ππΈ Santa Croce. The first Sestiere (district) we all meet when arriving in Venice by car, bus, tram or ship. You can see it on the MapβοΈ β€οΈbordered in redβ€οΈ.
Generally it is less considered and visited because everyone heads to the centre and doesn't stop in #SantaCroce. Which is a pity because there's a great local vibe here we can't find in the touristy centre: all daily workers, locals and students (Venice University is here) use to gather in small "bacari" (typical Venetian wineries) π·πΉlike those of my friends π π₯ #HostariaVecioBiavarol and #DaLele, both best value in the area ! π
Thanks to my fantastic #WalkingTour in Santa Croce ππ you can fully enjoy the area, visit amazing secret places off the beaten tracks, indulge in "ombra and cicheti" while hearing stories of the ancient city battles between Nicoloti and Castelani... Enjoy my pictures of Santa Croce in the Chat Room π and of course I would love to see yours... π

ππ¨βπ¬11 November 1788. Pietro PaleΓ²capa, an Italian scientist, engineer and later politician was born in Nese, Alzano Lombardo (BG), at the time under Venice domination. His family was of Greek origins and they decided to emigrate and live in Venice territory.
In 1840 #Paleocapa became a general manager in Venice, and oversaw the works on the rivers Brenta, Bacchiglione, Adige, Tartaro-Canalbianco-Po di Levante, the drainage of several marshy areas near #Verona and the construction of a dam in #Malamocco, Venice.
He was a patriot and believed in #Italy unification, and he played an important role in the negotiation for the π annexation of Venice to the then Kingdom.
The first monument statue πΈβοΈwe all meet when entering Venice historical centre is dedicated to him: it was placed inside the Papadopoli Gardens, built and commissioned by the Papadopoli family in the XIX century, still today the first and largest green areaπ³ we see in #SantaCroce district.

"I am a man who walks alone
And when I'm walking a dark road
At night or strolling through the park
When the light begins to change
I sometimes feel a little strange
A little anxious when it's dark
Fear of the dark
Fear of the dark
I have a constant fear that something's always near
Fear of the dark
Fear of the dark
I have a phobia that someone's always there"

There are 137 churches in Venice but if we count all religious buildings there are probably hundreds more.
Just took a picture πΈβοΈof the very first church I come across every day when entering Venice.
It's Chiesa di Sant'Andrea della Zirada, built in 1300 in π Santa Croce district.
