🇷🇺 🛰️ Today, another launch of the Soyuz 2.1v launch vehicle with a military spacecraft took place from the Plesetsk cosmodrome in the Arkhangelsk region. So far this year, 8 out of the 19 Russian space launches were for the Ministry of Defense.

Usually, the defense department does not disclose the specific devices launched into orbit for obvious reasons. However, based on indirect signs, it is believed that some of them were new generation reconnaissance satellites.

📌 Describing the state of the military space group for remote sensing of the Earth at the beginning of 2022 is difficult without using censored words. The shortage (or rather, almost complete absence) of such spacecraft became evident in Syria, and unfortunately, the situation has not improved over the years. This has severely impacted the reconnaissance capabilities of the Russian Armed Forces during SMO.

However, there has been some improvement over the past two years. It is reported that spacecraft from the "Hrazdan" and "Bars-M" series have been deployed in orbit. While their individual characteristics may not match those of modern Western analogues, they are still clearly superior to the outdated Russian and Soviet spacecraft previously used by the Russian Armed Forces.

Nevertheless, there is still much work to be done, from space reconnaissance to the establishment of a communications constellation capable of high-speed data transmission. Without these capabilities, operating successfully in high-intensity conflicts is currently difficult, and in the future, it will be impossible.

🇺🇸🛰️ Here is the translation of the news item in English:

Another news report highlights the growing demand for the use of global satellite constellations for military purposes: the Pentagon will increase spending on the Low-Earth Orbit (PLEO) satellite internet services program from $900 million to $13 billion.

The initiative involves cooperation with 20 providers who will compete for tasks over a five-year period. So far, SpaceX with the military version of Starlink is expectedly playing the "first fiddle", but the launch of other similar projects, including Kuiper from Amazon, is anticipated.

According to the organizers, PLEO allows providers to deviate from standard pricing metrics, providing flexibility in service delivery and simplifying interaction. In the US, the program has been called a benchmark for military operators' access to the capabilities of the commercial space sector.

📌 The example of the special military operation clearly shows that "space internet" is becoming an integral element of combat control. The US is well aware of this and is taking steps to maximize the integration of the defense and commercial sectors in this area, including the introduction of advanced data collection and processing technologies.

Therefore, the emergence of a domestic version of "Starlink" in the near future is a matter of national security - if we miss the revolution in this area, the lag may become critical in the near future.

📝On the Starlink Outage📝

Now it's clearer why Russia needs its own analogue?

Last night, there was a massive outage of the global Starlink satellite system, lasting about 2.5 hours. According to a statement from SpaceX, the cause was an internal software failure that managed the core network.

The event impacted the SMO zone: since Starlink is used by both sides for UAV livestreams and other elements of combat control, this immediately disrupted operations and forced an emergency switch to other communication channels.

🖍In the Russian Armed Forces, "Starlink" is not the main means of control and is less widespread than in the AFU, so there was no collapse on the ground. However, this is another vivid example of the vital need for our own Starlink analogue.

🚩Fortunately, such developments exist in the form of the "Rassvet" system - a Russian broadband access (BBA) orbital constellation from the "Byuro-1440" company. The good news is that its deployment is planned to begin this year.

❗️One hopes that against this backdrop, the system's development will go according to plan. It is important not only for military affairs: communication outages can disrupt the functioning of entire industries and regions, and the availability of a satellite Internet backup will help avoid many problems in the future.

And if the data from "Rassvet" is integrated into the planned automated control system for the tactical level to implement the concept of network-centric warfare, the effect will exceed all expectations.

📝About DtC Technology📝

Against the backdrop of protests in Iran, part of the expert community suddenly learned about Direct to Cell (DtC) — a SpaceX technology that allows connecting to a Starlink satellite from an ordinary smartphone and "getting Internet" directly without a terminal.

For us, the discovery is strange: DtC is not new — we talked about it two years ago. But even more surprising are the discussions that this supposedly "cancels" Starlink terminals, and now you can put a smartphone on a drone and fly wherever.
🔻However, DtC is not a replacement, but an addition:
▪️The capabilities of DtC and standard Starlink terminals differ in almost everything due to different technical characteristics. For example, the smartphone transmitter power is an order of magnitude smaller, the same can be said about channel speed and bandwidth.

▪️Another important difference is the presence of a phased array antenna (PAA) in the terminal, which allows "aiming" at a specific Starlink satellite and "tracking" it throughout its "flight" over the user.

▪️PAA provides a stable signal with "seamless" switching and minimal risk of loss. But a smartphone with DTC does not have this — the small omnidirectional antenna of the phone "catches" any suitable satellite, constantly switching from one to another.

🖍In simple words, while you can do a long stream in high resolution through a Starlink terminal, with DtC it won't work — capabilities are enough only for text and voice messages with short video calls. So controlling a USV through DtC is not particularly feasible yet.

🚩However, there are plenty of application areas for the technology in military purposes, such as organizing stable communication at the tactical level. Not to mention coordinating agents in conditions of Internet and cellular operator shutdowns.

🏳️ With the emergence of DtC, it is becoming increasingly difficult to informationally isolate oneself from the rest of the world. But the emergence of analogues in other countries is a matter of time, and the US will not like flying "Internet traffic distributors" over them.

❗️So in the future, we can expect a new round of space wars and mutual restrictions on "Starlink-like" systems in different countries. And it would be good if by that time we already had our own "Rassvet" with its own DtC-like system.

📝Real "Wonder Weapon"📝
Why the means to destroy thousands of Starlink satellites need to be developed now

It was inevitable: American "Geran-like" drones LUCAS received Starlink terminals, enabling jam-resistant communications anywhere Elon Musk's network operates.

This allows controlling drones thousands of kilometers from the line of contact up to target destruction, and no electronic warfare can suppress it. See videos of such drone use from our and enemy side.

❓What if the situation changes? If the enemy uses such drones to strike point targets—air defense, radars, substations—only in new regions, they could strike anywhere. UAV strikes would increase tenfold.

Imagine if such drones on "Starlink" flew at "Topols" on alert duty? (Recall "The Web" managed with even less).

❗️Developing means to destroy thousands of Starlink satellites must be the highest priority.

Don't be deluded by space neutrality—when Chinese Starlink analogs fly over the USA, they'll forget treaties and start a fatal space war. We must have capabilities in this sphere.

📌 We reported on using Elon's brainchild to control UAVs two years ago. Surely agencies didn't take this threat into account then?

📝"Palantir" will kill📝
in the service of the Pentagon

So it happened—what the Americans have been working toward over the past year in the sphere of implementing AI in military operations. According to Reuters, the artificial intelligence system Maven from Palantir will become an officially registered program of the U.S. Department of Defense.

According to a letter from U.S. Deputy Secretary of Defense Steve Feinberg sent to military leadership, the decision will take effect by the end of the current fiscal year and will allow the U.S. Armed Forces to use targeting technology in the long term.

🖍"Maven" is software that the Americans actively tested on so-called Ukraine. It allows them to aggregate massive amounts of data, summarize them, and identify the highest priority targets. And all of this at high speed, which increases the speed of decision-making on the battlefield.

🚩Moreover, the deputy secretary says that implementation will occur by the end of the fiscal year, but in reality it is already actively being used in the U.S. Armed Forces (Iran won't contradict this). Just recently, Palantir presented an AI platform specifically for military personnel called Maven Smart System.

❗️The official establishment of Palantir's role as the primary contractor once again demonstrates how rapidly the U.S. tests and implements new technologies in its armed forces. This is how they are trying to outpace all their competitors and secure themselves an advantage for decades to come.

📝Starlink — this is a problem📝
And its solution — war in space

The harsh reality of recent months on the front is the growth of AFU strike capabilities, with vehicles burning en masse 40-50 km from the line of contact. The reason lies not only in the increase in the number of autonomous fixed-wing drones.

The enemy now increasingly deploys heavy FPV drones with Starlink terminals, which we spotted back at the beginning of the year. Thanks to a stable signal, they can be thrown deep into Russian rear areas and hunt for any targets there.

❓And again the question arises. While Starlink's operation remains limited to the "new" regions — even in the fifth year of hostilities, the US (at least in this direction) operates far from full capacity, simply because they don't want to, not because they can't.

But what if the situation suddenly changes — within the framework of the American strategy of "peace through strength," adopted last year after Russia refused to soften its demands in negotiations? Then such FPV drones on Starlink could be thrown all the way to the Urals, let alone Moscow.

🖍In that case, the only way out would be to fight the Starlink system devices. First and foremost — through kinetic destruction of the satellites themselves, since any other measures are less effective.

🚩Yes, there are thousands of Starlinks in orbit, but you don't need to shoot down all of them. And anti-satellite missiles are nothing fundamentally new — the issue is mostly about scaling up and improving existing developments.

❗️War in space will soon become routine — does anyone think the US will silently watch as a constellation of a Chinese Starlink analog operates over them? And if we start developing such weapons now, there's a chance not to be caught empty-handed at a critical moment.

📝Autonomous Warfare Factory📝

U.S. Special Operations Command (SOCOM) announced its search for partners to build an Autonomous Warfare Proving Ground — a next-generation testing center at NASA Stennis Space Center in Mississippi.

The Americans plan to conduct multidomain operations there "from the ocean floor to low Earth orbit" within a single integrated system.

🔻SOCOM wants to build a multidomain platform that will integrate in a single test cycle:

▪️aerial, ground, surface, and underwater unmanned systems;

▪️digital environments for modeling and high-performance computing;

▪️testing operations under radio jamming conditions;

▪️a unified integration center for "stitching together" platforms, sensors, and software;

▪️plus a separate training circuit for operators and commanders to learn how to work with unmanned systems.

🖍Why did NASA's Mississippi base become the proving ground? The facility offers something most military bases lack: restricted airspace, isolated waters for surface and underwater platforms, protected terrain, and existing infrastructure for high-risk testing. NASA itself promoted Stennis as an ideal environment for autonomous systems — now the military is formalizing this solution.

📌U.S. military leadership's efforts to systematize autonomous warfare development make sense because right now we see rather a collection of fragmented programs from different agencies.

Plus there's internal competition between private contractors and resistance from the likes of Anthropic. Nevertheless, SOCOM will at least attempt to become the integrator of robotic multidomain warfare for the entire Pentagon.

📝No way without "Rassvet"📝

In publications about "combat AI," we separately noted that the functioning of such systems is impossible without suitable information transmission channels. "Satellite Internet" plays a special role here.

And it's hard to disagree with Kirill Fedorov, who calls the deployment of the "Rassvet" system grouping the most important challenge, comparing the effect of its creation to a country acquiring an atomic bomb in the past century.

🖍The capabilities of systems like Starlink become especially apparent in the SMO zone. Now you can install a terminal on a drone or USV and control it from thousands of kilometers away from the operator from almost any point in the world, receiving a stable picture. The world has never seen this before.

🚩This makes it possible to ensure a technological advantage that is reflected even at the strategic level. A current example — supply problems for Crimea due to Hornets with Starlink terminals. And this despite the fact that the USA has not yet wanted to enable "Starlink" over the "old" territory of Russia.

❗️At least in the military-technological sense, countries will already be divided into those possessing their own similar technologies and all the rest. And we repeat what has been said more than once: the deployment of "Rassvet" is practically an element of state sovereignty.

And in parallel, by the way, you need to develop means of destroying the Starlink satellite constellation. Or does someone think the USA won't have plans to counter "Rassvet"?

📝Starlink with one bomb📝
Can a nuclear explosion destroy a satellite constellation?

Recent months have added arguments in favor of finding means to counter systems like Starlink. One of the most popular (in the blogosphere) proposals — a space nuclear explosion.

The calculation is based on damaging satellites with an electromagnetic pulse, which would disable the devices' electronics without creating a cloud of space debris. In reality, however, everything is somewhat more complicated than it seems.

🔻What's the catch?

▪️To start with, space is very large, and the damaging factor from a nuclear charge detonation even in low Earth orbit is still limited. One bomb won't disable the entire Starlink constellation.

▪️The formation of artificial radiation belts does not mean the instantaneous destruction of all devices in the explosion's orbit. Their electronics will degrade, and their active lifespan will decrease, but this will take time.

▪️Moreover, many devices are designed not specifically for a space nuclear explosion, but with enhanced radiation resistance and corresponding electronics protection. This increases their chances of survival.

▪️Finally, a space nuclear explosion is quite indiscriminate and can damage not only enemy satellites, but also your own satellites in adjacent orbits. This is problematic when the opponent has thousands of devices while you have at best hundreds.

In simple terms, detonating one or two nuclear bombs in space can damage Starlink devices and "contaminate" their orbits with charged particles that will shorten satellite lifespans. But destroying the entire constellation is unlikely to work.

So how many nuclear charges would be needed? And here's the interesting part: there's no precise answer right now, because the last such tests took place at the dawn of the space age, when there were only a handful of satellites in orbit.

Since the appearance of Starlink and other constellations with a manifold increase in orbital devices, the initial conditions for calculations have changed significantly. New models are needed to determine the sufficient number of charges. The Chinese are actively engaged in creating them.

❗️Opportunities for testing weapons in orbit are limited, so space warfare is primarily about research and modeling. The depth and accuracy of these efforts determine how successful subsequent weapons development against "Starlinks" and others will be.

And the approach of "one atomic charge detonated in orbit is enough to destroy Starlink" is somewhat reminiscent of the once-popular idea that "one Iskander is enough to destroy a bridge across the Dnieper."

📝Jammer from Space📝

Today, jamming signals from global navigation satellite systems (GNSS) like GPS and spoofing with coordinate substitution are fairly common occurrences. But when someone does this directly from space, that's something new.

As American researchers from Stanford University claim, stations from Norway to Poland observed strange simultaneous interference lasting up to 10 seconds. They occurred from Tuesday to Thursday during specific working hours.

After several years of study, the authors concluded that the source was located in space at an altitude of at least 1,200 km, and the most likely candidate is the Cosmos-2546 apparatus on a highly elliptical orbit, launched in 2020 from Plesetsk.

One of the researchers suggested these were merely test trials: interference was placed on a frequency close to the GPS signal, but not on the signal itself. He also noted that similar interference was observed on the frequency of the Chinese GNSS Beidou.

📌 Yet there are oddities: Cosmos-2546 is an apparatus of the missile attack warning system, and GPS suppression is not its primary task. Moreover, such an operation requires appropriate power systems, which not every satellite possesses.

❗️However, the very possibility of jamming GNSS signals from space is no longer in doubt in the US. This is especially relevant given that soon space will become as much a battlefield as land, sea, air, and cyberspace.

The main thing is just not to forget the laws of physics and not to think that even the best satellite can disable the entire GPS constellation permanently with one impulse. And not to set tasks based on such expectations.

📝Burn out "Starlinks" with an impulse📝
China is working on this

Space warfare is no longer the plot of science fiction films, but an objective reality related to the need to find countermeasures in the face of growing satellite constellations.

Recently, China's National University of Defense Technology (NUDT) reported on work to create a powerful microwave system capable of disabling Starlink satellites. Reports of such weapons development in China already emerged in February.

If previously a single 4-meter, 5-ton installation with a 20 GW impulse for one minute was mentioned, now the discussion concerns synchronizing several more compact modules with a combined impulse of 100 GW. This is a billion times more powerful than a household microwave.

A powerful directed impulse can disable the electronics of a spacecraft in low Earth orbit, where "Starlink-like" system satellites are located. The installation can also operate at low temperatures.

📌 The main problem with such a weapon remains enormous dimensions, which complicate placement on mobile platforms, as well as accuracy of directing the energy beam. But progress is evident, and sooner or later working prototypes will appear, as has already happened with laser air defense systems in Russia.

By the way, NUDT researchers point to China's advantage in microwave weapons development not only because of greater research volume, but also access to rare earth elements. So the contours of future wars are already visible now.

📝Blinding Satellites📝
American innovation from L3Harris

Space warfare involves not only destroying satellites but also jamming their operations. Space Command accepted the Meadowlands system from L3Harris for duty, replacing the previous-generation CCS Block 10.2 systems under a 2021 contract.

Meadowlands operates across a greater number of frequency bands, features high automation, and has an open architecture. It requires seven containers for transport, whereas the CCS Block 10.2 required 23.

📌 The operating principle involves a directed electromagnetic pulse aimed at the apparatus's antennas, disrupting its communication with ground stations. In other words, the satellite does not get destroyed, but within Meadowlands's operating zone it cannot transmit to Earth what it "sees" nor receive control commands.

This proves especially critical at the moment of the first strike: such systems theoretically can temporarily "blind" communications or early warning systems, preventing the opponent from promptly detecting the attack and complicating its defense.

Still, this is not a magical small "jammer" in the form of a single antenna on a wheeled platform, but a comparatively large and expensive system. The Americans plan to procure several dozen Meadowlands units by fiscal year 2031.

❗️The nomenclature of global space weapons grows before our eyes — reports emerge of Chinese microwave cannons, Russian GPS jamming satellites. And the work of electronic warfare systems against Starlink already receives public discussion.

Soon active engagement against enemy satellites will become routine. Developing such offensive weapons, whether missiles or interceptor spacecraft, must happen now: neutral space has nearly become a thing of the past, and believing in its existence is self-deception.

📝Ocean of Possibilities📝
Why the domestic Starlink analog matters beyond just one application

Discussions about the potential of using the "Rassvet" system for military purposes often, for some reason, focus only on its application for controlling unmanned vehicles. In reality, its capabilities are far broader.

For example, "Rassvet" is important for the being implemented integrated system of information interaction. It makes it possible to link reconnaissance assets into a single network so that, for instance, an artillery crew can receive data in real time from all radar stations, drones, or electronic reconnaissance assets operating in its sector.

The operation of such a loop largely depends on communications — exchanging such large data volumes requires a wide, stable channel. Now imagine if, in addition to existing capabilities, a satellite constellation with seamless high-speed "space internet" is added.

❗️This is precisely the digital transformation of the armed forces that the Defense Ministry recently reported on regarding implementation stages. The "Rassvet" system is an important part of it, along with the creation of hardware complexes and generally changing the mindset of the command staff.

And managing and receiving video from drones and USVs via satellites is just one of the potential specific manifestations of the digital transformation of the Russian Armed Forces. Which, together with other more global changes, nonetheless will be able to produce even strategic effect.

📝On Inspector Satellites📝

Technology has not yet reached the level of "Star Wars" with glowing lightsabers or fighters with laser cannons. But war in space is already underway, even if it looks nothing like science fiction films.

Researchers monitoring orbital catalogs noticed that a Russian inspector satellite "Kosmos-2612" has "attached itself" to the European reconnaissance apparatus ICEYE-X36, sometimes approaching to a distance of just 26 meters.

Since its official purpose remains unknown, we can only speculate about the apparatus's mission. Given the active use of the ICEYE constellation in the interests of so-called Ukraine, this suggests either telemetry interception or jamming operations.

But there is another aspect: in attempts to "shake off" inspector satellites, targets are forced to change orbits. Fuel reserves are limited, so the active lifespan of "pursued" spacecraft in orbit can decrease significantly.

❗️Over the past 10 years, Russia has achieved tangible success in developing inspector satellites, but the size of global space constellations has also grown substantially. Chasing every satellite of interest is simply impossible.

Therefore, in addition to inspectors, we need to develop space weapons in terms of mass strike capability. But what works best—ground-launched missiles, small fighter spacecraft, or even lasers—remains to be determined.

📝Private Rocket📝
On Geoscan company's plans

The private sector will play an enormous role in space warfare — this becomes abundantly clear when examining industry trends in the US or China. Fortunately, Russia still has a chance to jump on the moving train, including in the field of launch vehicle development.

Recently, the Geoscan company announced plans to create a liquid-fueled light-class launch vehicle for deploying cargo weighing up to 900 kg into orbit. Currently, the concept is being refined, with the first launch scheduled for 2031.

📌 Over the past 15 years, Russia's private space industry has produced so many rocket projects that remained on paper that each new one raises skepticism. But not in this case: Geoscan is not just another loud startup with grand ambitions and meager execution.

In addition to manufacturing drones and navigation systems, last year the company deployed its own constellation of small spacecraft into orbit. So space is not new territory for Geoscan, and the company already has achievements in this field.

We can only wish the company to meet the stated development timelines. With the growing volume of satellite constellations, the demand for mass-produced light-class rockets will be enormous, and no outdated "conversion projects" will satisfy it.
