🔹 Explaining Verses of Surah Āl-‘Imrān through the Teachings of Ahl al-Bayt (peace be upon them) 🔹 The interpretation of the verses of Surah Āl-‘Imrān, through the lens of the Ahl al-Bayt (AS), reveals the profound philosophy of divine trials, purification…
In continuation of the exposition of Surah Āl-‘Imrān through the words of the Ahl al-Bayt (peace be upon them), verse 146 also holds profound insights when viewed through a wilāyah- and Mahdawī-oriented lens:
🔹 Verse 146:
🌟 Interpretation through the Ahl al-Bayt (a):
Imam al-Ṣādiq (a) said in the Ziyārah of the martyrs of Karbala:
He also said:
🔍 Mahdawī Reflections:
This verse, along with the related narrations, offers vital lessons in the realm of Intiẓār (true awaiting) and preparation for the reappearance of Imām al-Mahdī (aj):
1. ✊ The “Rabbiyyūn” of Today Are the Companions of the Mahdī:
The godly men who fought alongside prophets are archetypes for the future companions of the Imām of our time—those steadfast, unwavering believers who resist defeat and surrender on the path of Truth.
2.🛡️ The Ḥusaynī Companions as Models for the Mahdawī Soldiers:
Imam al-Ṣādiq (a) identified the martyrs of Karbala as examples of this verse. Thus, the helpers of Imām al-Mahdī (aj) must mirror the virtues of Karbala’s martyrs—endurance, unshakable faith, and refusal to yield.
3. 🌱 A Call to Cultivate the ‘Rabbiyyūn of the End Times’:
This verse inspires us to nurture a new generation of believers who—through faith, patience, and spiritual awareness—can rise to the level of the companions of prophets and the martyrs of Karbala to join the ranks of Imām al-Mahdī (aj).
📝 Conclusion:
This verse, illuminated by the insights of the Ahl al-Bayt (a), traces a clear line from the divine revolutions of past prophets to the global uprising of the Awaited Saviour. The shared essence of all these struggles is jihad, patience, and resistance, and the true Shī‘a al-Muntaẓir (awaiting Shia) must cultivate these virtues to be worthy of joining the army of Divine Justice.

🌟 Interpretation through the Ahl al-Bayt (a):
Imam al-Ṣādiq (a) said in the Ziyārah of the martyrs of Karbala:

🌿 The Quranic Warning Against Apostasy After the Prophet ﷺ 📖 A Deep Reflection on Surah Āl ʿImrān, Verse 144 "Muhammad is but a Messenger; messengers have passed away before him. If he dies or is slain, will you then turn back on your heels? He who turns…
“O Messenger of Allah, God was witness to how they broke my pledge,
how Ṭalḥah and al-Zubayr led ʿĀʾishah to Basra under the pretense of ḥajj and ʿumrah,
and how they fought me, until twenty thousand Muslims were slain.
I endured as You commanded —
‘Be patient, as were the steadfast Messengers before you.’
Indeed, by Allah, this is the true interpretation of His saying:
‘Muhammad is but a Messenger… If he dies or is slain, will you turn back on your heels?’”
(Tafsīr Ahl al-Bayt, vol. 2, p. 780)
Thus, Imam ʿAlī (ع) personifies the shākirīn — the “grateful ones” — mentioned at the end of the verse, those who remain steadfast on the divine covenant despite betrayal and bloodshed.
🌅 The Ever-Living Message
This verse, enriched by the words of Ahl al-Bayt (ع), carries a timeless message:
• The Prophet ﷺ is the Seal of Prophets — but divine guidance does not die with him.
• The Imams (ع) are the inheritors of that guidance, the living manifestation of the Qur’an.
• To “turn back on one’s heels” is to reject divine succession and replace revelation with personal judgment.
• True gratitude (shukr) is loyalty to the divine command — unwavering adherence to the covenant of Wilāyah.
🌿 In the Light of the Awaited Imam (عج)
In the time of occultation, this verse still speaks to us:
Will we remain among the shākirīn — those who hold fast to the divine command, the covenant of Wilāyah — or will we follow the path of those who “turned back on their heels”?
Remaining loyal to the Imamate and preparing for the return of the Qāʾim al-Mahdī (عج) is the ultimate expression of gratitude and steadfastness in the face of divine tests.

🌿 Surah Āl ʿImrān – Verse 144: The Test of Steadfast Faith and Gratitude 📖 “Muhammad is but a Messenger; messengers have passed away before him. If he dies or is slain, will you then turn back on your heels? He who turns back on his heels will not harm Allah…
He recognized our rights as none other did.
He reconnected the ties that were cut,
gave peace to the fearful souls, revived those nearly destroyed,
and enriched the oppressed who had been deprived.
He sought only the pleasure of the Lord of the worlds,
desiring no reward from anyone but Him.
Indeed, ‘Allah will soon reward the grateful, and He does not waste the reward of the doers of good.’”
(Tafsīr Ahl al-Bayt, vol. 2, p. 786; Biḥār al-Anwār, vol. 49, p. 141)
📜 Insight:
Imam al-Riḍā (ع) portrays ʿAlī (ع) as the perfect servant of gratitude — one who acts purely for divine satisfaction. His shukr was not in words, but in his selfless devotion to truth, justice, and divine will.
🌿 Mawlā ʿAlī (عليه السلام) — The Qur’anic Symbol of Gratitude
Across all these narrations, the shākirīn mentioned in this verse are none other than Imam ʿAlī (ع) and his pure descendants — those who remained firm upon divine command when others turned back.
Their patience (ṣabr) in trials and their gratitude (shukr) in divine service define the true meaning of steadfast faith (thabāt).
The grateful ones are therefore not just those who thank Allah verbally —
they are those who remain loyal to Wilāyah, even when the world turns away.
🌅 Reflection for the Ummah
• To “turn back on one’s heels” is to abandon the divine covenant after the Prophet ﷺ.
• To be among the shākirīn is to remain loyal to divine succession — the path of ʿAlī and his progeny (عليهم السلام).
• Gratitude is not a word — it is a stance of faith, a refusal to compromise truth even in loneliness.
