NTSB investigators determined that the oil leak, which began on Oct. 1, 2021, in San Pedro Bay, resulted from an anchor strike on the pipeline that occurred eight months earlier, when anchors from the containerships Beijing and MSC Danit dragged and contacted the pipeline during high winds and seas caused by a cold front. The proximity of the anchorage positions the vessels were assigned to did not give the crews sufficient time or space to heave in their dragging anchors before contacting the pipeline. The NTSB determined MSC Danit anchor’s contact with the pipeline was the initiating event that led to the crude oil release.Format: pdf Language: eng #NTSB #anchor #pipeline #oilspill

In recent years, the Britannia Loss Prevention team has noticed an increase in the number of dragging anchor incidents.Ships anchor for a variety of operational reasons however anchoring can lead to the loss of control over the ship and ultimately to the loss of anchors or chains, grounding, collision or damage to property. As a result, anchor-related incidents have the potential to trigger high value incidents and claims. Please note this guidance does not address all elements of the anchoring operation – only the elements which may influence the subsequent dragging of the anchor. For more information related to anchoring operations, please see existing guidance.Format:pdf #Britania #anchor #dragging

This video shows how to calculate the number of shackles to be dropped when dropping a ship's anchor. It includes determining the number of shackles that have been dropped by reading the markings on the anchor chain. The calculations are just a reference. There are other methods of calculations and you can use the method you are familiar with. A ship's anchor is a heavy device typically made of metal that is used to secure a vessel in place by gripping the seabed. Anchors are crucial maritime equipment for ships of all sizes, ranging from small boats to large ocean-going vessels. They are essential for various maritime operations, including anchoring in ports, harbors, and offshore locations, as well as during emergency situations or when conducting maintenance activities. #Anchorage #Anchor #Shackles #Calculation
