I am a 19-year-old girl with a Moroccan mother and a French father, and I have embraced Islam. I met a 28-year-old Algerian man who was Muslim, and we were planning to get married. He spoke a lot about Islam, saying that we could only marry if I embraced his religion willingly, not under any compulsion to become a Muslim for his sake.

Initially, his words seemed funny and ridiculous to me. Since my mother, despite being Moroccan, never talked to me about Islam and the Quran, she never taught me Arabic or Moroccan cuisine. I was not familiar with Moroccan culture and traditions, which are often associated with Islam. However, I later visited Morocco several times and became acquainted with its culture and other aspects. Yet, I was not willing to accept my mother's cultural roots because, living in France, I was influenced by media that presented a negative image of Islam and Muslims. I neither liked to become a Muslim nor had any interest in understanding its religious and cultural aspects.

The Quran Transformed My Life

Gradually, I found tranquility in the Quran and tried to learn more about it. I realized that this book has a unique glory and greatness that transformed my life. I wonder why my mother never taught me about Islam and never mentioned this magnificent and content-rich book. Perhaps she prefers freedom and being unrestricted. I dare not discuss this matter with her, thinking she might react with anger.

If I tell her, or worse, if I stand before her with a headscarf, it might not be a pleasant encounter. However, despite my love for my mother, I do not want to end up in hell. I want to learn everything about Islam and read because I truly want the merciful God to forgive all my sins and help me guard myself against sins.

According to Rahyafte (a comprehensive platform for reverts and Muslim missionaries), a newly reverted Muslim girl shared her experiences about life and the reasons for her conversion to Islam:

"My mother is Brazilian and my father is American. I grew up mostly in São Paulo, Brazil, and also spent some time in the United States. My parents aren't very religious, and my father isn't religious at all. My mother grew up in a Catholic family, and sometimes we attended Catholic Church. There was a period in my life when I thought no religion was good, believing that religions only divided people. But then I went to Morocco, where I truly became interested in Islam. One of my teachers invited me to attend a conference in Spain, where I met a religious scholar. There, I heard truths about Islam that I had never encountered before.

For three days, I contemplated converting to Islam. I was conflicted within myself. In my heart, I knew the truth and fully believed in it, but my mind still had many obstacles. I feared my family's and friends' reactions. I was afraid they wouldn't understand me and would question my conversion because of all the stereotypes about Islam in the media, as they didn't have a correct understanding of Islam.

On the other hand, I was scared that I wouldn't be able to live up to being a Muslim. When I was in Morocco, I called them and told them about my conversion. They didn’t accept it, thinking it was just a phase of youthful foolishness. However, my mother said something beautiful: 'If Islam helps you feel closer to God, then I’m happy for you!'

I believe Islam helped me let go of negative thoughts and disregard things that were unnecessary and unimportant. And I definitely think Islam helped me build a better relationship with my family. I feel that my purpose in life is much clearer now. Before, I didn’t think I had the right purpose.

At the beginning of my journey to Islam, I had a lot of fears, more than necessary. But I was mistaken. When you become a Muslim, you are still yourself, and change is natural. Change comes from within the heart and is a natural process. This change brings you closer to God, and everything you lose are just barriers between you and Him."
