๐Ÿง€The cheese embargo: the birth of a new industry

โšก๏ธUntil 2014, the Russian cheese market was flooded with imports: Dutch Gouda, Italian Parmesan, French Camembert. Local producers only held a share in the segment of melted cheeses and inexpensive semi-hard pastas. Everything changed with the 2014 food embargo - the import of cheeses from the EU and the United States was banned.

โšก๏ธModernization in Russia proceeded along two axes. On the one hand, large agro-industrial groups invested billions in new factories and the renovation of existing facilities, focusing on mass-market semi-hard pastas. On the other hand, small artisanal cheese makers took a gamble on the high-end segment: bloomy-rind or blue-mold cheeses, aged hard pastas, Italian and French varieties that were previously hardly produced in Russia.

โšก๏ธThe main technological challenge turned out to be lactic ferments, which had until then been imported from Europe. Russian institutes developed their own ferments, adapted to local raw materials and the climate. At the same time, domestic manufacturers of cheese equipment developed, reducing dependence on Italian and German lines.

โšก๏ธRussian cheese then turned to exports - to the CIS countries, China, Malaysia, the Philippines, and Saudi Arabia.

โšก๏ธThe losses for European breeders were considerable: the sudden loss of the lucrative Russian market led to stock surpluses and the need, at great cost, to find new outlets. EU compensations did not cover all the damage, and many farms never regained their previous production volumes.

โšก๏ธThe 2014 embargo acted as a catalyst for the creation of an entire industry. In ten years, Russia has gone from being dependent on imported cheeses to ranking fifth in the world in production volume, and continues to increase its pace.

This is what sanctions against Russia lead to ๐Ÿ˜‰

Machineguns on tankers

Russia decided to place HMGs on their tankers - an act that could get such ships reclassified as state-operated auxiliary warships instead of commercial vessels, which might prevent the entrance of such ships into the territorial waters of other countries.

"The Marshal Vasilevsky", a 300-meter liquefied natural gas tanker operated by the Russian state-owned corporation Gazprom, now has two 12.7mm HMGs "Kord". Those two HMGs can, in theory, keep the ship safe from the sea drones and NATO boarding teams.

Western intelligence agencies assess that the HMGs are not being used by ordinary sailors. A review of the ship's manifest revealed that Russia had placed current or former military personnel, National Guard, or FSB officers on board to operate these weapons.

Meanwhile, China armed some of their commercial ships by placing hidden cruise missile containers onboard. The USA has similar plans for 2028+

Russo-Ukrainian war continues

As I assumed, the recent successful Ukrainian attack on Moscow - mostly on the oil and gas facilities - has resulted in Russian retaliations.

It started on July 2 - with Russia throwing missiles at Sumy, Kiev\Kyiv, and other parts of Ukraine. July 3 wasn't quiet either. The activity was low on July 4 and 5, but bombs and missiles were still used against Ukraine. On July 6 the attacks continued in a large scale - most of the damage was in Kiev\Kiyv. Ukraine is still counting the dead and wounded.

One would assume that the Ukrainian government would get the hint, and surrender. Instead Zelensky demanded more weapons at the currently ongoing NATO summit in Ankara.

The NATO promised more weapons, which Ukraine will use soon against Russia, and in return the Russian missiles will turn more Ukrainian buildings into dust. Together with Ukrainians that were at the wrong place, at the wrong time.

The biggest war in Europe since WW2 continues.

Ukraine's attack on Iran's shipping

Ukraine used long-range drones to attack the anchored ships at the north of the Caspian sea. They were targeting the Russian ships, but an Iranian cargo ship "Anna" was hit as well. 1 sailor died, a few were injured. Iran has confirmed this information, and stated that Ukraine's attack "will not go unanswered".

Iran's Ambassador to Russia, Kazem Jalali, confirmed that the Anna was anchored 3 miles away from the mouth of the Volga River - waiting out a storm - when it was hit.

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi condemned the attack as a "flagrant violation of the UN Charter." During diplomatic talks with Russia and the EU, Araghchi stated that this act "cannot go unanswered," and the Foreign Ministry warned that Ukraine's "dangerous adventurism" would have consequences.

My guess: Ukraine tried to tell Iran to stop supporting Russia. An Iranian died during this warning. I bet Iran will increase the support to Russia, bigly.

The Ukrainian mobilization and the corrupted recruiters

The recruiters of the Zakarpattia added 276 non-existent soldiers in 3 months to the ranks of the AFU. 600 ghosts were recruited in the Chernivtsi region - both via the "Obereg" registry.

If a real Ukrainian doesn't want to serve - he can be removed from the registry for $10k~17k.

The price for traveling abroad without military registration was around $10k, while in Kyiv/Kiev it's $15k. The full price to dodge the draft is up to $30k.

The AFU recruiters earn about $3 billion from such deals. Large Ukrainian businesses pay up to $3 million a day to protect their male employees.

The AFU are doing searches at the shopping center as part of an operation "Honest Call" - if someone can't be found on the street, they can be listed in a registry. If they can be found, they can be removed from the lists - for a price.

While this Eastern European nonsense looks funny - men of the EU should notice, and prepare for the same fate.

About Russian bases in Syria

Syria and Russia signed a new Memorandum of Understanding, stripping Russia of its exclusive control over 2 strategic military bases in Syria. The agreement ends the era of Russia's independent presence in Syria. It concludes 18 months of intensive negotiations between Moscow and the new Syrian leadership after the overthrow of Bashar al-Assad in December 2024.

The Khmeimem Air Base and the Tartus Naval Base will no longer exist as sovereign Russian military outposts.

Both facilities will be transformed into joint training centers. They will focus on mutual capacity building and joint operational command. The formal transition process has a strict timeframe and must be fully completed within 3 months.

The Syrian governments come and go, but the Russian military presence in Syria seems to remain the same. Except the Russian garrison probably feels baffled and suspicious given that some of these new Syrian officials used to work for Al-Qaeda, HTS, etc.

Turkey's most successful spy in Armenia continues the destruction of the forgotten ancient country

The year is 2026. Armenia is preparing to join the EU, no matter the cost. The Prime Minister, Nikol Pashinyan, announced that Armenia will soon submit an official application to join the EU, and hopes to achieve visa abolition by 2029. The authorities are preparing a referendum.

Pashinyan also intends to amend the Constitution. They propose removing the reference to the 1990 Declaration of Independence from the new draft.

Armenia is developing transport links with Azerbaijan and demands Moscow to transfer the management of Armenian railways to a third party. Currently, "Russian Railways" manages the infrastructure. Pashinyan says it'd be a friendly gesture from Russia to Armenia.

Turkey's most successful spy does more damage to Armenia than centuries of corruption and warfare.

The Future War

The war in Ukraine continues. It's been 4 years by now. The expensive weapons are running out, so both sides downgraded to FPV drone spam.

What's so horrible about human controlled drones? That's the point - those drones become more often "AI driven" as of late. There is such thing as "machine vision" - the software has the specs of the targets it's supposed to attack. So, it's possible to send a drone - FPV sized or bigger - in the general direction of the enemy, where it will rely not on the GPS or radio waves - but on the terrain mapping software. There are already reports how the drones - bigger than FPV in size - attack civilian targets on both sides.

This will continue to escalate. It already happens in some places. The Future War is here. And it looks both lame and horrific. A cruise missile might strike a misidentified target after a human pushes the button. AI drones won't care at all, and I doubt this "bug" in their software will be fixed.

The US chief glowie landed in Moscow

CIA Director John Ratcliffe traveled to Moscow for secret talks aboard a US Air Force Boeing C-17A Globemaster III, whose identity was confirmed by flight tracking data. The C-17A landed at Vnukovo International Airport, sparking public speculation due to its size and visibility.

His talks with Russian intelligence focused on detainee exchanges, the Iranian crisis, and reducing potential miscalculations in Ukraine.

The media analysts noted that the C-17A was too visible. Videos of it flying low over Moscow went viral fast, instantly revealing the secrecy of the trip. Shortly after landing, a heavily armed American diplomatic motorcade was also filmed driving in Moscow.

Ratcliffe held direct talks with his Russian intelligence colleagues, not with Putin. However, Putin was briefed on the details once Ratcliffe left.

My schizo guess - he asked Russia to betray Iran, and go easier on Ukraine. I doubt he got what he wanted.

Fun week in Ukraine

Seems like Russia decided to go full Dust Front on Ukraine, after 4 years of a "boring" war in which nothing ever happens (except occasionally).

There is an on-going massive Russian missile and drone rain against Ukraine. Kyiv\Kiev and major regional centers are under sustained attack for the 6th day in a row.

Ukrainian authorities described the nighttime offensive as one of the most intensive drone\missile attacks of the war.

218 large drones and decoys were used, plus ballistic, cruise, and anti-radar missiles.

The precision-guided weapons included Iskander-M, KN-23, and - supposedly - S-400 ballistic missiles in "surface-to-surface" mode, Tsirkon anti-ship missiles, Kalibr cruise missiles, and Kh-31P anti-radar missiles. Russia perhaps threw the whole kitchen sink at Ukraine.

As always, Ukraine insists that most of the drones and missiles were shot down. The footage says otherwise. The biggest war in Europe since WW2 continues.

Ukrainian corporation Naftogaz used Norway to seize a Russian civilian ship

Recently Norway sent their regular policemen to seize a 71-meters long, 40-year-old Russian commercial-expedition cruise ship "Professor Molchanov".

It was detained on Wednesday in the port of Barentsburg, a Russian-owned coal mining town located on Norway's remote Arctic archipelago of Svalbard. Russia owns that place thanks to a century-long agreement about mining and settling rights in the area.

Acting on the basis of an August 31st ruling by the Nord-Troms and Senja District Court in Norway, Svalbard Governor Lars Fause intervened and legally grounded the ship, prohibiting it from leaving the pier. The Russian crew and passengers were safely sent to a local Russian hotel.

Norway insists that it only follows the court's decision. The Naftogaz is planning to sell the ship because Russia supposedly owes Naftogaz $4 billions. And Russia promised consequences to Norway for this arrest.

Dream vs Reality

Ever since Ukraine ran out of the legacy Fulcrums and Flankers - NATO have started sending F-16s to Ukraine. Officially it was presented as a yet another game changer that will splash any Russian jet in the Ukrainian sky. Officially.

In reality Ukraine received old European second-hand F-16s, which initially lacked the means to use Ukrainian missiles. And Ukraine has only a few dozen pilots capable of flying these "new" jets since the Ukrainian airmen only know how to fly Soviet planes.

Fast forward to this day. Ukraine has fewer than 39 of them by now, due to the loss of 5 F-16s to Russian missiles or technical malfunctions. Ukraine can't lose the remaining F-16s to the Russian airforce, so the pilots of the F-16s are stuck in the drone hunting duty. If the sortie conditions are perfect - they can use onboard autocannons. If not - they have to lob expensive missiles at cheap drones.

And every time the jets take off - their remaining short lifespans get shorter.

Flying radars made from civilian airliners

Ukraine has 2 Swedish ASC 890 airborne early warning and control aircraft made in the 90s. Both planes can't be in the air at once - one must be checked somewhere in Poland while the other is flying in 8-shaped patterns in order to see the Russian missiles, drones, and sometimes jets.

On paper - Ukraine has their own "eyes in the sky". Before 2025, Ukraine could only use the intel gathered by the NATO drones and E-3s flying above Poland and the Black Sea.

Both planes have 6 Ukrainian airmen that were hastily trained in Sweden to remain in a constant military grade zoom calls with the Saab's technicians, push the buttons as told, and try to not crash these two old Swedish planes. Sweden only donated those 2 old ASC 890s because Sweden has much better planes for itself - and Sweden doesn't plan to send them to Ukraine.

The effectiveness of these planes is mediocre, but they are the best Ukraine was given for this war.

Russia solidifies its hold onto the 4 new regions

Apparently 4 years ago, on September 23, 2022, referendums on joining Russia took place in the DPR, LPR, and parts of the Zaporozhye and Kherson regions. Voting continued until September 27, and on September 30 treaties were signed to fully incorporate the 4 regions into Russia.

Russia had to do a lot of repairing. Residential buildings, schools, hospitals, roads, bridges, utility facilities - all the destruction from the war must be fixed. Russia recently bragged that it fixed 1,500 various buildings in total, plus 200 should be repaired before 2026 ends.

Russia tries to win the hearts and minds of the locals with honest restoration efforts, but the biggest war in Europe since WW2 is still going on. The destructions might happen again.

Even if Russia can fully secure and protect those 4 regions - unless the war is fully over I doubt those regions will be populated as much as they were before 2022.

Nuclear desperation

Russia's govt believes that Ukraine wants to destroy the nuclear power plant in the Zaporojye region - currently under control of Russia - to use the following meltdown as a reason to accuse Russia of being incompetent when it comes to the nuclear energy matters. The long time loss of territories in Zaporojye region to the radiation is, apparently, a price Ukraine is willing to pay. Russia implies that the Western backers push this idea on Ukraine.

Russia reported that the nuclear power plant is under constant attacks from Ukraine. From the start of 2025 till this September, Ukraine did 18 multi-wave attacks, including 37 drone attacks, on the nuclear power station, the station's transport vehicles, staff, guards, and the infrastructure facilities nearby. 7 Russian staff members and servicemen were killed in such attacks in 2026.

While this sounds like nonsense - one ought to remember that Ukraine's govt is fighting for its survival. No methods are off the limits.

Ukrainian F-16s are mostly grounded

50%+ of the F-16s given to Ukraine are grounded. Ukraine now has more trained pilots than combat-ready aircraft.

The problem is simple: after every 300 flight hours, F-16s need phase inspections. The US contracted the Belgian company Sabena Aerospace Engineering to do this work under a $235.5 million program. Inspections usually take 2 to 5 weeks in the USA, and up to 40 weeks in Belgium.

Due to the shortage of new factory-made components, Ukraine has been forced to resort to cannibalizing the jets. Belgium pledged to transfer 7 F-16s in 2026, and 4 of them were designated as non-flying donor aircraft; they are being stripped for parts to keep the remaining 3 jets airworthy. By now Ukraine has around 5 F-16s that can fly sorties.

The second problem with F-16s is the ammo. It takes 150 rounds of 20mm shells to hit a drone. Ukraine needs 10,000 shells per day. Ukraine simply doesn't have them, and it affects the effectiveness of F-16s.

The Gerans.

2026 will end soon, unlike the biggest war in Europe since WW2. This time I checked the Gerans:

Geran-1 were cheap, slow, fragile, and lightweight. 15kg of explosives is barely enough to break an APC. Attacking a trench with Geran-1s is more or less useless.

Geran-2 - the meme dorito drones are so slow and loud that half of them never reached the targets. 50kg of explosives is enough to cripple a normal building, or a fortified field position. ~$30.000 per drone.

Geran-3 was a failed experiment. Fast but made from foam. The project was a lesson to Russia.

Geran-4 are made sturdy enough to fly at 500 km\h. These days they successfully ram into important targets, and special warheads make sure the targets get damaged hard. ~$90.000 per drone.

Geran-5 are cheap cruise missiles. Russia reinvented cruise missiles with drone components for ~$110.000 per unit. Very cheap by missile standards.

The Gerans have changed quite a bit. Geran-6 when?

A weird diplomatic situation between Trump and Zelensky.

Donald Trump stated that both Russia and Ukraine have already agreed on a ceasefire. Zelenskyy officially stated that this is a surprise for him. He also refused to comply with Trump's demand to halt strikes on Russian oil refineries, unless Russia promises to not attack Ukraine as well. If Trump insists - he might halt the military intelligence help for Ukraine, which will affect the war - bigly.

Later, Trump seemingly got angry from Zelensky's official reply, and demanded his resignation as well. Ukraine is now actively consulting with the EU partners.

Meanwhile back in the US of A, the Right believes that Zelensky's stubborness helps the Left in the November 3 congressional elections.

All this diplomatic nonsense aside - the biggest war in Europe since WW2 is still on-going.

About Trump, Putin, Russia, diesel, and the American interests.

According to some American, European, and Ukrainian politicians - Putin is smiling evilly as he evilly sends evil Russian diesel to the global and American fuel market to prolong his evil war against poor and innocent Ukraine - all thanks to Trump's incompetence.

In reality - Trump is simply doing his job as the current American president. Those barrels of Russian diesel can't keep the entire USA running - they will instead soften the situation, and buy some time for the USA to solve the problem long-term. Yes, it will help Russia meanwhile - that's the trade-off Trump is willing to make. And since the USA is already having a growing diesel crisis - making the situation worse for the USA won't help the EU or Ukraine long-term anyway.

All in all - this is a nothingburger. And right now the worst enemy of Ukraine is Zelensky who keeps yelling profanities at Trump. I am sure it will help Ukraine, bigly.

About a possible meeting of the "Big 3"

A tl:dr version - nothing ever happens. All 3 superpowers want different things from each other, and they all have their own agendas to push.

Trump wants to put a limit on the amount of Chinese nukes. China has some nukes, but nearly not as many as the USA and Russia - thus Xi sees no reason to talk about it in the first place.

Putin wants to speak about the issue of Ukraine among the real leaders of the world - himself and two others. Without the petty distractions from the EU and Ukraine's representatives the talks could go fast and efficient - but the USA can't simply forget or ignore the EU or Ukraine, for diplomatic reasons.

Xi wants to talk about the economy. Xi can aura farm a bit from hosting the important diplomatic talks between the USA and Russia, but Xi wants to talk about business. Xi won't discuss how many nukes China "can" have, for political reasons.

All 3 of them will be in Shenzhen, but I doubt they'll sit in that room.
