Transfer rumor: Could Bayern Munich’s David Alaba end up at Juventus?

Beier/FC Bayern via Getty ImagesThe Bayern Munich man has not yet extended his contract. Where will this end? With the David Alaba contract extension saga at a stalemate, rumors have begun circulating about the Austrian’s potential departure from Bayern Munich. According to Florian Plettenberg of Sport1, there is concrete interest from Juventus for the player. Having won the Champions League twice in Bavaria, is Alaba considering a move abroad?Well, not so fast. Just today, sporting director Hasan Salihamidzic said that Bayern were still trying to convince the Austrian to sign a new contract with the club. Plettenberg confirms the same, but also confirms reports claiming interest from Italy:Update #Alaba: I can’t confirm an agreement between #Juventus & Alabas representatives (Zahavi/ Dad George). But there is definitely a high interest from #Juve. FCB officials still believe that Alaba will extend the contract. But he takes his time & there is no ultimatum. @SPORT1 https://t.co/CJexdiTREy— Florian Plettenberg (@Plettigoal) October 12, 2020Importantly, there doesn’t seem to be an agreement between Alaba and Juventus, which keeps Bayern at the table. Why Juventus? For months now, it’s been reported that the player only wanted to move to Real Madrid or FC Barcelona if he left Germany, but perhaps the current situation has changed his mind. Given that Bayern are standing firm on their salary offer, and the apparent lack of interest from Spain, Alaba has been forced to broaden his horizons. In that case, Juventus wouldn’t be a bad destination. Unlike the Spanish clubs, who are well-covered in the Austrian’s preferred playing positions (left-back, center-back, and midfield), Alaba would be a key cog in Turin if he were to move there. The Bianconeri love experienced players, which makes Alaba, as a two-time treble winner, a nice fit. They also have ambitions of winning the Champions League in the coming seasons, which suits a player of the Austrian’s caliber — he will get to play with stars like Cristiano Ronaldo and Paulo Dybala while in the prime of his career. He could even get to play in midfield if he chooses — there’s no Joshua Kimmich or Thiago Alcantara around to keep him on defense. As for Juventus, the move would make perfect sense if Alaba chooses to leave on a free. The Old Lady likes to hand out huge wages…

Much like the sun rising, this season has proven that Schalke are always in desperate need of money.Things have been tough financially ever since Chairman Clemens Toennies was ousted from the board. However, I don’t know anyone who would defend keeping him there after he made some incredibly racist statements while in charge at the club.In the immediate time, yes, it’s a good chunk of cash for a team desperately in need of it. €18.5 million is nothing to scoff at and it’s a good thing the club was able to put themselves in a position to cash-in on players.Failure to sell younger players at the optimal time has been one of the biggest missteps in the club’s last 10 years. While they have made a good chunk of cash on players like Thilo Kehrer (€37 million to PSG in 2018/2019), Julian Draxler (€43 million to Wolfsburg in 2015/2016) and Leroy Sane (€52 million to Manchester City in 2016/17), they have lost out on just as much money in the form of undervaluing academy players or letting them go for free.Because in the span of about 7-8 years, they let tens of millions walk out of the Ruhr valley for free. FC Bayern Muenchen Unveils New Signing Sadio ManePhoto by S. Mellar/FC Bayern via Getty ImagesThings are moving fast for Bayern Munich.According to Radio Bianconera and TuttoJuve.com journalist Mirko Di Natale, Bayern Munich is expected to submit its next offer to Juventus for center-back Matthijs de Ligt within the next few hours. This news follows the recent narrative that Bayern Munich is looking to close a deal for De Ligt this week. By moving quickly, Bayern Munich is hoping to get the Dutchman integrated into the squad and hopefully have him join the team as it readies for its preseason tour in the United States, which will feature matches against MLS side D.C. United in the nation’s capital, along with a game against Manchester City at historic Lambeau Field in Green Bay, Wisconsin:I 60mln più bonus presentati dal #Bayern per #deLigt sono stati rifiutati.

Juventus Medical TestsPhoto by Daniele Badolato - Juventus FC/Juventus FC via Getty ImagesLooks like both sides want the transfer to be concluded as soon as possible.Matthijs de Ligt is back in Turin and training with Juventus, but maybe not for much longer. According to Italian journalist Romeo Agresti, considered quite reliable, Bayern Munich want to finalize a deal for the Dutchman before Juve fly out on their US preseason tour on Wednesday. This leaves just over 48 hours for the two sides to reach an agreement, if the transfer is to be announced in that time frame.According to the same report, the two clubs are getting closer to each other’s valuations. Agresti quotes a transfer fee of around 80 to 90 million euros — probably a slight overestimate, since his sources clearly come from the Italian side of the negotiating table. This is just like the time Liverpool demanded over €50m for Sadio Mane.Bayern have a decent amount of money on hand thanks to selling Robert Lewandowski to FC Barcelona, which is good because De ligt is sure to be a wildly expensive signing. For now, the exact numbers remain up for debate. In concomitanza con la sempre più vicina partenza di #DeLigt direzione #Bayern, la #Juve ovviamente ha iniziato a muoversi per il sostituto: ad oggi, tra i nomi che circolano, quello di #PauTorres è il più freddino @GoalItalia— Romeo Agresti (@romeoagresti) July 17, 2022Juventus, meanwhile, are targeting Villarreal defender Pau Torres as a replacement for the departing Dutchman. With Kalidou Koulibaly already confirmed by Chelsea FC, and Barcelona pursuing Jules Kounde, the pool of top quality center backs available for purchase is shrinking by the minute. This is another factor likely pressuring both clubs to come to a quick deal. With any luck, we’ll see MDL in a Bayern Munich shirt in the upcoming week or so. Stay tuned for more news and updates on this transfer.
