LG opens a massive battery factory in Lansing, Michigan

LG Energy Solution has officially opened a huge new battery cell manufacturing plant in Lansing, Michigan, expanding local production for electric vehicles. If you follow where the automotive industry is heading, this massive site is designed to become one of the biggest production hubs in the country.

Even though the federal administration frequently questions clean energy initiatives, Interior Secretary Doug Burgum attended the launch event to praise the project.
The new site directly supports the ongoing transition to electric vehicles by building vital components right on American soil.

This facility is part of a larger industrial push across the nation. Much like fellow South Korean manufacturer DeltaX, which is also setting up its own battery production plants in the US, companies are investing heavily despite ongoing political debates.

Big investments change the landscape faster than political arguments ever could.
Concrete factories outweigh political noise.

Predicting EV battery life from Palo Alto

An 18-year-old student from Palo Alto has developed a new mathematical model to predict the health and lifespan of aging electric vehicle batteries. This discovery turns complex battery degradation data into a reliable estimate for the secondary car market. ⚑️

Right now, checking a used battery is difficult because manufacturers often lock these metrics behind proprietary systems. Dealers usually rely on specific, expensive equipment to run these diagnostics. This model cuts through that barrier by using accessible data to estimate remaining battery capacity. πŸ”‹

Current industry standards rely on a manufacturer's vague "battery health" readout. This new approach provides a more transparent tool for anyone looking to buy a used electric vehicle. πŸ“ˆ

A simpler way to value the heart of an electric car.

120-tonne electric haulers at Malmberget mine

LKAB has successfully put two massive 120-tonne battery-electric Scania trucks to work in its Malmberget iron ore mine.

These vehicles are tackling the heavy lifting at depths reaching 1,250 meters. Since they started, they have already moved over 100,000 tonnes of iron ore. This is a significant step forward from the standard diesel-powered haulers that LKAB used for years in the same tunnels.

β–ͺ️ Immediate torque: Unlike diesel engines, electric motors deliver full power instantly, which helps when climbing steep ramps out of the deep mine.
β–ͺ️ Cleaner air: These trucks produce no exhaust fumes, removing the need for the massive, energy-intensive ventilation systems required by traditional diesel engines.
β–ͺ️ Reduced wear: The simplified electric drivetrain has fewer moving parts, which lowers the maintenance burden in the harsh, dusty underground environment.

While traditional diesel trucks have dominated mining operations for decades, this move to electric power changes how deep-earth logistics work. By cutting out the combustion process, the mine no longer needs the complex, non-stop air scrubbing that previously kept the tunnels breathable for the crew.

Heavy industry is finally finding cleaner ways to move mountains.

PG&E will pay up to $17,000 to use your electric car as a home battery

Drivers in California can now receive up to $17,000 in incentives by using their electric vehicle as a backup power source through an expanded program from PG&E.

The technology is called V2X, or Vehicle-to-Everything. Think of it as turning your car into a mobile power bank for your house. When your local grid needs a boost, your parked car feeds energy back into your home systems. You can now enroll specific models from Tesla, Kia, Volvo, Polestar, and Nissan.

The utility has brought in Bidirectional Energy and PowerFlex to manage the technology. Owners have until June 30, 2027, to sign up and start claiming these payments.

For comparison, purchasing a standalone home battery like a Tesla Powerwall often costs around $10,000 or more, excluding installation. This program effectively lets you use the battery you already own for driving to solve your home energy needs while getting paid.

It is a clever way to turn a parked asset into a personal power plant.

Xiaomi introduces its first 3nm AI chip

Xiaomi has officially unveiled its first custom-designed 3nm high-performance AI chip. This technology is engineered to power advanced autonomous driving features in the company's future electric vehicles. 🏎️

If you are curious about the "3nm" label, it refers to the size of the tiny transistors that make up the chip. A smaller size allows engineers to pack more power into a compact space, leading to faster data processing without draining the car's battery. By developing its own silicon, Xiaomi ensures the hardware is perfectly optimized for its specific software. ⚑

Currently, the popular Xiaomi SU7 relies on third-party hardware, specifically the Nvidia Drive Orin platform, to handle its self-driving tasks. Shifting to in-house production allows Xiaomi to reduce its dependence on external suppliers, much like the approach Tesla used when it began creating its own custom processors to manage its autopilot systems. πŸ”‹

Developing the engine of the car's brain is a major power move.

Electric heavy trucks mining 8,500 feet deep in Sudbury

Glencore Canada has fully transitioned to an all-electric operation at its nickel and copper mine in Sudbury, Ontario, reaching 8,500 feet below the surface.

Deep mining usually relies on heavy diesel engines that create hazardous fumes and extreme heat in narrow tunnels. This forces mines to run massive, energy-intensive ventilation systems just to keep the air safe for workers. By replacing these diesel machines with electric ones, the site reduces both emissions and the need for complex cooling and air circulation infrastructure.

This approach replaces the reliance on the heavy diesel-burning machinery that previously defined the extraction process at this specific location.

This change demonstrates that heavy industrial work deep underground can function cleanly.

Deep mining is finally ditching the diesel.

Geely is developing a 1,000-volt charging system

Geely is currently working on a new car platform that runs on 1,000 volts to drastically cut down your wait time at the charging station. This high-voltage setup allows for much faster energy transfer, meaning you can spend less time plugged in and more time on the road.

The company has already put this theory to the test in their labs. They successfully used charging stations with a peak output of 1,500 kW in their latest trials.

To put that speed in perspective, consider that today’s fastest "ultra-fast" public chargers for vehicles like the Tesla or Porsche typically max out between 350 and 400 kW. Pumping 1,500 kW into a battery is like switching from a garden hose to a fire hydrant, allowing for significantly shorter stops than what most electric vehicle owners are used to today.

Refueling an EV might soon take as little time as grabbing a cup of coffee.

Rivian Launches Autonomy+ for R1S and R1T

Rivian has rolled out its Autonomy+ system, allowing its electric vehicles to navigate between mapped points across the U.S. and Canada without constant human input. This new capability is arriving for the company's newest R1S and R1T models, marking a major step for the brand in the automated transport market.

This point-to-point system uses sensors to manage steering, acceleration, and braking while obeying traffic lights and stop signs.
The technology allows owners to input an address, sit back, and let the vehicle drive itself on mapped routes, changing the driver’s role to that of a supervisor.
Rivian will also bring this system to its upcoming R2 SUV by the end of this year via an over-the-air update, which is simply a wireless software patch that adds new features to the car.

When considering the price, Rivian will charge $49.99 per month or a one-time fee of $2,500. This places the system in direct competition with other automakers:
πŸ”Ή Tesla currently charges $99 per month for its Full Self-Driving (Supervised) system.
πŸ”Ή Mercedes has set a price of $3,950 for a three-year subscription to its MB.Drive Assist Pro, which still requires the driver to keep at least one hand on the steering wheel.

It is a practical move toward letting cars handle the more tedious parts of a daily commute.

The race for hands-free driving is clearly heating up.

SANY ships 800 electric heavy machines in one month

Last month, SANY successfully delivered 200 heavy-duty electric haul trucks alongside 600 electric wheel loaders. This rapid output underscores how quickly industrial electrification is scaling in China compared to other regions.

These massive machines are typically found in mines and large construction sites. Switching to battery power helps operators cut down on expensive diesel fuel and reduces complex maintenance. Electric motors have fewer moving parts, which keeps costs down and reliability high over the long haul.

This manufacturing pace creates a clear gap between the East and North America. While SANY manages a massive rollout in weeks, fleets across North America are still largely hesitant to move away from diesel engines. They often point to charging infrastructure and upfront costs as barriers, while the Chinese market shows that large-scale electric deployment is already here. The speed of this shift is hard to ignore. πŸš€

Industrial transport is finally unplugging from the pump.

Electric cars displace $20 billion in oil

Between March and August 2026, electric vehicle fleets globally avoided 200 million barrels of crude oil, worth an estimated $20 billion. ⚑ The energy think tank Ember notes that this shift provided economic protection for oil-importing nations during the ongoing Hormuz energy crisis.

China accounted for the largest savings at $14 billion, while the EU saved $3.1 billion. The transition to electric power reduced exposure to volatile oil prices and potential supply disruptions.

While adoption grows globally, the United States is lagging. Fifteen nations, including India and Brazil, have surpassed the United States in the share of new vehicles sold that are fully electric this year. Battery electric vehicles accounted for just 6% of light-duty vehicle sales in the United States during the first eight months of 2026, a result of the removal of federal tax credits.
