FC Bayern München v Hertha BSC - BundesligaPhoto by Boris Streubel/Getty ImagesOkay, maybe that headline is a bit of an exaggeration — but he’s pretty close.Welcome to Bavarian Football Works. Today we will be bringing you your regularly scheduled dose of Thomas Muller propaganda. The Bayern Munich star is perhaps one of the most intelligent players in the game at the moment, having built a glittering career out of nothing but excellent positioning and savant-like spatial awareness. Most coaches love him, and the few that don’t ... well, they tend to get fired sooner rather than later. For now, it seems that Julian Nagelsmann falls into that former category, which is good news for his career prospects. In a quote captured by TZ journalist Manuel Bonke, the 34-year-old coaching prodigy raves about the coaching prowess of his star player:Julian #Nagelsmann schwärmt von #FCBayern-Spielertrainer Thomas #Müller: „Er kann unsere Vorgaben als verlängerter Arm unglaublich intelligent umsetzen. He can implement our instructions incredibly intelligently as an extended arm. He has the gift of coaching. In a very pleasant way: Not lecturing, but often with a good joke behind it.”This isn’t the first time a coach has said this about Muller. It’s almost word-for-word what Hansi Flick said about him last year, back when the team was busy winning every trophy in sight. Nagelsmann clearly paid attention to those interviews, because he’s telling us what we want to hear. For any player that thrives on their game-intelligence, this has to be the highest compliment you could ever receive. Muller has now been declared de-facto assistant coach by two consecutive Bayern Munich coaches now, both of whom are renowned for their tactical acumen. That a single player could hold this kind of esteem among his trainers speaks to his incredibly unique gift — a tremendous footballing brain that is possibly one of the greatest in the sport. As an unashamed fanboy of Muller, I can’t wait to see him go into coaching one day. He’s played for some of the greatest minds in coaching throughout his career — guys like Louis van Gaal, Jupp Heynckes, Pep Guardiola, Hansi Flick, and now Julian Nagelsmann (legacy pending on that last one). Imagine Muller on the Bayern touchline, barking orders at the next generation of Bavarian stars. If Nagelsmann is to be believed, he might be very good at it.

FC Bayern München v 1. FSV Mainz 05 - BundesligaPhoto by Stefan Matzke - sampics/Corbis via Getty ImagesAt least one of Bayern Munich’s three key veterans is getting close to an extension. While Bayern Munich has been busy working up contract extensions for its young stars, three vital veterans have lingered in the background.Manuel Neuer, Robert Lewandowski, and Thomas Müller will all see their respective contracts expire 2023, but the circumstances around each player’s situation for a contract extension is a bit different. For Neuer, the goalkeeper and captain is having positive talks with the club and things are said to be positive per Sky reporter Florian Plettenberg. For Müller, the veteran is not in a hurry to initiate discussions. It appears that neither side is in a rush to engage in talks that would appear to be a formality on the surface. As for Lewandowski, the Polish Hitman had not had any talks with the club. As we saw on Tuesday night, there could be a big, Norwegian reason for that.Update #Lewandowski: No concrete talks with his agent actually. ||| #Müller: No hurry for both sides. No talks. ||| #Neuer: Talks are ongoing and very positive. He will extend. @SkySportNews #FCBayern— Florian Plettenberg (@Plettigoal) January 11, 2022It is probably safe to assume that Bayern Munch will engage with Lewandowski in the coming weeks and perhaps even reach a deal with Neuer by the end of the season. For Müller, however, it would not be shocking to see his talks not commence until next season.

Ajax v Bayern Munchen - UEFA Champions LeaguePhoto by Erwin Spek/Soccrates/Getty ImagesBayern Munich star Thomas Müller suffered a slight scare at training this morning when he was spotted limping off the pitch before seeking seeking treatment.According to Sport1, Müller was bandaged up and given ice for his knock:Thomas Müller has apparently injured himself. The offensive player limped after a game with a painful face on Tuesday and had to be treated with ice and bandaged, among other things.Okay, so there is not a ton of detail there, but Sport1 does not seem to think it was too serious:Then Müller didn’t run much further and went into the dressing room. After all, the national player still signed autographs and his gait no longer looked as out of round as it did at first.Sport1’s photo of the treatment was included in the German outlet’s tweet:Müller-Schmerzen im Training. #FCBayern #Müller https://t.co/cxIvmfwvaM— SPORT1 (@SPORT1) April 19, 2022Our own Teddy Son watched the training session and had this assessment:I watched the training session, and I don’t think it’s serious. He got tackled hard by (Tanguy) Nianzou (who else?) and had to be treated briefly, but he wasn’t really limping afterwards. The remainder of the session that he missed wasn’t even that major, there were only like eight players taking part in 3-on-3s. Müller even signed some autographs after coming back out, so I don’t think it’s anything to lose sleep over. I hope.Should any additional information drop on the extent of the injury, we will update this post.Bayern Munich faces Borussia Dortmund on Saturday.

FC Bayern München v Borussia Mönchengladbach - BundesligaPhoto by Harry Langer/DeFodi Images via Getty ImagesAfter two disappointing exits from the German Cup, Bayern are looking for a more successful run.Bayern Munich always wants to obtain as many trophies as possible each season. However, the DFB-Pokal has become a source of pain for the Bavarian giants for the last two years. Early exits in back-to-back seasons left Bayern Munich fans gutted after two brutal exits from the tournament...but all of that could change for this campaign. Ich freue mich auf Mittwoch.“ @esmuellert_ #FCBayern #DFBPokal pic.twitter.com/5CrNxU1ZyK— Maximilian Koch (@Koch_AZ) August 29, 2022Bayern Munich certainly don’t like to lose, so players are keen on changing their ways in the German cup. Thomas Müller commented on the upcoming Pokal season and talked about just how excited they are to have a strong run this season. “After we had nothing to do with winning the cup for two years, we definitely want to get back to the final. I’m looking forward to Wednesday,” explained Muller.RB Leipzig won the Pokal for the first time ever last season, and Bayern Munich will want to re-establish their dominance in the Pokal for an all-around domination in Germany. Bayern Munich begin their journey for the Pokal on Wednesday against Viktoria Koln.

FC Bayern München v VfL Bochum 1848 - BundesligaPhoto by Adam Pretty/Getty ImagesWell, this is just deeply concerning. Let’s hope it’s as mild as claimed.Well, this news is extremely worrisome. As reported by Maximillian Koch on Twitter, Thomas Muller said he was apparently subbed off due to a mild “calf discomfort” during Bayern Munich’s 3-0 win over VfL Bochum. The 33-year-old seemed to be moving just fine when he scored the opening goal in the first half, but did not come out for the second as Alphonso Davies was subbed in as a replacement.Apparently, this was not a planned substitution, according to the player himself.#Müller über die Auswechslung zur Halbzeit: „Ich war leicht angeschlagen an der Wade, aber es ist nichts Schlimmes.“ #FCBayern @esmuellert_— Maximilian Koch (@_kochmaximilian) February 11, 2023#Müller on the substitution at half-time: “I was slightly hurt in the calf, but it’s nothing serious.”Let’s hope we can take his word for it. This isn’t the first time calf problems have troubled Muller this campaign — he had to be subbed off early in a game vs Viktoria Plzen back in the Hinrunde for the same reason. That was also considered a precautionary measure, but Muller ended up not playing again all the way until the World Cup.If this is anything like that incident, then Bayern Munich may have a serious problem coming up against PSG in the Champions League next week. While the Parisians have their fair share of injuries — Kylian Mbappe is supposedly ruled out of the starting XI and Messi may be doubtful — losing Muller represents a massive blow to the tactical and leadership setup at Bayern that cannot be offset by any other player. While Jamal Musiala offers almost as much in terms of goals and assists, no one can replicate what Muller does in terms of positioning and dictating the play.Let’s hope he’s alright and a day of rest will fix him up.Interested in more discussion about the game? FC Bayern München v Borussia Dortmund - BundesligaPhoto by Alexander Hassenstein/Getty ImagesIn his debut game as head coach of Bayern Munich, Thomas Tuchel lined up the team in the classic formation in which it has played for years. After Bayern Munich dismantled and dominated Borussia Dortmund, at one point leading 4-0, before I conceding two second-half goals, Thomas Tuchel explained his decision to line up the team in a formation that is undoubtedly familiar to both the players and fans: a classic 4-2-3-1, with Thomas Müller at the heart of the offense.Tuchel said after the game (via @iMiaSanMia), “I had a lot of conversations with the players, but not about the formation. Our idea was to put the players in the positions where we think they’re comfortable. The acceptance was definitely there.”Thomas Müller echoed that same sentiment in his own post-game remarks.️ Thomas #Müller: „Wir haben im Topspiel bestanden. Wir müssen dem Trainer wieder gut zuhören in den ein, zwei Sitzungen, die er hat. Es geht ums kennenlernen und um Details. Für dieses Spiel hat er unsere klare Positionierung aufgezeigt. Wir haben uns wohlgefühlt.“ #fcbayern pic.twitter.com/4mhEfhWpqu— Georg Holzner (@georg_holzner) April 1, 2023️ Thomas #Müller : “We prevailed in the top game. We need to listen carefully to the coach again in the one or two sessions he has. It’s about getting to know each other and details. He showed our clear positioning for this game. We felt comfortable.”Central midfielder Joshua Kimmich also discussed the team’s formation (Tz):“We actually didn’t want to make the game so wild and press higher, but we didn’t pull it off. We had to run back a few times. We have to control the game better, though, and get more quiet phases into the game. Every time after winning the ball, the space behind the defense always felt big. We played a somewhat different system today, 4-2-3-1. [Tuchel] did that well, he tried to find a system in which we could find our strengths on the pitch.”Tuchel himself likewise emphasized the team’s need to calm the game, but he is confident that the players will become even more dominant. He said (via @iMiaSanMia), “We still have to find our rhythm and improve the automatisms, understand when to go forward, when to prepare an attack. Things were a bit hectic, but everything that a coach wants is definitely there, the quality is there. With time and rhythm, we’ll improve our dominance.”Interested in a more in-depth look at the game? Curious about why Thomas Tuchel chose a 4-2-3-1? How did it differ from Nagelsmann’s Bayern? We talk about all that and more in our postgame podcast. Listen to it below or at this link.As always, we appreciate all the support!

FC Bayern Muenchen v FC Augsburg - Bundesliga Photo by M. Donato/FC Bayern via Getty Images Funny how he didn’t mention Toni Kroos, huh. Speaking to the media after the 6-0 win over Schalke, Bayern Munich star Thomas Muller was asked by kicker about the ongoing Champions League semi-final between Real Madrid and Manchester City. Both teams drew 1-1 in the first leg, leaving it all to play for at the Etihad this coming week. Muller, who was seen “advising” Thomas Tuchel on the sidelines during Bayern Munich’s CL quarter-final games versus Man City, said he backs Madrid on a personal level. Wird ein top Rückspiel.“ #rmalive #rma— Georg Holzner (@georg_holzner) May 13, 2023Thomas #Müller on the semi-final between #Real and #ManCity : “On a personal level (also because of #Alaba ) I’m more with Real. In terms of football, I find both teams really great, the way they shape the game. Nice to look at. Will be a top second leg.”Funny how he didn’t mention Toni Kroos. Given how balanced the two teams look after the first leg, it’s hard to disagree with Muller’s assessment here. Of course, you should never rule out Madrid in a Champions League knockout — they own that competition. City may have beaten Bayern 4-1 on aggregate this year, but they were helped along by some awful mistakes on the part of the Bayern players and coaching staff. Madrid are rarely ever so accommodating. It’s sad that, for a third consecutive season, we won’t see Bayern Munich competing at the very upper echelons of the UEFA Champions League. A proper knockout stage clash with Real Madrid is long overdue. Oh well, maybe next season will go better.

The good news is that there is nothing certain (at this stage) regarding why Matthijs de Ligt and Dayot Upamecano missed training, so (optimistically), fans can hope it was all precautionary. Sky Sport journalist Thorben Hoffmann tweeted the initial report (as captured by @iMiaSanMia): Third training session in Faro is underway. Matthijs de Ligt and Dayot Upamecano are not training with the team, apparently both are carrying discomfort. There’s no exact diagnosis yet.Germany outlet kicker (as captured by @iMiaSanMia) provided addition detail: The club didn’t provide a reason to De Ligt and Upamecano’s absence in training today. The Dutchman briefly laid down on the ground in yesterday’s afternoon session after a challenge in the final practice match, but was able to continue. It’s unclear whether his absence could have something to do with that.As we would later find out, De Ligt has a capsular injury in his knee and has been ruled out, though a release on FCBayern.com did not specify a timeline for his return: Matthijs de Ligt has suffered a capsular injury in his left knee during the training camp in Faro, Portugal. The diagnosis was confirmed by FC Bayern’s medical department following an MRI scan there. The defender will therefore not be able to train for now.It can be assumed that De Ligt is probably out for this weekend’s match (though it is not definite), but Upamecano’s status is still uncertain. If one or — (gulp!) both — players are hurt, this could be a baptism by fire for Eric Dier against Werder Bremen. Well...maybe notSpeaking of Dier, he left camp due to the imminent birth of his child per FCBayern.com: New signing Eric Dier is also leaving the training camp this Tuesday as the birth of his first child is imminent.Freund joins the squadAfter initially staying back in Germany to work on transfer, kicker is reporting that sporting director Christoph Freund has traveled to Portugal to meet up with the team (as captured by @iMiaSanMia): Christoph Freund will join the team in Portugal this evening.
