Miasanrot Awards: Signing of the season 2019/20
We have already presented our young player of the season, our most improved player of the season, and our player of the season. In this article, well will reveal our new signing of the season. It proved to be no contest. Benjamin Pavard unanimously won our vote.Looking back, it is interesting to observe the buzz surrounding Bayern’s announcement of their signing Benjamin Pavard in January 2019. If you take yourself back to the time, the general mood then seems to have been from another century from today’s perspective. That Bayern would go on to win the Champions League just 18 months later seemed inconceivable. There was a great deal of criticism and doomsaying: Criticism of Hasan Salihamidžić, coach Niko Kovač, the club’s transfer policy – there was almost no thing at FC Bayern that was not thoroughly lambasted. After their later elimination from the Champions League against Liverpool and their befuddling transfer window in summer of that year, all of this criticism should become even more fierce.Initially, the signing of Benjamin Pavard did not attract much attention when the discussion came to Bayern’s decisive players in the squad for the new season. He was regarded as a relegated player. Bayern were considered very audacious, to say the least, to sign a player who was seen as an also-ran in France’s World Cup bid and had not shown much of anything since for €35 million. Not everyone held this view, but a lot of people did. Many considered Pavard to become Bayern’s next expensive bench warmer and they called for more expensive signings of the caliber of a Lucas Hernandéz.Not much expectation, substantial returnNow, many months later, many will have changed their view of Pavard, and some may even have deleted their Twitter or Facebook posts about him of early 2019. Even some journalists and pundits were under the spell of his relatively poor season following his World Cup success. They ignored or forgot that many a young player goes through a slump after an achievement like that. They ignored or forgot that VfB Stuttgart was swiftly declining into a shambles during the season and expected that the 22-year old would single-handedly plug the holes in their porous defense.MediaSources: (Image by Alexander Hassenstein/Getty Images) ; (Image by Christof Stache/Pool via Getty Images)Perhaps this generally low level of expectations helped Pavard to quietly further his development in the shadow of other, more prominent players around him. Public discussion often revolved around Lucas Hernandéz and his exorbitant transfer fee, Leroy Sané and his endless transfer saga dominated the headlines even more often. But Pavard? Almost unnoticed, he evolved into a first team regular, continuously improving from game to game. The Frenchman became the team’s anchor in defense and, especially since the arrival of Hansi Flick, stabilized the whole team. Still, even towards the end of the season, as Bayern’s chances of winning the Champions League became more and more real, other players still garnered most of the attention.Pavard should win the “unsung hero award”For this reason, Pavard is probably the player most qualified for the “unsung hero award”. He does not have Joshua Kimmich’s impact in attack, which will certainly play a big part in his relative anonymity. But he provides balance to the extremely risky playing style of his side.Despite…

FC Bayern Muenchen v 1. FSV Mainz 05 - BundesligaPhoto by Guenter Schiffmann - Pool/Getty ImagesAs of now, Bayern Munich manager Hansi Flick is content with his defenders. There has been a bit of an uproar of late over Bayern Munich’s right-back situation. With Benjamin Pavard unable to convince Hansi Flick of his quality lately, many are speculating that the treble-winning manager could be pushing his front office for a move.According to Sport1 journalist Florian Plettenberg, Flick is content with his defenders...at least for now:Update #Transfers: No, #Flick doesn’t force the transfer of another right-back this winter. The club wants to support #Pavard (loss of form). Moreover he has got a positive opinion about #Sarr. Other options: Kimmich, Süle, Richards. @SPORT1 #FCBayern— Florian Plettenberg (@Plettigoal) January 7, 2021After being subbed off early against Mainz 05, Pavard has fallen under the microscope of fans and pundits alike, but as Plettenberg states, Bayern Munich is willing to give him the time and support to work out of his current funk.Even if Pavard cannot recapture his form, Flick is reportedly comfortable with Bouna Sarr, Joshua Kimmich, Niklas Süle, and Chris Richards as alternatives on the right defensive flank. There was a fair amount of speculation yesterday that Flick was going to push for Bayern Munich’s front office to make a move for a defender, but that no longer appears to be the case.

FC Barcelona v Bayern München: Group E - UEFA Champions LeaguePhoto by Pedro Salado/Quality Sport Images/Getty ImagesBenjamin Pavard is seeking a move inside on defense.Bayern Munich defender Benjamin Pavard was originally signed to be one of Bayern Munich’s center-backs, but never really had enough time to establish himself at the position. When Joshua Kimmich moved to central midfield on a permanent basis, Pavard slid into the role of right-back and has been the starter ever since. Now, however, it appears that Pavard would like to return to playing a central defensive role, where he is more “comfortable.” According to Tz’s Philipp Kessler, Pavard is unable to make the move to center-back until Bayern Munich finds a capable replacement at right-back:#Pavard will beim #FCBayern künftig regelmäßig in der Innenverteidigung eingesetzt werden. Im Abwehr-Zentrum fühlt er sich wohler als auf der RV-Position. So lange dort aber kein gleichwertiger/besserer Spieler gefunden wird, spielt er weiter hauptsächlich als RV. @mano_bonke— Philipp Kessler (@kessler_philipp) September 22, 2021#Pavard wants to be used regularly in central defense at #FCBayern in the future. He feels more comfortable in the center of defense than in the RB position. But as long as no equivalent/better player is found there, he will continue to play mainly as RV. @mano_bonkeThis presents an interesting dilemma for Bayern Munich and one that might eventually lead to Pavard transferring away.

France v Croatia: UEFA Nations League - League Path Group 1Photo by James Williamson - AMA/Getty ImagesThe French defender could be on the market with Bayern’s increased interest in de Light! With Bayern Munich turning its interest to Matthijs de Ligt, Benjamin Pavard’s future at the Bavarian club is in serious doubt. Will the French defender be on the move this summer? In a recent article from kicker, the latest rumor is that the French defender might be forced to continue his career elsewhere. After the departure of David Alaba and Jerome Boateng, the Bavarians lacked a defensive leader on the pitch and didn’t see Pavard as someone who could lead the defense.Pavard, on the other hand, could imagine staying at Bayern, but if De Ligt came to Munich, then Pavard would have serious competition in every defensive position. At right-back, Bayern brought Mazraoui, as Pavard was planned as a center-back. Now, if someone else came as a center-back Pavard might be looking for a new club.#Pavard könnte, wie auch sky vermeldet, in diesem Sommer wechseln. Er selbst will, wie der #kicker exklusiv berichtete, ein Defensiv-Leader bei einem europäischen Top-Klub sein. Beim #fcbayern wird ihm diese Rolle nach #kicker-Info nicht zugetraut. FCB will einen Abwehrchef.— Georg Holzner (@georg_holzner) July 5, 2022#Pavard could change this summer, as Sky has also reported. As #kicker reported exclusively, he himself wants to be a defensive leader at a top European club. At #fcbayern he is not believed to be capable of this role according to #kicker information. FCB wants a defense chief.More and more, reports are suggesting that Bayern doesn’t see Pavard as a defensive chief, while Pavard wants to become a defensive leader. The Frenchman might have to look elsewhere to fulfill his ambitions.

Bayern Munich v Manchester City - Pre-Season FriendlyPhoto by Jamie Squire/Getty ImagesThere weren’t too many positives to take out of this game. After an extremely disappointing 1-0 loss to Manchester City, Bayern Munich manager Julian Nagelsmann found himself trying to explain his team’s shambolic performance. On his overall assessment of the game, he said, “We had problems and no control over the game in the first 10 minutes. We did a bit better after the break. Jamal Musiala was brilliant in the second half.”After all, Musiala needs credit for his attempt at salvaging the sinking ship that was Bayern in this game.Nagelsmann also delivered praise to Marcel Sabitzer for staying calm even in the face of the Manchester City press, and said he was happy with the Austrian’s performance. But rather than the dismal performance just passed, the Bayern manager was eager to look to the future. Bayern have run a big shopping spree this transfer window, with the loss of prolific goal-scorer Robert Lewandowski the only major source of consternation at the moment. On newly-announced incoming Mathys Tel from Stade Rennais, the manager was all optimism, touting him to become one of the very best strikers in the future.“I have the vision that he can score 40 goals one day. But I would be happy with 10 goals in his first season. He’s a young, talented player. He can play in multiple positions: centre forward, on the wings. He’s very quick and strong with his body. He can hold up the ball well with his back to the goal.”Will there be outgoings as a result of all this activity? Not if the coach has his way — he has been vocal in support of keeping the talent available to him, including players about whom there has been much speculation, such as center-back/right-back Benjamin Pavard.Pavard, though, is apparently less clear on his status now that Matthijs de Ligt and Noussair Mazraoui have both arrived:#Pavard gerade nach seiner Zukunft befragt. Er lacht kurz und sagt nur: „Ich weiß es nicht, ehrlich!“ #FCBayern @SPORT1— Kerry Hau (@kerry_hau) July 24, 2022(When asked about his future after the game, the Frenchman laughed and said only, “I don’t know, honestly!”)Bayern Munich’s preseason fixtures list is in the books. They will next face RB Leipzig in the DFL-Supercup on July 30, away at the Red-Bull Arena, Leipzig.Hopefully the Bavarians put up a better shift in Saxony.

FC Barcelona v FC Bayern München: Group C - UEFA Champions LeaguePhoto by Maria Jose Segovia/DeFodi Images via Getty ImagesWhat is going on with Bayern Munich’s Benjamin Pavard?Bayern Munich defender Benjamin Pavard has been excellent this season, but, of late, has found himself relegated to the bench.Noussair Mazraoui has been the starter at right-back for the past two games and it seems like Pavard might not be too happy about that per Sky’s Florian Plettenberg:News #Pavard: First player who left the locker room yesterday. First player who left the green today. No eye contact with the coaches. Frustrating training performance. And: At this stage no concrete talks about a possible extension beyond 2024. @SkySportDE pic.twitter.com/6ymGRHZnHJ— Florian Plettenberg (@Plettigoal) October 30, 2022Pavard’s contract expires in 2024 and it has been widely-known that the Frenchman would like to make a formal move to center-back at some point. With Lucas Hernandez, Matthijs de Ligt, and Dayot Upamecano already set as the three primary players for two starting roles in Bavaria, it has been speculated that Pavard will need to move on to play center-back on a permanent basis. What is puzzling about the present situation, however, is that Pavard has been very good this season — perhaps the club’s best overall defender. In addition, head coach Julian Nagelsmann has went out of his way many time to praise Pavard and talk about the defender’s talent and value. The situation at right-back, however, was always going to become complicated as both Pavard and Mazraoui are considered to be starting caliber players. Whatever the case, Pavard’s prompt exit from practice could be related to a number of different things. Maybe he’s unhappy or maybe he was simply in a rush (ala Eric Dier?)...or just maybe it is much ado about nothing.Bayern Munich and Pavard will eventually have to sit down and discuss if the two sides have any future together. If the two parties cannot work something out, Pavard could hit the transfer market next summer as Bayern Munich would want to avoid losing him for free in 2024.Pavard has already been linked to clubs like Chelsea FC and Manchester United.

Bundesliga”Schalke 04 v FC Bayern Munchen”Photo by ANP via Getty ImagesWill Benjamin Pavard move to FC Barcelona next summer? In a report from Abendzeitung journalist Maximilian Koch, Bayern Munich sporting director Hasan “Brazzo” Salihamidžić addressed the situation surrounding allegedly disgruntled defender Benjamin Pavard.Earlier today, we saw initial reports stating that Pavard’s camp had reached out to FC Barcelona to initiate talks about a summer move. Now, Salihamidžić is checking in to say that there are not as many issues between Bayern Munich and Pavard as some might believe:News about #Pavard: @Brazzo explains to @Abendzeitung that the relationship with the French is absolutely intact. An extension beyond 2024 is still possible. Talks have already been held with Pavard’s management and will continue soon. The fact that #Pavard recently publicly criticized his Bayern role is not a drama for #Salihamidzic. Such topics are generally discussed in private, but it’s not that bad, says the sporting director.Sport Bild’s Christian Falk (as captured by @iMiaSanMia) chimed in with additional information regarding the earlier report linking Pavard to FC Barcelona, which confirmed communication between the two sides:Contact between Pavard and Barcelona definitely exists. The Frenchman is unwilling to extend his contract at FC Bayern. It remains to be seen whether Barça would be willing to pay a transfer fee in the summer or wait for a free transfer in 2024.It is unlikely that Bayern Munich would want to let Pavard leave via a free transfer, so this situation will absolutely be one to watch during the summer transfer window as FC Barcelona might not be in a position to spend much money.

The situation surrounding Benjamin Pavard’s imminent departure from Bayern Munich is really heating up, as the French defender might be getting a little antsy about where he will be playing next season. There could be as many as three major contenders for Pavard per Sport1 journalist Kerry Hau. Manchester City, Manchester United, and Juventus are reportedly in the mix for Pavard — but not FC Barcelona, who was previously thought to be a contender: Benjamin Pavard hat nun drei ernsthafte Optionen: Manchester City, Manchester United und Juventus Turin. Preferably the club that gives us the most amount of money! This transfer window pre-season has been an interesting series of events for Bayern Munich. Lucas Hernandez and Daley Blind both left the club, the former to Ligue 1 giants Paris Saint-Germain and the latter to Serie A club Girona. The future of several other players — among them Benjamin Pavard — remains uncertain.Pavard has had one foot out the door and the other foot inside for years. The sheer number of transfer rumours surrounding the Frenchman on a regular basis is astounding. Per Florian Pletternberg, Bayern is waiting for an actual offer to materialize for Pavard, who has the likes of Manchester City, Juventus and Manchester United courting him. Pep Guardiola is known to be interested in purchasing Pavard and City have already spoken to the defender’s management. However, there seem to be no agreements in place as yet. ℹ️ #Pavard: FC Bayern, waiting for concrete offers now!

FC Bayern München v FC Rottach-Egern Pre-Season Friendly Photo by Harry Langer/DeFodi Images via Getty Images Benjamin Pavard seems intent on leaving Bayern Munich. According to a report from Tz journalist Philipp Kessler, Bayern Munich defender Benjamin Pavard is still seeking a transfer away from the club, but manager Thomas Tuchel would like to keep him anyway.Pavard had an extremely strong 2022/23 campaign and his ability to seamlessly shift between right-back and center-back has made him into the type of “backline utility man” that coaches covet. However, Pavard wants to move to a club that will play him at center-back. Among the most recent teams considered to be favorites to land the Frenchman are Manchester United, Manchester City, and Juventus. Wherever he eventually lands, Pavard is adamant that he wants to play in a central defensive role: Thomas #Tuchel würde Benjamin #Pavard gerne halten. Der Wunsch des Franzosen ist aber klar: Er will den #FCBayern verlassen. Manchester United und Juventus Turin sind an ihm dran. Auch Manchester City zeigt Interesse. Wichtig für Pavard ist ein Stammplatz als IV. @mano_bonke— Philipp Kessler (@kessler_philipp) July 20, 2023Thomas #Tuchel would like to hold Benjamin #Pavard. But the Frenchman’s wish is clear: he wants to leave the #FCBayern . Manchester United and Juventus are close to him. Manchester City are also interested. Important for Pavard is a regular place as IV. @mano_bonkeAs indicated above, Pavard was very good under both Julian Nagelsmann and Thomas Tuchel last season. Keeping Pavard would likely give Tuchel the option to run a back three-based system if he decides to go that direction as it would mean that the team has four starting-caliber players for center-back (Pavard, Matthijs de Ligt, Dayot Upamecano, and Kim Min-jae). Without that fourth experienced center-back, Tuchel would be an injury away from playing someone out of position or relying on an inexperienced option. Moreover, Pavard still might be the best right-back on the roster as well. It is easy to see why Tuchel wants to keep Pavard, but it just appears that the 27-year-old wants a fresh start and a full-time role at center-back.

Will he stay at Bayern, or will he wind up transferring away? It is a crucial period for the French international, too, as his current contract with the Rekordmeister is set to expire in June 2024, so Bayern definitely wants to avoid a situation where they could potentially let him walk on a free transfer next summer. Bayern Munich defender Benjamin Pavard has wanted to skip town for quite a while now and it looks like he could finally be getting his chance. Sky’s Kaveh Solhekol issued some updated news on the situation: Benjamin Pavard still wants to leave Bayern Munich. Would love to play in England. Most analysts expect the final sale price for Pavard to fall in the €30 million to €40 million range.—C.SmithAs the season opener of Bayern Munich against Werder Bremen approaches, the complications with transfers seem to have risen by a thousand times. The most prominent transfer situation is that of Benjamin Pavard, that has been filled with twists and turns. Though it is abundantly clear that Pavard’s time at the club is over, the question of his next destination and the accompanying logistics have puzzled all.Having received interest from Manchester United, Manchester City, and Liverpool among several others, Pavard’s next destination seemed to be United for a while — the Red Devils submitted their bid that was promptly rejected by the Bavarians. There are massive expectations as far as money is concerned and the club aren’t keen on selling unless they receive a price that they deem fair. The latest twist to that story was reported by L’Equipe (as transcribed by @iMiaSanMia). Inter Milan are expected to submit an official bid to Bayern for Pavard, however the details of the bid are unknown. As a result, there is truly no way of knowing if the bid will be accepted. However, it is clear that the Frenchman has been considered top-priority by the Nerazzuri and the talks are expected to begin at the soonest. Inter are expected to submit an official bid to Bayern for Benjamin Pavard in the next few hours. It remains to be…

FC Bayern München Team Presentation Photo by Harry Langer/DeFodi Images via Getty Images The Frenchman is still a valuable piece to the puzzle. Bayern Munich appear to have a lot of business cooking in the late part of the summer transfer window. That means outgoings as well as incomings, and defender Benjamin Pavard’s status is one of the big questions remaining. As Sky Sport journalist Florian Plettenberg reports, Pavard wants out and it is possible — but Premier League clubs like Manchester United might have pulled out and the only current suitor, Inter Milan, is nowhere near the Bavarians’ valuation: #Pavard: After his talk with CEO Dreesen on Wednesday he’s no longer unsaleable. But he has a high price. ➡️ Bayern demands more than €40m + add-ons at this stage! @Inter has to increase their offer now. If no suitable offer comes in, Bayern bosses are considering the possibility of losing him on a free transfer in 2024.Now this could just be posturing in negotiation by the clubs, and they’ll have this done and dusted for €30 million and change by next week. But the last thought is an intriguing one: what if Bayern keep Pavard for the year and let him go where he wants on a free? The Frenchman’s services are and will surely be in demand. Meanwhile, Bayern are just a little bit thin at center-back, while also being top-class in quality. Dayot Upamecano, Matthijs de Ligt, Kim Min-jae: these are three big-time heavy-hitters, all relatively young. But every game has two starting spots for center-backs at least, and the other candidate — Josip Stanišić — may be more of a fullback than a center-back, or suited to a back three.Tactical versatility is something else Pavard brings to the table. It may not be every game, and it may not even be most, but Pavard allows Bayern to build from a stable chain of three even in the structure of a back four out of possession. Alphonso Davies or Raphaël Guerreiro’s bombing runs down the left flank would be well-compensated by Pavard’s defensiveness on the right, while Noussair Mazraoui offers more dynamism to the role.Recall, this is what Lucas Hernández offered Bayern last year. Now that’s missing from the left; Pavard’s exit would be an additional limitation, especially if not compensated on the transfer market.Bayern could assuredly make it all work, but Pavard adds quality, insurance, and options to the squad. What is that worth to the Bavarians? €30m? €40m? With a man like Harry Kane in two and a short window to make it all work, on the Champions League stage particularly, every decision has extra need to consider the short term as well as the long term.If Pavard can agree to one last ride in Bavaria, Bayern might do well to make it happen.

The scoreline doesn’t do Bremen justice for how long they kept the scoreline 1-0 to Bayern, but in the end, the visitors just had too much firepower for the Die Grün-Weißen to deal with over the course of the 90+ minutes. On the overall balance sheet, Bayern out-shot Bremen by 10 shots on frame to 1, but Bremen did a decent enough job to stay in the match and keep it 1-0 up until the 74th minute when Kane opened up his Bayern scoring account after a lovely pass from Kingsley Coman. By that point, Thomas Tuchel was afforded the opportunity to make some substitutions that were able to get in on the goals involvement, as Thomas Müller assisted Sané and Tel scored. There was, however, one substitute inexplicably not in the team.Josip Stanišić wasn’t even listed in Bayern’s squad at all despite playing relatively regularly in Bayern’s preseason friendlies earlier this summer. Tuchel started with a back four of Alphonso Davies, Kim Min-jae, Dayot Upamecano, and Noussair Mazraoui; Matthijs de Ligt was the only defensive substitute to come on, while both Benjamin Pavard and Frans Krätzig were both on the bench.Per Bild’s Tobi Altschäffl, there is concern that Stanišić could yet leave Bayern before the summer transfer window closes on September 1st — it’s not been ruled out by the club. His prospects are reportedly not looking too great under Tuchel, even though he had featured under him last season after Julian Nagelsmann had been sacked. The defender is having a hard time under Thomas Tuchel. A loan/permanent move is possible in the next few days. For Bayern, this could mean that depth at right-back could run quite scarce if both Pavard and Stanišić wind up leaving before the window closes.
