📜📸 Castello. The last Sestiere (district) we meet when we walk east in Venice. You can see it on the Map☝️❤️bordered in red❤️
Castello is the largest of the six Sestieri of Venice, it starts immediately after St. Mark's Square and it comprehends #Arsenale area, #Biennale area, the amazing Riva degli Schiavoni walk and the stunning islands of #SantElena and San Pietro di Castello. It is also the greenest 🌳 part of Venice, fantastic parks and gardens with amazing views on the city and the Lagoon, and mainly a residential area, so less touristy.
Thanks to my fantastic #WalkingTour in #Castello 😃 you can fully enjoy all main sights, amazing secret places off the beaten tracks, indulge in "prosecco and cicheti al baccalà" 🥂🍣😋 in the large Via Garibaldi, while hearing amazing stories about local life and the ghost of the young Chiaretta of the near Sant'Anna nunnery...

5 years ago in Autumn 2016, Samuel (founder and vocalist of Italian alternative rock band #Subsonica) came to Venice to shoot the video for his first single as a solo artist.
The video is just a walk entirely filmed in Sestiere #Castello, the most residential area in Venice, I can recognize the Church of San Giuseppe which is part of my Walking Tour 😉👇

According to the Catholic calendar today is San Martino of Tours, a Medieval knight who became Saint after donating his coat to a poor freezing man: it was November and miraculously it stopped raining and the sun shone ☀️. That's why they call it St. Martin's Summer (it's like the Indian Summer) and usually these days of November are sunny and warm 🌞
In Venice, #SanMartino day is celebrated with the traditional chocolate sweet which lies on every Venetian table☝️😋 and with children running around town, beating their pots, chanting an ancient San Martino rhyme and asking for sweets in the shops... similar to #Halloween, less scary and with deeper roots!
📸☝️In the pictures the Medieval San Martino Church in Venice #Castello (probably founded by Longobards from Ravenna town, that's why a French Saint became so popular here!) and San Martino's engraving on its façade, reproduced in the local sweet!

San Pietro in Castello becomes the first site of a Patriarch (= Catholic bishop) in Venice.
Before that, Venice was "under" the Patriarch of Grado, today a town and seaside resort in Friuli Venezia Giulia region.
It took more than 350 years (right after the 👉 fall of the Republic) to move the Patriarch from San Pietro in Castello to the actual #SanMarco site.
The first Patriarch of Venice was Lorenzo Giustiniani and, to confirm the uniqueness of this city, he was nominated by the Republic Senate, not by the Church.
San Pietro in #Castello, with its leaning tower 📸☝️, is one of the most secluded islands of Venice, absolutely out of the touristy trails...
therefore included in my #WalkingTour 😉
