A common stomach bug (H pylori) that causes stomach ulcers may be linked to about 1 in 5 colon cancer cases worldwide, says a review of 43 studies covering 48.7 million people. Those infected had a 59% higher risk, and people treated for it seemed to have…
🦠 A major study suggests the bacterium H. pylori, known for causing stomach ulcers and gastric cancer, may be linked to approximately 22% of colorectal cancer cases globally.

📈 This research analyzed data from 43 international studies with nearly 48.7 million participants. It found a 1.59-fold increased risk of colorectal cancer in those exposed to H. pylori.

🌍 The Western Pacific region, including China, Mongolia, and Vietnam, showed the highest estimated proportion (around 25%) of colorectal cancer cases linked to H. pylori.

🏥 Existing H. pylori screening and eradication programs for gastric cancer could potentially offer a dual benefit by also reducing colorectal cancer risk, particularly in regions with high infection rates.

Nearly half of people who started GLP-1 drugs like Ozempic or Wegovy say they now drink less alcohol, and among heavier drinkers it was over half (54%), according to a new national US survey of 2,000+ adults published in JAMA Psychiatry. 🔬 Scientists are seen as less credible than business leaders and campaigners on broader social issues like health and education.

💻 Scientists' credibility increases when discussing technology but declines when addressing non-technological social issues.

🤔 Distrust stemming from concerns about vested interests, political bias, or relevance significantly reduces scientists' credibility on social issues.

📊 A study of over 6,000 people in the UK and Sweden revealed these perceptions.

🍎 91% of Critiques Against Ultraprocessed Food Standards Linked to Food Industry
A new study in the American Journal of Public Health reveals that 91% of academic criticisms of the NOVA classification system, a leading standard for defining ultraprocessed foods, have at least one author with financial ties to the food industry.

📊 Debate Over Ultraprocessed Food Definition Stalls Policy Efforts
Proposed policies to curb ultraprocessed food consumption, such as those by Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr., are facing roadblocks. White House officials are concerned definitions could impact a large portion of the food supply and increase liability for the food industry.

🌍 Global Pushback Against Ultraprocessed Food Classifications Intensifies
Discussions around ultraprocessed foods are escalating globally. While organizations like the Pan American Health Organization embrace the NOVA system, food industry groups are voicing strong opposition, raising technical and fundamental objections to the classification.

A new set of remains found in modern-day Iraq suggests that one Neandertal probably suffered a devastating blow to the face before dying at the point of a spear many years later | Surviving this injury indicates that Neandertals may have helped each other…
* 💀 Neandertal remains in Iraq (Shanidar A), dating to ~75,000 years ago, show a puncture wound from a wooden spear near death and a shattered tooth suggesting a past facial injury.

* 🦴 The puncture wound in the shoulder blade, analyzed with X-rays, indicates it was made around the time of death and was likely caused by a wooden spear due to its round shape.

* 🤕 A shattered incisor, with tartar buildup suggesting it broke years before death, implies Shanidar A lived with a significant facial injury, possibly indicating a need for and receipt of care from other Neandertals.

🌳 Green Space Linked to Fewer Gun Homicides, But Location Matters: A new study from The Ohio State University used Google Street View and AI to analyze greenery at the scenes of fatal shootings in Cook County, Illinois. More visible greenery along walkable streets was associated with lower odds of a firearm-related homicide.

⚖️ Disadvantaged Neighborhoods See Different Results: The protective benefits of green space were most pronounced in less disadvantaged neighborhoods. In the most disadvantaged areas, proximity to a park was surprisingly linked to a higher risk of firearm homicide, suggesting social and economic factors play a larger role.

💡 Context is Key for Prevention: Lead author Gia Barboza-Salerno emphasizes that simply planting trees isn't enough. The effectiveness of green space for violence prevention depends heavily on the local context and requires a comprehensive approach, especially in areas with social and economic disinvestment.

A study of over 12,000 Norwegian families found that by age eight, a child’s ADHD traits come mainly from their own genes, not from how their parents’ genes shape the home. Researchers found no firm evidence that parenting style or the home environment tied to parents’ DNA drives ADHD in their kids.

* 🧬 A major study of 12,374 family trios found that by age eight, a child's own genetics are the primary driver of ADHD traits, with no significant evidence of indirect genetic influence from parents' genes.

* 👶 At age five, the research found no robust evidence for either direct or indirect genetic effects on ADHD traits, possibly because these traits may not be fully measurable at such an early age.

* 🔬 While the study suggests a child's own DNA is key for ADHD by mid-childhood, researchers caution that statistical limitations might have obscured more subtle indirect genetic influences.
