Bundesliga MD 04 Preview: Bielefeld vs. Bayern
After the defeat against Hoffenheim and the narrow victory over Hertha BSC, FC Bayern will want to get back on track at Bielefeld. But the club from North Rhine-Westphalia in Germany’s west has other plans. When Arminia Bielefeld secured their promotion to the Bundesliga in the summer, COVID-19 for a fleeting moment was of no importance. Hundreds of fans let their emotions run free and celebrated their heroes. Not many would have expected Bielefeld to be able to achieve such success before the start of the season. After Bielefeld seemed to establish themselves in the Bundesliga at the end of the 2000s, difficult years followed. Relegation to the 2. Bundesliga, followed by relegation to the third division as well as financial worries characterized this period. In the 2018/19 season, too, a fierce relegation battle threatened for a long time. But then, on December 10 2018, Uwe Neuhaus took over the coaching job.Arminia Bielefeld: Suddenly in the BundesligaThings quickly improved. The sale of the stadium enabled the club to reduce its debts considerably. Neuhaus had already demonstrated that he was able to lead and establish a club in the second division. He had achieved this with Union Berlin. And not only that: Within a few years, Neuhaus had turned the team from Berlin’s Köpenick neighborhood into a team that became a legitimate challenger for promotion. As a result, ironically, at some point the 7th and 9th places he successively achieved with the club were no longer deemed sufficient and he had to say goodbye.Neuhaus then became head coach at Dresden, achieved promotion to the second division with that club too, and followed that up by a strong fifth place the season after. But the following season saw Dresden finish in a disappointing 14th place – and Neuhaus was waved goodbye again. After that followed Bielefeld where so far he seems to have found his destiny. In the second half of the 2018/19 season, he reached 7th place with the club, followed the year after by a clear and, for many, surprising promotion to the Bundesliga. But this achievement can also be seen as the logical conclusion of his personal development. Over the years, Neuhaus has developed his ideas of football further, learned from his mistakes and finally succeeded in leading a club to Bundesliga promotion at the third attempt.Neuhaus has learned from his mistakesBut what does Neuhaus’s football look like? In the end, pragmatism is probably the word that sums up his approach most succinctly. When he was at Union, as ambitions increased, many became increasingly bored with the tendency of the team tho move the ball around without much territorial gain. Neuhaus’s football was tactically quite advanced and, on its day, it was quite beautiful to watch, but on less good days it provided for a lot of boredom.Too static, too monotonous pace, not enough risk – the accustomed criticisms of his reappeared at some point in Dresden as well. The final step to the top he simply did not seem to be able to make. But this has changed. His Bielefeld team now seems like the finished product of his years of personal development.Without a doubt, Neuhaus has been significantly aided by the very clever transfer policy of the club. Last year, talented players like Marcel Hartel, Ritsu Doan or Arne Maier as well as seasoned players like Cebio Soukou or Mike van der Hoorn were brought in for comparatively small amounts of money. And these are just a few examples. However, a healthy mix of small transfer fees, loans and free transfers is only one side of the coin. The other is that these players also fit in seamlessly with Uwe Neuhaus’ ideas of football.Bielefeld’s build-up play up closeKey to Bielefeld’s success is the team’s backbone consisting of the goalkeeper, central defender…

VfB Stuttgart v Borussia Moenchengladbach - BundesligaPhoto by Harry Langer/DeFodi Images via Getty ImagesBorussia Mönchengladbach star midfielder Florian Neuhaus has been relentlessly linked to Bayern Munich over the last few months. From his father’s Bayern Munich fandom to his game-winning goal against the Bavarians earlier this month, the 23-year-old star has piqued the interest of the club and its fans alike. While Neuhaus does have a release clause in his contract that would allow him to leave M’Gladbach this summer, Sport1 reporter Florian Plettenberg does not think the Germany international has an inclination to leave Borussia-Park for the Allianz Arena just yet:❗️Update #Neuhaus: Sportbild has reported that he has a fixed exit clause. True. According to our info, it is in the 40-mio-€ range & can be pulled in the summer. Neuhaus feels comfortable at #BMG. Nevertheless: Transfer possible. Tendency: No change to #FCBayern! @SPORT1— Florian Plettenberg (@Plettigoal) January 22, 2021At €40 million in a COVID-19 world, the price tag on Neuhaus might be a little high for Bayern Munich, especially for a player that would not project to be a starter next season. The interesting question is what could be holding Neuhaus back from wanting a move to Bavaria? Sure, he is said to be happy and comfortable with Borussia Mönchengladbach, but Plettenberg says a transfer is still “possible” — just probably not to Bayern Munich. The obvious answer if the presence of Thomas Muller, Leon Goretzka, and Joshua Kimmich. With those three players filling the 10, 8, and 6 positions, Neuhaus might not see a clear pathway to playing time and has also seen many a midfielder go to Bayern Munich with hopes of earning a starting role, only to be relegated to the bench.Whatever the case, Neuhaus will only continue to garner more interest with the types of performances he has put forth this season.

Borussia Mönchengladbach v Borussia Dortmund - DFB Cup: Quarter FinalPhoto by Mario Hommes/DeFodi Images via Getty ImagesIf the report is true, Bayern Munich is in the preliminary stage of talks with Florian Neuhaus.A report from Italian journalist Nico Shira has some of the German media buzzing about a potential move by Borussia Mönchengladbach midfielder Florian Neuhaus to Bayern Munich. While Neuhaus has been linked to Bayern Munich for months, a special connection between Neuhaus’ advisor, Christian Nerlinger, and Bayern Munich has reportedly led to initial discussions between the two parties:#BayernMunich are really interested in #Gladbach midfielder Florian #Neuhaus. Opened talks with his agent Christian Nerlinger. Two english clubs (Liverpool and Tottenham) have also looked him in the last weeks. #transfers #BMG— Nicolò Schira (@NicoSchira) March 7, 2021With Liverpool and Tottenham Hotspur among the clubs also eyeing Neuhaus, Bayern Munich has allegedly begun to ramp up its efforts. Tz picked up Shira’s report and added more context:It seems Florian Neuhaus is at the top of Bayern’s transfer wish list. Apparently, the flirtation has long since become concrete — the Gladbach midfield star could already wear red in the summer. An old friend on Säbener Straße could play a decisive role: Christian Nerlinger is Neuhaus’ advisor, and the 47-year-old was sporting director at FC Bayern from 2009 to 2012. The official line is short — and as the Italian transfer expert Nicolo Schira reports, Munich has already made use of this. As a result, contact has already been made.Nerlinger, of course, was a former Bayern Munich player as well as being the sporting director. If true, this would be a significant move financially and for the roster in Bavaria. With Neuhaus’ exit fee at Borussia Mönchengladbach rumored to be at €40 million, Bayern Munich likely has the funds to make the move happen, but also has to assess how much sense it makes from a sporting perspective with Thomas Muller, Leon Goretzka, and Joshua Kimmich already manning the 10, 8, and 6 positions respectively. In addition, Bayern Munich also has Jamal Musiala and Marc Roca as part of its midfield mix for next season, while Corentin Tolisso could also be back. Javi Martinez is expected to leave Bavaria and Tiago Dantas’ future is uncertain at best. One other X-factor for Bayern Munich is the development of Torben Rhein. Rhein is one of the jewels of the Bayern Munich youth system and could potentially push his way into the discussion for a first-team spot at some point next season.

Germany Seefeld Training Camp Day 4Photo by Roland Krivec/DeFodi Images via Getty ImagesPer Neuhaus, there is no deal with Bayern Munich on the table.Borussia Mönchengladbach midfielder and Germany international Florian Neuhaus is denying reports that he has a pre-arranged deal with Bayern Munich to make a move after next season. On Saturday, Bild issued a report referencing rumors that that Neuhaus had already reached an agreement to join the Bavarians next summer. The 24-year-old, however, sternly denied that accusation and insisted that he was solely focused on his club career with Die Fohlen.Tz reporter Manuel Bonke fired off a tweet after capturing a quote from Neuhaus earlier today:Florian #Neuhaus dementiert in der @tzmuenchen, dass sein Wechsel zum #FCBayern im Sommer 2022 beschlossene Sache sei: „Ich habe nirgends einen Vertrag unterschrieben außer bei #BorussiaMönchengladbach. Dort fühle ich mich aktuell sehr wohl.“ @kessler_philipp #FCBTransfersommer— Manuel Bonke (@mano_bonke) June 1, 2021Florian #Neuhaus denied in the @tzmuenchen that his move to #FCBayern In the summer of 2022 it was decided: “I have not signed a contract anywhere except with #BorussiaMönchengladbach. I feel very much at home there at the moment.” @kessler_philipp #FCBTransfersommerBecause Bayern Munich is operating under a very conservative approach this offseason, there is little-to-no thought that a move is possible this summer for Neuhaus to Bayern Munich.Next summer, however, many have speculated that Neuhaus could be open to a transfer and might be considered affordable with a rumored €40 million exit clause in his current deal. A real skeptic would also point out that Neuhaus included the caveat of “at the moment” with his statement, but that is just further speculation for another day.For now, Neuhaus seems set for another season of challenging Bayern Munich, not joining them.Liverpool, Real Madrid, and Borussia Dortmund have also been linked to Neuhaus in the past.

Germany v Denmark - International FriendlyPhoto by Roland Krivec/DeFodi Images via Getty ImagesA move to Bayern Munich might not be a sure thing for Florian Neuhaus.Borussia Mönchengladbach midfielder Florian Neuhaus has been heavily linked to a transfer to Bayern Munich in the summer of 2022, but the 24-year-old has went to great lengths of late to distance himself from those rumors. In fact, Neuhaus has made a verbal commitment to Die Fohlen and indicated that another club will have to convince him to move. In speaking to Abendzeitung reporter Maximilian Koch, Neuhaus said his future is not committed to “one club” — a direct reference to the Bayern Munich rumors:Florian #Neuhaus über einen möglichen Wechsel zum #FCBayern: "Ich habe gesagt, dass ich mich in Gladbach wohlfühle. Dieses Gefühl muss ein neuer Klub erstmal überbieten. Ich bin nicht auf einen Verein festgelegt. Das Gesamtpaket muss stimmen. Ich bin offen für alles." #DFBTeam— Maximilian Koch (@Koch_AZ) June 5, 2021Florian #Neuhaus about a possible switch to #FCBayern : “I said that I felt comfortable in Gladbach. A new club has to surpass this feeling first. I am not committed to one club. The overall package has to be right. I am open to everything.” #DFBTeamNeuhaus went a little further — as captured by Sport1’s Florian Plettenberg:Update #Neuhaus @SPORT1: „Ich kann mir auch vorstellen, ins Ausland zu wechseln. I don’t have to go to #FCBayern. For Neuhaus, now is the time to make these statements as he is coming off of an excellent season in the Bundesliga — and a strong performance in Germany’s 1-1 draw with Denmark. Is this a smokescreen or is the native Bavarian really looking at all his options?Regardless, both Liverpool and Real Madrid have been linked to Neuhaus at different points in the last year.

His status as a Bayern target has been in a quandary primarily because of the fee he would require and the fact that he does not currently have a release clause in his contract with ‘Gladbach because it’s expired.Per Sport1’s Florian Plettenberg, Liverpool is now interested in bringing the midfielder to Merseyside. Jurgen Klopp is keen on signing him as a replacement for Georginio Wijnaldum, who has just completed a move to Ligue 1’s Paris Saint-Germain, stepping in at the last minute to beat Barcelona to his signature. Wijnaldum was also a Bayern target for a short window last month.Per Plettenberg, Liverpool has already had discussions with Neuhuas and his representatives about a potential move to Anfield, but no official offers have been lodged yet. For now, the 24-year old is fully focused on the Euros with the German National team, but talks could really intensify once the tournament ends for Die Mannschaft. It’s likely that Liverpool would have to pay at least €40m to acquire his services and even Neuhaus himself had recently said “I can very well imagine a move abroad.” Whether that means Liverpool in the Premier League remains to be seen, but one thing is for certain, Klopp is seriously interested in bringing him to Anfield as a Wijnaldum replacement this summer.Update #Neuhaus: #Klopp wants him, confirmed! Borussia Moenchengladbach v Borussia Dortmund - BundesligaPhoto by Christian Verheyen/Borussia Moenchengladbach via Getty ImagesLiverpool is expected to make a serious offer at some point after the Euros this summer. The onus is on Jurgen Klopp.Per Sport1’s Florian Plettenberg, Liverpool is stepping up their pursuit of Borussia Monchengladbach and German national team midfielder Florian Neuhaus, who Bayern Munich were pursuing for quite some time both last year and earlier this year. Per Plettenberg, a concrete offer for Neuhaus is expected to be lodged by Liverpool at some point after this summer’s European Championships conclude, while the discussions will continue to take place during the tournament.Update #Neuhaus (due to many inquiries): #LFC is definitely a highly interesting option for the player. A concrete offer for him is expected. It's also up to Klopp. However, a decision on his future will be made after the Euros. @SPORT1— Florian Plettenberg (@Plettigoal) June 17, 2021A final decision definitely will not be made until after the Euros, but Jurgen Klopp would also have to sign off on the transfer, which if the fee can be right for Liverpool, it’s highly unlikely that he would object. It’s likely that Liverpool would have to pay at least €40m to acquire his services and even Neuhaus himself had recently said “I can very well imagine a move abroad.” He does not currently have a release clause in his ‘Gladbach contract as it’s past the date which it could've been triggered. His contract with Die Fohlen expires in June 2024.Naturally, Klopp will certainly be looking for a replacement for Georginio Wijnaldum, who’s agreed to join Paris Saint-Germain this summer as the Ligue 1 giants stepped in with a lucrative offer at the final hour, beating Barcelona to the finish line, so to speak. Naby Keita and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain both also struggled greatly with injury problems last season, and likewise captain Jordan Henderson. Aside from their recent purchase of Thiago Alcantara from Bayern, Liverpool has shown a strategy in recent years of investing in younger, more promising talents, which Neuhaus fits the billing perfectly for.Liverpool has also been linked with Leicester City’s Youri Tielemans and AS Roma’s Lorenzo Pellegrini, but Neuhaus, at this point, seems to be where the most concrete interest is. He could be a solid addition to Klopp’s midfield. For Bayern, it’s unfortunate to have missed out on Neuhaus, but they were never prepared to pay as much as Neuhaus for him. At one point, Bayern was looking at the possibility of using Corentin Tolisso as potential leverage for Neuhaus, but he’s now on Juventus’ radar as Massimiliano Allegri is keen on signing the Frenchmen if he can’t realistically get Manuel Locatelli from Sassuolo. As far as incoming transfers, Bayern has already signed Dayot Upamecano from RB Leipzig and Omar Richards from Reading FC. In midfield, Mickael Cuisance will be returning from his loan spell at Marseille, so Bayern will need to decide what they want to do with him. Elsewhere in Bayern’s midfield, Javi Martinez will be leaving the club and combining that with Tolisso’s uncertain future, Bayern could very well be in the market for an affordable, central midfielder this summer.

Germany Portraits - UEFA Euro 2020Photo by Boris Streubel - UEFA/UEFA via Getty ImagesCould Bayern Munich still make a move for a midfielder?According to SPOX journalist Kerry Hau, Bayern Munich still has interest in both Borussia Mönchengladbach star Florian Neuhaus and Stade Rennais up-and-comer Eduardo Camavinga. The problem for the Bavarians, however, is that they just do not have the financial capacity to play what it would take to pry either Neuhaus or Camavinga from their current clubs.- MF: Es besteht nach wie vor Interesse an #Camavinga und #Neuhaus, aber auch hier fehlt die finanzielle Bereitschaft in diesem Sommer. Man hofft auf den Durchbruch von #Roca unter Nagelsmann. Und: Die Verlängerung von #Goretzka hat aktuell ohnehin Priorität.— Kerry Hau (@kerry_hau) July 1, 2021MF: There is still interest in #Camavinga and #Neuhaus , but here too there is a lack of financial willingness this summer. One hopes for the breakthrough of #Roca under Nagelsmann. And: the extension of #Goretzka currently has priority anyway. What is unclear in Hau’s reporting is if a contract extension for Leon Goretzka or an emergence by Marc Roca would deter the Bavarians from making a run at Neuhaus or Camavinga next summer when the club should have more room in the budget. With Corentin Tolisso also not a lock to be on the roster this season, Bayern Munich could be looking for some young players on campus — or some cheap options on the transfer market — to bolster the midfield group if the opportunity presents itself.

Norway v Italy - FIFA 2026 World Cup Qualifier Photo by Claudio Villa - FIGC/FIGC via Getty Images Germany vs. France...are you ready? Are Bayern, Real eyeing Donnarumma? (Gazzetta dello Sport via @iMiaSanMia)Are Bayern Munich and Real Madrid really chasing Paris Saint-Germain goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma? According to Gazzetta dello Sport journalist Carlo Laudisa, the two power clubs are of interest to Donnarumma as well: Bayern and Real Madrid are two clubs that Gianluigi Donnarumma would be open to move to. After winning the Champions League with PSG, the 26-year old goalkeeper is considering a new challenge in a different league. PSG contract expires next year. Premier League clubs are also in the running.Donnarumma, who really thrust himself onto the scene during the EURO 2020 (really 2021) competition. For Bayern Munich, Manuel Neuer is expected to retire after the 2025/26 campaign, but the club did also recently invest in Jonas Urbig (who has looked great) and Daniel Peretz (who is expected to be loaned or sold this summer). In addition, Sven Ulreich is reportedly on the verge of inking a deal to make him the squad’s No.3 goalkeeper, while Alexander Nübel is still in the picture, despite being on loan at VfB Stuttgart. In a nutshell, if there was a time that Bayern Munich might be reluctant to invest in a top-tier goalkeeper, it might be now, especially given how the team reportedly feels about Urbig’s future. Woltemade an option for the future with Bayern (Sport Bild’s Christian Falk)Bayern Munich likes VfB Stuttgart striker Nick Woltemade, but would be reluctant to buy him because of the presence of Harry Kane:Nick Woltemade is a question for the future as far as Bayern are concerned.
