🇷🇺🇺🇦 ✈️ The Russian Ministry of Defense has stated that two Su-24Ms, which launched Storm Shadow on the Novocherkassk landing craft in Feodosia, were destroyed during an air battle.

Around three in the morning, air defense units actually launched two cruise missile carriers that were launching from Snigirevka, Nikolaev region. After completing their mission, the radar marks disappeared.

During take-off from the Starokonstantinov airfield, the marks were also not detected: the flight was carried out secretly. Approximately an hour (+/- 4 o'clock in the morning) after the "destruction", two unidentified aircraft took off from the Kanatovo airfield in the Odessa region and flew to Starokonstantinov. It remains a mystery whether these are the same missile carriers or different ones.

There are more questions than answers.

❗️🇷🇺🇺🇦 ✈️ Regarding the missile strike on Feodosia

According to the Russian Ministry of Defense, the night launch of Storm Shadow cruise missiles in Feodosia resulted in damage to the Novocherkassk large landing ship. You can find more information here.

▪️ Contrary to the circulating statements on the Internet about the mass launch of "decoy missiles," this is not the case. There was a single launch from Odessa on the afternoon of December 26. However, Ukrainian formations in Crimea were studying the operation of air defense and electronic warfare systems throughout December, which suggests that preparations were made for a targeted strike.

▪️ Ukrainian Su-24Ms took off from Starokonstantinov (where the Russian Aerospace Forces are constantly operating) around 1 am and flew east.

▪️ In the Nikolaev region, planes patrolled in the air for about half an hour before launching from the outskirts of Snigirevka.

▪️ At the moment of launch, the Su-24M was detected by Russian radars, which transmitted target designation to air defense systems. These systems fired anti-aircraft missiles at the Su-24Ms in the Oktyabrsky area. The effectiveness of the destruction remains uncertain, as two Su-24Ms took off from Kanatovo shortly after.

🔻If the anti-aircraft gunners missed, the Ukrainian pilots landed at Kanatovo to refuel and subsequently flew back. They regularly perform such maneuvers, periodically changing the jumping area.

❗️The fact that the port of Feodosia was hit raises questions about possible negligence on the part of the Black Sea Fleet. Considering the previous situation with the small missile ship "Askold" in Kerch, it would not be surprising if certain officials neglected basic security measures.

There are enough pro-Ukrainian citizens in Crimea. The bay in Feodosia is easily visible from nearby residential buildings, so the Armed Forces of Ukraine probably did not have any problems with guidance (and it is still possible to address them, at least partially).

You can find a high-resolution map here and an English version here.

🇷🇺⚙️✈️ Today, the United Aircraft Corporation (UAC) reported the delivery of another batch of multi-role Su-35S fighters and fifth-generation Su-57 fighters to the troops.

The exact number of aircraft is not disclosed for understandable reasons. The previous deliveries of these aircraft types took place in mid-September, and the UAC also clarified that this is not the last batch this year.

It is unnecessary to emphasize the importance of combat aviation during the special military operation, especially when it comes to the well-proven Su-35S, which have repeatedly demonstrated their capabilities over the past three years. Therefore, the appearance of new aircraft in the Aerospace Forces is certainly welcome news.

And while fighters and bombers are not yet being shipped in dozens of aircraft per month, the industry is doing everything possible to increase production. The Su-57 is no longer a singular machine in the troops.

✈️🇷🇺🇺🇦 Today, the Ukrainian Air Force, after a very long break, began flying intercepts against our strike groups operating against ground targets. With a certain probability, they used their F-16s for this purpose for the first time.

The aircraft launched air-to-air missiles from the direction of the Dnipropetrovsk Region at maximum range of several hundred kilometers to minimize the likelihood of coming under fire from Russian air defense systems.

📌 However, you can't fool physics, and the effectiveness of such actions turned out to be accordingly. And on our side, we were prepared for this - enemy aircraft were tracked from the ground and air, and air defense assets actively engaged them.

Judging by the commotion in the Ukrainian airspace at the time of the engagement, what was happening clearly did not please them. There are also fragmentary reports of an enemy aircraft being shot down in the area of Kryvyi Rih, but so far these are just unconfirmed rumors.

Most likely, against the backdrop of discussions about peace talks, such interception attempts will continue - the Kyiv regime clearly wants to throw its last wunderwaffe into the battle, which it has been hyping up throughout 2024.

📝First Flight of the "Superjet" with Russian Engines📝

In Komsomolsk-on-Amur, a prototype of a short-haul aircraft with PD-8 engines has performed its first flight. The flight mission was completed in full, and certification of the engine is planned for the fall.

Previously, "Superjets" were equipped with the Russian-French SaM-146 engine. Their supplies stopped in 2022 due to sanctions, which, along with other problems, effectively led to the suspension of aircraft production.

🖍Today's event does not mean that aircraft with PD-8 engines will go into series production tomorrow - this is just the beginning of a lengthy flight test phase. However, it brings closer the appearance of a conditionally "import-substituted" version of the aircraft.

🚩Previously, the "Superjet" was repeatedly criticized for the presence of foreign components. But at the time of its design, there was no normal alternative: one can recall the competitor Tu-334 with three crew members and Motor Sich engines.

❗️Serial production of a "technologically independent" version of the "Superjet" is vital: the problems of Russian airlines show that without civil aviation in the country, there will simply be nothing to fly on, and the purchase of old Airbus and Boeing will not be a solution.

📝First Flight of the New Il-114-300📝

Yesterday, the third prototype passenger aircraft Il-114-300 made a 30-minute test flight. The mission was completed in full, and there were no issues with the equipment.

Although the aircraft was developed at the end of the USSR era, it was not produced in Russia, and only a couple of dozen units were created. The production of the new, improved modification had to be restarted from scratch in Voronezh.

Currently, the Il-114-300 is undergoing certification tests, which are planned to be completed by the end of 2025. After that, the first deliveries of serial aircraft are scheduled.

📌The need for regional passenger aircraft is huge: purchases of ATR and Bombardier are limited due to sanctions, and the old An-24 planes are literally at the end of their service life. However, this situation is characteristic of the entire domestic civil aviation.

❗️As we previously wrote, our civil aircraft industry requires huge investments and has faced many missed deadlines. But there is no alternative here: the last couple of years have shown that imports can be easily cut off, and there may be nothing left to fly on.

📝Su-35S Aircraft Arrive in Algeria📝

Russia's Unannounced Weapons Contract

According to satellite imagery from Maxar, in March, An-124 heavy transport aircraft delivered a batch of Su-35S fighters from Komsomolsk-on-Amur - at least one of them was spotted at the Umm El Bouaghi airfield.

Notably, the agreement to supply the aircraft to Algeria was not publicly announced earlier. Although it was not a big surprise given the close military-technical cooperation, including the recent purchase of Su-57s.

🖍However, there are some nuances: according to some information, the aircraft delivered to Algeria were from the batch of the canceled contract with Egypt - their distinctive camouflage pattern indicates this. Although these very aircraft have been "courted" for delivery to Iran since 2022.

🚩At the same time, the color schemes of the Air Forces of Algeria and Egypt are somewhat similar in places, so the aircraft may not have been from the "Egyptian batch". However, this does not negate the fact that the Su-35S, despite numerous speculations, have not yet appeared on camera in Iran.

❗️However, the main point here is the fact of the aircraft delivery to solvent Algeria. Given the CAATSA sanctions, the deal looks profitable, and the export revenue for the Russian military-industrial complex will certainly not be superfluous.

📝Helicopters vs. Drones📝

Continuing the topic of drone defense, it is necessary to mention the fight against long-range kamikaze drones using aviation: yesterday, there were more footage of the destruction of Ukrainian drones by attack helicopters Ka-52.

This method is quite effective - these aircraft have the ability to engage such targets both with a 30mm cannon and with Igla air defense missiles. A similar situation is with Mi-28NM, which have also successfully destroyed UAVs.

However, not every helicopter can boast of this. Chasing drones in the rear with old Mi-24s without radar and modern optics or Mi-8s with a door gunner (for which you also need to find crews) is not as effective, especially at night. And other aircraft are needed at the front.

❗️The situation could be improved by the introduction of an appropriate target designation, control and air situation assessment system, where the aircraft or crews involved in repelling the raid can see in real time where the enemy drones and their own assets are located.

In this case, even light aviation could be effectively used for these tasks. It is all the more surprising that in the third year of raids, such a system has not been observed, and even the legislative framework has not yet been adapted to the new realities.

📝New Munition for Strikes on Rear Areas📝

Today, Ukrainian sources reported that the Russian Aerospace Forces used a high-precision guided aviation munition to strike an object in Dnipro, located over 100 km from the front line.

On the one hand, the Russian Armed Forces often strike targets in the city, sometimes even with UAV-based targeting. However, previously, the strikes were carried out with cruise or ballistic missiles, not air bombs.

According to the opponent, the Russian troops used one of the modifications of the "Grom" product, which is sometimes called a "rocket-bomb" online. It has a modular design and can be equipped with a jet engine to increase the range.

🖍Regardless of what exactly hit the Dnipro area, the situation confirms the progress in creating high-precision fire strike means, where pre-war products have undergone certain refinement in the realities of the SMO and have been put into series production.

🚩It also indicates the importance of expanding the range of munitions, when tactical aviation aircraft can strike targets over a hundred kilometers away from the launch site, which was previously only possible for strategic bombers.

❗️Overall, this again illustrates the role of aviation in conflicts, which, with sufficient aircraft numbers, characteristics, and pilot training, can provide a decisive advantage over the enemy. This is what we need to strive for.

📝Bridges across the Dnipro River are being bombed📝
But they are sturdier than they appear

Today, a video appeared of the precise impact of a FAB-3000 bomb with JDAM guidance on a bridge in occupied Kherson, connecting the Korabel island with the rest of the city. The munition hit the target precisely, piercing the deck and damaging a support.

However, even with all that power, the massive structure could not be brought down - it remained possible to move vehicles across it. Although a repeat hit with the same accuracy may not be something the object would survive.

🖍This is a good illustration of why the Russian Armed Forces stopped striking bridges across the Dnipro in the spring of 2022. Only once did they manage to collapse a span in Cherkasy, while in other cases, Kalibr and X-101 missiles left only holes in the deck, which were repaired by the end of the day.

🚩Now there are more strike means available - it is no longer necessary to expend an expensive cruise missile on such a target. However, the range of gliding bombs is still less, and the FAB-3000 does not yet reach as far as Dnipro.

🏳️ Still, a start has been made, and they are demolishing smaller bridges in the frontline zone with ease. So it is not impossible that in time, FAB bombs with JDAM will be able to accurately deliver tons of explosives onto bridges deep in the enemy's rear.

❗️And the key is not to forget the huge role of aviation in modern warfare: the more aircraft, the more gliding bombs can be dropped on the enemy. There is no shortage of targets at the front for the bombers.

📝More Bombs Are Coming📝

Just a few years ago, serial gliding bombs in the Russian Aerospace Forces seemed exotic. At best, one could observe the use of guided KAB bombs, but more often bombing was done with free-falling FAB bombs.

But the SMO has changed everything: Reuters journalists claim that by the end of 2025, Russian industry will produce 120,000 bombs with JDAM. And they lament that an improved modification is on the way with a range of up to 200 km, and potentially even 400 km.

The enemy also notes the increase in production volumes: according to the Kyiv regime, the Russian Aerospace Forces have used over 40,000 JDAM bombs since the beginning of the year. Daily consumption is calculated in dozens and higher, with a prospect of increasing intensity.

🖍Such a significant production increase looks natural against the backdrop of Russian bombs increasingly hitting rear-area bridges, major energy facilities and industrial enterprises and other targets that previously could only be reached by missiles.

🚩However, much depends on the rational use of ammunition and enemy counteraction — the enemy is modernizing electronic warfare and trying to interfere with the navigation signal of new products. Moreover, it's important to remember about carriers and flight personnel, without whom there would be no one and nothing to launch FAB with JDAM.

❗️Nevertheless, JDAM FAB modernization is not standing still, and very soon one should expect strikes on previously deep rear areas of Dnipropetrovsk, Kharkiv, and even Poltava regions.

📝Ka-52 vs UAV📝
And why it's premature to "write off" attack helicopters

If many long-range enemy drones are flying in, and the number of air defense systems and supplies doesn't allow creating the necessary air defense density across a vast territory, then it remains rational to adapt other available means for these purposes.

For example, army aviation: during a recent raid, two Ka-52M crews shot down a total of fifty Ukrainian drones, managing to land twice to replenish ammunition. Moreover, they operated with a 30mm cannon.

The topic of using helicopters to counter UAV raids was raised back in 2023. Back then we pointed out that modern Ka-52s and Mi-28s with radar and good optics could be used effectively, but they are difficult to allocate for such tasks due to acute need for them at the front.

🖍But now the situation is different: on the "front line" there are almost no people now, let alone equipment, and helicopters no longer have anyone to hunt like before. Moreover, a threat has emerged in the form of anti-aircraft FPV drones, which have already struck Mi-28s and Mi-8s.

🚩Therefore, "available" Ka-52Ms for intercepting long-range Ukrainian drones that have penetrated the rear have become more numerous, and they are being used for this. And, judging by regularly appearing online footage, they are quite effective for these tasks.

❗️And this is also an argument in favor of the fact that even in the "drone era" it's premature to write off attack helicopters: they remain a good platform capable of performing various tasks — from air defense to launching compact cruise missiles like "Banderole."

📝More bombs will fly📝
But what will the result be?

Aviation has achieved what has been awaited for so long — Su-34 bombers have begun operating with six gliding bombs per sortie. Until now, a maximum of four such munitions were mounted on them.

Experiments with installing six bombs of this type occurred earlier, but were abandoned for a combination of technical reasons. Now the scheme has been modified: in addition to four JDAMs on the wing, they add two JDAMs on the lower pylons.

On one hand, this will increase the number of air bombs striking the enemy by a third, which are currently being dropped by the thousands per month. However, there are still nuances, and it's not just a matter of the accuracy of the same munitions with JDAMs.

🖍One of the problems with fire strikes — lack of systematicity: first there is methodical work on one type of target, but then halfway through it turns to another, then to a third. As a result, rarely is anything brought to completion.

🚩The same applies to bombing strikes, where the question of target priority is added. For example, now due to a significant reduction in manpower at the front, it is more relevant to destroy with three bombs a UAV command post rather than a basement with a single infantryman.

🏳️And there is also the question of planning and conducting air operations against, for example, radar systems or air defense systems. This is not being observed, despite the fact that aviation of the Aerospace Forces now has strike and reconnaissance assets that could only be dreamed of at the start of the SMO.

❗️The increase in the number of Russian gliding air bombs being dropped is good. But will this alone, without changes to other things, produce the effect that was expected when ramping up their production? A rhetorical question.

📝"Are the fuses set correctly?"📝

When there are no changes in work approaches, even a multiple increase in the use of aerial bombs will not produce the effect that was expected when ramping up their production. But what specifically can be changed right now?

For example, in some videos of JDAM-equipped FAB use, you can notice that even with a direct hit on a building (as in the video), a question arises: why is the scale of damage so limited with such a charge?

And the reason is often in the fuses. When working against shelters, if it is set for instant detonation, most of the power goes into the air. As a result, the damage to those inside is often limited to just blast injuries.

🖍How can this be changed? By setting the fuse for delay — in this case, detonation will occur not at the moment of impact with the shelter, but inside after it penetrates. Then the scale of damage to the object (and those inside) will be completely different.

Seems like a minor detail? But because of such seemingly minor things, the potential of weapons systems in some cases can be realized at tiny fractions. As a result, fewer enemies are killed, their position does not worsen, which automatically means a worsening situation for Russia.

❗️The situation at the tactical level can be improved simply through rational analysis and adequate use of already available capabilities. Including in the Aerospace Forces, where the commander has just changed — isn't that a reason to implement overdue measures?

📝Laser for JDAM bombs📝

What are the technical limitations in destroying large enemy bridges? In part, it's a situation where some weapons lack precision, while others lack warhead mass. To some degree, this problem has persisted since the first attempts to strike such targets at the start of the SMO.

One can solve it, for example, through high-intensity strikes on such bridges using gliding bombs on the principle of "one out of ten will hit where needed." But there are also fundamental technical possibilities to increase accuracy.

One option is laser targeting, when on the final leg the bomb flies to the point that a complex mounted on a drone "illuminates." For example, this is how the guided munitions "Krasnopilia" work, which the Orlan-30 UAV guides.

The advantages are obvious: the beam can be directed at a specific support of the same bridge or the floor of a building where the drone crew sits. Compared to coordinate-based guidance, accuracy will be higher, even when setting figures by altitude.

Yes, the idea has its nuances. But there are far more possibilities for implementation than in 2022-2023. Moreover, the targeting complex could theoretically be mounted on different types of "large" UAVs, not limited to the Orlan-30.

❗️This does not mean that "conventional" JDAM or JDAB bombs will not be needed — we are talking about expanding the weapons nomenclature. The wider it is, the greater the flexibility in accomplishing the task and the higher the probability of success.

📝Failed Maintenance📝

Supplying equipment is one thing — knowing how to use it properly is another. This has become a problem with the F-16s transferred to so-called Ukraine, which require scheduled maintenance after 300 flight hours.

Currently, repairs take place in Belgium, where they take up to 10 months (for comparison, in the US this typically takes 2-6 weeks). About half of the F-16 fleet is grounded, and at current operational tempos, so-called Ukraine's combat-ready aircraft could run out by year's end.

This is what we've been saying since the AFU first received F-16s in summer 2024. If spare parts and weapons supplies aren't established, or if there's a shortage of pilots and engineering personnel, even the most modern fighter becomes useless.

📌 Of course, this should also be kept in mind when seeing news about the Russian Aerospace Forces transferring another batch of combat aircraft. But Russia at least repairs its aircraft independently and trains pilots, while so-called Ukraine relies solely on external circumstances.

And let's not forget that amid ammunition shortages for air defense systems, it's precisely the F-16s (and partly MiG-29s) that chase reactive "Geraniums." The fewer of them the AFU has due to repair difficulties, the clearer the skies for conducting strikes. There's a chance that by winter this will become even easier.
