The Germans pulled off a stunner in blanking France 2-0 in a match that was highlighted by Nagelsmann’s willingness to go for the jugular right from the opening tap — and show a resilience to grind the French squad down in the second half. The only positions that were really in question were Robert Andrich vs. Pascal Groß at defensive midfielder and Maximilian Mittelstädt vs. Benjamin Henrichs at left-back.In the opening seconds of the match Florian Wirtz put Germany up 1-0 with a rocker. This was as impactful of a moment as we have seen from Wirtz with the senior team. Right from the opening tap, Toni Kroos sent a long ball to a streaking Wirtz, who took a couple of dribbles and just unleashed a laser for the early lead. Wow...what a moment for Kroos and Wirtz alike. ‍♂️ Toni Kroos with an assist just 8 seconds after his return with German national team.

No one wanted to get beat 1v1 by him. Unfortunately for Bayern Munich star Dayot Upamecano, he was probably most guilty of not stepping to Wirtz. Germany, though, did not exactly dominate from that point forward in the first half. France was pretty dominant, as the German midfield and defense really scuffled to keep up with the dangerous attack from Les Blues. İlkay Gündoğan and Kai Havertz just were not impactful in the first half. For Gündoğan, it just was not his game. He was not bad, but definitely not as active as you would like to see from your No. 10.The backline had its tough moments. Jonathan Tah and Antonio Rüdiger need a LOT of work on their partnership if this team is to make a serious run at the EUROs, but it was a decent start. The second half would be a different story — Germany looked...(gasp!)...consistently pretty good!Early in the second half, some wonderful work from Jamal Musiala led to a goal for Havertz, who really had not done anything to that point. As much as Germany was not great, France was uninterested at times. A long ball into Musiala, who was making a diagonal run, led to the Bayern Munich star cutting a pass back to an incoming Havertz, who beat Upamecano and slid the ball easily into the net. From there, Germany just looked really good. There were down moments, but this was a good reason for fans to have some hope.Overall, what can you say? International FriendlyGermany v The Netherlands Photo by ANP via Getty Images Has Julian Nagelsmann found his new left-back? Rhetorical question. Maximilian Mittelstädt is something new for Germany. The 27-year-old VfB Stuttgart left-back has broken into the squad and straight into Germany coach Julian Nagelsmann’s XI ahead of established veterans such as Leipzig’s David Raum and Union Berlin’s Robin Gosens. With his side down 1-0 early, Mittelstädt introduced himself to the home crowd with a cracking 11th minute equalizer, hit first time from range. Maximilian Mittelstadt'tan harika bir gol pic.twitter.com/C2POHXQ4RN— Sports Digitale (@SportsDigitale) March 26, 2024“As a little kid, you dream about this,” Mittelstädt said after the match (as captured by @iMiaSanMia). “I started this on Saturday and was able to continue it today. Today was my first home game for the national team – it’s just great.”Even more impressive was how quickly Mittelstädt shrugged off a setback — it had been his own mistake moments earlier that led to the early German concession.“Of course that shouldn’t happen. What was important was that I kept going and didn’t let it unsettle me. I’m glad I was able to make up for my mistake with the goal,” he added.Tenacious in the challenge as well, Mittelstädt — alongside his opposite number (Bayern Munich’s Joshua Kimmich) — is offering Germany something it has not known for years: stability at both full-back positions. And it is coming together at just the right time.1:1 Mittelstädt. #MajorTom #DFBTeam pic.twitter.com/QVM7s7y3OM— Maximilian Koch (@_kochmaximilian) March 26, 2024Looking for more thoughts and analysis on Germany’s massive 2-1 win over the Netherlands and where things might be headed under Julian Nagelsmann? Germany v Netherlands - International Friendly Photo by Boris Streubel/Getty Images After another goal vs. the Netherlands, it seems the Borussia Dortmund man is the guy that gets the job done. Borussia Dortmund striker Niclas Füllkrug played the role of super-sub in Germany’s 2-1 win over the Netherlands. With the game level heading into the final minutes, Füllkrug fought his way through a crowd of bodies and managed to head — or shoulder — the ball just over the line. While Arsenal FC striker Kai Havertz linked up impressively with his teammates, it was Füllkrug who bagged the crucial goal in the end. That, along with his clinical international record — including at the FIFA 2022 Men’s World Cup vs. Spain — has to be on manager Julian Nagelsmann’s mind heading into EURO 2024.Füllkrug already has double-digit goals despite just breaking into the team late in 2022 — as captured by @iMiaSanMia: Niclas Füllkrug for Germany15 games 6 starts 11 goals 2 assists Involved in a goal every 50 minutesThe match-winner! #DFBTeam #GERNED

With a resurgent Bayern Munich trying to make one last run at glory on the club scene, the German national team has risen from the ashes to show that it just might be a contender for the EUROs this summer. After dispatching France on Saturday, the Germans outlasted the Dutch 2-1 in a thoroughly impressive victory. Let’s not waste any more time, here are some quick hitters on the match: As always, let’s start with Julian Nagelsmann’s starting XI: The team to face Netherlands #DFBTeam #GERNED

It seems as if the coach has found an XI he likes and wants to build off of it. Joey Veerman put the Netherlands up 1-0 in the 4th minute with a perfectly placed volley just outside the reach of Marc-André ter Stegen for a quick goal. Memphis Depay sent the ball in and took advantage of some lax defending from the Germans. Germany appeared stunned for a few minutes. Like a boxer, who had taken a massive shot, Germany somehow climbed up off of the canvas and got back to work. It took a bit, but the Germans woke up in a big way. Maximilian Mittelstädt rifled a shot into the net for a goal to tie the game. What a moment it was for the VfB Stuttgart man. There was a genuine energy and life in the match for Germany after that. The Dutch were game as well, which made the contest a fantastic one to watch.Ter Stegen was a bit shaky. In the 19th minute, he nearly gifted Netherlands another good chance by tipping a ball out into danger that he should have probably handled cleanly.Germany was playing with a purpose and with some fight and pride. It was refreshing to watch.Jamal Musiala had some slipping issues. Someone needs to check those cleats! Really, though, the whole surface seemed slick for everyone and Bavarian Grass Works should investigate. The Dutch were super-aggressive with their style of play. It was almost as if they were banking on Germany eventually cracking under the pressure…but it never happened.I don’t know how Germany can remove Florian Wirtz or Jamal Musiala from the lineup. If Nagelsmann truly is intent on starting Leroy Sané, he is going to have to send his captain, İlkay Gündoğan, to the bench or go striker-less.Germany looked organized and fierce...it was really impressive. If there is a fair critique of Germany’s play, it is that there tends to be a gap behind the midfield and in front of the backline that seems to be ripe for a team to eventually expose.Germany’s press was effective and disruptive. Matthijs de Ligt sent a header across the face of the goal that probably should have resulted in a score for the Dutch. Donyell Malen could not do enough to get out on the end of it before it was cleared. The Netherlands was a little more authoritative and controlling to start the second half, but Germany rallied.Mittelstädt has added some fight and physicality to his game, which is a welcome sight. He definitely won some fans and will likely have some Bayern Munich supporters calling on him as a replacement for Alphonso Davies, should the Canadian…

Similarly, Germany boss Julian Nagelsmann will take a conservative approach with Aleksandar Pavlović and David Raum as well: Leroy Sané and Jamal Musiala had a thorough check-up in the days before traveling to the national team camp in Blankenhain. Sky Sport journalist Florian Plettenberg added more context on Sané: Leroy #Sané will train at a moderate pace this week. He aims to be 100% fit by the start of the Euros and has been training specifically for this.

Spain v Germany: Quarter-Final - UEFA EURO 2024 Photo by Alexander Hassenstein/Getty Images Bayern Munich is not well-represented any longer… Former Bayern Munich manager and current German national team boss Julian Nagelsmann announced his first roster call-up since the EURO 2024 tournament and — shockingly — only four players with current Bayern Munich ties got the nod.Goalkeeper Alexander Nübel (on loan with VfB Stuttgart), right-back Joshua Kimmich (a central midfielder these days for Bayern Munich), attacker Jamal Musiala, and central midfielder Aleksandar Pavlović were the only Bayern Munich players selected. It should be noted that Nagelsmann left Leroy Sané out due to his current health and fitness status, while Leon Goretzka and Serge Gnabry were just straight omissions. Here is the full call-up sheet as released by the DFB:Mit diesem Kader geht es in die Nations League-Spiele gegen Ungarn und die Niederlande!

Germany v Hungary -UEFA Nations league Photo by Geert van Erven/Soccrates/Getty Images What a match for Germany! Die Folgen: Germany’s 5-0 win over Hungary (Bavarian Football Works)Former Bayern Munich manager Julian Nagelsmann has the German national team absolutely humming, which is bad news for the rest of Europe. Sure, it is far too early to start making any declarations about Germany’s prowess for the World Cup, but things are looking good — very good — at the moment. The match resulted in a complete and utter dismantling of Hungary, a squad that can create problems for its opponents. Here are some quick hitters on the match: As always, let’s take a look at Nagelsmann’s starting XI: Mit dieser 11 starten wir heute gegen Ungarn #dfbteam #gerhun
DFB/Thomas Böcker pic.twitter.com/3haMcbuoKn— DFB-Team (@DFB_Team) September 7, 2024Everything went as expected. The only real spot up for debate was left-back where David Raum got the nod over Maximilian Mittelstädt. Otherwise, the manager directly addressed where he was going at the other positions on the pitch. Early on, Germany was feeling out the game and how to work best together. Hungary was active and played a frenetic pace at times, which made it hard on the Germans to get aligned.I still like Dominik Szoboszlai a lot as a player. He is a player who can impact games in such a positive way. Germany had a really nice sequence in the 21st minute that went from Florian Wirtz to Jamal Musiala to Niclas Füllkrug, but the West Ham United man just did not get a good piece of the ball on his shot attempt, which ended up being a semi-hard groundball right at the goalkeeper. Füllkrug knows he has to do better with that attempt. Musiala and Wirtz really could be special together. At times, there was a certain panache to the German game. In the 27th minute, Füllkrug would make up for it...this time, ensuring Musiala got the assist. The play went from Wirtz to Raum to Musiala to Füllkrug — and Nagelsmann really might be onto something with Wirtz and Musiala playing in the half-spaces with the flexibility to roam. In the 57th minute, Musiala somehow outfoxed two defenders and the goalkeeper to make it 2-0. A long through-ball from Wirtz sent in Musiala, whose touch almost betrayed him, but the crafty youngster found a way to gather the ball and himself to rifle in a near post shot that seemed to shock Hungary goalkeeper Péter Gulácsi.Just nine minutes later Wirtz added a goal of his own to make it 3-0. The German attacking group was a problem for Hungary. Musiala added the assist and somewhere, the Bayern Munich brass just start transferring funds into an undisclosed account to start preparing for the 2025 summer transfer window. This was exactly the kind of performance from Musiala that keeps Bayern Munich fans believing that when Musiala inevitably puts it all together, there will be a lot of pain in the future for the club’s opponents. Unfortunately, it is also the kind of performance that will help convince clubs like Manchester City, Liverpool FC, FC Barcelona, and Real Madrid that Musiala is just the kind of player worth emptying your coffers for. Despite being subbed out relatively early for Aleksandar Pavlović, Pascal Groß turned in a nice shift for Germany. Marc-André ter Stegen did not get much action, but did well in stepping up in his new role. It might seem weird to say in a shutout, but the Germany backline needs some work (especially at the center-back position). Nico Schlotterbeck and Jonathan Tah were...okay. Against better teams, they will need to be a lot, well, better. That said, it was progress and that is the most important thing at this stage. In the 77th minute, the “Musiala-Wirtz Show” struck again as the due combined to set up Pavlović for a goal. Musiala picked up his third assist and Germany led 4-0. Meanwhile, Gulácsi will not want to remember much about this game. Germany was just absolutely pouring it on. In the 81st minute, Kai Havertz added a PK to make it 5-0 and the Nagelsmann Era might really be hitting…

FC Bayern Munich Training Session Photo by S. Mellar/FC Bayern via Getty Images After a busy 2023/24, the ultra-talented winger has yet to get going this season... One big omission from Germany’s October call-ups to the men’s national team? Bayern Munich star winger Leroy Sané.The 28-year-old is downright unplayable on his day, but after running himself into the ground last season under Thomas Tuchel, Sané is still working his way back to full fitness. Once he does that, his way back to Julian Nagelsmann’s squad should be clear — according to a report from Az journalist Maximilian Koch:Leroy Sané steht weiter in gutem, regelmäßigen Kontakt zu Bundestrainer Julian Nagelsmann. Germany v Netherlands - UEFA Nations League 2024/25 League A Group A3 Photo by Stefan Matzke - sampics/Getty Images Is it Leon Goretzka’s time to shine? Former Bayern Munich player Angelo Stiller has had a growing role in each game for Germany, since his first appearance in September. The Stuttgart midfielder played a large part in Germany’s win over the Dutch in Munich and is now considered a possible starting midfielder going forward. Unfortunately, that role will now be postponed as Stiller has left the German camp due to an injury. The DFB reported that Stiller has left the team after muscular issues and will miss both the games in the November window. This is a major loss for Germany as there is no clear stability in midfield for the national team since the key retirements this past summer.Kader-Update ℹ️

Julian Nagelsmann has already confirmed that there will be no replacement for Stiller. Germany v Bosnia and Herzegovina - UEFA Nations League 2024/25 League A Group A3 Photo by Alex Grimm/Getty Images Germany is playing incredibly well right now... Die Folgen: Germany’s 7-0 win over Bosnia and Herzegovina (Bavarian Football Works)Germany wasted no time in establishing firm control of its UEFA Nations League showdown with Bosnia and Herzegovina as Bayern Munich’s Jamal Musiala got the scoring party started just two minutes into the match. It would be the first of seven goals, but the dominant effort was about more than just scoring for the Germans as Julian Nagelsmann might really be building a monster. Let’s dig into this, here are some quick hitters on the match: Mit dieser 1️⃣1️⃣ starten wir gegen Bosnien und Herzegowina! #dfbteam #gerbih
DFB/Thomas Böcker pic.twitter.com/o4n6ENVPmy— DFB-Team (@DFB_Team) November 16, 2024This was pretty much as expected. The only real variable was whether or not Tim Kleindienst would get the nod...he did (and he would make Julian Nagelsmann look smart). In the 2nd minute, Germany struck out to an early lead behind a goal from Jamal Musiala, which was set up by Joshua Kimmich. Kimmich’s cross met the head of Musiala (yup, another header!) for the very early lead. Germany had really asserted itself and taken full control of the match (as expected). In dominating possession and shots, there was very little chance for Bosnia and Herzegovina to do much of anything. While Robert Andrich and Pascal Groß are likely not the first choice midfielders any longer, they did well to help the German national team keep the game in hand. In the 23rd minute, Kleindienst re-directed what looked like a shot attempt from Andrich to make it 2-0. It was a cheeky, little flick from the Gladbach man. The German backline was rarely tested. In the 37th minute, Kai Havertz and Florian Wirtz worked a neat combination, which led to Wirtz setting up Havertz perfectly for a 3-0 lead. Germany was just absolutely having its way with Bosnia and Herzegovina. For Wirtz, who was excellent on the day, it was the first of quite a few dazzling plays. In the 50th minute, Wirtz teed up a perfect free kick, which he aptly described by saying, “I had never hit it like that.” Amen, brother.Just seven minutes later, Wirtz added another goal and Nagelsmann could unload quite a few players from his bench, including Benjamin Henrichs, Felix Nmecha, Leroy Sané, and Serge Gnabry.Sané and Kliendienst would go on to each add a goal and Germany walked away with an easy victory.Kimmich was subbed out in the 73rd minute due to an injury scare, but he appears to be alright. Let’s not pretend that this version of Germany just whacked France or England by seven goals, but it was still damn impressive. Nagelsmann has this team rolling and they look extremely confident and comfortable playing together. It is a somewhat controversial topic, but Musiala and Wirtz playing together really might be too enticing to pass up for Bayern Munich. Those two are the engine that makes everything with this Germany team move forward. Overall, it is impossible to come away with many negative takeaways. Germany looks like a machine and is making steady progress under Nagelsmann. Dare I say...Nagelsmann might really have “the touch” for this team.If you missed our Initial Analysis, Match Awards, Observations, or Postgame Podcast, give them a look or a listen: Price on Šeško becoming more clear (@Plettigoal)Benjamin Šeško and RB Leipzig have a “gentleman’s agreement” and not necessarily a release clause in place when it comes time for the Slovenian to make an exit: We cannot confirm the report about a €90m release clause for RB Leipzig’s Benjamin #Šeško next summer ❌

Goretzka, Karim Adeyemi, Nadiem Amiri, and Jonathan Burkhardt were some of the names who made returns, while Yann Aurel Bisseck earned his first selection.Kimmich is listed under the defenders, which means he is likely going to play right-back.The center-forward position is the least experienced group, but will likely be vital against Italy given the absence of attacking midfielder / wide forward Florian Wirtz, who contributed a lot to the team’s offensive creativity and production.Nübel might get his chance to run with a starting job if things go as planned. Given Serge Gnabry’s lack of consistent playing time and uneven performances, it was not a shock to see him dropped. What do you think of the squad? In addition, Nübel, Goretzka, Pavlović, Gnabry, and Sané were not exactly certainties to be called either after seasons filled with peaks and valleys. Regardless, Bayern Munich is well-represented. Perhaps the biggest surprise on the roster is FC Barcelona goalkeeper Marc-André ter Stegen, who has only played two games since mid-September due to a major patellar tendon rupture. It appears that Ter Stegen’s recent appearances for FC Barcelona on May 3rd and May 18th were enough to convince Nagelsmann. Otherwise, Nagelsmann used the maximum number of 26 for his roster and appears to have attempted to take as many positionally-versatile players as possible to help with depth and tactical flexibility. Germany v Italy - UEFA Nations League Quarterfinal Leg Two Photo by Mika Volkmann/Getty Images A replacement has been named for the key Stuttgart midfielder. Former Bayern Munich midfielder has quickly emerged and cemented himself as one of the brightest young midfielders in Europe. On a rollercoaster year for VfB Stuttgart, Stiller has been the consistent piece of a revolving puzzle, putting in performance after performance for the club. His talent was recognized by Julian Nagelsmann and has became a key piece of the German national team as well. Unfortunately for Nagelsmann, he will have to go without Stiller this time out.The DFB reports that Angelo Stiller will miss the Nations League Final Four due to a lingering issue with his ankle, despite making an appearance in the DFB-Pokal. His DFB-Pokal victory was just one display of his skill, where he dominated, setting up goal after goal for his side.ℹ️ Final 4 Kader-Update

Angelo Stiller kann wegen einer noch nicht ganz ausgeheilten Bänderverletzung am Sprunggelenk nicht anreisen. Gute Besserung! ❤️

Get well soon! ❤️ National coach Julian Nagelsmann has nominated Jonathan Burkardt.#dfbteam DFB/Philipp ReinhardIn his place, Nagelsmann has nominated returning player Jonathan Burkardt. The Mainz 05 forward has been dominant in the Bundesliga this season, with 18 goals in 29 matches. However, this has not quite translated with the national team so far, where he seemed out of his element against Italy in the last international window. With several striker options, it is not certain that Burkardt will see the field in the upcoming fixtures, but he certainly has something to prove this time out. Can Germany overcome the long list of injuries to acquire their first Nations League title?Looking for some final thoughts on the Florian Wirtz saga? What about a conversation with one of our BPW staffers who actually spoke to Wirtz?
