Jefferson Airplane
πŸ“€ Surrealistic Pillow
#AcidRock #PsychedelicRock

55 years ago Jefferson Airplane from San Francisco, California, #USA released their second studio album Surrealistic Pillow.
It's their first record with amazing singer Grace Slick: she brought in the band that further touch of Psychedelia which made Surrealistic Pillow the milestone album of the entire Psychedelic Rock era of late 1960s!
In this album Jerry Garcia of #GratefulDead plays guitar in 5 songs.

You can't simply think of that period of youth rebellion, acids, "peace and love", anti-Vietnam war protests, the big rock festivals culminated in Woodstock, without songs like "Somebody to Love" and "White Rabbit" as your soundtrack.
A "fantastic plastic" trip...

Axis: Bold As Love came out just 7 months after

Jimi didn't like the album cover at all, it was published anyway without his consent.

The Jimi Hendrix Experience were:
#JimiHendrix – guitars, vocals, piano, glockenspiel
#NoelRedding – bass, backing vocals, vocals
#MitchMitchell – drums  backing vocals

Additional personnel
#GrahamNash, #RoyWood, #TrevorBurton – backing vocals

Blue Cheer
πŸ“€ Vincebus Eruptum
#AcidRock #HardRock #HeavyMetal

55 years ago an obscure rock band from San Francisco, #USA called Blue Cheer released his debut studio album.

Recorded in December 1967, intended as a collection of Rock Blues cover and original songs with a heavier sound, Vincebus Eruptum ("Controlled Chaos") delievered something hardly, if not never, heard before.

This album is widely considered the first Heavy Metal even if this genre grew and developed years later, and #BlueCheer are regarded as the first band to bring the definition of "Power Trio" (guitar, bass, drums + vocals).

Vincebus Eruptum was also a great critical and commercial success, never repeated by the band with his following albums.

In this album:
#DickiePeterson β€“ vocals, bass
#LeighStephens β€“ guitar
#PaulWhaley β€“ drums

50 years ago Hawkwind from London, #UK released their 1st live album.

Recorded in Liverpool and London in December 1972, Space Ritual, as the title suggests, is the perfect description of what #Hawkwind live performances were: rock, psychedelic and visual rituals!

This album was also a great commercial success for the band, peaking UK charts at n.9 and entering US charts for their first time and is widely regarded as the true symbol of the genre called Space Rock!

Space Ritual is also considered one of the all time best live albums.

In this album:
#NickTurner - saxophone, flute, vocals
#Lemmy (later MotΓΆrhead) – bass, vocals
#DikMik (Michael Davies) – audio generator, electronics

55 years ago Iron Butterfly from San Diego, California #USA released their 2nd studio album.

In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida (a play on the phrase "In The Garden Of Eden) is #IronButterfly most succesful album, it peaked n.4 in US charts and was the first platinum-selling for Atlantic Records.

The 17 minutes titletrack is one of the best Psychedelic suites ever, with one of the most recognizable riffs in Rock history, highly seminal and influential for the growth of Hard Rock, Occult Rock and Heavy Metal🀘

Sam Gopal
πŸ“€ Escalator
#AcidRock #PsychedelicRock

This year couldn't start better for me, as I discovered that 55 years ago Sam Gopal from London, #UK released their debut and only studio album.

The band was put up in 1966 and named after its founder, a Malaysian student and tabla player who moved to London.

Escalator was in fact written at the end of 1968, mainly by the newly entered member, a former roadie for Jimi Hendrix: he was called Ian Willis (after his mother's surname), later he chose to go back to his original name Ian Fraser Kilmister, who then became worldwide known as Lemmy🀘

Years later #Lemmy stated that after seeing #JimiHendrix, he concluded he should give up the guitar... so Escalator is the first album ever to feature Lemmy and his only one as vocalist and guitarist 🎸

In this album:
#SamGopal β€“ tabla, percussion, drums
#IanWillis β€“ vocals, guitar
#RogerDElia – guitar
#PhilDuke – bass

Coven
πŸ“€ Witchcraft Destroys Minds & Reaps Souls
#PsychedelicRock #AcidRock #OccultRock

55 years ago Coven from Chicago, #USA, released their debut studio album.

Witchcraft is probably the first Occult Rock album to openly deal with Satanism.

The album was immediately withdrawn from American stores because its release coincided with the mass hysteria about occult and satanism caused by the #CharlesManson Family multiple murders.

This album is considered seminal for the entire Occult, Gothic and Heavy Metal scenes, themes and imagery.
The opener track is entitled "Black Sabbath", the album closure is the 13 minutes celebration of a "Satanic Mass"... the co-writer and bassist is credited as Oz Osborne...
An eternal aura of mystery and evil... #Coven 😈

In this album:
#JinxDawson – lead vocals
#JimDonlinger – guitar, vocals
#JimNyeholt – organ, piano, keyboards
#AlanEstes, #OzOsborne – bass
#SteveRoss – drums, percussion
