Japanese Yen Strengthens Sharply Amid Intervention Expectations

As the USD/JPY chart shows, the exchange rate fell sharply, reaching its lowest level since early November 2025.

The sudden strengthening of the yen has been driven both by expectations ahead of the upcoming Bank of Japan meeting and by growing speculation about a possible currency intervention, which could be carried out jointly by the Japanese authorities and the US Federal Reserve.

According to media reports:
→ on Friday, the New York Fed took specific actions that were interpreted as potential precursors to an actual intervention, providing the first bearish impulse;
→ on Sunday, Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi stated that the government would take “necessary steps” against speculative market movements — reinforcing the initial momentum at the market open on Monday.

Technical Analysis of the USD/JPY Chart

Last week, when analysing movements in the dollar–yen exchange rate, we identified a long-term ascending channel and also:
→ highlighted a number of bearish signals;
→ suggested that the lower boundary of the channel was at risk of a bearish break.

Notably, after that analysis, another bearish signal emerged on the USD/JPY chart — a bull trap (marked by the arrow) above the 159 level — followed by a break below the channel’s lower boundary.

At the same time, if a parallel channel of equal width is projected lower, its bottom boundary appears to be providing some support, slowing the pace of the decline.

It cannot be ruled out that emotions will subside and the market may attempt a rebound — for example, towards the bearish gap area around 155.5. However, the aggressive nature of the USD/JPY sell-off suggests that sellers are taking control after many months of sustained upward movement.

Nasdaq 100 Advances Ahead of Tech Giants’ Earnings

As early as tomorrow, after the close of the main trading session, quarterly results will be released by Microsoft (MSFT), Meta Platforms (META) and Tesla (TSLA), with Apple (AAPL) scheduled to report on Thursday.

As the chart shows, the Nasdaq 100 index (US Tech 100 mini on FXOpen) climbed today to its highest level since early November, rising above 25,900. Since the start of the week, the index has gained around 1.8%. This appears to reflect a shift in market sentiment:
→ Geopolitical risks are fading. Market participants seem to have adapted to the news flow surrounding tariffs and Greenland. After the initial shock, current political rhetoric is increasingly viewed as a negotiating stance rather than a genuine threat to business.
→ Confidence in market leaders. Prices are factoring in expectations that tech giants will outline roadmaps showing how their record AI spending will begin to generate net profits as early as this year.

Technical Analysis of the Nasdaq 100 Chart

Price action in the Nasdaq 100 index (US Tech 100 mini on FXOpen) points to demand-side dominance:
→ the downward trajectory seen between 16 and 21 January was broken by bulls on the 22nd, with a spike in volatility (visible on the ATR indicator) highlighting a sharp change in market behaviour;
→ recent fluctuations have formed an ascending channel (shown in blue);
→ the market has confidently recovered from the bearish gap seen at the start of the week;
→ the broad bullish candle on Monday, 26 January, signals a demand imbalance, with the rally zone showing signs of support (marked by a rectangle).

From the supply-side perspective:
→ the move above the 13 January high could turn out to be a false bullish breakout (another one, judging by Nasdaq 100 price action over recent months);
→ price is currently hovering near the upper boundary of the existing channel.

A modest technical pullback in the coming days cannot be ruled out, although the key driver is likely to be market reactions to upcoming corporate earnings.

The US Dollar Index (DXY) Falls to Its Lowest Level Since September

As the DXY chart shows, the US dollar index is trading today at its lowest level since September 2025. From this month’s peak, the decline has exceeded 2%.

Why is the dollar weakening?

→ The Fed factor. The interest rate decision is due tomorrow. Markets are expecting dovish rhetoric from Jerome Powell to offset economic risks stemming from tariff wars. It cannot be ruled out that the Fed Chair may soften his stance under unprecedented pressure from the White House administration, including threats of criminal prosecution.
→ Loss of safe-haven status. The dollar is losing appeal as a defensive asset amid geopolitical tensions (the US–EU dispute over Greenland and strained relations with Canada). Capital is actively flowing out of fiat currencies into real assets, as confirmed by yesterday’s historic breakout in gold prices above $5,000.

That said, the technical picture offers some grounds for optimism among bulls.

Technical analysis of the DXY chart

On 20 January, when analysing the US Dollar Index (DXY), we:
→ updated the descending channel (marked in red);
→ suggested that the downtrend could continue, with a move towards the channel median.

However, bears exceeded our expectations and, after testing the upper boundary on 21 January (as shown by the arrow), pushed the price towards the lower boundary of the channel, which tends to act as support.

Moreover, the DXY index is now hovering near a long-term support zone from which the price rebounded twice in the second half of 2025.
This suggests that the aggressive downward momentum may be running out of steam, with the market likely to shift into a wait-and-see mode ahead of the Fed’s decision. Be prepared for spikes in volatility tomorrow between 22:00 and 22:30 GMT+3.

EUR/USD Climbs Above 1.2000 After Trump’s Remarks

Expectations of lower Federal Reserve interest rates, recession risks, and the negative fallout from the US stance on Greenland have been among the factors acting as bearish drivers for the dollar in recent weeks.

Additional pressure came from signals that the US may be willing to sell dollars to help Japan strengthen the yen. Yesterday’s comments from Donald Trump then gave the market fresh momentum.

“The dollar is doing great,” Trump replied when asked by a reporter whether he thought it had fallen too sharply recently. Does this mean the president is comfortable with the national currency having lost around 9% during the first year of his term?

Trump’s words triggered a sharp weakening of the US dollar against other currencies. In particular, EUR/USD rose above the psychological 1.2000 level for the first time since 2021.

Technical Analysis of the EUR/USD chart

EUR/USD price action towards the end of January formed an ascending channel, within which the upper boundary is acting as resistance.
→ As shown by the first arrow, a long upper wick appeared on the hourly candle, signalling increased selling pressure.
→ The second arrow highlights a similar candle, providing further evidence of seller activity.

The RSI indicator has remained above the 50 level in recent days, confirming the bullish bias, while at the same time creating conditions for a potential pullback.
Should a correction occur, it would allow the channel’s median line to act as support — a level that previously functioned as resistance before being broken.

Given the rapidly shifting news backdrop and frequent comments from officials, further spikes in volatility across currency markets cannot be ruled out.

For the First Time In History, the Price of Silver Has Exceeded $115

The weakness of the US dollar amid the White House’s ambiguous policy stance, along with other factors (including geopolitics and industrial demand for silver), has led to the XAG/USD quote rising above $115 this week.

Since the beginning of the year, the price of an ounce of silver has increased by more than 50%, continuing the steep upward trend that began back in 2025.

It seems the bull market in precious metals is unstoppable, but the chart is sending important signals that cast doubt on this view.

Technical Analysis of the XAG/USD Chart

Price fluctuations are forming a broad ascending channel. Pay attention to the following:
→ A surge in volatility, clearly visible on the ATR indicator. It began to form after the psychological level of $100 was breached.
→ A sharp drop from A to B (approximately 12% within a single day) from the upper boundary of the channel to its median. Ordinary retail traders do not have the power to generate such an effect.

Given the above, it is reasonable to assume that after silver surpassed the psychological level of $100 per ounce, demand took on a frenzy-like character. Meanwhile, “smart money” is using the broad market to take profits on long positions after a staggering rise (more than +200% over the past six months). In other words, this points to a distribution phase in terms of Richard Wyckoff’s method.

If false bullish breakouts of resistance levels appear on the chart, followed by successful breaks of support, this will add weight to the argument behind the idea outlined above.

USD/CAD Falls Below the 2025 Low

Yesterday, financial markets were closely watching statements from central banks regarding interest rates, including the Federal Reserve and the Bank of Canada. According to Forex Factory:
→ The Federal Reserve kept the Federal Funds Rate at 3.75% by a majority vote. “The economy has once again surprised us with its strength,” Powell said at the press conference. The Fed Chair also added that “our policy is in a good place”.
→ The Bank of Canada left the Overnight Rate unchanged at 2.25%. In its official statement, significant attention was paid to the impact of uncertainty surrounding the trade agreement between Canada, the United States and Mexico (CUSMA).

Although there were no surprises and the central banks’ decisions matched analysts’ forecasts, the reaction of the USD/CAD pair was quite dynamic. After a spike in volatility, the exchange rate fell below the 2025 low. Moreover, on higher-timeframe charts, a bearish break of support is visible, with that support running through the lows of 2023–2025.

Technical Analysis of the USD/CAD Chart

On 19 January, when analysing the USD/CAD chart, we:
→ highlighted important signs of bullish weakness on the chart;
→ suggested that bears might seize the initiative and attempt a break of the local ascending channel (shown in blue).

Indeed, a bearish breakout occurred, after which the price formed a trajectory resembling an accelerating plunge (approximately −2.7% over 10 days). At the same time, there are grounds to assess the market within the context of a long-term downtrend (shown in red).

In this context, we see that the price is near the lower boundary of the channel, which may act as support and slow the decline. However, even if bulls attempt to form a rebound, they are likely to face significant difficulties, because:
→ the price fell aggressively from the median to the lower boundary and broke the December low with virtually no local recoveries;
→ the area around the 1.3650 level appears to be a key resistance zone.

Thus, the USD/CAD exchange rate reflects the broader January trend, in which the US dollar is under considerable pressure due to geopolitical and other factors. Notably, even Powell’s comment about the “strength of the economy” failed to support the dollar. This suggests that the market may currently be driven not by past successes of the US economy, but by concerns about future uncertainty.

Meta Platforms (META) Shares Rise Above $700 After Earnings Release

Yesterday, Meta Platforms published its fourth-quarter 2025 earnings report, which made a strong impression. In after-hours trading, META shares surged by more than 10% at one point, reaching around $740.

Why META Shares Are Rising

The company not only met analysts’ expectations but significantly exceeded them:
→ Earnings per share (EPS): actual $8.88 (expected $8.19–8.21), up 11% year-on-year.
→ Revenue: actual $59.9bn (forecast around $58.35bn).

In addition, the media highlighted several positive factors:
→ A strong outlook for 2026.
→ A high operating margin of around 41%, demonstrating strong business efficiency despite substantial spending.
→ Continued growth in advertising services: the company has integrated AI into ad delivery, with growth seen both in ad pricing (+6%) and the number of impressions (+18%).

A particularly important development was Mark Zuckerberg’s statement that the Reality Labs division is expected to pass its peak loss this year. This reassured investors concerned about prolonged cash burn related to capital expenditure.

Technical Analysis of the META Chart

On higher timeframes, the price remains in an uptrend. In January, the lower boundary of the long-term channel once again acted as support (indicated by the arrow).
In pre-market trading, META is quoted around $715–720. If the main session opens in this area, two observations appear especially important:
1 → The price is breaking upwards out of a descending channel (shown in red), which can be interpreted as an intermediate correction — a classic bull flag — within the broader prevailing uptrend.
2 → The price is moving above a key area that includes the psychological $700 level, which has acted as both support and resistance since July 2025. This zone may now provide a base for bulls in their attempt to move towards the median of the long-term channel.

Microsoft (MSFT) Shares Post a Record Decline

On Wednesday, after the close of the regular trading session, Microsoft (MSFT) released its quarterly earnings report, which exceeded analysts’ expectations:
→ Earnings per share: actual $4.14, forecast $3.90;
→ Gross revenue: actual $81.2bn, forecast $80.3bn;
→ Operating profit: up 21%.

Despite the strong results, MSFT shares suffered a dramatic sell-off of around 10% by the close of yesterday’s trading. According to media reports, this was the largest one-day drop in Microsoft’s share price on record, with the company losing roughly $360bn in market capitalisation.

Why MSFT Shares Collapsed

Market participants were most likely disappointed by the following factors:
→ A sharp rise in capital expenditure: capex surged by 66% to $37.5bn as Microsoft continued to invest heavily in data centres and AI infrastructure, while the timing of meaningful returns on these investments remains uncertain.
→ Slowing growth in the cloud computing segment.

Technical Analysis of Microsoft (MSFT) Shares

When analysing the MSFT chart on 15 January, we identified a key ascending channel reflecting the stock’s long-term price structure. At that time, we suggested that the market might find a temporary balance ahead of the earnings release.

Since then, although volatility persisted, the price showed an ability to recover from 22 January onwards, indicating that buyers were attempting to wrest control from sellers.
Yesterday’s record decline significantly altered the picture, but two factors are worth noting:
1 → The price fell below the 1 May low, entering the area of a broad bullish gap located above the psychological $400 level.
2 → In 2026, the market has been forming a descending channel (shown in red), with the price now reaching its lower boundary.

It is reasonable to assume that these two factors could act as support. The structure of yesterday’s candle supports this view: the session closed well above the low, and trading volumes were the highest in several years. This suggests active buying interest, with the price rebounding from around $422 to $433.

As a result, it is possible that the initial emotional reaction may fade and MSFT shares will avoid a further acceleration of the downtrend. However, a meaningful shift back to a bullish market structure would require strong fundamental catalysts.

Learn how the Volume Profile Visible Range (VPVR) indicator works and how traders use it to analyze market volume and price activity in forex, stocks, indices, and commodities.
Volume is one of the cornerstones of technical analysis. It measures how many assets or contracts are traded within a specific period, giving traders a sense of the strength behind price movements. However, to gain deeper insight, traders need to go beyond the total number — and that’s where the Volume Profile comes in.

📊 In this video, we explore one of the key tools in volume analysis: the Volume Profile Visible Range (VPVR) indicator. Also known simply as VPVR, this tool provides a detailed view of volume distribution across different price levels, helping traders make more informed decisions.

This video covers:
🔸What Is the Volume Profile Visible Range (VPVR) Indicator?
🔸Components of the VPVR: Price Ranges, Volume Bars, Point of Control, and Value Area

Silver Prices Collapse as the Market Shifts Phase

According to media reports, the silver market has experienced its largest price drop since 1980.

Notably, it is difficult to identify a single powerful fundamental catalyst that could clearly explain the move from the 29 January high near $120 to today’s low around $72 (approximately −40%). The geopolitical backdrop remains tense, with risks related to Iran, Greenland, Ukraine and other regions still very much in play.

The media point to a cascade of long-position liquidations, a view that aligns with the analytical conclusions of our article “For the First Time In History, the Price of Silver Has Exceeded $115”, published five days ago.

At that time, we:
→ reaffirmed the primary ascending channel and highlighted a surge in volatility during the A→B move from the upper boundary of the channel;
→ suggested that “smart money” was using broad market participation to lock in profits on long positions after an extraordinary rally (more than +200% over the past six months). In Wyckoff terms, this corresponded to a distribution phase.

These assumptions were subsequently confirmed by:
→ a brief push above the A high (the UTAD pattern — Upthrust After Distribution);
→ a sharp increase in bearish pressure. As a result, around the turn of the week, XAG/USD decisively broke not only the channel median but also its lower boundary.

Within the framework of Wyckoff methodology, this price action in silver can be interpreted as follows:
→ “smart money” has completed the distribution of long positions and shifted to selling into the market;
→ retail traders’ positions are being liquidated en masse, accelerating the decline.

In other words, following the Distribution phase, the market has entered the Mark-Down phase. The speed and violence of recent price moves — making timely decision-making particularly difficult — further support this interpretation.

Therefore, even if silver attempts a rebound under the current conditions of extreme oversoldness, any recovery is likely to face a strong resistance zone in the $87.5–95 area. This is where bears previously held a clear advantage while breaking the long-term ascending channel.

Nasdaq 100 Opens Lower Following Big Tech Earnings

Last week saw the release of quarterly earnings from Microsoft (MSFT), Meta Platforms (META), Tesla (TSLA) and Apple (AAPL). At the opening of Monday’s session — today, 2 February — the Nasdaq 100 index (US Tech 100 mini on FXOpen) opened with a bearish gap, sliding towards the 25,100 level.

Why Is the Nasdaq 100 Falling?

While many of the Big Tech earnings reports were strong, the broader market reaction suggests that:
→ investors have become increasingly sceptical about massive capital expenditure (capex) on artificial intelligence, as seen in Microsoft’s case;
→ even solid results, such as those delivered by Apple, are no longer triggering rallies.

It appears that market participants are placing greater emphasis on uncertainties related to:
→ the new Fed Chair;
→ the risk of another US government shutdown;
→ rising geopolitical tensions (with Greenland, Iran and Ukraine potentially joined by Cuba).

Technical Analysis of the Nasdaq 100 Chart

When analysing Nasdaq 100 price action (US Tech 100 mini on FXOpen) six days ago, we:
→ identified an ascending channel (shown in blue);
→ considered a scenario involving another false bullish breakout following the move above the 13 January high;
→ anticipated a modest technical correction.

Since then:
→ the price has marginally extended the channel, while its slope has remained unchanged;
→ the index declined from the upper boundary to the lower boundary of the channel, with the median acting as resistance (as indicated by the arrow);
→ this was followed by a bearish break below the lower boundary.

As a result, Nasdaq 100 price action can now reasonably be viewed as a corrective phase, with the potential to evolve into a downward trajectory (shown by the red lines).
If bears are to maintain control, it would be logical for them to assert dominance over the area around 25,500 — the zone where the ascending channel was broken.

In this episode of Market Insights, Gary Thomson unpacks the strategic implications of the week’s most critical events driving global markets.

👉 Key topics covered in this episode:

🔸 What Happened in the Markets Last Week
Gold has surged to record levels in early 2026, driven by strong investment demand and heightened global uncertainty. With major banks revising forecasts higher and some eyeing $6,000, the rally is reshaping expectations for the precious metal. Is it a bubble or a rally supported by strong fundamentals? Let’s discuss!

🔸Central Bank Meetings
This week’s market focus is on central bank decisions, with the RBA widely expected to hike rates for the first time since 2023, while the BoE is likely to hold rates steady. AUD/USD Rises Following RBA Decision

As the AUD/USD chart shows, the Australian dollar is holding above the psychological 0.700 level today after a bullish impulse triggered by the market’s reaction to the Reserve Bank of Australia’s (RBA) decision to raise the Cash Rate from 3.60% to 3.85%.

According to RBA Governor Michele Bullock, inflation (3.8%) remains too high, and the Bank “cannot allow it to get out of control again”. At the same time, the possibility of another rate hike in May has been left open.

The prospect of a tighter monetary policy stance should support the Australian dollar. However, the key question is whether AUD/USD can extend its advance and break above the important A peak from 29 January — the pair’s highest level since February 2023.

Technical Analysis of the AUD/USD Chart

Volatile price action in January has formed a broad ascending channel originating in November 2025. Within this structure:
→ bullish momentum accelerated on 19 January following a break above local resistance (shown in red);
→ the A peak confirmed the upper boundary of the channel as resistance;
→ the median (shown in blue) continues to act as support for the rising market.

It is worth noting that the ATR indicator is at its highest level in around nine months. This may point to increased activity by “smart money”, while the aggressive bearish rejection from the upper boundary could hint at their intentions.

As a result, the current rise in AUD/USD appears to be an initial emotional response to the news. There is a risk that the momentum may fade as the price approaches the highs near the A peak, where “smart money” could resume selling.

Gold Prices Recover After a Catastrophic Sell-Off

Yesterday, while analysing the silver price chart, we described a fundamental shift in supply and demand dynamics that likely became the key driver behind the sharp decline in prices.

This same reasoning can likely be applied to the gold market, which experienced a synchronous and dramatic sell-off. From the A peak on 29 January near $5,570, the gold price (XAU/USD) collapsed to the B low on 2 February below $4,420 — a drop of around 20%:
→ “Smart money” locked in profits on long positions and switched to selling at market;
→ retail speculators were forced to close long positions at a loss, while the liquidation of previously leveraged trades accelerated the cascading decline.

On 26 January, when analysing gold price movements, we:
→ highlighted that the market was extremely overbought;
→ noted, however, that abandoning bullish expectations prematurely would be inappropriate without a major catalyst.

It now appears that the A→B collapse may have been precisely such an event.

Technical Analysis of the XAU/USD Chart

The previously identified channel was extended upwards by the abnormal surge in XAU/USD prices. Within this structure:
→ the A peak formed in overbought territory above the upper boundary of the channel;
→ the B low developed in oversold territory below its lower boundary;
→ during the sell-off on 30 January, the channel median briefly acted as support (as indicated by the arrow).

It is therefore reasonable to assume that the current rebound from extreme oversold conditions may encounter resistance formed by:
→ the median of the channel;
→ key Fibonacci retracement levels (50% and 61.8%).

Looking several weeks ahead, it is possible that XAU/USD may stabilise in the lower half of this channel. At the same time, the long-term outlook remains constructive: JPMorgan analysts have raised their year-end gold price forecast to $6,300 per ounce, while Deutsche Bank expects gold to reach $6,000 per ounce.
