Bayern München II v VfB Luebeck - 3. LigaPhoto by Roland Krivec/DeFodi Images via Getty ImagesIt looks like Josip Stanisic has impressed his bosses.Bayern Munich has a strong corps of young defenders on campus and out on loan.Tanguy Nianzou, Chris Richards, Lars Lukas Mai, Jamie Lawrence, Bright Arrey-Mbi, Remy Vita, and potentially FC Dallas loanee Justin Che are just a few of the names that are often bandied about by fans when looking at Bayern Munich’s future on the backline. One player who has not gotten as much acclaim as some of those names above, but who must be impressing his bosses,is Josip Stanisic.Stansic was called up to the first-team to play a role against Union Berlin was very good during that match. Now, it appears that the Bavarians are eager to show some commitment to the developing 21-year-old. #FCBayern— Maximilian Koch (@Koch_AZ) April 22, 2021On with a youngster: the expiring contract of Josip #Stanisic (21) is to be extended, the latest development pleases both the player side and @FCBayern. Talks are underway. Stanisic last came on for 90 minutes vs. @fcunion as LB. #FCBayernWith Stanisic’s ability to play both center-back and either outside-back position, the youngster offers Bayern Munich great versatility. The rumored signing of Reading FC defender Omar Richards will add yet another body into that mix of young defenders if that comes to fruition as well.It will be interesting to see what happens with Bayern Munich’s defensive depth heading into next season. There will surely be some player movement via sales or loans — along with ensuring that Bayern Munich II has enough quality to make a strong showing in 2021/2022.

1. FC Union Berlin v FC Bayern München - BundesligaPhoto by Boris Streubel/Getty ImagesDuring FC Bayern’s match vs Union Berlin, Lucas Hernandez appeared to have been substituted off with what appears to be an injury during the second half.Update 12:17PM ESTBayern Munich interim coach Dino Toppmöller shed some light on what happened with injured defender Lucas Hernandez (as captured by Bild reporter Philipp Kessler):#Toppmöller über die Verletzung von Lucas #Hernandez: "Er hat einen Schlag unterhalb vom Knie abbekommen. Wir hoffen, dass er am Dienstag wieder dabei sein kann." #FCBayern— Philipp Kessler (@kessler_philipp) October 30, 2021#Toppmöller about the injury to Lucas #Hernandez : “He was hit below the knee. We hope that he can be back on Tuesday.”#FCBayernAs part of a triple substitution by Bayern Munich, center-back Lucas Hernandez was one of the players removed from the match.Prior to the substitution, Hernandez was playing with no visible discomfort, however, upon watching the match sporting director Hasan “Brazzo” Salihamidžić’s reaction seemed to be indicating that something may, in fact, be off with the star Frenchman. As Hernandez walked to the sideline, Brazzo’s face showed some visible concern. The two men had a verbal exchange and Salihamidzic slapped the overhang in the bench area in frustration. The moment was captured on the ESPN feed.Triple sub for Bayern

Stanišić runs down the ball during a match against DC United.Photo by Rob Carr/Getty ImagesJosip Stanišić is ready to play, but will it be at Bayern Munich?Bayern Munich defender Josip Stanišić is a versatile, jack-of-all-trades type who can fill in at any spot along Julian Nagelsmann’s back-four. In addition, Stanišić can also play as a defensive midfielder if needed. Where exactly he’ll play, how often, and for what team — these are now the questions facing him as the transfer window winds down.Truly, the Croatian international is a valuable player to have on a roster. The problem for Bayern Munich, however, is that Stanišić is still just 22-years-old and badly needs game time that might be hard to find in Bavaria. With that, several Bundesliga and English Premier League clubs have inquired about Stanišić, per Sky’s Florian Plettenberg:Update #Stanisic: He is likely to stay in summer but he has loan options in the Premier League and from the Bundesliga. Player is still motivated and optimistic to get minutes. @SkySportDE— Florian Plettenberg (@Plettigoal) August 17, 2022German outlet kicker acknowledged the interest from Premier League and Bundesliga clubs, but insisted that Bayern Munich will not let the defender go.The Croatian international earned a measure of global acclaim by stifling Paris Saint-Germain mega-star Kylian Mbappé in a UEFA Nations League game against France back in June.“His pace is well known, so as a defender you have to keep your distance because when he’s gone you can’t catch up,” Stanisic told kicker at the time (as captured by One Football). “I tried to defend smartly, which worked well. I’m up against quick players like Kingsley Coman in training. I knew what I had to do.”That performance opened many eyes, but can any of them convince Bayern Munich to let the Croatian leave this season on a loan or a transfer?

They’re very brave. It’s a 1v1 all over the pitch at times. They’ve scored a lot on the counterattack, crosses and set pieces. They are the 8th best team in the second half of the season. We want to play our game,” said Tuchel (as captured by @iMiaSanMia).With Dayot Upamecano fully healthy once again, Tuchel will have a tough call to make on how to align his defense. Per the norm, Tuchel did not give any hints on how that might play out. “Matthijs de Ligt and Benjamin Pavard did well. Benji did well at centre-back, Noussair Mazraoui was good in Bremen. Dayot Upamecano played well before that and only had two mistakes against City. We’ll make a very late decision tomorrow,” Tuchel noted. “(Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting) is not available yet, as is Josip Stanišić. Alphonso Davies is still out. Leon Goretzka and Dayot Upamecano are returning tomorrow.”As Tuchel noted, Goretzka will be back in the squad, but the coach did not state if that would bump Ryan Gravenberch from the starting XI. “He did well (against Bremen) - he waited a long time for his chance. He is hard-working, good with the ball and carries it well through the midfield,” said Tuchel. Finally, when asked if Leroy Sané would replace Sadio Mané in the starting lineup, Tuchel played coy. “Everything is possible. Leroy did well and scored a very nice goal. But not every goal guarantees a starting spot. With Sadio, we’re all waiting a bit for the breakthrough. For me it seems it’s about to come. We’re spoilt for choice,” Tuchel said. Some of the photos that emerged from training tell the tale of what is happening with Bayern Munich’s injured players:Choupo-Moting kann das Abschlusstraining vor #FCBS04 nicht voll mit dem Team durchziehen, trainiert zum Ende wieder individuell. Bayer 04 Leverkusen v Qarabag FK: Group H - UEFA Europa League 2023/24 Photo by Christof Koepsel/Getty Images It was worth a shot, eh? According to Sky Sport journalist Florian Plettenberg, Bayern Munich put in a request to bring back Josip Stanišić early from his loan to Bayer Leverkusen. However, Die Werkself is not so keen on the idea and has let Bayern Munich know that the move is not given to happen given the club’s upcoming losses of defenders Odilon Kossounou and Edmond Tapsoba: News Josip #Stanisic: FC Bayern would like to terminate the loan in the winter and bring him back early. However, it’s nearly impossible and Bayern is informed about it. ➡️ Leverkusen is pleased with his performances and needs him to replace Kossounou & Tapsoba because both of them will be at the African Cup of Nations. The loan for Stanišić has been a mixed bag, so far. When given the opportunity, the Croatian has excelled on the pitch, but those chances have not been as frequent as he would like. However, Bayer Leverkusen likely has always had a slow ramp for Stanišić in mind given its upcoming personnel losses. Stanišić will eventually get his opportunity to prove his mettle and showcase his talents. For Bayern Munich, Stanišić would have come in extremely handy as a defensive midfielder, center-back, and outside-back during this Hinrunde, but that is all water under the bridge at this point.

FC Bayern München v 1. FC Union Berlin - Bundesliga Photo by Sebastian Widmann/Getty Images Bayern Munich will be getting some key players back in the fold... Bayern Munich’s first half of the season has seen several injuries to key players limit Vincent Kompany’s roster choices. One of the problems with that has been the unclear timetables for respective returns to the squad for each player. Now, though, it appears that there is more clarity for at least a few of them.According to Sky Sport journalist Florian Plettenberg provided an update on Aleksandar Pavlović and Josip Stanišić: If everything goes as planned, Aleksandar #Pavlovic will be back in the squad on Saturday against Heidenheim after his collarbone surgery.Josip #Stanisic is expected to rejoin team training later this month following his lateral ligament tear in his right knee, according to the current plan. In January 2025, at the start of the second half of the season, he aims to be fully fit again.Meanwhile, João Palhinha has a timeline — one that will see him return in 2025 (per Bild via @iMiaSanMia): Although he resumed running on the pitch, João Palhinha is still several weeks away from returning with the team. His return to team training is currently planned for the first session of the new year on January 2nd. By Christmas, Palhinha will gradually get back into competition shape with individual training.Looking to catch-up on all of the weekend action in the Bundesliga? FC Bayern Munich vs Celtic FC - UEFA Champions League Photo credit should read Oryk Haist / GocherImagery/Future Publishing via Getty Images This club is allergic to making good decisions Bayern Munich has had its fair share of terrible decisions over the years, but their most recent one gives the worst a run for the money: the club wants to sell Sacha Boey per Sky Sport journalist Florian Plettenberg:Sacha #Boey could leave FC Bayern as early as this summer. If a suitable offer is made, the club are open to discussions. The 24-y/o right-back has not yet established himself as a regular starter. His contract runs until 2028.For the right-back position next season, Josip #Stanisic and Konrad #Laimer are expected to be the club’s main priorities.Sport Bild (via @iMiaSanMia) backed up the report from Plettenberg: @SPORTBILD confirms @Plettigoal/Sky’s report that Sacha Boey is a candidate for sale in the summer should a suitable offer come in for him. Instead, Bayern would rely on Josip Stanišić and Konrad Laimer as right-back options next season. Boey has had to deal with numerous injuries and wasn’t able to establish himself in the team, which is why the club is ready to move him onAfter rumors that João Palhinha is on the chopping block (hours after head coach Vincent Kompany labelled the midfield as a weakness of the team), this is just another decision that really makes you think if the board is all there. Yeah, Josip Stanišić can be the starting right-back at some point but he can’t be overplayed because what if he gets injured? His record isn’t the greatest. Konrad Laimer isn’t a right-back—he won’t be effective all the time—and Joshua Kimmich is in limbo with his contract talks at a dead end. Don’t even begin to suggest Raphaël Guerreiro. Apart from Kimmich and Stani, who else is a true-right back in this team?If Hiroki Ito is being given chances after such a lengthy layout, then why can’t the club do the same for Boey? He is a top-class right back when fit, even during his time at Galatasaray— you saw what he did against Bayern in the Champions League a couple seasons ago. This is in no way slating Ito, but it’s not fair by the club. They want to save up on wages? There are other players who contribute way less than an injured Boey—mind you—who earn more than him.

Just prior to Bayern Munich’s 4-0 victory over Heidenheim, an interesting report dropped from Sky Sport journalist Florian Plettenberg, who stated that defender Josip Stanišić will be viewed as a center-back for next season: As previously revealed: Josip #Stanisic is being considered by FC Bayern as a centre-back option for next season.Today, he starts as the left-sided centre-back alongside Eric Dier in Heidenheim. The big question moving forward for Bayern Munich on Stanišić now appears to be closer to an answer. If true, Stanišić can start to laser in on preparing for 2025/26 as a center-back, but should Bayern Munich make him the fulltime starter at right back, continue the plan to use him at center-back ,or just keep him as a Swiss Army Knife-type player who gets a lot of playing time across all backline positions, but who also does not have a true starting role?Decisions, decisions...Looking for more thoughts and analysis on Bayern Munich’s 4-0 win over Heidenheim in the Bundesliga?
