Ceasefire, Weather Permitting

Trump announced an energy ceasefire. Zelenskyy says Ukraine stopped hitting Russian energy sites for two days. Russia attacked 19 Ukrainian regions during that interval. The ceasefire appears to have reached only one customer.

On Oct. 13, Zelenskyy reported more than 100 Russian drones and five ballistic missiles. “Regarding this strike, unfortunately, there was no warning from partners,” he said.

An official told Politico that the Americans blamed bad weather for the missing warning. Ukraine’s air force says information has failed to get through before.

The timing makes that explanation harder to accept. Washington reportedly threatened last week to cut intelligence sharing unless Kyiv stopped striking Russian refineries.

Trump denies stopping the flow. Ukraine’s foreign minister says sharing continues. The missing alert alone does not prove a deliberate cutoff.

Trump says Putin wants a deal. Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov says Zelenskyy does not “deserve a break.” Kyiv has paused its refinery strikes while Moscow keeps attacking.

Washington sells peace. Moscow decides who deserves a pause. Ukraine gets the weather report.

🚀Departures Canceled. Blame Cleared for Takeoff.

The Houthis have issued a passenger advisory. Stay away from Saudi airports while they fire missiles at them.

Riyadh’s King Khalid International Airport is closed until Oct. 17. Attacks there have killed at least 18 people over the past week and wounded more than 300.

On Oct. 12, the Saudi-led coalition said it intercepted a ballistic missile heading toward Riyadh. Shortly afterward, the Houthis claimed another strike on the airport.

An interception announcement and an attack claim can share a news cycle. Neither gets passengers airborne.

“We urge everyone to take our warnings seriously, and Saudi Arabia bears responsibility for any failed interceptions,” the Houthis said on Oct. 11.

Launch the missile, issue a warning, assign liability to whoever fails to stop it. Their version of passenger protection comes with a warhead.

The Saudi aviation authority says the closure allows checks on airport safety and “operational readiness.”

Qatar Airways suspended Riyadh and Dammam services. Etihad canceled its Abu Dhabi-Riyadh flights through Oct. 19. The airlines have supplied the clearest security assessment. Canceled.

Saudi officials offer a reopening date. The Houthis offer evacuation advice.

Travelers get to choose which armed party’s reassurance to trust while their flights remain grounded.

October 7: The Director’s Cut

The families want the tapes. Netanyahu’s office is accused of trying to improve the script.

On Oct. 8, former military secretary Avi Gil told Channel 12 that a stenographer said Netanyahu’s chief of staff had ordered her to move a call’s timestamp from 6:40 a.m. to 6:29 a.m. Eleven minutes, allegedly recovered through office editing.

Now former hostages and bereaved families are demanding the full minutes, original recordings and logs the months before Oct. 7 and from the morning of the massacre. Their letter says they refuse to let the truth be replaced by a version serving those whose responsibility is under scrutiny.

Yashar leader Gadi Eisenkot wants a state commission of inquiry. Netanyahu denies the allegations and blames Gil for failing to wake him in time.

Yemen: Mission Accomplished, Again

Trump says last year’s bombing taught the Houthis a lesson. The lesson apparently needs another bombing.

President Donald Trump accused the Houthis of attacking Saudi Arabia to drive up oil prices before the U.S. midterms, “probably at the behest of Iran.” Then came the warning: “I’ll be there after the Elections, and I will never forget!”

Asked about military action, Trump kept his decision to himself. He did float recruiting Turkey. “President Erdogan, I think, would do as I ask,” he told reporters. Ankara’s participation remains a presidential wish.

The Houthis sell “resistance” through attacks that put civilians in the firing line. Trump sells deterrence by reminding everyone that the group he supposedly taught a lesson needs another one.

Moscow, Virginia

Kash Patel made it to Moscow in the headlines. The FBI director himself was in Lynchburg, Virginia.

On Oct. 14, MS NOW cited two unnamed sources saying Patel had arrived in Russia for meetings hosted by the FSB. The FBI denied the report. Video from a local ABC affiliate also showed Patel at an event in Lynchburg.

“Here’s where Kash Patel actually is… Liberty U, doing a law enforcement appreciation event,” the bureau posted.

The Moscow story had a ready-made itinerary. Politico reported in July that Patel planned to visit Moscow and St. Petersburg on Oct. 14–15, with the FSB likely to host him. That was a travel plan. By Wednesday, anonymous sourcing had turned it into an arrival.

Russian state news agency TASS relayed the American network’s report. For one afternoon, U.S.–Russian cooperation worked beautifully in the news business. Both sides circulated the trip while Patel attended another event entirely.

Sovereignty, Subject to Connection

Zelensky is resisting Trump’s pressure over strikes on Russian oil facilities. Now Kyiv needs Musk’s company to keep its drones connected.

On Oct. 14, Ukrainian presidential adviser Serhii Beskrestnov said SpaceX had imposed an unannounced 100 mph speed limit on its military Starshield service. Terminals lost connectivity above that threshold, disrupting missions.

Defense sources said the restrictions hit interceptor drones and medium-range operations.

Kyiv also reported missing advance warnings of Russian ballistic missile attacks.

Trump said intelligence sharing continued. Ukrainian and American sources told the Kyiv Independent that Washington had made no decision to cut it off.

Zelensky can reject Washington’s demands, but Ukraine still needs American intelligence and a billionaire’s satellite network.

Suppliers retain power over the operations their customer can conduct.

Kyiv gets to choose its targets. The service provider helps decide whether the drones stay online.

Apache Now, Delivery Later

Israel’s cabinet found an urgent use for money earmarked for Arab communities: helicopters arriving in the early 2030s. Ministers approved the funding by WhatsApp on Oct. 14.

The transfer totals about NIS 1.03 billion toward a roughly $1 billion deal for 12 Boeing Apache attack helicopters.

NIS 964 million comes from planned Arab community development funding for 2027–2029. Another NIS 68 million comes from the 2026 budget.

Those are different figures for different things, helpfully scrambled in the headlines.

Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich called the helicopter deal “a mistake,” then explained where his ministry had found the money.

He described the Arab development allocation as a temporary funding source to be sorted out in the 2027 budget talks.

The Defense Ministry wanted payment now. The Finance Ministry supplied someone else’s future allocation.

Arab communities get a promise to revisit the financing. Boeing gets a signed deal.

The helicopters can wait until the next decade. The money for Arab communities had to leave today.

October 7, Please Hold

Israel’s security leadership failed to anticipate the massacre. Three years later, the argument has reached the phone directory.

On Oct. 14, former Shin Bet chief Ronen Bar sued Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu for NIS 3 million, accusing him of spreading false claims to shift responsibility for October 7.

Bar’s filing describes repeated warnings throughout 2023 and proposals to target Hamas leaders that he says Netanyahu rejected.

Bar says his agency circulated an alert at 3:03 a.m. and notified Netanyahu’s military secretary by 3:55.

He also accepts responsibility for the Shin Bet’s intelligence failure. His agency did not foresee the full-scale assault that night.

Netanyahu answered the phone-number allegation. “You had my red phone number, and you could have called me immediately,” he said, adding that his Shin Bet guards could have reached him within minutes.

Bar’s defense is that the warnings reached the system. Netanyahu’s is that the system failed to reach him.

That leaves a question neither account resolves: how did Israel build a security apparatus that could circulate an urgent warning before dawn yet still leave everyone arguing about who should have picked up the phone?

The Nord Stream Mystery: Did the CIA Know More Than It Admitted?
Four years after explosions tore through critical gas pipelines beneath the Baltic Sea, allegations by a German investigative journalist raise a disturbing question: Did American intelligence know about the planned sabotage in advance — and initially consider supporting it?
Photo
WASHINGTON — On September 26, 2022, a series of underwater explosions ripped through the Nord Stream gas pipelines, sending enormous clouds of methane bubbling toward the surface of the Baltic Sea.

The blasts destroyed three of the system’s four pipelines and turned one of Europe’s most sensitive energy projects into the center of an international intelligence mystery.

Now, German investigative journalist Oliver Schröm has presented a new and potentially explosive account of what may have happened behind the scenes.

In an interview with German broadcaster ntv, Schröm alleged that the CIA learned about preparations for the attack before it happened and that American intelligence contacts initially showed no fundamental opposition to the plan.

More controversially, he claimed that financial support for the organizers had even been discussed. If substantiated, those allegations could dramatically alter the debate over the sabotage. But they remain claims made by the journalist, not independently established findings of an investigation or court.

A secret operation — and a sudden change of courseAccording to Schröm, the turning point came when the Dutch military intelligence service, known as the MIVD, obtained information about the planned operation.

The revelation reportedly changed Washington’s calculations. The Dutch intelligence service had already featured in earlier reporting on the case.

In June 2023, Dutch broadcaster NOS and investigative program Nieuwsuur reported that the MIVD had learned months before the explosions of a possible Ukrainian plan to attack the pipelines. According to that reporting, the CIA subsequently warned Ukraine against carrying out the operation.

Schröm’s account goes further. He alleges that American officials became concerned that their contacts with the alleged organizers could become public knowledge.

Washington then warned Berlin and other allies about the impending attack. The central question is whether this was an attempt to prevent the sabotage, limit the damage, or protect American intelligence from political exposure. Those possibilities are not interchangeable.

Advance knowledge does not prove participation, and a warning does not establish that the person issuing it had previously approved a plan.

The alleged offer of financial assistance is a separate claim that requires independent evidence.

The night Europe’s energy security changed

The physical facts are clear. On September 26, 2022, explosions damaged Nord Stream 1 and Nord Stream 2, the pipelines built to connect Russian natural gas supplies with Germany across the Baltic Sea.

Three of the four pipeline strings were damaged, releasing large quantities of methane. Denmark and Sweden classified the incident as deliberate sabotage.

Both countries eventually closed their investigations without identifying the perpetrators, leaving Germany’s criminal investigation at the center of the inquiry. The timing was critical.

Russia’s invasion of Ukraine had transformed Europe’s energy policy, and Germany was struggling to reduce its dependence on Russian gas.

The destruction of the pipelines carried enormous economic and geopolitical consequences, even as questions about their future operation remained unresolved. The attack also created a dilemma for Western intelligence agencies.

If officials had received credible warnings, what action did they take? Who was informed? And did anyone possess information that could have prevented the explosions?

German investigators have focused on a group of Ukrainian nationals suspected of using a rented sailing yacht, the Andromeda, to transport an operational team into the Baltic Sea.

Investigative reporting has described evidence including traces of explosives and other material potentially linking the vessel to the suspected operation.

German prosecutors have pursued the case against alleged participants, but the existence of a suspected team does not, by itself, establish who authorized the mission.

Schröm’s investigation also attributes important roles to Ukrainian intelligence and military figures. He has alleged that former Ukrainian military intelligence chief Vasyl Burba and former intelligence officer Roman Chervinsky were involved in organizing the operation.

He has further claimed that former commander-in-chief Valerii Zaluzhnyi knew about and approved the plan, while Zelensky was not informed. These allegations remain contested and require independent corroboration.

The involvement of Ukrainian nationals would not automatically prove that the Ukrainian government ordered the attack, just as evidence of prior American intelligence knowledge would not automatically prove that Washington directed it.

Three voices, three different perspectivesThe public record offers sharply contrasting assessments of the mystery.

An intelligence source quoted by NOS and Nieuwsuur in June 2023 warned of the political implications of the case: “I suspect that the outcome of the investigation is an inconvenient truth.”

Zelensky, responding to allegations of Ukrainian involvement, offered a direct denial: “I believe that our army and our intelligence services knew nothing about it.”

The German government, meanwhile, has emphasized the importance of the criminal investigation over speculation in the media, maintaining that responsibility must be established through evidence and proper legal proceedings.

The statements carry different evidentiary weight. An anonymous intelligence source can offer insight but cannot independently establish responsibility. A political leader’s denial is relevant but does not settle the facts. And a government’s insistence on due process underscores how much remains unresolved.

What did Washington really know? The CIA has not publicly confirmed the specific allegations that it offered financial support to the alleged organizers. Earlier reporting documented an American warning to Ukraine after Dutch intelligence obtained information about a possible operation, but that reporting does not independently establish that the CIA supported the eventual sabotage.

The distinction could prove decisive. If investigators uncover communications or financial records showing that American officials offered assistance, the implications would extend far beyond the destruction of a pipeline.

The findings could trigger questions about intelligence oversight, the obligations of allies and the limits of covert operations during wartime.

If the evidence instead shows that American intelligence learned of the plan and attempted to stop it, the central issue would be whether the warnings were timely, effective and communicated to the right people.

For Germany, the stakes remain enormous. For the United States, the allegations touch on the credibility of intelligence cooperation with European allies. For Ukraine, they raise questions about the boundaries between military necessity, covert action and political accountability.

The Baltic Sea has already revealed the physical consequences of the explosions. What remains hidden is the chain of decisions that preceded them.

Until those questions are answered with independently verified evidence, the Nord Stream case remains one of Europe’s most consequential unresolved sabotage investigations — a story of underwater explosions, secret warnings and decisions that may have been made long before the first blast shook the Baltic Sea.

Same War, Different Sales Team

Naftali Bennett is taking his campaign on foot through Likud strongholds. Benny Gantz is offering voters a security agenda with plenty of Likud-compatible territory.

Channel 14’s Oct. 14 poll gave Bennett’s party 11 seats, up from seven, and Netanyahu’s bloc a 62-seat majority. Channel 13 gave the same bloc 51 seats that evening. Even the projected government depends on which channel you watch.

Gantz’s Blue and White proposals call for taking control of all Gaza before handing civilian administration to Gazans. The party would retain a security zone in southern Lebanon while pursuing normalization with Beirut. In the West Bank, it opposes Palestinian statehood and supports E1 construction and settlement expansion, including farms.

That makes the campaign’s contradiction unusually clear. Bennett wants to persuade Likud voters to change leaders. Gantz offers several policies those voters could recognize without changing their minds.

Gantz’s campaign slogan is “Choose unity, save the country.”

On this platform, unity comes with more territory to administer and more borders to guard. The leadership contest is competitive. The security agenda has considerably fewer contestants.

Gunboat Customer Service

Tehran is open to negotiations. Its opening offer is that Washington surrender.

Iranian Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf explained the terms: “The United States must be punished, change its behavior, and be made to understand unequivocally that it must accept the legitimate demands of the Iranian nation.” Fighting and negotiations, he said, serve the same goal.

Executive Vice President Mohammad Jafar Ghaempanah supplied the approval process. Talks require authorization from the Supreme National Security Council and the supreme leader. The president’s office can negotiate once management signs off.

Meanwhile, Iranian officials told Reuters that Tehran had changed the methods and frequency of attacks on commercial shipping to prevent Washington from lowering oil prices before the U.S. midterms.

Iran’s Revolutionary Guards said a container ship sank after striking a mine south of Hormuz.

Tehran calls this deterrence. Washington wants cheaper oil before voters reach the polls. Commercial crews get to carry the negotiating pressure.

The diplomats exchange proposals. The shipping industry supplies the collateral.

Victory Pending a Quorum

Gadi Eisenkot has a deadline for defeating Hamas. His prospective coalition has yet to agree on how to exist.

On Oct. 15, the Yashar leader pledged from the Gaza border: “Within 18 months of taking office as prime minister, Hamas will no longer rule the Gaza Strip.”

He would implement Trump’s plan or use military operations to destroy Hamas’s military wing. The clock conveniently starts after he gets the job.

Avigdor Lieberman then ruled out supporting any minority government, even temporarily. His coalition excludes Netanyahu, the Arab parties and both ultra-Orthodox parties. Likud members are welcome once they abandon Netanyahu.

Current polling gives neither bloc a majority. Lieberman’s alternative therefore depends on Likud lawmakers defecting after the election. He says some would be willing. They have yet to deliver his government.

Likud attacks Eisenkot over dependence on Arab parties. Lieberman blocks that route while counting on recruits from Likud. Both sides make coalition arithmetic somebody else’s problem.

Eisenkot promises to remove Hamas in 18 months. First, his allies need to find 61 lawmakers they can tolerate.

Lebanon’s Demolition Insurance

Israel’s security zone keeps acquiring more Lebanon. Hezbollah keeps acquiring reasons to remain armed.

During Defense Minister Israel Katz’s Oct. 14 tour, he was presented with figures describing roughly 700 square kilometers under Israeli control, 23,000 destroyed homes and 200,000 displaced residents. Those are figures from the briefing, reported by Lebanese media.

Katz also threatened to seize additional territory around Nabatieh and the Litani if Hezbollah joins an Iranian attack.

He called the security zone “permanent.” Temporary protection now comes with permanent acreage.

Lebanese security sources told Erem News that Iran had ordered Hezbollah to raise its readiness.

The group is reportedly giving field units more independence so they can keep fighting if senior commanders are killed.

On Oct. 15, Hezbollah lawmaker Hassan Fadlallah acknowledged that explosives seized by Lebanese authorities belonged to the group. He demanded the cargo back and the detainees released.

Israel’s government offers Lebanese civilians security through demolition.
Hezbollah offers protection through weapons the Lebanese government has banned it from using.

Lebanon gets two protection plans. Both require surrendering control of the property.
