🛑 Enclosed Space Entry – Critical Shipboard Safety Guide
Entering enclosed spaces is one of the most dangerous tasks at sea. Fatalities occur yearly due to poor preparation, lack of oxygen, and undetected toxic gases. Don’t take shortcuts — your life depends on correct procedures.
What counts as an enclosed space?
Any compartment not meant for continuous occupancy, with limited entry and poor ventilation:
• Cargo holds
• Double bottom/ballast tanks
• Void spaces
• Pump/fuel tanks
• Cofferdams
⚠️ Main Hazards
• Oxygen Deficiency (< 19.5%) – risk of asphyxiation
• Toxic Gases – H₂S, CO, CH₄ may be present
• Flammable Atmosphere – risk of explosion
• Sudden Gas Release – from sludge, cargo residues
• Physical Hazards – poor lighting, slips, heat
✅ Full Entry Preparation Checklist
1. Risk Assessment
– Identify hazards, PPE, procedures
2. Permit to Work
– Must be issued and signed by Chief Officer or Master
3. Atmosphere Testing
– O₂ = 20.9%, CO/H₂S = 0 ppm, LEL < 1%
– Use calibrated multi-gas detectors (e.g. Dräger, MSA)
4. Ventilation
– Use blowers or natural draft — pre and during entry
5. PPE & Safety Equipment
– Harness, lifeline, portable detector, radio
– SCBA set near entry point
6. Rescue Plan & Standby Watch
– Entrant, Attendant, Permit Issuer, Gas Tester roles
– Rescue team on standby with SCBA and stretcher
🕒 While Inside:
✅ Keep monitoring gases
✅ Maintain communication
❌ Exit immediately if alarm sounds
📋 After Completion:
• Cancel PTW
• Record in logbook or SMS
• Report unsafe findings
🧠 Best Practices
• Never trust your senses — always test first
• Never skip the Permit to Work
• Always drill for enclosed space rescue
• Review company procedures and IMO regulations

In response to a concerning rise in machinery and electrical failures among vessels navigating high-traffic shipping lanes, volatile weather systems, and complex tidal regions, the Liberia Maritime Authority has initiated a Concentrated Inspection Campaign (CIC) to reinforce global safety standards and regulatory compliance. This proactive measure addresses the heightened operational risks found in demanding maritime environments, where equipment reliability is critical to preventing collisions, groundings, and environmental disasters. By intensifying the scrutiny of propulsion systems, power redundancy, and crew emergency preparedness, the Authority aims to ensure that shipowners maintain rigorous preventative maintenance schedules and that all registered vessels are structurally and operationally equipped to handle the stresses of modern commercial seafaring. #LiberianRegistry #PSC #CIC #CheckList
