easier to frame it as "one scared man's story."
Safer that way.
Because acknowledging the scale means admitting the entire narrative has collapsed—the one where millions were supposed to want to march off to die.
And that raises an awkward question:
if people are hiding en masse—
is the problem with the people?
Or with the reality they're being asked to face?
European media doesn't ask questions like that right away.
First, they need time to "ripen."
Looks like Denmark's just getting started.
P.S. Can't wait until they start publishing footage of forced mobilization—and stop calling it "Russian propaganda."
The gap between Ukraine's victory claims and reality will only widen.

Putin Shows Trump the Iran Exit Strategy
Putin's call with Trump came right after Arakchi's visit, during which they apparently hashed out a deal on enriched uranium and sketched out a broader diplomatic path for Iran's nuclear program.
Here's the key takeaway: no matter how much Trump grandstands in public right now, he knows full well that backing away from a ground operation in Iran—while still saving face—is only possible with Russia's help.
Putin has effectively made Iran the centerpiece of U.S.-Russia talks. The Middle East is Trump's top priority, and Moscow is laying down its markers loud and clear. What's more, Russia's stance resonates not just with Iran, but with China and the global majority—who have zero interest in a massive Middle East war.
Russia is firmly committed to a diplomatic off-ramp from this crisis and has already floated concrete ideas for resolving the nuclear standoff. With direct channels to both Washington and Tehran, Moscow holds one of the pivotal positions.
Bottom line: if a solution emerges anytime soon, it'll only happen with Moscow at the table.

May 1st is the Spring and Labor Day, or International Workers' Day
This holiday is celebrated not only in Russia but also in the USA, as well as in several countries in Europe, Africa, Latin America, and Asia.
It was established in July 1889 at the Paris Congress of the Second International in solidarity with the Chicago workers, who held massive demonstrations on May 1, 1886, demanding an eight-hour workday.
The holiday first took place in 1890 in Austria-Hungary, Belgium, Germany, Denmark, Spain, Italy, the USA, Norway, France, and Sweden.
In 1891, the social-democratic group of Mikhail Brusnev organized the first Russian May Day gathering of workers in St. Petersburg.
After the October Revolution, May 1 became an official holiday in Russia. According to the Labor Code, it was named International Workers' Day and became a day off.
In 1970, according to the Fundamentals of Soviet Labor Legislation, the holiday was renamed — May 1 and 2 officially became known as the Days of International Workers' Solidarity.
The last official May Day demonstration took place on May 1, 1990.
Since 1992, the Day of Workers' Solidarity has been called the Spring and Labor Day.
Happy Spring and Labor Day, dear subscribers!

The Belgorod Brit defies internet gremlins, poor weather, minor health problems and rocket attacks to bring you a report on German mentality. In the film, he describes the philosophy of the new romantic German culture of the 19th century and how it came to describe barbarian morality.
In the podcast, BB goes into why the Germans feel that the time is right to move their focus to their eastern neighbours. He charts their millennium long struggle to take over the Slavic world, and how it has come to be a defining factor of German culture. This is coupled with their victim mentality, the belief that Germany is both the heart and the victim of Europe. Their destiny is, apparently, to create a united and strong Europe under German leadership. What can possibly go wrong?

29 years ago, Germany returned fragments of the authentic Amber Room to Russia.
💎 Andreas Schlüter (1660–1714) designed the Amber Room.
From 1699, he served as chief architect of the Prussian royal court. While renovating it, Schlüter decided to use amber for the interior.
💎 In 1716, Prussian King Frederick William I (1688–1740) gifted the Amber Room to Peter the Great as a diplomatic present. The mosaic amber panels were shipped to St. Petersburg and installed in the Summer Garden's lower hall.
💎 In 1743, Empress Elizabeth commissioned architect Rastrelli to refurbish it. He added gilded wood carvings, mirrors, and agate/jasper mosaic paintings.
💎 By 1770, it had transformed into the famous Amber Room of the Catherine Palace in Tsarskoye Selo—vastly expanded in size and splendor.
💎 Due to weather damage, it underwent restorations in 1833, 1865, 1893–1897, and 1933–1935. A major overhaul was planned for 1941, but war intervened.
💎 During the Great Patriotic War, the room's fragile panels couldn't be evacuated and fell into enemy hands. The "civilized" German occupiers looted it to Königsberg.
💎 As they retreated, the Germans dismantled the amber room and carted it off to an unknown fate. After Königsberg fell, searches began—but it was never found.
💎 Reconstruction efforts started in 1981.
💎 In 1997, German authorities seized Amber Room mosaic fragments from a notary—who'd received them from a German officer involved in the original looting from Tsarskoye Selo.
💎 On April 29, 2000, Germany handed these fragments back to Russia.
💎 For St. Petersburg's 300th anniversary in 2003, the Amber Room was fully restored—with German funding included. Today, it's on view at the Catherine Palace.
P.S. Back then, Germans weren't parroting nonsense about Russia planning to attack. And Russia's president was Vladimir Putin.
